1 out of 5 stars This book was a complete waist of money........2007-04-17

I completely agree with the previous reviewer. The book was not helpful at all. It is not practical. It does not even contain examples of questions that are commonly asked during interviews, such as 'Tell us a bit about yourself', or 'What makes you a good candidate?'.

After being frustrated with the book, I went to the local public libraray and checked out a few books on the subject of job interviewing and also a few books containing questions and answers to the most frequently asked questions during interviews. The only difference between a law enforcement and civilian job interview is the second portion of the interview and that is the questions to hypothetical situations that commonly arise on the job. For this part you need good, solid common sense and judgment. Again, go to your local public library. You'll be surprised of the wealth of helpful information that you'll find there.

    Good luck to all!

2 out of 5 stars Poorly written and not helpful.......2007-02-02

This book was not what I wanted. I was looking for a practical guide that gave examples of questions typically asked in a law enforcement interview and examples of good answers to those questions. This book is more of a workbook that makes the reader develop his own ideas for typical interview questions and answers. I could have done that on my own without paying over $30.

The book is also poorly written, which made me question the qualifications of the author. The author apparently has a Ph.D., but he has not mastered the use of punctuation. Here are a couple of examples from the book. On page 36, he writes, "Strategies that do not produce a desirable image of you, as being genuine, or showing you as being comfortable with what you are saying; will in the end come across as artificial and scheming." On the following page, he writes, "Why? Because: people with specialized training should not, be given any advantage over people, without such training." Because there were similar errors throughout the book, it was hard for me to take his advice seriously.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RESOURCE!.......2007-01-08

I have been reading book after book for my upcoming police tests and this is by far the BEST book for interviews. The information I have learned from this book applies to almost ANY interview not just the police one. I found that I had already begun categorizing people so I knew how to communicate in their language in my interviews for my small business. I am excited to try these techniques in the police oral interview. I feel EXTREMELY prepared for the interview thanks to this book!

    2 out of 5 stars Absurdly overpriced!.......2007-04-18

My worst investment in BW books so far. It is not more than a pamphlet, with very low quality figures (print screens almost impossible to read).
I expected much more from the price I paid.

1 out of 5 stars Why is this classed as a books and not a pamphlet?.......2006-10-05

OK, so size isn't everything. But for the price of this A5 pamphlet, you could buy an encyclopedia sized book on the same subject.

Don't think the bigger books are competition for this one, though. They're designed for people who want to learn a subject and are prepared to put the time and effort in to do so; the target market for this comic is the kind who just want to parrot off answers in an interview.

    2 out of 5 stars Overpriced.......2006-08-02

The book is good when you need to do a quick self-examination or pick questions for the interview.
However, I think if you've already got $60 to spend, it would be better to add another 20 and buy something more solid.

5 out of 5 stars seemed pretty decent to me.......2006-04-12

I saw Anurag at Sapphire, and it seems that this book is what it says it is. Great book for those who want to truly understand SAP BW.

    5 out of 5 stars good buy.......2006-04-12

you get what you pay for, worthwhile. better than other BW interview books on the market.

4 out of 5 stars Bad subject, great presentation.......2003-02-13

Madonna is the ultimate emperor in new clothes (all pomp, no circumstance), but these Rolling Stone Files collections are well organized, easy to follow, and fascinating in their ability to let us follow a career via some of the best writing in the business. Madonna is a fascinating anomaly because of her almost freakish ambition combined with an appalling lack of real talent. That makes this a very readable collection, even if I never listen to the music or see the godawful movies.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2000-04-07

Great if you love Madonna, as I do. Also, good if you are just interested in reading about her. She is fascinating....always has been, always will be. Madonna is a living legend! Also recommend, Encyclopedia Madonnica.....Madonna is absolutely fabulous!

5 out of 5 stars The 3 best books about Madonna.......1999-06-14

    1. This one (Rolling Stone Files) 2. Encyclopedia Madonnica (Matthew Rettenmund) 3. Madonna Unauthorized (Christopher Anderson)

With these 3 books you will learn more about Madonna then she even knows about herself.

Mandatory for any fanatic who wants to know more about this show-biz lady, other then what they see and hear on radio, TV, onstage, and onscreen.

    Viva Ciccone!

    4 out of 5 stars Triumphant!!!.......1999-05-04

Rolling Stone and Madonna? Why not.Her being in the cover on all reincartions deserves a compilation.Essential to all Madonnaics, here we could trace her humble begginings, rise to fame, the endless critical scrutiny...it's all here and more.Missing though are the tongue in cheek covers, picture, and one liners.(Perhaps, one need to buy RS coffee table book Covers,to totally enjoy the moment).Concise, right on track and enjoyable!!!

