4 out of 5 stars somewhat helpful in organizing my search efforts.......2007-10-02

this book didn't say anything new that you can't find elsewhere or on the internet. but it surely saves me a lot of trouble googling by putting everything together.

2 out of 5 stars Nice Overview... but there are better books out there.......2007-07-06

When I checked out this book, I was expecting some innovative method that would drastically change my approach to the job search. Instead, what I read was repackaged information that you could find on the Internet. Instead, I would recommend 10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search: Everything You Need to Get the Job You Want in 24 Hours - Or Less. I found that book to be a more concise and thought provoking tool that helped me succeed in getting my most recent job as a Regional Sales Director.

5 out of 5 stars Great Job Search Book.......2007-06-13

I have to tell you this book is outstanding. It was both very informative and entertaining. Searching for a job is never fun. And if you're fortunate, you'll never have to search for many jobs in your life. If you're not experienced at looking for work, the search process can be arduous at best. This book provides a structure/methodology by which to conduct a highly effective job search and helps ease the "pain" of looking for work. I would recommend it to anyone from a new college grad to an experienced executive.

5 out of 5 stars At last....a book that "understands".......2007-02-05

As I read through the Pierson method I was so happy to see a job search method that combines an excellent description of the realities of a job search with a true understanding of the job seeker. Readers will come to know why they balk at the idea of a cold call and spend many hours surfing the internet. And they will also gain confidence in themselves, along with a system that works.

Pierson knows the job search trail and he knows what it's like to look for a job. Bravo for this wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Focus, Structure, Accountability.......2006-10-19

The hardest part of a job search, at least for me, is treating the search itself like a job. Pierson provides structure and methodology to your search but also, and importantly, accountability to yourself through the use of a progress chart. He offers a common sense, step by step process that helps you create an effective marketing plan for yourself along with the not inconsequential side effect of a boost in self confidence.

I am a Career Coach and as a matter of practice I ask all my clients to read Michelle Tullier's book on networking. This is the Bible for all those in transition. Regardless of the individual's background, position that s/he has held or whatever they are seeking in the future this book guides the reader through all the important elements that are required for successful networking. I have used this book extensively while I was in transition and "fell in love with it" since I found it so thorough, resourceful and helpful. The value that one gets out of this book is by far exceeding its minimal cost. Some of my clients purchased this book as used (in excellent condition) for less than the shipping cost.
I highly recommend it and applaud Michelle for doing such a good job with it.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource!!!.......2005-09-26

If you are looking to purchase just one book on networking, look no further. This book not only has answers to standard networking questions, but also addresses topics that I have not come across in other networking books, such as "networking for introverts." (Yes, there is hope for us yet!)

Especially useful are the appendices which list, by industry, ideas for possible networking contacts and and websites. Kudos to Dr. Tullier for her on-the-mark advice and insight.

      2 out of 5 stars No support!.......2003-05-04

The book is well written and organized. However, the software that came with the book (one of the main reasons I ordered the book) was difficult to use and had little to no support. I am a software engineer and could not get some of the programs to run after installation. Also, the websites that were listed for troubleshooting help were no longer valid.

5 out of 5 stars My #1 Pick for Online Job-Search.......2000-03-11

As the author of a book on resume writing and president of a firm that specializes in job search services, I am always looking for good resources to add to my library and to recommend to clients. "Jump Start" is my #1 pick for online job-search.

For many job seekers, the prospect of online job search can be daunting. JumpStart Your Online Job Search takes the "daunts" and doubts out of the process! I love the way Pat has taken the "hugeness" of the Internet and broken it down into manageable pieces. I found her ideas for researching jobs and developing keyword lists to be sound advice (I learned some great little tricks myself!).

Especially helpful is the CD that comes with the book (contents are also printed in the appendices) AND her companion sites: where job seekers can get current job-search links and develop a Web resume (the process is fully automated -- you don't have to know a line of HTML!).

Pat was one of the first in the job-search industry to recognize the possibilities of the Internet and has been online since the mid-1990's . . . cumulatively, her thousands of hours online shine throughout this book. It's a must-read for anyone who wants to master the maze of the Internet!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Way to Figure Out Where Your Money is Going!.......2005-05-13

The Money Tracker is wonderful! It's easy to use, either independently, with Judy Lawrence's money management book - The Budget Kit, or with other books on budgeting, getting out of debt, and managing money to meet your financial goals. The book offers a complete calendar of blank forms for entering your spending that will, at the end of a year, provide an illuminating picture of exactly where your money went. The book also includes success stories, money management strategies, a Monthly Money Journal, a Splurge Diary to help you gain awareness about your unplanned budget busting purchases, a Victory Diary where you can record and describe times when you did not give in to splurges, and an Alternative Activities Worksheet listing a variety of alternatives to buying and providing space for you to enter favorite alternative activities. It's a great book, containing a lot of information that will help you gain awareness about your spending habits, stick to your budget, and make progress toward your financial goals. I recommend The Money Tracker highly!!

