Book Description
Democratic Rules of Order is a complete, concise, parliamentary guide, made to be adopted as the official rules of order for meetings of any size. It is not an abridgement of other books though it includes much common practice.
Its rules are written in plain language, free of complex protocol and jargon, to enable people to participate in meetings equally and efficiently. Since they do not contain complicated procedures which reduce the rights of members less familiar with them, they produces a significantly higher standard of democracy. Meetings make better decisions with greater ease.
Customer Reviews:
Rules can be too simple, meetings need structure.......2007-01-17
I do NOT like the Democratic Rules of Order. They are so simple that if your group can get by with these rules, your group may have no need for parliamentary procedure. Instead, do everything based on majority vote and require that folks be polite to each other.
This book (7th edition) is 72 pages long, and that counts from the very first title page to the page facing the inside back cover. That page count includes two title pages, the copyright notice page, the table of contents, a page outlining each part, an FAQs section, a sample meeting, calenders 1997 to 2099, a summary of the rules and index and information regarding the authors. The book appears to be self-published and if a good editor has been involved, it would be even shorter. The book offers common sense advice that simply takes up space. An example are the 4 pages titled "Keeping Meetings Flowing."
Under these rules, "The agenda should be made known to members beforehand and can be changed by the members any time during the meeting except when a motion is on the floor." This one rule could cause havoc with a meeting. Under these rules, a decision can also be immediately rescinded by a majority vote.
Robert's Rules is complicated, but Robert's Rules are also thorough. Under Robert's Rules there are times when the member with the best knowledge of Robert's Rules has an advantage. But there is procedure and order to a meeting run under Robert's Rules. The solution is to understand Robert's Rules, not resort to some overly simple set of rules which offer little guidance or structure. Under these rules, it is democracy all the way. Immediately undoing decisions and allowing the agenda to be hi-jacked mid-stream do not seem productive to orderly business.
There are other options out there in between Robert's Rules and the Democratic Rules. If you do not want to use Robert's Rules, consider something in between Robert's Rules and the Democratic Rules.
Esperanto of the "Rules of Order" genre.......2004-09-14
The book is thin and exposes a limited set of rules without which anarchy becomes the hard rule.
Usefull for small meetings but first of all very didactic for those who think that one have from time to time to refresh one's mind about the basics of the democratic exercise.
I would like these Rules be translated and published in French.
Thank you Fred and Peg.
Indispensable, For Anyone Who Conducts Meetings.......2000-10-03
Fred and Peg Francis have done an amazing job. Their book is absolutely indispensable for anyone who conducts meetings or participates in democratic discussion at any level from the parliamentary right down to school boards, environmental protection groups, churches, even book clubs or social gatherings. What the Francis' have admirably succeeded in doing is cutting through the forbidding complexities of running a meeting and reducing them to a simple set of common-sense rules which anyone can follow. With this handy guide, the frustrations which accompany many meetings can be sharply reduced and democratic participation improved. Anyone who has conducted or participated in meetings and struggled with the daunting complexities of Roberts or other rule books will be thrilled at how this little book--you can read it in an hour--will smooth out the rough edges of meetings and greatly improve the harmony and satisfaction of attendees. Over the years I have presided or attended hundreds of meetings at the governmental, business, church and social levels and have often been frustrated by the difficulties of properly chairing such meetings so that all can be heard, everyone can understand the process, and the will of the majority can be formulated and prevail. Much of the difficulty arises from the fact that few have the time or inclination to study the old-style rule books, and are therefore easily intimidated, even tyrannized sometimes, by the very few who know "Roberts" Equally distressing are meetings where the Chair is ill-informed or makes dubious rulings or is swamped by Points or Order or confusion over what are acceptable motions and amendments, when to call for a vote, and so on. By clarifying these points, the Francis' book makes an important contribution to democracy. It can be readily adopted by any group, club, church or corporation and will be of lasting benefit. Speaking personally, I have sat through years of parliamentary debate and appreciate the value, and necessity, or achieving consensus in a democratic proceeding by having rules and following them. Up until now, the rules have been exceedingly complex, often confusing, and finally unsatisfactory at many levels. From here on in, those groups who adopt Democratic Rules of Order will find significant improvement in both the tenor of their meetings and the validity of the results. (Signed) Douglas Leiterman (former parliamentary correspondent)
Simplified rules of order are easy to understand and apply.......1998-07-20
This book is an example of how less is more. Aftering struggling with Robert's Rules of Order (700+ pages) and various synopsisses, I was over joyed to find this common sense guide to conducting meetings. In less than 34 pages it outlines and defines all the basic rules and procedures to getting things done. While book is perfect for those completely unfamiliar with parliamentrary proceedure, it helps even the more experienced by simplifying and eliminating the more esoteric rules.