Being a Madonnaologists in my own write, I enjoyed this history. I also found the Madonna stuff in POSTMODERNISM FOR BEGINNERS, intriguing.

4 out of 5 stars A valuable collection for REM fans.......2005-05-31

There's something that I really love about collections like this. It's a time capsule! I think it's just great to have the opportunity to read things that are not reflections of years of consideration and debate, but are actually the attitudes of the day. It can be eye-opening.

At the same time, there are ways in which it can be disappointing. One of the things you get from this book is that Rolling Stone had more or less the same 10-12 things to say about REM over 14 years and a dozen albums. (eg. Stipe's lyrics are ambiguous and often hard to understand, the band is known for its political and social conscience, etc etc).

Nevertheless, when just given the opportunity to talk, REM never fails to say interesting things. (It's priceless to read Stipe's reference to two oranges being nailed together, resurfacing, years later). You may put up with some repetition, and some real rock critic posturing, but it will be worth it.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Sourcebook on R.E.M........2000-05-01

This book should be on the bookshelf of every R.E.M. fan. It is jam packed with all kinds of information about the band. I only wish that the book included glossy photo's of the band. I think that you should be forewarned that the book covers the band from the time period of 1982's "Chronic Town" to 1994's "Monster". Overall, if you are an R.E.M. fan buy the book you will not be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful archival tribute to R.E.M........2000-04-05

A nice collection of articles, factoids, interviews with bandmembers, interesting quotes and opinions on R.E.M. from music biz insiders. It was a pleasure to read and very informative. Nice pictures. This book is a great start for those just learning about R.E.M., the folks who have fallen in love with their music and want to learn how these 4 guys from Athens could possibly be saying exactly what is in your head. This is also a good companion piece for the longterm R.E.M. fan, those who cannot live without their music, there are lots of interesting tidbits to savor. You WILL enjoy this book!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Compendium of Reiews over the Years from RS.......1999-03-26

I got this book for Christmas and I was very hopeful that it would tell me 'The Bruce Story" since I didn't really know it. Well, it did and it didn't. Not knowing much about Springsteen's life or career and knowing only the music, reading this book, which consists of chronological news items, interviews and articles that appeared in ROLLING STONE, I got an interesting overview of his career and the way the public's perception of him has changed. The book is almost as interesting for the things it doesn't say, for instance, it says virtually nothing about the biggest event of Springsteen's career: his bitter two year battle to end his contract with Producer Mike Appel. (that is actually covered better in an out of print book you can try and order here called DOWN THUNDER ROAD) Also, his much publicized extra-marital affair with his band-member and current wife rates about 4 lines. Also, one article starts off telling us in a painfully beautiful reminisence about his early years and drops off just when things were getting interesting, way before he got signed. Overall, this book actually shows what a poor job ROLLING STONE has done over the years on all matters BRUCE. It's a good read - a must-have for completists but NOT where to begin if you have just gotten bit.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK ABOUT THE "BOSS"!!!!!!!!!!!.......1998-07-21

Hear his music and you are fascinated!! Read his songs and you are fascinated from the very "deep" from his songs. And this book gives you much informationen about "THE BOSS". He was THE BOSS, he IS THE BOSS and he will EVER BE THE BOSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Must have for everyone!.......2007-06-22

Whether you're a hiring manager, looking for a job, or work for a living, then this book is a must have for your library. The point is that this book has great insights applicable to any interview plus the expected insights into looking for a job. It will never go stale.

For many years I managed people in a technical environment for several major US companies. The book is right about what a manager is looking for, how they will react, and the flow of an interview. The book also helped me to be a better interviewer.

Oh, and yes I've used the book when looking for new jobs. It's seen several uses and it's been re-read several times over the years. One specific insight is how, or at least how, an interview progresses. In one case I even forced an interview into the pattern in the book with great success.

Bottom line - one heck of an insightful, easy to read books out there.

Great Book. I learned how to approach my job search as well as how to approach each interview differently. This book helps you focus on the important things as well as help you ask the important questions

              Book Description

Business 2.0 magazine publishes an annual cover story called "The 101 Dumbest Moments in Business." Featuring 101 hilarious items about the year's most unbelievably stupid business blunders, it's hugely popular with its more than half a million print subscribers—and with the two million people who read it on the Web this year. In The Dumbest Moments in Business History, the editors of Business 2.0 have compiled the best of their first four annual issues plus great (or not so great, if you happen to be responsible) moments from the past.

