4 out of 5 stars Pocket guide indeed.......2002-01-02

This book is small and great. I learned a great deal from this book, about grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization, among other things. This book, if studied and mastered, greatly improves one's techical writing technique.
The section on English as a second language leaves a bit to be desired, but I suppose it is understandable, since this book was written for native English speakers. Good book.

4 out of 5 stars A handy little book.......2001-11-28

William Pfeiffer's book serves as a solid introduction to the technical writing process, and then retains value as a practical reference tool. The book showcases plenty of writing samples, and touches on some of the more common grammar problems encountered in the writing process. While not the definitive guide on writing (is there such a thing?), the "Pocket Guide to Technical Writing" is a worthy addition to the technical writer's library.

3 out of 5 stars An adequate intro for beginners .......2007-04-09

A college-level textbook, this is an adequate but brief introduction to the types of writing most technology workers will be expected to produce on the job. Although the book includes a unique chapter on writing as part of a team, it does not cover two topics that many engineers and scientists will face at work: 1) writing product descriptions, white papers, and other input for marketing and sales materials; 2) how to be an effective subject expert when working with a professional technical writer or copywriter.

              Book Description

Nearly 70% of employers now use the Web for job postings or recruiting, and even if a company advertises in a newspaper, it’s likely they require applicants to e-mail resumes. As Susan Britton Whitcomb and Pat Kendall say in this A-to-Z guide for job seeking in the 21st century: in today’s market, the only people who won’t need a Web resume are those who want to work for an employer without a computer.

In e-Resumes Whitcomb and Kendall cover all forms of electronic resumes and explain their uses, strengths, and weaknesses. They also show how to:

              * Construct, post, attach, and send the perfect e-resume for the job
              * Create an impressive 3D e-resume with hyperlinks, images, and audio or video clips
              * Find out about privacy issues, and search for jobs discreetly

Whether conducting an active online job search or maintaining a Web page of accomplishments, savvy job-seekers should turn to e-Resumes for all the help they need.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Resource for Job Seekers.......2004-08-01

For anyone who has to quickly learn how to correctly format and send an electronic resume, this book has the instructions in a clear, concise and step-by-step style. The narrative and concept presentation make a technical aspect of resume preparation easy to read and simple to learn. In my work as a career counsellor, I find that many job seekers, including the "computer literate" individuals, often ask themselves why they hadn't received any responses to their emailed resumes. This book explains and demonstrates how to strategically ensure that targetted employers receive and consider your eresume.

2 out of 5 stars ridiculously simple, plenty of page "filler".......2002-09-13

This book has some good information, but most of it is so ridiculously simple, that it can easily be ignored. Only buy this book if you know nothing about computers. The book spends about 10 pages discussing how to save a Word Document as a text file. This includes pictures of the "File Menu" and pictures of clicking on "Save As". Another "on-point" section discusses how to use the "Copy" and "Paste" commands.

As I stated, only buy this book if you are computer illiterate.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for lawyers and lawyer wannabes.......2004-01-06

This book may have changed my life. I was scheduled for a performance review when a friend lent me her copy. Reading it was like a mental software upgrade: for example, I used to have lots of negative thoughts about being a lawyer, and Shears pointed out how that was affecting my work performance. I was bumming because I wanted to both succeed as a lawyer and have lots of free time, but this book wisely points out that YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE! You can't do everything, and sacrifice is required to get ahead. By chapter three I had changed my wardrobe (some of it, anyway), and made some other important attitude adjustments as well.

These things may sound obvious, but sometimes we know things are true, yet fail to put them into practice. William Shears writes in a style that makes you feel like you're actually worth something: a feeling you don't often get from partners. He cheers you up, reveals the inside scoop on why people act the way they do, and most important, makes you feel as though you can get ahead regardless of whether or not you're working with one or more jerks. YOU have the power, and no one else can stop you. That's all too easy to forget in a law firm context. And feeling empowered made me want to change for the better.

The second half of the book is about learning the technical skills you'll need to move up the ladder of success. Things like negotiation, writing clearly, learning political skills and building a client base. He also has some good ideas on running your own business. Reading the chapter on transactional and litigation skills made me realize that there are several things I need to learn fairly quickly, and the book's reading suggestions are helping me get there.

In short, I changed my attitude and my appearance, came up with a good plan for learning some much-needed skills, and was able to make a much better impression on the partners at my performance review than I would have without this book. My New Year's resolution is to follow the book's suggestions for pumping up my Rolodex and starting to build a client base.

There are other good career counseling books for lawyers, but (as Shears points out in the intro) they tend to view partners as the "gods on Mount Olympus" who decide whether you'll succeed or fail. But they don't. As Shears points out, YOU are the only one who determines how far you'll get. You do have to please the partners if you want to become their partner yourself someday, but you matter just as much as they do. You may encounter setbacks, but if you have the motivation and put in the hours, no one can stop you from succeeding. If you don't get there at your current firm, there are lots of other options.

There's a lot of cynicism in the law, and this book cuts through it like a chainsaw. Thank you, Mr. Shears!

                Book Description

The widespread migration of civil servants to high-profile positions in the private and public sectors is known in Japan as amakudari, or "descent from heaven." Recent media stories associate the practice with corruption as the former officials seek government favors for their new employers. In their timely book, Richard A. Colignon and Chikako Usui offer the first systematic exploration of this influential yet poorly understood Japanese institution.

Colignon and Usui analyze amakudari as a ministry-level phenomenon that is consciously constructed and reproduced with intricate networks in many political and corporate spheres. Drawing on five decades of qualitative and quantitative data delineating the post-retirement careers of leading bureaucrats, they examine changes in traditional job patterns. Although not as strong a force as in the 1960s and 1970s, amakudari, in their view, remains a critical feature of Japanese society and heavily shapes the relationship between government and business.

The authors warn that despite the Japanese media criticism of amakudari, it comprises a power structure resistant to radical change. Most important, their book demonstrates that a gradual weakening of this practice may not lead to a more democratic, meritocratic society.
