5 out of 5 stars Power in the right words. Life is what is perceived........2007-06-27

Lasting power is in relationship smarts. We can become more "powerful" when we put people up and make them feel good about their positive actions than if we react with a vengeance.

This book also teaches how to approach conflict. We could belittle the other person (or ourselves if we are criticizing ourselves) with poison words, or we could approach the problem with them knowing the problem, and having the drive to fix it.

The book also discusses how to ask for help in a way that makes people feel like a part of your team instead of being "dragged into doing another favor for you."

I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Meryl!!!.......2007-02-07

Your book has saved my professional and personal self-confidence with communicating. Usually my conversations and correspondence were long, drawn out, and the other person would get lost in "words." My tendencies were to get the "last word" in a conversation, sometimes with a little barb, thinking I was leaving a lasting impression. Wrong... Your book is a ready reference for phrases that are specific and short, but quick and to the point. Thank you for your saying: say what you mean, mean what you say, without being mean when you say it. That one phrase sums it up!

1 out of 5 stars Maybe too much publicity and a colorfull cover........2007-02-01

Well, if you are a Neanderthal guy with no experience at all on comunnication with people on your own species, buy this book RIGHT NOW. On other hand, if you are even a little polite and educated this book will not tell you anything new. Anyway, if you are looking to increase your comunicattion skills, you could use one or two pages of the whole book. I think that it is too litle for 200 more pages. It is up to you.

5 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed..........2004-06-20

This book is helping me tremendously at work and in my personal life. I had no idea how weak my language was. I was afraid to say what I thought and ask for what I want. I was always concerned that I would disapoint people out inconvenience them. This book helped me to learn how to communicate effectively while continuing to be a really nice person that gives and gets respect.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful!.......2004-01-18

I love it! It's immediately practical and useful. I learned how to respond to my critical boss, assertively address a backstabber, and most importantly, convey my anger and disappointment without blamin the other person. That lesson alone was worth way more than the price of the book. What a value! I'm using what I learned in this book every day.

5 out of 5 stars Great Interpersonal Development Practice.......2002-03-01

This is a great book that teaches you to be positive thinking. It is hard to stand firm and sensible when you meet an awful lot of people who are hostile, cold or sarcastic in everyday's life. As our society tends to become more electronic environment, we need some skills to prevent us from being cold and lost. This is the book which teaches you how to convert a hostile situation into a negotiable one; It tells you how to speak well politely and get what you want; If you meet an unreasonable customers, what to say in order to make him/her know that he/she is making an unreasonable request; It lead you to learn from using a single 'if' to a 'when' in order to initiate yourself to start a positive life; It shows you how to use an 'and' instead of 'but' to conduct a positive conversation. This is a great book everyone should learn since childhood!! As the author said: The best gift parents can give to the children is the ability to talk positively & act on it...(something like that).

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT AND CURRENT GUIDE TO DIRECT COMMUNICATION!.......1998-11-11

This book was the most useful recent guide to direct communication that Ihave read over the years. Going all the way back to Manuel J. Smith'sclassic "When I Say No, I Feel Guilty." With only a quick reading of the first two chapters - on a short plane trip heading into an important negotiation, - I was able to gain tremendous clarity on what I really wanted from would normally have been a very difficult communication situation. I was able to move from "problem-based" anxiety to "solution-based" purposefulness. While still in the air, I wrote out some clarifying sentences as described in Chapter 2. Upon landing and getting to my meeting, I was then able to operate within a framework of knowing exactly what outcome I wanted from the negotiation and how to say it effectively to the other side. The proof is in the results: I achieved an outcome that was far better than I even imagined!

Since that experience, I have read the rest of the book and found it to address most of the difficult problem areas that I have had in the past with direct communication. It is apparent that the author has a very good grasp of the various contexts where communication can become problematic for the average communicator, such as intercepting an indirect attack and surviving an aggressive attack. What was particularly useful was the emphasis on how to eliminate the most common barriers to directness. The authors work goes beyond simply presenting a collection of pointers on assertive communication. Instead, the work presents a system for effective communication that the author refers to as I Mean Business Modus Operandi (IMB MO). In my short experience of using this system, I have found that it applies not only to business relationships but also to personal relationships. I find myself referring back to the book whenever I need to know how to best handle a challenging personal or business communication matter.

My only suggestion for improvement is that a registration form for the author's Say What You Mean Get What You Want Workshop be included in the back of future editions of the book by the publisher. To become highly competent with the IMB MO system, like with any other approach, a reader will need to commit to practicing it over time. Unless you are extremely self-motivated, this task can be a challenge. Attending at a workshop would allow the concepts to sink in faster. Together, the book and some coaching could produce incredible results for those desiring improvements in their direct communication style. Nevertheless, using the book along with some self-motivation can still take you a very long way!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful...While Getting To The Point.......2002-05-06

Most Americans either fear public speaking or do not know how to properly give a presentation. Get To The Point gives many helpful insights to the many aspects of presenting your points in the best light.

Very often, the average audience member comes away with 10% of the content of a speech. Get To The Point helps the presentator maximize that 10% and maybe even icnrease it. Authors Berg and Gillman emphasize the importance of getting to know your aduience from many points of view. Know your relationship to the audience and the aduience within itself. From there, a good presentor will use clear concise jargon and possibly throw a few key buzzwords for effect. The importance of a conservative dress code as well as a confident animated matter are also emphasized.

Many other key details are explored such as the types of questioners at a presentation such as the fillibuster. Gillman and Berg detail well how to deal with this type of personality as well as how to handle yourself when interrupted. The conservative approach is very level headed.

