This impassioned critique of contemporary mass culture argues that the media, particularly television as the spearhead of electronic communications technology, contributes to the pervasive demoralization of the American public. By stimulating the public with an endless stream of enticing, essentially unattainable illusions, the media produce what William K. Shrader calls the "experiential bind," a phenomenon rooted in the incongruity between the two juxtaposed realms of vicarious and firsthand experience. The internalized bind causes a chronically irritated self-ideal discrepancy, producing morbid guilt. This condition is familiar to mental health specialists, and is frequently invoked to explain the erratic and socially destructive behavior patterns of the mentally ill. Following a brief introduction, Chapter 1 describes the experiential bind and the media's "imagery of unreality." This imagery is analyzed from two essential aspects: (1) the "imagery of fantasy," which predominates in prime time network entertainment programming on television and in the majority of Hollywood movies; and (2) the "imagery of doom," which predominates on television news programs shown in large cities across America every evening of the week. Chapter 2 is an elaboration of psychodynamic considerations, specifically, how both aspects of unreality affect such human characteristics as self-esteem, feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and narcissism. Chapter 3 continues with societal reverberations, including loss of community involvement and rampant consumerism. Chapter 4 turns to rehabilitation and prevention, drawing on Shrader's experience as a clinical psychologist and therapist-counselor. Chapter 5 is concerned with the emergence of a technological society and its contribution to materialism in America. The final chapter presents concluding thoughts, involving especially the author's theme that "hedonistic materialism is America's Achilles Heel." Media Blight and the Dehumanizing of America is suitable for the general reader, and will be particularly useful to scholars of social/behavioral and clinical psychology, and mass communications.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Amazing Sex succeeds in not only teaching technique (as well as a book can), but also offers serious advice for boosting your self-esteem. As with other Complete Idiot guides, you'll probably want to turn this one backwards in your bookcase, or at least get a book cover for it. But get past the silly title and you'll find a plethora of facts, tips, and tricks on topics including sexual response, masturbation, foreplay, afterplay, oral sex, fantasy, sex toys, sexual preference, cross-dressing, and "The Big Om": tantric sex.

The margin notes liberally decorating the book are worth a hearty chuckle. The "Sextistics" are particularly fun and eye-opening. Some examples: only 9 percent of people surveyed believe sex appeal is innate; the rest feel it can be acquired!; about 7 percent of women have never climaxed; the majority of male crossdressers are married with children; and, according to the Hite Report, nearly 60 percent of men ages 61 to 75 said their desire for sex remained steady or increased with age, Viagra or no.

Locker, a sex educator and WCBS-TV relationship correspondent, has been a sex educator for more than a decade. That said, she should have placed the facts on contraceptives and sexually transmitted diseases earlier in the book, before the hot and heavy photographs of sexual positions. That gripe aside, Amazing Sex is worth investigating by both sexual neophytes and experienced couples looking to maintain a state of hot monogamy.

This is truly a good read about all things sex and I've many on this site, including this one and Sex Machine: A Man's Guide to What Really Pleases a Woman in Bed as well as other. I was amazed at the amount of know-how the author(s) put into this book. It's almost an A-Z kind of book with most subjects talked about throughout. It was really, really helpful. Don't pass this one up!

Loved this book. It just happened that at the same time I was reading this book I also saw a show in NYC called My First Time. It was a great combination. Added to the attitude of the book. Great read...and show...lol enjoy!

It's ok........2007-08-03

I guess I was looking for something else but the book is good for general audience, who already know about sex and everything that comes with it. It describes woman's and man's sexuality, sexual relationships, self-pleasure, sexual positions, aging in sex, etc. Personally for me it was surprising to read that having sex in public is ok (as long as no one sees), like in the taxi, park or even kid's playground. Excuse me? I would much rather prefer this book to recommend against this. Another thing I disagreed with is that Sadomasochism is "healthy". No it is not, receiving and giving pleasure through pain is a psychological abnormality. Or role playing of pretending "mother and child", I am surprised such a suggestion was given. Except for these and few other points, the book is okay for general public. I personally sought something more on a psychological basis.

I bought this book hoping it would be a guide to amazing sex, as in it's title. However there is a good portion of the book devoted to "high school" like sex-education: diagrams of sexual parts, discussions on contraception, etc. There is very little about the act of sex in here, and what is here, is nothing new or interesting. This book would be very helpful for high school students and virgins, but not for an adult. I was very disappointed.

CHRISTIAN FINANCIAL ADVICE.......2004-12-03

I see that the other reviews of this book don't like the fact that it is Bible based. Then they shouldn't be reading a Bible based book! Larry Burkett was a very knowlegeable Christian that believes in the fact that Christians that live their lives following Biblical teachings are better off financially and emotionally. By todays non-christian standards, Larry's methods and standards may seem outdated and archaic however by Christian standards they are true and valueable in todays world.

I have not read this book but am very familiar with Larry Burkett's teaching and writings as well as his radio show. For this reason I gave this book a 3 but when I have actually read it I am sure it will be a 5 star book like his other writings.

Do you live in the Middle Ages?.......2004-04-22

This book is perfectly useless. And, besides being useless, it is totally centered around the Christian Bible. The author seems to be a regular old preacher who has very outdated views of the husband/wife relationship. I wonder if he knows that we let women vote now?
Here is a sample of question found in the book: "Even though I want to be a good wife, and I know that the Bible says that my husband is the authority in the home, shouldn't I have some input in this marriage as well?" Women: is this really a question that you are wondering about? Furthermore, are you happy with the idea that your husband is your authority? If so, this books will be perfect for you!

A word of warning, unless you are lost on the Christian right, this book will not appeal to you in the least. Money Matters manages to apply draconian financial rules written some 2000 years ago to a modern economy.

Another fine work by Mr. Butko.......2001-10-12

A must read for anyone who grew up in Western Pennsylvania or Eastern Ohio who remembers Isaly's Dairy Stores. While not from that region, I have eaten a few Klondike Bars in my time and enjoy Mr. Butko's work on the Lincoln Highway and Diners. This is well researched looking at company records and interviews with Isaly family and coworkers. The book is filled with excellent photographs from the start of Isaly Dairy's to today. Great gift idea for family or friends who enjoyed a Skyscraper Cone, Chipped Ham, or a Klondike.

A must read!.......2001-06-21

Brian Butko is a brilliant writer whose love of a subject comes alive in his books. I have never read a book that more comprehensively and eloquently relates the ethos of a region and its people. This book is a great read for anyone who is interested in the history and culture of these wonderful eateries. It also provides an incredibly insightful glimpse into the world of small business management. I grew up on Isaly's products, and this fascinating book takes me back to my youth.
