Packed With Knowledge!.......2004-05-08
Jack Valenti's updated edition of this classic instructional text on public speaking includes all the name dropping and funny anecdotes you would expect from a man who spent his career behind the scenes in Washington, D.C., and Hollywood. Insisting that anyone can be an effective public speaker - and he clearly has heard the best and the worst - Valenti's watch word is "preparation." Although his writing is a bit repetitious and florid, and the information is basic, the book does what it promises: coaches the reader through the difficulties and details of composing and delivering an effective public presentation. If you drone on at a lectern while staring down at reams of notes, speak longer than your allotted time, have nightmares about the speech you gave that went wrong, count on momentary inspiration to carry you through important moments in the spotlight or don't know the first thing about giving a speech, we prescribe this book for your condition.
Carol Kent brings public speaking to an accessible skill........1999-02-07
I read Carol's book before I met her at a retreat where she spoke. I can affirm that she is an exemplary speaker. She practices what she preaches. The book provided practical wisdom plus numorous asides on the art of communicating while still upholding the integrity of both the message and the message-giver. I've adapted many of her suggestions to my own speaking outreach.

Book Description
Public speaking is one of the most intimidating and important aspects of many jobs. As a one-time speechwriter for President Johnson, and in his current position as president of the Motion Picture Association of America, Jack Valenti has written and delivered speeches in all kinds of settings. Originally published in 1982, Speak Up with Confidence is an indispensable resource for anyone who wants to write and deliver a speech that people will listen to and remember.
Customer Reviews:
some good basic rules to learn.......2005-02-14
If you are doing well in one-to-one conversations but stumble whenever you have to talk to an audience, you will find some good advice in this book. For "two dollars a piece", you will learn five basic rules that will help you a long way. Nothing more, nothing less. Well worth the money and the time to read it.
Not much here.......2003-04-02
I found precious little here. You might think that with the glowing reviews from famous people that this would be a useful book, but in fact the reviews aren't wrong - if you're a senator or a TV personality you'll find this book useful.
The rest of us can give it a miss.
Valenti may be a great speaker, but in terms of a book for everyone he offers little. You should remember your speech pretty much word for word. You should think of the cadence of how you'll deliver it. There really isn't much more, apart from long reminiscences about famous speeches and speakers. The book has a strange almost Victorian tone.
To misquote one of the reviews - this is a dispensible resource. Spend your money on one of the books that teaches you a lot.
A rare gem that stands out...........2002-11-04
This outstanding book is a rare gem that stands out amongst so many books on public speaking. Jack Valenti knows his stuff and demonstrates with finesse the skills and techniques required for successful public speaking. Even the experts, like Barbara Walters, are taking tips from this prolific writer and respected public speaker. His stories and eloquent illustrations are vivid and memorable, drawing both from his personal experience and real life examples of top public figures.
Valenti was a speechwriter for US President Johnson and is currently president of the Motion Picture Association of America. What can you say for a book that former US President George H.W. Bush recommends as a must-read for those who take their case to the public. This book is a brilliant achievement indeed. Once you start reading, it is hard to put it down.
Valenti assures us with his words:
"Let us be clear: If you want to be able to rise before an audience, large or small, and speak to them so that they will listen to you, you can do it."
A valuable resource.......2002-07-19
As a former teacher, I think this book is an excellent resource for teaching a skill that is becoming a lost art. Whether your career routinely includes public speaking or not, people in every walk of life could benefit from the ability to organize thoughts and communicate better. And who better to teach confidence? To see him speak is to admire him.
Kind of disappointing.......2002-07-10
I ordered this book after listening to an interview of the author on cable. I guess I had excessive expectations. I've been in need of a pep talk, and have always wanted to improve my ability to persuade others. The idea that this author had coached many persuasive people was a selling point.
But I can't say I found anything for me in here. There's nothing wrong with the technical content - there just wasn't anything new. While helpful, it seems awfully basic - like stressing the importance of preparation, and practice. Whoopie.
And much of the unique content, IMO, is too heavy on the name-dropping. The excerpts from speeches of the-beautiful-people-I-have-helped felt much like padding. Uh-huh, I guess I should be impressed, but shouldn't these passages be more inspiring?
Certainly I'm picky in these days of economic duress - I spend my money much more carefully, since I have a lot less. But I really thought this might be a worthwhile investment, and I rather feel it came up short.

A copy should be on every speaker's reference shelf!.......2006-07-02
A professional speaker for 26 years, I now refer to Speak with Confidence before each presentation for a quick brush up--learn, don't read or memorize material; shorten material by cutting the skeleton, not the flesh; handling Q & A using the SEER format®, and more! A copy should be on every speaker's reference shelf!
A Powerful Communication How to Manual: A Recipe for Success.......2006-03-19
"Powerful Presentations that Inform, Inspire, and Persuade" is the subtitle of this book and when used will be a sure recipe for your success as a public speaker. Putting into practice the hundreds of tips presented in this book will insure that you receive accolades for all your future presentations.
Straightforward and easy to read Ms Booher has developed tips for improving your communication and speaking skills in a logical, topical approach that takes you from your research, and establishing a rapport with your audience, through the latest advances in technical communications.
I especially enjoyed the pithy quotes introducing the subject to be covered in each new chapter.
The layout of the book, with the numbered tips and white space on each page, encourages the reader to reflect briefly on the thought just expressed before moving on to the next important tip.
Throughout the text you are asked detailed questions to consider in your research and preparation.
Whether a novice just beginning the adventure or a well traveled veteran in the field of public speaking, this is a book you will want to add to your library. This is valuable resource full of stimulating new ideas.
A Complete Guide to Public Speaking.......2006-02-28
Dianna Booher's Speak with Confidence is a complete guide to the basics of public speaking. She offers 497 practical tips that public speaking beginners use to overcoming their biggest fear. The author begins by addressing the most critical factor in a speaker's success-establishing likeability and credibility. The book also includes discussions related to organizing a presentation, practicing the presentation, using visual aids, and handling questions with authority.
Tip 400 is a very complete checklist for facilities and audio visual equipment. This tool is an example of the practical nature of this book. I was amused by the responses Booher provides to challenging situations. For example, she suggests that when a cell phone rings during the presentation, the presenter might want to respond humorously with a quip such as, "If that's the President (or CEO), tell him I don't have time to answer his questions or right now." Or when the microphone makes noise, come back with, "That was exactly what I said to my ex last week." Cute, but they'd have to be used at the right time with the right audience.
Overall, this is a good basic tool to help guide the skill development of someone who is new to public speaking.
Great Support for Speakers.......2006-02-24
Dianna Booher has made her book "Speak with Confidence" a very valuable resource for speakers. She offers a wealth of information and answered my questions before I even knew which ones to ask. This will be a book I refer to often as I prepare my speeches. It's very practical and full of details. I highly recommend it for everyone.