Other topics such as meetings, job interviews, and introducing speakers are discussed in detail. Special effects in presentations are also discussed. Because this book was written before the invention of PowerPoint, many fo the visual aid examples are a bit out of date. However, the bottom line point illustrating that the speaker makes the presentation rather than the effects, still overrides any technology advances taht Get To The Point does not incorporate.

To summarize: Get To The Point meets its mark and will help out budding speakings greatly.

5 out of 5 stars First Determine: What IS the point?.......2002-01-02

Gilman and Berg achieve two primary objectives: They help their reader to determine, first, what the most important "point" is; then, they help the reader to "get" to it ASAP with clarity and precision. The same principles of the program are relevant to every situation in which there is a need to communicate but it is important to note that this is not a "how to" book for those who need help preparing and then presenting formal speeches. "Rather, we are referring to the relatively short and informal talks with clearly defined objectives that take place most often in a work-related context." The authors prefer the word "presentations" to "speeches" as in a one-on-one situation in which someone must persuade her or his supervisor to make a certain approval decision or take a specific action. I think this book is very well organized. The authors have dozens of key points which they get to in exemplary fashion. Their approach is practical rather than theoretical, based on many years of real-world experience with training all manner of persons who needed to understand how to say what they meant inorder to get what they wanted. Although most of the examples in the book are in a business context, the lessons to be learned are also relevant to presentations elsewhere, such as a committee report to members of a church, a briefing to members of a social organization, or participation in a "Career Day" program at a school. The authors also explain "How to Introduce a Speaker" (Chapter 24). In earlier chapters, they offer some excellent advice on other subjects such as "Clothing: What the Well-Dressed Presenter Wears", "Picture Perfect Videoconferencing", and "The Job Interview." For many people, this may well be the most valuable book they read during the next 12 months.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all executives.......2000-06-01

This book tells it like it is. How to get the point across to various audiences using a variety of media. This book must be in every executive's library.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent value in a pocket-size package........1999-03-17

A value-packed book with a strong emphasis on overcoming stage fright. Detailed description of how to write a quick speech, keep note cards, what to wear, how to use visuals, and how to deal with hostile audiences, among others. Provides most of the good solid speaking tips and presentation skills found in larger and much more expensive books. A good book to bend the pages and mark up useful passages with highlighter. Definitely worth the price in paperback.

5 out of 5 stars get your share: the everyday woman's guide to stocks.......2002-02-05

I too am a hispanic woman. I was quite intimidated by stocks and expecially that scary stock page in the newspaper. I could not believe it. I am a college graduate and a bank employee and here I am completely baffled by investments. I work in a bank. But I caught the last 15 minutes of her PBS special and was captivated as to how simply she explained it without being condisending. I needed someone to explain how to take control of my own finances and all of those dummy books were not as helpful as I had hoped. I truly felt like a dummy!! I especially liked the road lane analogy. Because now I know in what lane and what speed to go. Even though I am 27 and the recommended/investing age starts at 25. I am confident that my retirement will be smoother than most of today's retirees. I thank you very much Julie, you improved my life by allowing me to understand it more clearly. Thanks again. If you are ever in Chicago, look me up. I owe you a cup of Starbucks mochaccino or something!!

5 out of 5 stars BEST FINANCIAL PLANNING BOOK OUT THERE!.......2001-12-06

Wow! Julie Stav is really a financial writer for our times. She speaks in clear language and provides a special (and easy!) system for you to figure out how to plan for retirement, save for a college fund, or even just get the most out of your 401(k). My favorite part was the exercise she had us go through to find "hidden assets" that I didn't even know I had! I would recommend this to anyone who is numbers shy but who knows that it is time to take their financial future into their own hands!

              Book Description

The reissue of the classic history about the sawmill industry in the Pacific Northwest is rich in memories. Here is the vital and true story of the triumphant growth and its undying promise, shown with superb photography and told with exciting text. The utilitarian waterwheel, the great days of the steam sawmill, and the epic courage of the schooner masters are told in all their glory. Ralph Andrews augments his careful and thorough research with anecdotes of the men who transformed logs into the building materials of a nation. The reader takes a step back in time, as the history of the industry which has gone on continuously since 1825 is brought to life.

4 out of 5 stars One of Very Few Sources to Document When Sawmilling was King.......2001-12-10

Comprehensive books on early sawmilling in the Pacific Northwest are very rare. This book is as good as it gets. Andrew's companion book (both published by Superior Publishing in the 1950s) was called, "This Was Logging" and together they describe an industry mostly lost to history. There are hundreds of outstanding photos in "Sawmilling", on the other hand I found the book to be somewhat unorganized based upon the chapter headings and sub-headings. After studying the book for some time I was never able to discern where Andrews was going with the organization. Added to that is the lack of references or index, but it's worth the price of these distractions to have these photos and stories of yesteryear still available to enjoy. In some cases he captures pieces from trade journals or company magazines that would have been lost to history if not for his efforts. But that can be said about all three of Andrews works, the third being, "Redwood Classic". The book includes an explanation of the sawmill sign language between the sawyer and setter. Having been around sawmills as a youngster and having worked in a plywood plant for Robert Dollar Co. during breaks from college, I love to learn the job titles of the different folks in a mill. But even more interesting was the language in a shingle mill. Titles as the shingle weaver, upright sawyer, short staker, hand machine sawyer, packer, double-block sawyer and knot sawyer...all jobs where men labored long hours under very tough conditions and now lost to obscurity except for in books such as this one. While this book documents many of the big operations such as Pope and Talbot and many small ones, there were literally thousands of small mills throughout the Pacific Northwest and the photos in the book could have come from any of them. If you want to learn about a livelihood that is only a shadow of it's former self get a copy of Andrew's book and see an industry as it once was.
