        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-02-07

I bought this book because I read a recent HotJobs article by the author that was practical and to-the-point. This book gave me more of the same - relevant information and realistic guidance written in a style that was easy to follow.

This book has a workbook format that takes you through 5 stages from trying to get your job search under control to starting a new job. Each chapter had several exercises that showed you how to apply the author' suggestions to your life. I don't always read chapters in order and still found the book's format flexible enough to let me focus on the areas I wanted to improve at a given time. I particularly liked that there were lots of examples of real job-hunters' experiences throughout the book - it was reassuring somehow.

What I found most appealing about this book was information that I haven't found in my other job search books so far and an organized system for applying it to my life. I usually focus on getting my resumes out and lining up interviews. This book told me to how take a different approach and build a foundation with some basics that I had been neglecting, like boosting my self-confidence, organizing my job search days so that I was more efficient and productive, having a clear plan for achieving what I wanted from my job search, and pacing myself so that I wouldn't burn out before I got the job I wanted. I always wondered why I stressed so much over my job search and this book gave me clear explanations about what makes job hunting stressful and WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT. I was surprised to see ways I could use relaxation to improve my energy levels and confidence - who ever thinks about relaxing during a job search? Nothing fancy, just simple techniques that I could use anywhere. I tried some of the tips for what to do in an interview and they were easy enough to follow. The author takes the pressure out of trying the suggestions in the book with her philosophy that no matter what happens, you just keep picking yourself up and trying again from where you left.

My gripe about this book is that I needed more space for writing in all of the answers to the exercises - it's not an 8.5 x 11 workbook but paperback size.

5 out of 5 stars My clients found it motivating and practical.......2004-01-12

I used Kick Start Your Job Search as a resource book in one of my job search seminars and got lots of positive feedback from my clients. The common theme was "This person really understands what I'm going through." They liked that it was a realistic picture of what a job search is really like. And they found that the suggestions in the book really worked for them. The sections on talking back to critics and putting yourself first were real ego boosters and the sections on time management and peak performance got a lot of them out of the "unemployment funk" they'd fallen into. Only suggestion for change was to have more room in the book for writing in answers for the self-exploration and planning exercises -- they loved having so many exercises they could work on.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommend this book.......2003-12-11

Dr. Andrade has done it again. I lost my job in management and my self esteem and self confidence was at an all time low. After a year of not being able to find a job, I picked up this book as a last resort. It is a decision that I will never regret. After reading (and practically memorizing this book) I was able to go out on job interviews filled with confidence and amazing tips that Dr. Andrade mentioned. I am now working in an upper management position again. Thank you so much Dr. Andrade.

5 out of 5 stars A Useful, Readable (Oxymoron?) tax guide.......2000-10-20

Many people of moderate wealth can learn tax planning from this book in a simple and accessible way, from anecdotes combined with excellent brief tax explanations. Younger (30 to 40) folks can benefit the most because they have more financial years to gain from good decisions made today.

As a manager of separate individual stock market accounts, I have been interested in financial planning, but skeptical. This book really reaches me because it offers simple real life examples where I see the point and recognize client situations which can benefit from the solutions.

Dunn uses high profile individuals for many of his cases, drawing from news reports and other sources. When you hear about very good and woefully bad decisions made by folks such as Sam Walton, Warren Buffet, Jackie Kennedy and many others, the magnitude of savings from good decisions really comes home. You will see good reasons to get some competent help.

          Book Description

Are you living the life you’re meant to live?

Like Neo in The Matrix, many of us know that something is wrong. We’re haunted by the idea that there must be more to life than the status quo we see in us and around us. We wonder: Is this all there is–to work, education, marriage, sex, family, friendship, and church?

Artful and inspiring, New Way to Be Human is a book for people who know something is wrong, are tired of faking it or forgetting it, and are eager to stumble after Jesus with passion and authenticity. Charlie Peacock–one of the most innovative musical creators of our time–gives us a fresh invitation to the amazing privilege, rich relationship, and meaningful work that a life of following Jesus is meant to be.

3 out of 5 stars diamonds in the rough.......2006-08-06

I am deeply interested in what it means to follow Jesus so I was excited to find this offering by Charlie Peacock, a songwriter and artist for whom I have great respect.

I agree with so much of the content of this book, but was turned off by the rambling, dusty way he covered some of the material that's been covered to many, so many, many times before.

