outrageous price.......2006-11-21
This is perhaps the most expensive book besides collectables. Judging from the size and amount of information, it probably worths $5 - but I had to buy it simply because the professor uses it as textbook.
Granted that this is a book for business management professionals or to-be's, but this does not mean the book should be this expensive. You'll know what I mean when you see the book. I think they they are taking advantage of that fact that most people buy this book get reimbursed - my self for one will get reimbursement from my company, but I resent the fact that I have to buy such an expensive book and waste my company's money only because I have to. This is robbery - it's not printing book, it's more like printing money.
Excellent book.......2006-08-01
This is a short and concise book . I used it in one of my graduate courses, and found it very helpful.
Essential Reading.......2006-02-25
I used a previous edition of Ms. Munter's book as a text in a graduate course in management communications. The latest edition adds some new subjects and is still one of the best books on the subject. If you could only have one book on this subject this would be a good choice. Even though this book covers a broad base of communication skills (strategy, written, verbal and non-verbal, typography, graphical and prepresentation skills), each subject is covered in considerable depth. This book should be on the office shelf of every manager who needs to communicate effectively.

If you want to move into managerial problem solving quickly, involving group dynamics, this book is a right choice!.......2005-09-20
Appended below is my syntopic review of two classic books on problem solving:
1. Successful Problem Management, by Michael Sanderson;
2. Managerial Problem Solving, by Charles Margerison;
These two books have been my constant companions since the 70's when I first embarked on a managerial career in engineering & production operations. They were also my very first books on the subject.
What I like about the first book is the more than 1,200 checklist questions that have been formulated hierarchically in helping me to understand & build, in stages (the author prefers the term `strategic elements'), my problem solving model. The questions are also flexible enough to apply to a wide range of different problems & still be engineered to the details of specific applications.
Additionally, the book also presents some basic skeleton strategies for such situations as:
- diagnosis for problem definition;
- getting organized for a project;
- generating & developing a new idea;
- operating in an entrepreneurial situation;
In contrast to a lot of other problem solving books, I find that the second book focuses essentially on group interaction & interpersonal behaviour in managerial meetings. The author's fundamental premise is that a manager's working day is punctuated by meetings, formal or chance, to resolve problems (including identifying & exploiting opportunities).
This book, written in clear & simple language, provides expert guidance in how managers can improve results in such meetings. It is targeted primarily for the world of production, marketing, finance & other managerial functions, fully backed by well-designed case studies.
Very seldom does one come across such a problem solving book that draws such a fine distinction between problems, solutions & managerial actions.
I also find the last few chapters of the book very insightful. The chapter entitled `Getting Cornered' illustrates the pitfalls of the manager who is cornered by colleagues & subordinates who disagreed on a particular issue, whereas another chapter, entitled `Conversation Seduction', examines the problem in a meeting where the discussion is seemingly going nowhere.
Over the years, I have learnt a lot from the above two authors as I move on progressively to tackle varied problems & exploiting abundant opportunities in my managerial career path.
Even today, after having left the corporate world for more than two decades, I still make effort & time to `chat', from time to time, with the two authors through their wonderful work.
I would like to sum up my syntopic review in this manner:
- if you want to understand the fundamental principles of problem management, with an easy-to-use building block approach, start with the fist book;
- if you want to move into managerial problem solving involving group dynamics, the second book is the right book;
Why don't you get both books?

Book Description
In its lace making heyday in the late eighteenth century, Ipswich, Massachusetts boasted 600 lace makers in a town of only 601 households. George Washington himself, a lace afficionado, paid a visit to Ipswich in 1789 to support its extraordinary domestic textile industry.
While most research on lace making concentrates on its cottage origins in the seventeenth century, Marta Cotterell Raffel places the Ipswich industry squarely within the wider context of eighteenth-century manufacture, economics, and culture. Identifying what differentiates Ipswich lace from other American or European lace, she explores how lace makers learned their skills, and how they combined a traditional lace making education with attention to market-driven changes in style. Showing how the shawls, bonnets, and capes created by the lace makers often designated the social position or political affiliation of the wearer, she offers a unique and fascinating guide to our material past.
With extensive research based on hundreds of previously unseen artifacts and documents, Raffel shows how this preindustrial labor and craft--absolutely central to the economic health of Ipswich--created and sustained forms of early American culture and shaped an entire community for several generations.
Useful appendixes include a glossary of terms; a list of contemporary sources for supplies, lace organizations, and textile museums with lace collections; and two sample patterns with pricking and instructions.
