Jack Griffin argues that it's vital to sell yourself--and your ideas--every day. In How to Say It at Work: Putting Yourself Across with Power Words, Phrases, Body Language and Communication Secrets, he offers practical advice for making your case whether your target is a supervisor, colleague, subordinate, client, vendor, or lender. Part 1 has a self-test for evaluating your current skills and also includes a toolkit for improving your overall communication at work. Part 2 lists specifics for dealing with key individuals and includes helpful (and harmful) words, phrases, body-language strategies and other techniques that can help you be a better communicator at work. --Howard Rothman

Excellent Book!.......2007-08-03
This book was very helpful for me to determine what to say and how to convey my message professionally. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the workplace.
Management Book.......2007-07-15
Another recommendation from my management class. Very useful examples for various situations. It will be very helpful and one of my reference books.
Must have.......2006-12-24
I bought this while interviewing and now I keep it at work. I got the job I wanted with my top salary request. Useful, easy to understand and put into practice. Things you didn't realize about posture, facial expressions, simple phrasing, voice tone, etc. Great investment.
Is this a vocabulary review?.......2005-09-10
I was more interested in reading about different perspectives in the business environment, and the most effective way to communicate between different roles. I did not buy the book to memorize long lists of words and phrases - the "good" ones and the "bad" ones.
The lists really put me off. They do get the right concepts across, in their own inept way, but they aren't all-inclusive, and it only stands to reason that sometimes they'll be wrong, depending upon the situation. Sure words are powerful, but delivery is everything. Body language, attitude, and neutral words used in the wrong way can have the same effect as words on the "bad" list, so the lists hardly make sense. I think the only time I will use these lists will be when I want to mock the late 90's and early 2000's with tired, overused phrases that I really can't stand to hear anymore. This book is at such a superficial level that it isn't even about communication.
Excellent and essential book for everyone.......2004-10-07
I started teaching people to make PowerPoint presentations around 1992. Around 1995, I realized that many people were talking about themselves, so I suggested that the most important word they could use was "You." In 2003, I realized that people who wanted to be accepted by their audience should use the word "We." And then I picked up this book and read that the the three most important words in a business person's vocabulary were "we," "us," and "our." And that was on page eleven. At that point I was sold.
It's very easy to open your mouth and say your message in a way that alienates people. Very few people can negotiate difficult communications, but this book will help them do this. The book shows you words, phrases and body language to use and to avoid. It has numerous samples of conversations you can have with your fellow workers to put yourself in the best position.
The book covers all kinds of spoken business communications - the four largest sections include Getting a Job, speaking with your Supervisors, your Colleagues, and your Subordinates. Other groups are Prospective Clients, Current Clients, Handling Credit, Collection, and Customer Complaints, Vendors and Suppliers, and Lenders and Investors. In many cases you'll see the traps you can fall into.
You need to use this book with a little thought, in that the circumstances are usually similar to what you have to deal with, but not identical. But a few minutes' reading will change you from being a tongue-tied person to someone who achieves what you want.
I feel sorry for people who dismiss this and other similar books as "just common sense." I've known few people who possessed even a fraction of the skills shown in this book, and my own experience shows that I spent over ten years learning the information that appears in the beginning of the book.
Definitely a must-have, and a good book to build your general communications skills. And you'll stop coming away from meetings thinking, "I wish I could have said that better."

A career builder for me!.......2001-04-06
Like most people, public speaking was not a skill I was very comfortable with. Micki Holliday's work has added a new dimension to my technical career. I find it easier and more enjoyable as a public speaker. I now travel world-wide and get paid for literally talking to thousands of people about what I love to do!
It's working.......2000-07-23
After suffering through several presentations and wishing I wouldn't have stop just to catch my breath from fear I decided to purchase this book and attempt to correct my problem. I found that the book helped me to be more familiar with my material and use my organization skills to help clam me down ..It totally worked.