The second half of the small book is filled with examples and frequently asked questions to help those getting started. The book clearly represents a labor of love by a couple with decades of practical experience and a desire to help others be more productive in a democratic organization.

Great balance of idealism and practicality.......2004-12-26
As a writer on career issues, I have read dozens of career books; this is one of the very best. Author Sydney Rice distingushes herself from the hordes of career and life coaches in the world, many of whom, as a Web search will show, sell new-age snake oil with their unproven processes and their expensive tapes, seminars, and coaching contracts. A smart, experienced executive coach, Sydney, by contrast, offers a rare blend of idealism and practicality. Through a comprehensive but not overwhelming process, she shows the reader how all of one's life experiences can and should be used to make change and to reach one's full potential. It's especially inspiring for those making change at midlife, but it's applicable to any age. For more on her approach, see Sydney Rice's Web site at www.thepaperroom.com.

Book Description
Originally developed as a teaching tool for inner-city youth, this book, now revised and expanded, can help you identify the entrepreneur within and understand what it takes to develop an idea and make it a success.
Included are dozens of cleverly written profiles of such prominent contemporary entrepreneurs as:
Debbi Fields, Bill Gates, Spike Lee, Russell Simmons, Anita Roddick, and Liz Claiborne.
Each profile is generously illustrated and goes beyond the one-dimensional success story to provide a valuable lesson on what it takes to start a business and make it a success. Also includes a "Do You Have What it Takes?" quiz to help you decide if you are a natural entrepreneur.
Customer Reviews:
A Solid Effort!.......2001-03-27
How the rich got that way is an interesting enough topic. But an interesting topic does not necessarily make an intriguing book. Author Steve Mariotti profiles 20 well-known 20th-century entrepreneurs. You will easily recognize the names Bezos, Branson, Burrell, Kroc, Roddick, Walton, Ford and Winfrey. However, the author presents little new information about them. His profiles are short; three to four pages, and take the tone of corporate press releases. The book works best as a compendium of capitalist success stories, and we [...] recommend it as a student's primer in entrepreneurial studies. Since the author shares cover credit with the charitable program he launched to help low-income teen entrepreneurs, that might be just the audience that the author had in mind.

Book Description
Honest Nutrition is an attempt to do what textbooks and hundreds of diet books do not. Nutrition textbooks do not tell you that this science is in its infancy, nor how many "scientific" claims are open to question, based on faulty research or simple hunches. If they include some of the biochemical and physiological context of nutrition, they still omit financial, social and political aspects.
After attempting to understand the prejudice against vitamins and supplements among the industrial-medical-political Big Brother (IMP-BB) and the lack of evidence for most alternatives, there is still some useful information.
Opposing philosophies are denoted as SUPR (SUrgery-PRescription orientation) and UTHR (Unconventional Therapies, Herbal Remedies.)
Honest Nutrition uses a large alphabetical section to give easy access to useful information about many diseases and nutritional therapies.
Honest Nutrition includes information about hormone resistance diseases, cryptic infections as a cause of "unknown etiology" diseases, and the effect of nutrition on behavior and criminality.