However, I found many of the insights and suggestions in the later chapters stunningly on-target. So, if I could recommend to you chapters 11-19 as incredibly good, and suggest you skim the first half of the book I would. This book would have benefited from some judicious editing. By only eliminating 40% of the content it would be a 5 out of 5.

          5 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled becuase he's a musician.......2005-12-23

Essentially Peacock takes core theology and presents it in a fresh, relevent way. This is a book that doesn't get caught up on all the hang ups, whether it by jargon or whatever. But that is not to say that the ideas expressed aren't thought provoking. But if you're looking for any new wisdom, you might be disappointed. I read this for an undergraduate course in Christian ministry, and basically only another guy and I thought it was great. The others were expecting some new ideas. Peacock isn't about peddling any fancy new ways of thinking. No, by "new" way to be human, it is more of the Godly sense: an old thing presented freshly, like seeing it for the first time. It ends up being both inspiring and challenging in ways that really count. We don't need new truths, we need to learn how to apply the ones we've already got.

I think this book will excite you and give you a desire to live life the way it should be. But decide for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Good Theology presented creatively.......2005-01-10

I really enjoyed this book, and apreciated his attempt to explain the Christian life in a creative way. Though not always successfull, the attempt is noble and there are many chapters that are thougroughly successful.

He spends the most time on marriage and I think does his best work with this topic. In a chapter titled Passionate Realism, he says that "Marriage is a covenant of two people agreeing to recover together, each in different ways at different paces, both under the tutelage of the Teacher Jesus." and "Marriages are little films showing the kingdom lifestyle of forgiveness". In another chapter he says that "A good marriage should be the Art of God in the world pointing to his existance, care and excellence." Inspiring words indeed.

Other good passages are found on the topics of work ("The goal of work is faithfulness to God, people and place") and creativity ("The Creator made us to be little creators with the responsibility of meaningful work and purpose in the world.")

All in all a very good read and an inspiration to follow Jesus with greater honesty and passion. Keep on writing Charlie!

5 out of 5 stars a new way through the old way.......2004-06-11

My elder sister gave me this book recently, after having just seen Charlie Peacock give a reading from "New Way to be Human." Peacock sets out his beliefs for what it means to be a Christian, and truly follow Christ, in today's world. For so long, many people have argued that art can have no role in religion. Peacock argues otherwise, saying that our words and our works are connected, and that art is essential to faith. As a long-time singer/song-writer, Peacock ought to know.

The introductory chapters to the book are slightly weighed down as Peacock seems to struggle for where to begin. "New Way to be Human" really doesn't hit its stride until Peacock takes his theories and applies them to our everyday lives, showing how our faith affects every area of our lives. He shows just how interconnected we remain to what Christ did for us. What he is saying isn't necessarily revolutionary; many within various Christian circles and communities have believed this for a long time. (One example: "Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art by Madeleine L'Engle, first published in 1980) Yet it is a message that needs to be repeated, if not shouted, in order for it to resonante with the vast majority. Perhaps Peacock's book will do the trick.

          5 out of 5 stars Seamless Living.......2004-06-08

Charlie Peacock's book is a very fresh call for diciples of Jesus to live "seamless" lives, which means that everyday living beyond the places of worship is a matter of our words and work cannot be separated. Charlie writes primarily out of his own life as a musician, performer, song writer and producer. His grasp of this call is also bibilically and theologically sound. His understanding of our culture is also a major contributing factor in the credibility of NEW WAY TO BE HUMAN.

5 out of 5 stars If you have a substance abuse problem, a must read!.......2002-09-30

The author feels that many substance abusers have an underlying emotional problem like depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder etc. They really need to be treated for this in order to get the substance abuse under control.

If you are having a substance abuse problem, read this book and be sure you get screened by a real professional for emotional problems. Keep an open mind and save yourself a lot of trouble and heartache. When the emotional issues get resolved, the substance abuse problem may practically take care of itself!

          5 out of 5 stars A great depression "primer".......2001-12-18

A great "primer" on depression. This is the first book I read on depression after reading Darkness Visible, and I still think it's one of the best, especially as the author's daughter, who suffered from depression, contributed to it.

5 out of 5 stars Real Life Explanation of Depressive Illness and it's Affects.......2000-09-26

This was the first work on depression authored with a real life perspective on the illness and its affects on "life" that I had read. Having been trained in the mental health field and being employed in a mental health related job, this was the first work to help me feel better about my own illness. It was so easy to be understanding and supportive of others with this illness, but when it came time for me to understand and to be caring for myself, it all but elluded me.