Confidently Approach your next Negotiation!.......2007-10-23
Advance your as-yet undeveloped negotiating skills! Easy to read, incredibly well laid out and covers many real-life negotiating situations - you'll catch yourself smiling as you build your gambit toolbox which will allow you to deftly navigate your way through ANY situation requiring a negotiation. If its any testament, this book was critical in providing me the perspective and confidence required to become a commercial real estate broker.
Get it!.......2007-05-14
I've seen this course make a very positive impact on more than one person. One thing I really like about it is that it's not about steamrolling people. It's about finding common ground and making sure both sides come away from the negotiation with their dignity and feeling good about dealing with you. With that said, this course can help you prevent being manipulated and taken advantage of by those who make a habit of steamrolling others, and do it in a way that isn't overly confrontational.
greatest negotiation tactic CD.......2007-04-05
great cd, wonderfull speaker, very helpfull for any type of business person, should be taught in colleges
'Great Book".......2007-03-17
This book was very informative and made me see that for years I was not negotiating to my fullest potential especially with my son who was getting his way on almost everything. He is still spoiled but at least now I know how to curtail some of his always constant request for everything.
This book is also helpful for everyday negotiating with people that you could run into anywhere.
You must read this if you negotiate in the real world.......2007-01-29
Roger Dawson is my competitor! That's right, I have taught negotiation to Microsoft, Starbucks, Goldman Sachs, and the Pentagon, and I have written three books on the subject (Negotiation Boot Camp is the latest). But I am compelled to acknowledge Mr. Dawson as one of the giants in the field. Secrets is must-read for anyone who is serious about refining their negotiating abilities. Not only does he know his subject, Dawson is an eloquent communicator who can make it come alive for you. It has been my honor to share the speaking platform with Mr. Dawson -- the audiences love him, and so do his readers. Take my advice and become one of them!

I don't know if this book uncovered secrets. But it is easy to read and contains many, many, many usefull tips. It's worth to have.
Good presentation book to emphasize preparation .......2005-06-13
This is the second Peter Urs Bender book that I read. I highly recommend this book to those who are afraid of presenting in front of a large group of people, but would like to do it. I finished this book in a week, and would like to read it again.
After reading this book, not only do you find that all the presenters (not only you) are very nervous, but you also find that how to hide your nervousness. One tip I like best is, you may imagine all your listeners are naked!
Peter emphasizes so much on preparation, that's basically the book's whole point: If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.
An excellent book on public speaking and presentation.......2003-01-16
If you occasionally speak to groups but don't have formal training or you just want to improve how others perceive you, get this book! It's a great refresher for those who speak and present frequently.
The book covers what you need to know to make great presentations in a comprehensive, yet compact book. Peter Urs Bender presents his material in a light but extremely informative manner. The material he covers rivals the professional public speaking and presentation seminars I have attended.
100% Useful!.......2001-10-17
Peter Urs Bender has a great writing style. In all his books, he is right to the point, pragmatic, and every line is written with a purpose. One can hardly find any sentence that is out of place or useless. This book is no different.
This book discusses 5 topics: (1) Speech, (2) Body Language, (3) Equipment, (4) Environment, (5) Preparation. Its goal is to help you think clearly and have an effective, straightforward battleplan when you are making presentations. Armed with this book, your delivery should improve immediately. This book is for anyone (beginner or pro) who want to become a 'star' speaker. Thank you Mr. Bender.
A Very Helpful Book.......2000-05-24
"Secrets of Power Presentations" offers practical, down-to-earth advice to help readers enhance their presentations. Written in a friendly tone, it can build confidence and skills. I recommend it to anyone who wants to dramatically improve their public speaking abilities.
Book Description
In this age of sophisticated communications technology how can interpersonal communications be suffering? Simply, few people take the time (or even feel they have the need) to learn the skills of effective one-on-one communications. This book emphasizes a systematic approach to interpersonal contact because its authors know from their other work - presenting, leading, marketing - that systematizing the approach to any activity will help individuals excel at it. Secrets of Face-to-Face Communication will appeal to those who truly want to improve the skills that lead to better understanding.
Customer Reviews:
Worthwhile Read.......2005-01-02
When I first cracked open this book, I must say that I was quite skeptical. I was hoping for the best, but I wasn't sure that it was going to be very good. I sure hoped this book on communication would not be a waste of time.
As I proceeded, my fears eased. The book is well written and flows with a light and anecdotal style. It isn't heavy, but the advice it gives is weighty. It does have some what of a bias towards face to face communication in regard to business, but the authors have kept it general enough to appeal to someone who isn't primarily seeking out the business-oriented of better communication. By keeping each section short and snappy, the authors have enabled the reader to avoid becoming intellectually bored.
My only complaint is that some areas of the book, while remaining brief, the authors may have erred in giving a little too much information in the form of bulleted lists and what not, so as to make digestion and retention of some of the information unlikely.
With the one caveat in mind, I can highly recommend this book to anyone who interacts with people on a day-to-day basis and feels they could learn a thing or two about communicating more effectively. You will certainly learn more than a few things by reading this book.