Some claims:
1. Obesity always involves hormones, sometimes with positive-feedback loops, which is why "Just eat less and exercise" seldom works. 2. A major factor in arterial disease is viscous blood, resulting in part from a lack of omega-3 fat. Cholesterol lowering does not help. 3. Some heart attacks may be due to hormonal effects, involving the hormone ouabain, and preventable with an extract of the herb strophanthus. 4. Many, or most North Americans suffer serious lack of nutrients: vitamin D, magnesium, and plant nutrients.
The author challenges the medical establishment to examine their doctrines and learn how to help people suffering from nutritional diseases. Many technical terms are included. The non-scientific reader is asked to skip over these, to gain a useful knowledge of nutrition.

Bringing Reality to the Health-Care Debate.......2007-07-10
Many who write on the subject of nutrition and health are intelligent, educated and knowledgeable. Honest Nutrition by Ira Edwards is noteworthy because the author writes as a health consumer; he does not have a health product or service to promote. To his credit, Edwards has no bias for or against conventional medicine, alternative medicine or herbal healing. He lays out the benefits, problems and costs of various nutritional, herbal and medical modalities with careful attention to biochemical realities.
Over several decades, Edwards has investigated the authenticity of many scientific studies that are commonly accepted in health and medical practice. His education and professional experience, in biochemistry and in scientific methodology, well qualify him to see through a fraudulent veneer where it exists. Among innumerable subjects, his findings on cholesterol are important to anyone interested in maintaining good health.
Although retired, Edwards has stayed current with scientific discovery. The book is abundantly filled with timely, relevant information. For me, it has been a marvelous resource, dropped into my hands at an appropriate time to help with important (and beneficial) health decisions.
Finally!.......2007-04-06
Mr Edwards cuts through the hype that passes for nutritional information these days and tells us what the various vitamins and minerals actually do in our bodies. He is honest enough to tell us, unlike most nutritional authors, that he doesn't know everything and can't give answers to everything. I especially like the alphabetically arranged descriptions of nutrients and conditions. At last I understand what those nutrients are supposed to do. Too bad I can't get this kind of honest answer from my own doctor - who seems to be locked into a "SUPR" mentality. This book ought to be required reading for every family physician and every surgeon - before he makes the first scalpel cut!
A refreshingly unbiased attempt to help the reader.......2007-03-25
I wish I had got my hands on this book 15 years ago, when I experienced a sudden decline in health and began my search for answers. It would have saved me from several regrettable decisions and given me the understanding I needed to navigate both the health care industry and the world of self-help bookdom with more discernment.
The author is quick to admit that he does not have all the answers, but what he does offer the reader is an laudable attempt to provide unbiased information for the purpose of truly being a help to the reader.
I learned a lot about the pharmaceutical companies, the FDA, the conventional medical establishment, and the nutritional supplement industry. In some areas, my suspicions were confirmed. In others, my naivity was embarrassingly exposed. I especially appreciate how the author shares the information without being out to get one group or the other.
Any book written by a physician is almost assuredly going to be pushing their own biased approach to health care. The fact that the author is not a health care provider makes it easier to trust that he is truly attempting to be unbiased. His credibility on the subject comes not from any medical degree, since he has none, but from years of study to uncover the truth in health care marketing and research claims.
Topics covered include: honesty, bad advice, sources for information, the medical establishment, economic problems, principles of nutrition (that do not involve the food pyramid), deficiencies and supplementation, mental function, and a host of diseases that plague our culture. In all topics, the effect of nutrition on body processes is explained in detail, and approaches offered by both conventional and alternative therapies are explored.
If you are looking for a quick fix to your own health challenges, then this book is not for you. But if you are looking for information that will help guide you toward improved health, I highly recommend Honest Nutrition. It will challenge both you and your health care providers to be slower to throw a band-aid solution at your health problems and quicker to search for the origin and resolution of your particular disease.