Also in this work I found the connections between depression, addiction, weight related issues, and hormonal problems. Every little piece of my spotty medical history came into focus under the hands of the author in this book. I have yet to read anything that has helped me on the road to understanding my depressive illness any more than this book. Having a lay person relate information through her own real experiences is a definate plus as well.

5 out of 5 stars This book saved my relationship.......1999-04-14

This is a very accessable book for anyone concerned about depression in a loved one or yourself. Written so people (not just professionals) can understand it. I've given it to several friends who were helped, too. Best of all, it helped my partner realize the behavior wasn't crazy but treatable. Excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars This book takes the guilt out of mental illness........1998-07-17

This book is up to date in its information. It is very informative, and reader friendly. It explains the cause of some mental illness, addictions, phobias and anxieties. These down to earth explanations take all the guilt out of having a disorder, disability, or addiction. This distancing from self blame enables action and change.

5 out of 5 stars Relevant after fifty years, important after 9/11........2002-09-14

For some reason, this visionary book has kept its relevance for over fifty years (revised early Sixties). A work of Goodman's youth, around the time he taught at Black Mountain College, Communitas is by turns common sensical, prophetic, poetic, absurdly idealistic, & frequently (deliberately) hilarious.

What was so terribly dehumanizing about American cities (the model here is New York) in the Forties has not been corrected in any major way. In the aftermath of 9/11, with that horrible, gaping hole where the Towers stood, one turns again to Communitas & reads about banning cars from New York, making the the city's avenues pedestrian & bike friendly, preserving good neighborhoods with indigenous personalities, & transforming other harsh, declining or gentrifying areas into safe, humane areas that are welcoming & which provide homes, schools & shopping areas that erase racial & class divides.

The Goodmans eagerly to take on Frank Lloyd Wright, Bucky Fuller, the international & all the other various schools of designs for living then current. They reach back to earlier American, British & European models of community that showed promise through their partial successes.

This is a deeply felt & humane call for holistic, human-sized communities within our cities. Ultimately, the solutions may not be so grandiose as some of those suggested here. But the World Trade Center Towers, awesome as they were, were coldly & absurdly beyond human scale; symbols of our subservience to a system of economics that is usually blind to basic human requirements; gigantic obstacles to the simple warmth of an afternoon's sunshine. I suspect Paul Goodman despised them.

                    Book Description

Xenophon (ca. 430 to ca. 354 BCE) was a wealthy Athenian and friend of Socrates. He left Athens in 401 and joined an expedition including ten thousand Greeks led by the Persian governor Cyrus against the Persian king. After the defeat of Cyrus, it fell to Xenophon to lead the Greeks from the gates of Babylon back to the coast through inhospitable lands. Later he wrote the famous vivid account of this 'March Up-Country' (Anabasis); but meanwhile he entered service under the Spartans against the Persian king, married happily, and joined the staff of the Spartan king, Agesilaus. But Athens was at war with Sparta in 394 and so exiled Xenophon. The Spartans gave him an estate near Elis where he lived for years writing and hunting and educating his sons. Reconciled to Sparta, Athens restored Xenophon to honour but he preferred to retire to Corinth.

Xenophon's Anabasis is a true story of remarkable adventures. Hellenica, a history of Greek affairs from 411 to 362, begins as a continuation of Thucydides' account. There are four works on Socrates (collected in Volume IV of the Loeb Xenophon edition). In Memorabilia Xenophon adds to Plato's picture of Socrates from a different viewpoint. The Apology is an interesting complement to Plato's account of Socrates' defense at his trial. Xenophon's Symposium portrays a dinner party at which Socrates speaks of love; and Oeconomicus has him giving advice on household management and married life. Cyropaedia, a historical romance on the education of Cyrus (the Elder), reflects Xenophon's ideas about rulers and government; the Loeb edition is in two volumes.

We also have his Hiero, a dialogue on government; Agesilaus, in praise of that king; Constitution of Lacedaemon (on the Spartan system); Ways and Means (on the finances of Athens); Manual for a Cavalry Commander; a good manual of Horsemanship; and a lively Hunting with Hounds. The Constitution of the Athenians, though clearly not by Xenophon, is an interesting document on politics at Athens. These eight books are collected in the last of the seven volumes of the Loeb Classical Library edition of Xenophon.
