this book isn't the best.......2006-08-30
My professor loves this book. I don't know why; makes me wonder if she ever read it the way a student would. This book makes its point early on, and the rest of the paragraphs you will read are nothing more than tedious example after tedious example. I found that I could get by without reading much more than the first few sentences of each section, stopping every so often to take note of a vocabulary word or a concept that has a better word to describe it. Even worse is I'm doubtful that I will get a single penny at buyback for this thing as McGraw-Hill decided to screw me over by publishing the 9th edition of this very tedious book. I'm betting that there won't really be any differences, save for the cover. This book is tedious at best. That's all there is to it. It tries to make communicating at work seem hard and tedious and at times it would seem it doubts the intelligence of the reader by having sappy quotes from people like Sam Walton and Donald Trump.

The material is a bit difficult to follow. There are too many examples and editorial information in the chapters, not focusing on the subject matter.

Incomplete, Superficial and Deceptive.......2006-10-28
I found this book to be a series of incomplete, inaccurate and superficial "comments" on the book of Proverbs rather than the COMMENTARY it put itself forth to be. The print is 12 to 14 point and too many of the pages have much space left for more information. A little more than a third of this big hardcover book is filled with different Bible translations of the book of Proverbs. I already have a Bible. Remove the translations and it would have been better to serve it up as a devotional booklet. I'm pretty disappointed. I want my money back.

The wisdom contained in Proverbs has always been of particularinterest to me, and through the years I've acquired a number of useful commentaries on the Book of Proverbs . And I must agree with what Cody Jones briefly touched upon in the introduction to his book - that all too many commentaries (both older and more modern ones) are entirely overly academic and rather arid in their treatments, which in most cases clearly are not intended to help the average person in the practical, day-to-day pursuit of wisdom.
I must say that I very much enjoy the format of Cody's new work, and consult it frequently on a daily basis since I've purchased it. What I've found especially useful is the six parallel translations of the Proverbs near the end of the book.
A useful reference, BUT..........2000-08-03
In view of the glowing reports by other readers, I am reluctant to say so but, frankly, I am disappointed in this work. It is a useful reference, but I find it somewhat superficial in its treatment. I have found the older, more modest "Everyman's Bible Commentary" to provide a deeper analysis, and to better tie Proverbs to other scripture.

Chart Your Own Course.......2007-03-26
I met Ron Peterson on a plane where we had a discussion about his approach to individual investing. His message really hit home with me. The radically simple idea that you should keep score of how your investments are working for you and move your money based on your own thinking was liberating for me.
I had made some money and lost some more with my investments prior to meeting Mr. Peterson. I didn't have a belief system to guide my decisions and I didn't have the confidence to trust my own thinking. With his sound principles, I have developed my own approach.
This book helped me to separate the emotional aspects of investing, which are useless but cloud your decision process, from the intuitive and analytical. Now I realize that I am my own responsible investment decision-maker and that I don't have to follow anyone's suggestions or ideas unless they are working for me. If something isn't working, I sell it and move on. I listen to what the market is telling me and respond accordingly.
If you are interested in building a foundation for yourself as an investor then this book is a good place to start. It provides you with a simple framework for evaluating yourself and your investment strategies.
Biblical Investing Rules Make Practical Sense.......2000-10-20
What a breath of fresh air in clear and concise writing in the usual investobable jargon world of investing that loses me everytime. Mr. Peterson extracts a coherent set of the foundations and implementation of good solid everyday investing -- that really work. I liked his ability to take excerpts from the Bible and explain them in bite size 'chapters' of 1-3 pages. The discussions on risk management and how to understand risk really opened my eyes to what questions I should seek for better investing instead of pursuing the goal of returns, returns, returns. All I can say is I really enjoyed it and am using it and would like to see more.

A better book than most.......1998-12-01
I've been in Japan for 4 years watching and studying Japanese management. Although you may find more famous books on the topic, this book is which I like. Had read it earlier, I would have saved much time I spent in Japanese libraries.
I'd give it 5 stars if had included more detailed explainations on the Japanese culture and history.
Worth time to read.

Simply Brilliant. The two detail-oriented authors paint an accurate picture of middle America in the 1980's. They describe the lengths Battle Creek goes to, to bring a large employer into the city. A great study that should be read by all business majors.

Mitsubishi Motors in Illinois provides in-depth analysis of the incentives offered to land Diamond-Star Motors, the plant's labor force, supplier organization, and its community impact to answer this question. The authors conclude with a benefit-cost analysis of the incentive package at the community and at the state level. Written in nontechnical language, the book is intended for planners and students of state and local economic policy. Although much research has been compiled separately on the various issues surrounding the establishment of Japanese auto manufacturing plants in the United States, this work is unique for its direct surveys of workers, suppliers, members of the community, and city and state leaders involved in the negotiations. Data on the local housing impact are drawn from detailed examination of loan applications in the community during the major hiring period at the plant. While some results confirm previous work, the authors find many differences, particularly in the composition of the labor force and the effect of just-in-time production methods on supplier location. The book provides a comprehensive view of the community and regional impact of a Japanese auto manufacturing plant which can be used as a model for planning economic development strategies to attract new firms to states and communities.
