    Book Description

When you're 50 or 60 years old, the job market is a combat zone, no matter what your skills or experience. Battle-scarred veterans report that they're passed over time and again for jobs which they are eminently qualified for. Successful applicants, often with fewer skills and almost always with far less experience, do seem to have one significant thing in common-they are younger, sometimes painfully younger.

There was a time, not that long ago, when you automatically retired at 60 or 65, presuming you actually lived that long. Today, many seniors are still going strong at 60, 70, even 80 and don't intend to retire. Or they've tried the beach hut or snow cottage and found them…BORING. Increasingly, many such seniors are choosing new careers, ones that fit their particular strengths.

Finding a Job After 50 is a "guerilla guide" that gives you the powerful tools you need to substitute real satisfaction for the rat race. Getting the job you want may be a battle, so you have to approach it as such, equipping yourself with the right weapons to succeed in today's job market. Your arsenal better be well stocked before you enter the fray.

You are probably healthier, better educated, and more experienced that any previous generation at the same age. You may be the best man or woman for the job. But you're going to have to prove it. To do so, you must know what (and who) you're up against and how to beat it (them)! This book will show you how.

    Book Description

As a person gets older, the ability to find meaningful employment decreases. In this hands-on career tutorial, business journalist Betsy Cummings details how to look for a new job, and gives specific tips on gaining the experience and skills necessary to transition back to the workplace after a long absence. Her advice includes ways to rewrite a resum for todays job market, how to prepare for a job interview (especially if the interviewer is much younger than the applicant!), which companies are looking to hire workers who are over 50, and the various networking and Internet strategies older workers can use to improve their employment opportunities.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Nothing new in this book.......2005-12-03

There is nothing really new in this book. The advice and tips in it are the same old stuff that you have already seen a hundred times. Don't burn bridges; network; keep your chin up; be prepared for rejection. A lot of it is psychobabble handholding about soul searching and knowing what you really want to do etc. etc. I suppose if you have not yet seen this stuff in Dear Abbey it may be useful to you.

Some of the advice seems to be cut right out of a recruiter's handbook, and is actually bad advice. Here is an example from the book. The author is talking about how to update your resume to enhance your chances of landing an interview. The book advises to keep it recent, "limit your list of work experience to the last fifteen years" to avoid appearing old, I guess. And yet a main thread in the book points out that your long experience is a selling point. If you fracture your resume, you will end up having to explain the holes in it anyway. I would have advised to include the entire history, but keep the older information very brief.

Here is a particularly disturbing comment. "Skip listing the bachelor's degree you got in 1950 (or if you do mention it, leave off the year you graduated)". So what do you do if the job you are applying for requires that degree?

I just served on a search committee to find a director for our local library, and we reviewed dozens of resumes. In every case where the candidate left off the degree dates it aroused suspicion about what that candidtate was trying to hide, like maybe the fact that they are over 50 years old. The age was not an issue with us, but the trickery was. Don't do this. It is a red flag. And even if you do get an interview based on such a dishonest resume, you had better dye your hair and go for the extreme makeover as well so that they will not notice that you are old when you show up for the interview. And when they realize that you have tricked them into interviewing you, the trick may backfire. This is just bad advice.

I was hoping to find a lot more real-world, practical information in the book and was disappointed.

This is a great resource, however its value is limited because there is no answer key for the workbook. The publisher says that the only way to get the answers is to spend $104.95 on the instructors CD. This really should be stated up front before people buy this book and learn the hard way.

This book gives excellent coverage of the majority of issues covered in truck driving school. I highly recommend it for people desiring to drive or even those just interested in learning. It is interesting, well layed out and very to-the-point. After completion of driving school and passing the cdl, it is still a valuable resource to keep in the truck.

2 out of 5 stars poor edit skills.......2003-08-01

This book has some huge errors. The writting in this text seems as if a differant person wrote every paragraph. As an instructor, this is very frustrating. I've had many a student request the chance to string the writer up by the neck. For example, it asks to discribe a van body but has no discription of it in the book. Trust me, I've looked. It also displays insulated and petro tankers, and then proceeds to label them incorrectly. I beleive, either the writter is a little slow in the head, or the editor needs to find a new job. The first addition of this text had errors too, but the second edition only got worse. To bad for me, I haven't yet found another text book that covers this information to the degree needed in a classroom setting. Maybe next time the editor will be awake while he/she is working.

              Book Description

This publication commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty and the Treaty of Peace with Japan is timely, relevant, and edifying. To quote the editors, Akira Iriye and Robert A. Wampler, it "affords a good opportunity to reflect on problems as well as achievements, on continuities as well as change, in postwar U.S.-Japanese relations." It also encapsulates the vicissitudes of a remarkable, and enduring, bilateral relationship, which former American ambassador to Japan Mike Mansfield called "the most important--bar none."