Customer Reviews:
Keep this book in publication- whatever it takes.......2003-12-22
Having spent the past two years learning everything I could about the workings of the Federal Reserve and fiat currencies I was pleased to be introduced to Ewarts excellent book on money. It is a first class book in all respects, content, format, quality of paper, photos and binding. I have three sons in their 20's and I am giving them each a copy, that is how important the information in Money is! There is a growing awareness of the abuse of our money system, our Constitution and our government. Books that would complement what you learn in Money include, Cracking the Code, Creature from Jeckyl Island, The Grunch of giants, and The Peoples History of the United States. Also do some research on filing a UCC-1 in a step to owning your freedom.
A Perfect Graduation Gift.......2001-08-22
This would be a perfect graduation gift for a high school student. Give him or her a dose of vital truth before subjecting them to economic B.S. on the university level. If only I could have read this book 20 years ago. James Ewart does a magnificent job exposing how the banking system operates and how ongoing unconstitutional expansion of the money supply waters down the value of our wallet and checkbook money. When you are the victim of a continuing con-game, the sting is not comprehended, the propaganda has been effective and the billionaires make out like bandits. Now you have the key to the magic trick in "Money" and all economics becomes very simple, only the slight of hand and propaganda was the source of confusion. So, if you are of a state of mind which could not contemplate the possibility of criminals running the United States, then this book isn't for you, stick with looser job and Sunday football and boring spouse, and ride ol' nellie down; on the otherhand, if you have been curious, or sensed something was wrong, but couldn't put your finger on it, JUST WHY SHOULD ALAN GREENSPAN BE ALLOWED TO MANIPULATE YOUR MONEY ANYWAY? DOES LIBERTY AND FREE ENTERPRIZE MEAN ANYTHING? , then this book is for you, It rates a 5 star, and every patriotic American should have a copy nearby.
The Classic work on money.......2001-03-31
Jim Ewart has produced a classic work entitled Money. More than simply a fine 'coffee table' exposition on our understanding of the nine most important monetary terms (money, currency, dollar, pay, note, bill, tender, usury, and inflation), it is THE premiere showcase work on the pictorial history of money. This expensively designed and printed book is the first to show all of the original American forms of coinage and paper currency in full color plates. They are gorgeous. Ewart walks you through all the fascinating fine print on each bill showing how government has slowly changed the fiduciary relationship between citizen and currency -- to the citizen's detriment. While I think Ewart sometimes makes too much out of the nuances of etymology (tracking the root meaning of words), when you get through his conversational explanations on money, banking and credit, you'll be an expert on the terminology of money and much better equipped to see through the deceptive fine print still in use in many of today's bank loan documents. Again, this is a showcase-quality hardback book printed on glossy paper -- a treasure house of color reproductions. It's priced none too high for the value, in my opinion.
Joel Skousen, editor World Affairs Brief
Money is misunderstood and important: Here is your answer........1999-11-01
MONEY: You shall have honest weights and measures, by James Ewart.
"Let me issue and control a nation's money and I care not who writes its laws". This quote is attributed the first great merchant banker Meyer Amschel Rothschild. We take the currency in our wallet for granted. However, the control of money is the most subtle and important of all the issues which govern human affairs. One of the results is that if foul play is planned It needs to be covered up. Most teaching at universities in economics is part of this cover up. The history of money can be found in this book. In the wonderful new the style of modern publishing this book is also user-friendly. Though you will find all the correct information between its covers it is wonderfully illustrated with photographs of money never before released. The history of coin and paper currency emerges from its pages almost live. You end up, however, with a true understanding of the horror which is central banking. The book is so attractive that every intellectual will want to have it on his coffee table for a decoration and when the time is right for a serious discussion.
Thar's Gold in Them Thar Coffeetables!.......1999-10-27
Ewart spends the first chapters of Money dissecting the 'verbicide' of the words "money," "pay," "tender," "bill," "usury," and "inflation," among others, showing how their misuse by politicians, propagandists, and the press has led to large-scale fraud, waste, and abuse the world over, for more than two millennia.
Throughout the text, Mr. Ewart traces the etymologies of these and other terms, whose meanings are corrupted in popular discourse, and shows that positions that were self-evident and considered prudent by the great majority only a few decades ago now tag their holders as fringe radicals.