Part detective novel, part history, and part horror story, The Billion Dollar Monopoly® Swindle not only recounts the true history behind one of the world's most popular board games but also reveals a world where the law sometimes seems as arbitrary and unfair as a "Go directly to jail" card. When Ralph Anspach released his game Anti-Monopoly in 1973, he suddenly found himself in the crosshairs of the formidable Parker Brothers legal machine, which claimed that his use of the word monopoly violated copyright laws. While conducting research to gauge the strength of Parker Brothers' case, Anspach discovered that the corporate giant might not even have the rights to the game.

His investigation revealed the existence of a board game called the Landlord's Game that had been played at least 30 years before Parker Brothers published Monopoly in 1935. When Charles B. Darrow was introduced to this game by a group of Quakers, he copied their board and rules verbatim (even duplicating their misspelling of "Marvin Gardens"), then sold it as his own creation. Parker Brothers supported him, putting a copy of the "story of Monopoly" that cited him as creator in every box.

As for the Anti-Monopoly case, Anspach faced down the game moguls in a battle that went all the way to the Supreme Court (and included an unexpected appearance by future independent counsel Kenneth Starr). You can still play Anti-Monopoly today--and Anspach has even started packaging the original version in the game boxes as a bonus. --Matthew Baldwin

5 out of 5 stars You'll never see Monopoly the same again.......2003-01-16

This is a wonderful tale of Goliath from David's point of view -- you'll be amazed at what an American business will do to defend its false patent, and it would be downright unbelievable in fiction that a judge would do what a judge actually did -- but you have to believe it because it's there in the court records.

Written with self-effacing humor, this book is a fast and pleasurable read. Unfortunately there's quite a lot of misplaced punctuation (especially quotation marks) that distract from the flow -- but aside from that I find no flaws worth mentioning. Recommended to everyone who's ever played Monopoly (so you can find out what the game you've been playing is *really* about).

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining and a fast read.......2002-10-02

This is an entertaining book, and interesting to read about the whole Monopoly inventor scandal and the ramifications of it, but beyond that, the book is extremely biased and full of opinions. One chapter in particular sets up a supposed meeting between the fake inventor and a Parker Bros. executive, in the eyes of how the author thought it probably happened. Admittedly, the author presents it as his opinion only, but personally I prefer to read facts, and think the book would have been better without that possibly false story.

The entire book is (obviously) very biased. If you want to read an objective book about all of this, this probably isn't the one for you. Furthermore, the author's knowledge of antitrust law (particularly toward the end of the book when talking about Hasbro) is not very good. This is the a David v. Goliath story, and the author never lets you forget it. At times, his obsession with establishing who the real inventors of Monopoly are is a bit creepy.

The end of the book includes a pitch for his new board game and computer games, which completely diminished the book, at least in my opinion. It's a book, not an advertisement!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent revelations on the Monopoly invention cover-up.......1999-09-21

Any fan of the Monopoly game or one of the many versions of the game available today will be intrigued by the origin of this fantastic game as told by Anspach through his investigations. The David vs. Goliath battle with the "Microsofts" of the Toy industry, the various owners of Parker Brothers through to Hasbro, Inc. (the current owners), shows how Monopoly is not just their game, but their mission statement and general business goal. Required reading for anyone who ever read The Monopoly Book or The Monopoly Companion.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Original.......1999-09-15

I found this book riveting and very well-written, a startling indictment of not only Parker Brothers (for claiming false invention of a 30-year old folk game and securing a fraudulent patent)but also of the American judicial system, which clearly will roll over and play dead when confronted with an army of corporate lawyers. While the earlier book by Saxon does discuss a precursor to Monopoly, it says nothing about Parker Brothers' underhanded dealings. Nor does it tell the story of how the game fell into the hands of "inventor" Charles Darrow. Another book on the subject by Orbanes (written essentially by and for Parker Bothers/Hasbro) is merely an attempt to whitewash the whole sticky mess so delightfully uncovered by Mr. Anspach. A fine and fascinating read.

5 out of 5 stars A thrilling detective story debunking an American myth........1999-09-08

Anyone who loves Monopoly(R), like I do, and thinks they know the story of the game, like I did, will not be able to put this book down! The official story of the game's origin is a lie. For me, the crushing piece of evidence concerns the correct spelling of MarvEn Gardens. Check it out.