The pivotal part played by the individual American ambassadors in shaping--and at times smoothing--the Pacific partnership is specifically addressed in this collection of fourteen essays by prominent American scholars. They examine the past, present, and future of the U.S.-Japanese relationship in the context of the partnership's interrelated aspects--political, strategic, economic, and cultural. In so doing, they confirm the contribution of the peace treaties to regional stability in Asia, at the same time indicating the areas where that stability could be threatened, especially in the economic realm, with bitter trade disputes almost upsetting the fragile alliance in the 1980s. That was when many Americans began to see Japan's economic advance as a challenge to U.S. postwar supremacy.

Are these perceptions shaped by history or are they molded by the cultural backgrounds of the two countries? Such questions are highlighted in the animated accounts on the role the mass media play in how each nation views the other. However, despite the frequent clashes and bouts of turbulence, "the two peoples ... from divergent cultural backgrounds ... have somehow learned to live together, even to appreciate one another," concludes one author.

No one looking ahead in 1951 could have predicted the remarkable turn of events of the next five decades or imagined the benefits both parties have reaped from the alliance. The essays in this volume brilliantly underscore the importance of the U.S.-Japan relationship and provide a clear understanding of the priorities of the two nations as they stand on the threshold of a new century.

              1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money.......2001-01-06

I bought this book as a Christmas present for a friend thinking that I was getting him a great present. However, when I recieved the book, I opened it to see for myself how funny it really was. NOT FUNNY AT ALL! All this book consists of is mindless ramblings of celebrities and nothing at all even close to funny. I never ended up giving this to my friend because it was so lame. I showed the book to my Mom to see if maybe she knew someone who liked corny stuff... she told me she would never give that book to anyone. I am not the kind of person who is hard to entertain. Usually if a see a someone get kicked in the face on T.V., I'm laughing all day. I'm looking at the book now trying to find some "fabulous" quoteto share with you, but SURPRISE! There does not exist even ONE that is worthy. You can be sure that I'm sending this one back!

5 out of 5 stars probably the funniest book i have ever read.......1999-10-27

i dont read a whole lot of books, but this is a great one to put on a coffee table or wherever, it is HYSTERICAL!

              5 out of 5 stars Hysterical -- and a Great Ego Boost!!!.......1999-04-20

Okay -- so celebrities make millions and you don't? Well, this will even the score -- you're smarter than they are! At least that's how you'll feel after reading this. These movie stars, etc. have no idea how funny they sound... Especially loved the Tori Spelling quote (which I won't share!) A very funny book....and one that makes you wonder how these people can earn so much!

5 out of 5 stars Another laugh out loud book from the Petras'.......1998-11-06

A friend gave me the Petras book "Stupid Sex" which was so good I had to get their newest. "Stupid Celebrities" may be even better -- though what's better than great? This is a very funny book and will make you look at some very famous people in an entirely different way. Outstanding.

              Book Description

The Greeks honored Zeus, the Romans revered Juno, but modern civilization worships a different sort of god: Celebrity. Face it, we follow the stars’ every move, fashion choice, and deliciously dishy affairs. Now Kathryn Petras and Ross Petras, authors of Unusually Stupid Americans, pull the demanding divas, screwball stars, and celebu-twits off their pedestals–and prove it doesn’t take a degree in rocket science to become famous. Cases in point:

              • Courtney Love misses an important court date relating to “possession of a controlled substance” because she can’t find a professional bodyguard at the last minute.
              • Mariah Carey’s entourage includes a skirt-from-touching-floor specialist, a towel hand-off person, and a professional drink holder/lifter.
              • Savvy traveler Paris Hilton concludes that all of Europe is, “like, French.”
              • Mensa candidate and rocker Tommy Lee is pretty sure that Winston Churchill was president during the Civil War, that the numeric equivalent of pi is “the two-equals-MC-squared thing,” and that an isosceles triangle is “somewhere in Bermuda.”

Feuds, faith, family, money, sex, tantrums, travel–no star-studded stone is left unturned. Filled with jaw-dropping anecdotes, quirky quotes, and special stupid-celebrity awards, Unusually Stupid Celebrities provides a red-faced glimpse of the red carpet.

5 out of 5 stars Outrageously funny and not to be missed!.......2007-08-11

I read this book while stuck on a train that was delayed for hours. It was so really ENTERTAINING that the time flew by!

I can tell you that I will never, ever look at any "star" with the same sense of admiration. Sometimes behind the sparkling image there is absolutely nothing of any value. Combine those empty-heads with a super-sized false sense of entitlement and a BIG MOUTH, and you've got the mega-laughs of Kathryn & Ross Petras' wonderful book!

This book was one of the more entertaining ones I've read. I was in suspense most the time and laughed until my stomach hurt. Great writers and great info. I reccomend this book to all who enjoy celebrity gossip and stories.

              5 out of 5 stars OH NO YOU DIDN'T ! (SAY THAT).......2007-05-24

If you ever wondered what your favorite celebrities are like in "real life", you've GOT to read this book. Mostly, you will find yourself laughing out loud but be warned some of the quotes in Unusually Stupid Celebrities are so shockingly stupid, they may bring you to tears. All in all, this book is great, light-reading fun! I highly recommend it. Kathryn and Ross Petras have once again produced a well-written, hilarious, winner! (Take this one to the beach.)