Pretty heady stuff for what appears to be just another glossy, large-format coffeetable book at first glance. But, open those covers and begin to read, and you find yourself infected by Mr. Ewart's passion, indignation, and zeal.
One of the more noteworthy aspects of Money is the forty-eight pages of full-color reproductions of US paper currency and coins. Before Mr. Ewart was allowed to publish these photographs legally, he had to receive permission from the US Treasury, and was required to destroy all negatives.
Reading the notices that have been printed on paper currency in the USA over the past two centuries, and especially since creation of the Federal Reserve System, one sees clearly what Mr. Ewart finds so disturbing
1880-- This certifies that there have been deposited with the Treasurer of the U.S. at Washington, D.C., payable at his office to the bearer on demand one thousand silver dollars.
1918-- Secured by United States Certificates of Indebtedness or one-year gold notes, deposited with the Treasurer of the United States of America, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, California, will pay to the bearer on demand one dollar.
1922-- This certifies that there have been deposited in the Treasury of the United States of America fifty dollars in gold coin payable to the bearer on demand.
1928-- This note is a legal tender at its face value for all debts public and private.
The United States of America will pay to the bearer on demand two dollars.
1934-- This note is legal tender for all debts public and private, and is redeemable in lawful money at the United States Treasury, or at any Federal Reserve Bank.
1963-- This note is legal tender for all debts public and private.
Two shortcomings of Money are its focus on the USA, and the lack of an in-depth explanation in of how the Federal Reserve system creates new circulating currency. The title of the book suggests a general theme, and the issues described plague nations the world over. Comparisons and contrasts with at least England, Germany, and Japan would have been very informative.
Also, in light of the overall tone, it would have lent even more credibility to Mr. Ewart's thesis, if he had provided, among his numerous appendices, schematic balance sheets showing how new US dollars are called into existence. It is one thing for the reader to accept that the US dollar is no longer backed by value; it is another thing entirely to see illustrations showing how the US dollar is now backed by debt, which is 'minus-value'.
The message of Mr. Ewart's Money is not as radical as the tone of the text suggests. He has written an excellent introduction to the institution of money, which exposes glaring frailties that are of the utmost importance today, especially in light of recent events in the US stock and worldwide gold markets, but his diagnosis would be judged tame by most readers' grandparents and great-grandparents.
Money is a readable, well-documented, and above all non-technical volume that should be read by anyone who is interested in the nature and history of this most basic of human institutions.

In the fog of weight loss gimmicks, gadgets and fads, personal trainers are the "beacon of truth". Ask any certified trainer about weight loss and their answer will likely include the phrase, "Restrictive diets, late night infomercials, and exercise gizmos NEVER work long term." "Despite the wealth of information available, people continue to get heavier, their health continues to suffer" says Scott. It is our belief that is because, for the most part, people are being misled. "Pre-packaged, over-priced TV dinners, drugs, or constant calorie counting do not work for the majority of people. All three 'legs of the stool' must be correctly addressed: resistance training (weight-bearing exercise), cardiovascular training and nutrition. We cover these three elements in great detail and from a variety of angles so the reader understands what to do and how to do it to get results" Scott explains.
Personal fitness trainers teach people to lose weight and keep it off for life in the ONLY legitimate and proven solution that lasts long-term by increasing lean muscle tissue to accelerate metabolism. Most, if not all, traditional diets do just the opposite. By restricting calories, the body cannibalizes lean muscle and forces the metabolism into a life-preserving snail's pace. On top of that, restrictive diets leave the dieter cranky, hungry, tired and craving food.
Brad Scott of Sport and Life Fitness was chosen from over 100,000 fitness professionals worldwide to co-author the new book, The Most Complete, Practical and Honest Weight Loss, Fitness and Nutrition Guide - For REAL People Who Want REAL Results REALLY Fast! This book is the world's largest in health and fitness with over 1500 pages of instructional and motivational tips, strategies and best practices addressing every aspect of weight loss, nutrition and exercise. 147 fitness professionals with a combined 800+ years of experience and serving over 40,000 clients contributed to the book.