From New Coke to the Edsel, from Rosie magazine to Burger King's "Herb the Nerd," the book's highlights include:
              • a Romanian car plant whose workers banded together to eliminate the company's debt by donating sperm and giving the proceeds to their employer
              • the Heidelberg Electric Belt, a sort of low-voltage jockstrap sold in 1900 to cure impotence, kidney disorders, insomnia, and many other complaints
              • the time Beech-Nut sold "100% pure apple juice" that contained nary a drop of apple juice
              • the Midas ad campaign featuring an elderly customer ripping open her blouse and showing her "mufflers" to the guys in the shop
              • a London videogame maker that sought volunteers who would allow the company to place ads on the headstones of deceased relatives

Grouped by theme—bosses gone bad, criminally creative accounting, etc.—The Dumbest Moments in Business History is a fun and funny look at the big-time ways that big-time companies have screwed up through the decades.

Doesn't live up to it's billing. Basically a hodge-podge of anecdotes and quotes, many of them familiar, or even tired, by now. A lot of the anecdotes pertain to criminal scams instead of business blunders. Many of the pieces relate incidents that happened a long time ago...early 20th Century or earlier. If you're expecting to find a good source of useful business lessons learned, you'll likely be disappointed. Also, the authors better not quit their day jobs...they don't show much promise as comedy writers. Most of their attempts at humor are forced and/or fall short...I didn't laugh out loud once as I read the book (and I think I have a pretty good sense of humor). At about 150 pages, with lots of white space, this book does not deliver the value you'd expect based on its current price. If you feel you must read it, at least wait until the paperback comes out or buy it used.

Whether or not these are, in fact, the dumbest may be subject to debate but they will certainly serve the purposes of Horowitz and the editors of Business 2.0 magazine, assisted by Mark Athitakis and Mark Lasswell. (For my own purposes, I will simply refer to them collectively as the book's co-authors.) Throughout nine chapters, they examine "useless products, ruinous deals, clueless bosses, and other signs of unintelligent life in the workplace." The material offers substantial entertainment value ("What on earth were they thinking?") but also provides several legitimate business lessons which, hopefully, will enable an enlightened reader to avoid making the same mistakes. How were these "moments" selected? There were three primary criteria: First of all, nobody gets killed...Second, the stories must have a discernible moment of utter fatuity rather than a slowly festering brainlessness...Third, when some form of business buffoonery is particularly chronic, only the choicest example makes the cut." These are obviously not dumb criteria.

The titles of the nine chapters correctly indicate how the co-authors organized evidence of "unintelligent life in the workplace." It seems eminently appropriate that in Chapter One: Research and Development, they include this familiar observation: "Everything that can be invented has been invented." Charles H. Duell, Federal Office of Patents commissioner, 1899. Subsequent chapters examine Human Resources, Manufacturing and Production, Senior Management, Public Relations, Sales and Marketing, Accounting, Legal, and Information Technology. The usual suspects include New Coke, the Edsel, the Waterworld film, 17th century tulip bulbs, and Charles K. Ponzi. However, there are dozens of other "moments" of which I was previously unaware.

I also appreciate the wealth of quotations, especially when provided by those (such as Mr. Duell) who should have known better. For example, then president and CEO of Digital Equipment Corporation Kenneth Olson at the annual convention of the World Future Society in 1977: "There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in their home." Years earlier, Thomas Watson, Sr. (then CEO of IBM) estimated that the worldwide market for personal computers was fewer than ten. Presumably those who headed Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) agreed with Watson and Olson. How else to explain their generous provision of information to Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak which enabled them to complete the design of what became the Apple I computer?

As I read this entertaining as well as informative book, I recalled the suggestion (but not the source) that Russian historians can predict the past with absolute accuracy and Theodore Roosevelt's comments about "the man in the arena." Also Thomas Edison's response to an assistant's frustration after 90+ "failures" of a research project. Edison did not view them as failures. Rather, he explained, those efforts had merely indicated how NOT to solve the given problem.

For me, at least, the most valuable lessons to be learned are from failures, not successes. Now more than ever before, success in the business world heavily depends upon innovative thinking. Presumably the co-authors agree with me that "useless products, ruinous deals, clueless bosses, and other signs of unintelligent life in the workplace" are probably the inevitable price to be paid for achieving that success.

It's about time someone wrote a book like this, exposing the greed and stupidity rampant in American capitalism. It's like Esquire's Dubious Achievements for the business world, and one of the funniest books I have ever read.
