Product Description
The purpose of this book is to bridge the gap between the theory and practice of project management by presenting proven and practical guidelines that can be immediately applied for successful management. This book is organized as a series of essays on the what and how of successful Project Management, each one dealing with a specific and practical aspect of Project Management. The essays serve as windows into the world of Project Management and present an integrated panoramic view of challenges and best practices. It is my sincere hope that professionals at all levels and in various functions of management including executives, engineers, project managers, systems analysts, client representatives, team members and students of Project Management will find this book useful. Avoid the rat holes and catch the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow with the ideas described in this book.
Customer Reviews:
Finally---a book that explains what Project Managers do!.......2006-09-24
This book is absolutely a must-read for any Project Manager! More importantly, this book can easily apply to so many other fields. It is simply written, easy to follow, and the analogies are great! The whole concept of Project Management can be projected onto any other sector for people other than IT engineers (Like Me!!!). I love that anyone (ex orchestra conductor/physician/attorney/chef/pilot etc) can pick up this book and apply it to their profession. I think this novella is a great read for the small business owner for ideas and inspiration! I finally understand what Project Management entails!
As an aside, I also like the catchy front cover...
Book Description
Virtual and Collaborative Teams is of importance to practitioners and researchers because it brings together in a single accessible source, a variety of current research and practice on the subject of virtual and collaborative teams. Geographic distance, technology, lack of social presence, lack of adequate training and lack of instructional resources are just some of the unique challenges faced by virtual teams. This book is a unique resource in that it provides a variety of research and practice from a wide range of disciplines, nationally and internationally. The essays blend theory and practice, encompassing quantitative and qualitative research, case studies, interview research and theoretical models.
Customer Reviews:
Virtually everything about virtual teams.......2004-03-27
Godar and Ferris have assembled an impressive list of contributors, spanning both the academic and corporate worlds. Their book is very readable and contributes much to this emerging topic of virtual teams.
Virtual Team Guide.......2004-03-27
This book was a great combination of research, theory, and appliction that would be suitable classroom text, guidebook for managers of virtual teams, or resource for research. The mix of writing styles and sections devoted to specific issues is helpful and gives the book an expanded audience. Some previous knowledge of team management and of issues connected with virtual meeting practices would make this book the most useful.
Book Description
"Kathleen Reardon is one of a dozen or so contemporary scholars at the forefront of persuasion theory. . . .In addition to her original work, Reardon has a knack for translating widely diverse theories and research findings into terms understandable to those less knowledgeable about the field. In Persuasion in Practice, Reardon does two things: she presents a comprehensive summary and assessment of contemporary persuasion and research; and, she demonstrates applications of persuasion theory and research in four situations or communication 'contexts'--interpersonal, organizational, mass media, and political. Her discussion is largely descriptive and analytical, only rarely including prescriptive advice about influence. . . .The work is an invaluable resource for researchers investigating persuasion theory and practice. Moreover, because Reardon writes from a business orientation, her book will be useful for management communication and organizational behavior teachers, as well. Her excellent, business-related examples are particularly informative, suggesting, for example, an intersection of management and organizational communication." --Management Communication Quarterly What is persuasion? How is it maintained? How is it practiced and applied? Offering a unique blend of theory, research, and application, Persuasion in Practice deftly answers these questions and helps debunk many of the myths surrounding this topic. The constructs, schemata, rules, illusions, attitudes, and values of persuasion are explored and various contemporary theories are presented. In addition, the author examines persuasion as it is practiced in a number of different settings, including politics, organizations, and the mass media. For the scholar or student wishing to better understand the theoretical and research origins of current thinking on persuasion --or for the practitioner in all of us wanting to know how this current thinking translates into practice--you can't find a better resource than Persuasion in Practice.
