Having consumed several books on the topic, this is an easy to read and useful book with good facts, lists, and questions to ask. It is not as detailed or as comprehensive as others available. Appendix A's sample forms, timelines and documents for planning and evaluating the event and Appendix B's lists of Terms and Phrases are very useful. I think it is good for someone who may wish to plan their own event, but not detailed enough for an individual who wants to become a professional in the industry. Event examples they use are from their professional experience and would not be applicable for one planning a private event. The pictures are in black and white and the detail is not clear. A few excellent color pictures would make a real difference.

This is the best event planning book. It covers all aspects of event planning for gala charity balls etc. and special functions. I flicked through other event planning books and they were mostly about small events such as meetings and parties. This book is comprehensive in covering all aspects of big events.

I'm writing my first book and this was exactly what I was looking for in helping me promote it. It's brief, to the point, with excellent tips. Ignore the negative review below as that person is stuck in the dark ages. Promoting books goes beyond just signing, one has to be innovative and creative and this book has some great ideas.
Also, when writing a book one doesn't need or have time to read a 300-page book on how to promote your book. One needs something quick and informative and this book delivered the goods!

If you want wisdom on how to hawk your books in the best Zig Ziglar style (i.e. with the dignity of a used-car salesman), you'll love this book. Otherwise save your[money], and buy Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual. It has all the information on promotion you want, plus hundreds of pages of additional material you need.

Every budding author dreams of having an autograph session at his/her local bookstore. But you will know why this egocentric exercise won't help sell a single copy of your new book after you read this new guide.
Its large format made reading it easy; it wasn't in extra large print but I still didn't need reading glasses since the layout made it simple to keep track of where one was. There was plenty of bold face type which helped make certain points jump out to me when they were important.
But the best part about the book was the content, of course. There are plenty of helpful hints which will aid you in promoting your own book, pamphlet, newsletter, or even tapes. There are also some warnings about self-defeating things and how to avoid them.
Why not just set up in a bookstore and have an autograph party? This is more for the author, and lazy bookstore event planners than it is for readers; unless you are well-known. Mr. Gelb tells how to let your potential book buyers know that you have something to offer. This is much more important than occupying a chair while you watch people buy other authors' books!
There are tips on how to work with bookstore event coordinators and the media for maximum short-term effect and to set up for future good contacts. There are tips on public speaking and why it is so important to the writer wanting to sell books. Also included is how to be prepared for speaking emergencies. How do you turn out large groups to your event? The author explains this in detail, offering tried and true methods which he has done. He confesses to holding events where only one person showed up, and how to learn from his experience so that it doesn't happen to you!
Other helpful chapters include: When to start expecting pay for seminars and speaking engagements, Why and how to become the local expert, Using business cards to advantage, What time of day to hold book events, Why you shouldn't use your own photo to promote the event...and what photo you SHOULD use.
There is a section at the end for print and internet resources. his book also tells ways of keeping in contact with book buyers long after the sale via web pages, newsletters, mailing lists, etc. Your time is precious, learn how to save and protect it by making wise choices doing your book tour.

Whether you sell out to a large (New York) publisher or publish yourself, the author must do the promotion. Publishers produce and distribute books, they do not promote them (just ask an author). Your publisher will get your books into the stores but you must prompt the potential buyer to go into the stores to buy--and pull the books through the distribution system. Most successful authors spend a large percentage of their time promoting their book.
The conflict is that the author (normally a quiet, reclusive person) must become a promoter (a gregarious out-going person). What you need is some knowledgeable, friendly support. This book is your crutch.

A Good Basic Book.......2001-01-22
Facilitation Made Easy is a good basic book for the beginning facilitator. It provides step by step instruction on how to set up your workshop. It provides a good overview of listening skills, conflict resolution, how to keep things moving along, managing time and many other useful skills. I used it as a guideline for my first Joint Application Development workshop and got very good reviews on the workshop. I recommend the book to anyone who is responsible for bringing a diverse group of people together for the purpose of getting something accomplished.

This was a letter sent to the Author. Dear Ms. Cage I just finished reading your book Can You Start Monday? It was the most informative book I have ever read about the job search. I have attended many interviews over the past ten years and at the majority of them I felt very anxious and apprehensive. Now, I finally realize that being very prepared and having a good attitude are essentially the keys to feeling confident about myself and my abilities. I always felt uncomfortable "bragging" about my education and skills. I now realize that confidently speaking about myself is a sign of healthy confidence. This book is by far the most insteresting and inspirational of all the Latino financial books so far written. Believe me! I have read them all. It is a true road map in finding financial and personal greatness. As Barajas writes" the why is more important than the how". It is practical and fun to read. As a Financial Planner, I have seen many of the cultural barriers that Bajaras points out with my clients. I asked to borrow a copy and let me tell you, the book is not just for Latinos. I am glad someone has had the courage to write a book like this. Louis' book is revolutionary and groudbreaking, wow! The Latino Journey to Financial Greatness will change your life! Louis is the first and only Latino author to address the culturally conditioned beliefs about money that limit latinos. All latinos should read this book. This book should be required reading at the high school and collegiate level. The book is a very easy book to understand yet its message is pure and powerful. You will not change and you will not start your path to financial greatness until you make yourself aware of what is limiting you. Louis opens your eyes to the cultural limiting beliefs that hold us all back!
The Journey to greatness starts by focusing on your strengths and delegating your weaknesses. Despite what Home Depot tries to make you believe, A do it yourselfer is wasting their valuable time on a weakness. Some people waste a life time on careers and task that take them off their path to greatness. I ask you today. Are you a specialists or are you a generalists? Who would you go to today if you had a brain tumor, a neurosurgeon or your campadre that is a real estate agent, insurance salesman, travel agent and notary. Louis identifies this cultural barrier in his book as Mi Campadre, Consulting (Non)Experts. We as latinos do this all the time and aren't aware of it. The book is divided into two parts. The first part makes you aware about the 10 barriers or potholes on your journey to financial greatness. It is also very inspiring and motivating. Only after you are aware of the barriers will you be ready for the second part of the book, the 10 steps to financial greatness. I use the word Awareness because it is the key that Louis Barajas will hand you to unlock the imaginary door that you have placed on your path to financial greatness.

The best recommendation I can give this book is that I am going to suggest it to my congregants. It is written for them, that is, hard working, Spanish-speaking immigrants who may not understand how money really works. And by the way, I understand the book is soon to be available in Spanish.
The reason I like this book as a pastor, is that what Barajas means by "financial greatness" is not an idolatry of the dollar, but a much broader approach to true happiness. In his how-to approach, his illustrations, and his closing forms to complete, he guides the reader through a wholistic approach to life.
First is the question: what are your major life foci and roles? He gives the examples of foci that include physical health and spiritual growth. Then he deals with roles that are associated with each focus, e.g., spouse, parent, coworker. And this like every other chapter concludes with a written exercise to help the reader answer the focus question.
Chapters on "Core Values," "Ideal Outcomes," "Starting Point," "Obstacles," "Resources," "Strategy," "Practical Systems," "Monitor Progress," and "Celebrate and Share" follow. This is a good pedogogy and an integrate approach. Money is central to but not solely what he means by wealth.
I plan to give this book to my compadre, and once he has read it, to discuss it with him. I think it will help him manage his hard earned money as well as prioritize his values. And that will make him not only a more proficient bread winner, but a more grateful recipient of the banquet of life.