Customer Reviews:
It's okay -- but I was hoping for more..........2005-11-17
This is a good beginning book for those who have never created flip charts. Unfortunately I was looking for a book with more drawings / pictures that can be used on flip chart. I highly recommend Robert Lucas' Big Book of Flip Charts. Other easy to draw illustrations that can be used for such charts can be found in any of the books by Ed Emberley. Preview the books at your local library -- you'll then want to purchase them for later use.
Very valuable but not the best.......2002-02-10
This book ia packed with helpful ideas, tips and suggestions for using, making and presenting flip-charts efficiently and creatively. It is a wonderful resource for anyone who wishes to learn new techniques and also as a reference for any presentation skills workshop.
However, despite the graphics and the 'white space' you find yourself somewhat bored by them after a while. All the pages look very similar and there is almost no variation in the layout.
Good book but a bit pricy.......1998-04-23
The content in this book is solid, however there are many cartoon-type graphics and much white space with the bulleted format. Maybe a bit expensive for the amount of information covered.

Before you buy or lease--read this book!.......1998-12-31
Wow--who knew that buying a car would be so complicated? After reading The Unofficial Guide to Buying or Leasing a Car, I felt that I was ready to negotiate with the dealers, get the best financing available, and drive away in the car I'd always wanted. As a woman not accustomed to dealing with slick salesmen, I wouldn't have felt confident and informed if I hadn't followed the advice in this value-packed book. Buying a car was a big deal for me, and I feel like I didn't get ripped off, thanks to Donna Howell!

Book Description
The story of the evolution of business in this country is in many ways the story of the evolution of the automotive industry. The shift from an agrarian to an industrial society, the growth of the middle class, and much of the world's cultural development in the past hundred years has been driven by the automobile. And all the challenges facing global industry todayre-engineering, achieving customer focus, cycle-time leadership, becoming market-driven, dealing with overcapacity, regulation, consumerism, and environmentalismare nowhere more vital than in the world's auto industry.
The story of the automobile industry is largely the story of economic, societal, business and marketing history in our times. The story of the American automaker, particularly the "Big Three" of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler between 1890 and the 1970s, is the ultimate case study of business development in a manufacturing-driven, growth environment. The last 20 years, however, have brought a very different scenario to world business. This period of intense global competition has seen a paradigm shift in priority to a market-driven customer focus.
Understanding this change and predicting its future is a complex process. It requires a balanced understanding of a number of areasautomotive history, economics, the evolution of the Dealer distribution system, and cultural-social evolution. And it demands an understanding of the rapidly developing strategies that must realign all industry to an intensively competitive international marketplace, clearly driven by customer requirements.
...Every Purse and Purpose, named after Alfred P. Sloan's description of the first "reengineered" General Motors in the 1920s, addresses the history of the automotive business and all the factors that have impacted it. It focuses on GM's rise to industry and world dominance through the "cradle to grave" strategy. Through a decade-by-decade analysis, it traces the company's dramatic success. It also documents its fall following its second major reengineering during the 1980s largely due to a failure to recognize the emergence of the empowerment of the customer. Then, the industry's strategic comeback in the early '90s is analyzed. Finally, the book provides a detailed prescription for positioning GM to recapture world leadership in the 21st century, based on a return to its roots in product alignment combined with leadership in total customer service.
Global economic power in the next century will come from the culture, trade alliances and business strategy that produces the world's dominant automaker. Every Purse and Purpose projects the likely course of this battle based on an in-depth understanding of automotive business history, the evolution of strategy in the business and the cultural development of the competing nations.