Customer Reviews:
Hiiden Gem.......2004-08-26
This book is a hidden gem. If you are a leader, or want to be a leader in business, government, law, UN, or the armed services, this book is required reading. In this one book, the author summarizes every persuasion theory. She acknowledges the successes of each theory, and then just as easily challenges their flaws. Her clear definition of persuasion and what it is not, for the first time gives a leader the ability to access each communication relationship he or she may be in. The book also for the first time gives sophisticated programmers the ability to create models for practice avatar models or create models for cultural change efforts- from persuasion with one person to persuasion with a population. Often marketing people forget humans are capable for thinking for themselves, and she underscores this point by pointing out persuasion is something you "do with people", not "do to people".

Customer Reviews:
Practical; but, caution.......2002-06-06
In April 2002, I purchased Executive Temping by Saralee Woods and Kennedy Information's The Directory of Temporary Placement for Executives, Managers and Professionals (ninth edition). I found the summary questions to differentiate between an employee and consultant found in The Directory of Temporary Placement for Executives, Managers and Professionals to be a good review of this important subject. Many of the suggestions found in Executive Temping are practical, geared toward helping an executive-level professional refine their presentation to both staffing service and prospective employers. My intention was to use the books for a letter marketing campaign. I selected 52 name and addresses from the two books for mailout on May 2002. My returned mail rate is not favorable showing bad addresses of 24-30%. If you want to use these books as an overview of executive-level temping, Executive Temping by Saralee Woods may more closely fit your requirements. If you wish to use the books as a source for temporary staffing services name and address information, proceed with caution - both books have outdated address information.
Excellent career guidance for professional temporary workers.......1998-07-27
"Executive Temping" is a gem for any professional who wants or needs an alternative to self-employment or a traditional job. Five of the chapters cover opportunities and work contexts for temping in information technology, accounting and finance, healthcare and science, engineering, and law. Other chapters cover critical aspects of temporary employment, such as pay, how to choose the right service, how to connect with the service, and how to interview. The four chapters that cover survival on the job impressed me particularly. Although couched in terms of "your first temp job," Ms. Woods has actually included an employability skills course for adults. Every lesson I learned in my working life, and some I wish I had learned are contained in those chapters.
The organization and style of "Executive Temping" make it an easy read for anyone. Chapters are nicely broken into shorter topics, and filled with "real people" stories th! at illustrate the points. This book is a valuable addition to career guidance literature.
Everything you need to get the right job........1998-07-15
Executive Temping is a tremendous resource for anyone entering the job market or considering a career change. Ms. Woods experience and expertise as an staffing executive produces a valuable tool to maximize your earning potential as a profesional temp.
EXECUTIVE TEMPING would be great for any company seeking professional development opportunities.
Excellent resource!.......1998-06-27
In these days of corporate takeovers, downsizing, and early retirement, a must-read for anyone who wants to take charge of their career by working as a professional/technical temp. Full of practical tips and real world examples as well as inside information on how a staffing service works. Those in the staffing industry should also take notice--they could learn a great deal about how to improve their quality of service by paying attention to Woods' insights!
Invaluable tool for those who want or need to temp........1998-06-25
Executive Temping is for all those who must work and deal with the idiosyncracies of the late 20th Century workplace. In today's marketplace no job is secure, no worker exempt from downsizing. The average person will change careers five times in his or her lifetime. For those transitional times, Executive Temping is the perfect "How-To" book. The first half of the book deals with high level executives who have been laid off or who wish to change career fields. Executive Temping tells the reader how to use the temping business to bring in money, learn new skills, and try out different professions while considering future career options. The second half tells first time temps how to make the best impression, how to develop a top-notch relationship with the staffing company and how to transform a temporary position into a permanent one if they desire. Ms. Woods does a great job of making a potentially dry subject vibrant. Her use of anecdotes as examples makes her book an easy read. Executive Temping is a must for high school graduates, students temping their way through college, person's re-entering the work force after a sabbatical and those executives in the midst of changing careers.