Customer Reviews:
not for the "painfully shy".......2007-09-03
I think this book is mis-named. It should be called, "Talking with Confidence for those who are just a little bit shy." The author doesn't seem to have any idea what it is like to be "painfully shy". This book is NOT going to help someone who is truly "painfully shy". Maybe it would help someone who just has a tiny bit of social awkwardness but certainly not the "painfully shy", as it claims in the title. I was extremely dissapointed
Seems out of touch with the painfully shy.......2003-12-06
The book has a few tips for what to say in various situations. Maybe they would be useful (or at least good for a laugh) for a person who doesn't have shyness problems. But the book doesn't address anything at all about overcoming the problem of shyness. Shy people experience pain and sometimes even panic in social situations. Simply telling them to "have a positive attitude" doesn't solve the problem - we need to know how!
So I'm still looking for a good book on the subject.
Very bad.......2002-06-06
This audiobook was definitely a waste of time to listen to. Everything is commonsense, and not inspiring at all. Personally, I like books and tapes that pump you up, but in an intelligent way. This has none of that, and the ideas contained in this tape aren't worth spending your time on (ie. everybody already knows them, and it doesn't take a person with a university degree or PHD to explain them to you).
disappointing.......2001-08-23
I was eagerly looking forward to this book, but am very disappointed by it. I just received it today, and though admittedly I haven't had time to read it fully, I have skimmed the topics and several dozen pages, and I'm not even going to bother reading it. This book would seem to be useless to anyone but a yuppie business executive holding million-dollar meetings and having power lunches. And obtaining such a position would seem to me to require a reasonably outgoing, aggressive personality, not the painfully shy person to which this book is allegedly directed. Oh, there's also sections on how to meet with difficult clients, and how to become a master salesman. All topics of great interest to a painfully shy person (I'm being sarcastic, of course). If you want a book by this author, buy his other book, How to Start a Conversation and Make Friends. It's much better, and has lots of halfway amusing cartoons. Gabor has completely missed the mark with Talking With Confidence For the Painfully Shy. Avoid it.
Unrealistic and too brief.......2000-04-25
I agree that the situations and phrases described and prescribed in this book are tacky and unrealistic. Some of the advice would push someone further into their shyness shell because of the reactions they would get. Not recommended. So many of these self-help books are so unrealistic as applied to real life situations. Why is that?
Book Description
No other book of its kind captures the extraordinary connection between the visual you, the vocal you and the verbal you. This book shows professionals how to break the "sound barrier" so they can develop the voice that means business, gets business and keeps business.

Well organized, concise, easy to understand and apply.......1996-12-31
Originally published in hardcover, the paperback will be worth the wait. Kent has clearly defined methods and pertinent applications for "wanna-be" public speakers, MC's, after-dinner speakers, and those of us who wondered if we really could speak in public.
Chapters are well organized, concise and very readable for anyone from university level to people who want to improve their skills. Kent has a Master's degree in speech/communication and certainly applies her knowledge with humour, insight and skill

Customer Reviews:
"A wonderful little book of time proven principles".......2001-12-07
This book begins as a tale of a young mid-eastern shepherd happens to find some ancient artifacts, which he carries for some time, believing they are of value. He comes in contact with a young American man searching the deserts for an answer to the question; how can he become wealthy? The American (Andrew) does a favor for the mid-eastern man, so the man gives Andrew the artifacts (7 scrolls bound in leather). After running out of money, Andrew sails back to America. He takes the scrolls to a rabbi to be translated. The scrolls are stolen, yet the writings are saved, and he is given copies. The book then lists all of the transcription (supposedly written by Solomon). The advise is sound, the same information written in The Richest Man in Babylon. Andrew follows this advise and becomes extremely wealthy as well as charitable. The author describes the character, Andrew as Andrew Carnegie. This was an easy book to read, and left a wonderful impression on me. I'd already read another book by the author; Success, the Glenn Bland Method. That book was even better. This is an excellent book for readers of all ages.
The Message.......2001-01-02
I have learned a lot from the book. Eventhough, I have been praticing the same principles before, I progressively began to understand the real reason why. There is so much strength in charity. A legend or not, the message is evident to all who believes in the powerful law of giving!
Tale Learn How to Think About Money.......2000-07-31
This is really a handbook for how to be a good Christian and get rich. If that's what you're looking for, here's your book.
I don't recommend.