As creator of the hugely successful Money Talks television news series, Johnson has helped millions of people get out of debt, achieve enduring financial freedom, and earn big from wise investments. Life or Debt, Johnson spells out exactly how to accomplish these goals in a step-by-step plan that covers
* How to calculate what you really earn, where your money goes, and how you can quickly convert debts to investments
* How to quit "working" for credit card companies and mortgage holders by reducing (or eliminating) your debt now
* Why you're actually paying three times the sale price of the items you buy --and how to stop
* How to work out a simple budget that provides ample money for what you need and cuts out unnecessary expenses
* How to melt away that mountain of debt by prioritizing which debts should be paid off first and at what rate
* The secrets of investing wisely and with minimum risk
* 205 ways to save money--it really does add up!

From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Average Read Among Many..........2004-10-31
Stacy Johnson gives us a decent first work in "Life or Debt". I have come across many personal finance books - some bad, some good. This one ranks somewhere squarely in the middle.
To be frank, I was able to conclude within a chapter or so, that the book was written by the proposed author as opposed to a professional writer. The language used throughout the book seemed to be "dumbed down", either intentionally or not (not necessarily a bad thing).
If you've read quite a few books related to personal finance, then you are by now familiar with the basic concepts used to accumulate wealth and beat down debt, ie., save a tenth of every paycheck to invest, pay off the highest interest debt first, consult with professional third parties if needed, etc. A lot of this information by now is getting totally redundant. Only a complete novice will receive insight from these age-old tips.
Now that the critical stuff is out of the way, I will praise this book for the things it does right. The chapter devoted to saving money entitled, "205 Ways to Save" is excellent. The majority of the tips are first rate money savers. Some of the tips may be familiar to seasoned readers and others will seem like common sense, but there are also some genuine money-saving winners among the selections. I feel that if the reader used even a small portion of the tips a substantial savings will be realized, especially if used on a regular basis. The author even offers up an informative chapter on how to deal with the big, bad credit bureaus.
Stacy Johnson gives us a solid, but far from perfect, first effort involving the world of personal finance and all the follies that can go with it. He offers insightful tips and hope to many people who are fighting to better their financial situation. It can only get better from here.
Excellent resource.......2004-04-13
This book is an excellent resource for anyone working on getting their financial life in order. Not only is it informative, but it is entertaining as well. Stacy has a way with his writing that allows you to enjoy while you are learning about finances. Even if you are financially savvy, this book is a great one to have on hand and share with family & friends.
Great book!.......2003-08-13
I'm so glad I ran across this book in an airport! By reading this, I realized by trying to keep up with the Joneses, I was placing myself in a serious financial crisis. By using the techniques in the book, I hope to have all my debts paid off in a couple of years.
Buy this Wonderful Book Today!!!.......2002-02-18
I recieved an advance copy of this wonderful book from the author. I have to say that reading this book is like having a close friend come over to your house and share the financial facts of your life. Stacy Johnson really knows his stuff. His experience on finances is second to none. This book provides an amazing "Blue Print" on getting your financial house in order.
Freeing yourself from debt is easier than you think after you read this book. As you probably know Stacy is the creator of very successful Money Talks television news series. He has been a Godsend to millions of people who need advice on getting out of debt, achieving financial freedom, and earning handsome profits from smart investment decisions. This book will inspire you take take charge of your Financial life!!!
You must give this book a try. It will be one of the smartest investment decisions you'll ever make.
An exciting approach to the same dull topic.......2002-02-12
This is my first book review, but I have to take the time to highly recommend this book. I saw Mr. Johnson on a local talk show (Northwest Afternoon here in Seattle) and I was inspired to buy his book. What this book essentially is adovcating is hapiness through financial freedom, which is accomplished by paying off all debts and then turning these debt payments into wealth. The way that Mr. Johnson sets this up is simple and self-supporting, and I personally am setting out on his recommended path. I especially love the section on how to make money off of telemarketers through the use of "do not call" policies. I have already used it on American Express, who kept calling me about credit insurance, and it promptly shut them up (apparently "I'm not interested" doesn't work, but "I will sue you" does). This book will pay for itself and is worth the time for anyone who is tired of working for everyone else.
