1 out of 5 stars South Florida Job Source - Review.......2001-08-11

It is quite easy to see that this book was created with only one purpose in mind and that is to take people's money! 3/4 of the websites listed in the book are completely useless, they are either totally outdated or simply give you error messages; there are only about 50 names of people in the entire book and they mostly relate to CEO's and not HR managers; The information indicating how to prepare a job hunting campaing extends to only about 5 pages of completely general and useless information that can be found in any other job hunting book. To make the story short, do not waist your money purchasing this book, it is useless!!!

2 out of 5 stars Offers Very Limited information.......2007-05-15

Was looking for a book that would be an easy and somewhat comprehensive reference to biblical dream symbolism. Upon looking thru the book I found that (in my opinion) the information offered in this book has a very narrow and limited perspective as to the biblical symbolism in dreams. Had I not taken a dream interpretation class taught by John Paul Jackson, a respected dream interpreter of the day, I would have accepted this book as having a more comprehensive viewpoint, but it does not. Bottom line is that the information provided is very much "in the box".

4 out of 5 stars An okay Primer.......2007-01-25

I have had dreams and visions since I was a child, I also have the gift of interpretation. I would recommend this to those who have not developed this gifting or at least understand its purpose.

However, I think that if the reader wishes to develop their gift, which I believe is for all Christians (You have not because you ask not, and when you do ask you ask a miss - James); a better use of their money would be spent on John Paul Jackson's material. He has an established ministry in this area, I have gone to a seminar and found his teaching well developed and proven (the Bible says to test the spirits). Another great teacher is Pat King out of Canada, eh. I am intending to buy her materials - my good(?)friend doesn't let them out of her house :(

I am sorry that another reviewer was offended by the black man reference, it was a spiritual reference not a racial ephitaph, this is a symbolic reference not a scientifically based book. To be offended by this is to be cheated out of a deeper understanding of the types and shadows in the Bible. The Bible warns about being easily offended so please pray before reading any book that tries to expound on Bible meanings or for that matter the Bible, let the Holy Spirit reveal truth to your heart.

Throughout the Bible "dark" or black shadows represents spiritual evil. God loves all his children and he created them all, none is superior to another. Consider this, only albino's are white, people come in various shades, from beige to jet black, God looks at the heart.

I really enjoy using this book for a reference. It's easy to read and find information quickly.

4 out of 5 stars Best Reference, yet.......2007-01-16

Since I have used this book as a guide in understanding dreams that I consider significant, my understanding of what God is telling me has at least doubled. I have tried using a few other guides, but they didn't seem to reveal what felt like truth or relevance to my life. I have suggested this book to christian family and friends.

The root meaning of numbers, the different colors, the directions....I am just so thankful that this book is available.

This is indeed a great tool for God's people to understand His message, and a must-read for prophetic people.

4 out of 5 stars A Life Vest Thrown Into A Stormy Ocean.......2005-09-17

With society placing the stress it does on females being physically thin, I think the numbers this book quotes for the totals of US women with serious eating disorders is, if anything, on the low side. I along with virtually every woman I know has at one time or another had what amounts to an eating disorder and in a few cases, had them to a serious extent. With body image being as important as it is, particularly with teenage girls, I'm pessimistic that this book or anything else can do more than try to spur the one suffering from this insidious disease to WANT to do something about her affliction. I read this book because I was curious to see if things have gotten any better in the last decade as far as treatment of eating disorders goes, and also in the level of collective recognition among young women that a disorder is there in their own lives. From what I read here, I'd say the answer to both is no. On the positive side, this book did one of the better examples of addressing this life-threatening situation and if it can be gotten to the right hands, it could truthfully save some lives that might be in danger right at this very moment.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing - the authors have an in depth view of the disease.......2002-06-08

Dying to be Thin helped me in ways beyond measure. I knew that a lot of what I was doing to my body was destructive, but only after reading the book did I want to seek help to end the disease- or try to at least. A big thank you and hugs to the authors.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book. It gave me the courage to quit........1999-11-02

I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially those who suffer from anorexia or bullemia. I purchased this book at the height of my disease in 1997 and it gave me the courage to quit. The stories are real and so easy to relate to. I cried through half the book realizing how pathetic I was. I would love to someday personally thank the authors...

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and complete case studies-format; packed with info.......1998-06-29

I read this book as my daughter was hospitalized for anorexia. The fear and guilt were HUGE as I began reading (they still are) but Zimmer's and Sacker's work as an M.D. specializing in Eating Disorders has provided much-needed insight into sufferers' motivations and pain. My daughter, age 14, marked all the pages that "spoke" to her...she marked MANY pages. Authors Zimmer and Sacker attempt, and for the most part succeed, in explaining all variations of EDs. Esp poignant for me were the comments from a mother, and her powerlessness to stop her daughter from destroying herself through starvation. I bought several copies to distribute to family members so that they can support my daughter in recovery. Very useful is a section for educators on how they can assist a student who has an ED.

UNDERSTANDING THE DRUG-EXPOSED CHILD Approaches to Behavior and Learning By Ira J. Chasnoff, M.D., Amy R. Anson, Ph.D., and Kai A. Moss Iaukea, M.S.

              By Alexandra Eyle

Dr. Ira J. Chasnoff and his co-authors could easily have titled their book, "Understanding the Emotionally Challenged Child." Even though the findings in this book come from years of longitudinal study that Chasnoff and his colleagues at the National Association for Families and Addiction Research and Education (NAFARE) have done of children prenatally exposed to cocaine and other drugs, their findings can also easily apply to any child who finds life or school challenging. The authors no doubt chose the title that they did not only because it reflects the population of children they studied but also because it addresses a prejudice that drug-exposed children sometimes encounter:

"There may be a tendency by some to assume that if behavioral problems have a neurological or a biological basis," the authors write, "little can be done other than try to control them using medication or through external behavioral control. There is ample research evidence and actual experience to indicate that behavioral problems can be greatly reduced or managed successfully to the point that a child can perform well in the classroom."

Control is the key to success, the authors assert. But the reader may be surprised to learn that, the secret is not in learning how to control the child but in offering the child ways to learn how to control himself and his environment. "Our goal," the authors write, "is to help you assist children to manage themselves, rather than to ask you to control their behavior."

Although the NAFARE research indicates that while drugs like cocaine cross the placenta and directly affect the brain "at the level of the neurotransmitters, interfering with the ability to function in a predictable organized way," it also shows that both the family and school environment are major influences on how a child behaves. In cases where a child is being reared by drug- or alcohol-abusing parents, for instance, the child may be ignored or have parents who put the child down, yell at each other or push or hit to express anger. Naturally, these children are learning behaviors that will not serve them well. Similarly, a school that feels unsafe, is large and noisy, or badly organized may tax a child's coping skills. Both method and attitude are critical when working with children who have trouble coping, the authors argue. A teacher or parent invoking punitive methods, such as giving time-outs or withdrawing privileges, will only reinforce the child's sense of helplessness and thus sow the seeds for further bad behaviors. Likewise, if a teacher communicates frustration, anger, or resignation toward the child, the child will resist the teacher.

To help teachers break this cycle of negativity, the authors provide translations of behaviors. Withdrawal can mean "I'm scared," "no one likes me," "I'm sad," or I don't know how to reach out to others," while aggression may translate to, "I can't do this, it's too hard," "I'm not being treated fairly," or "I'm frustrated."

As the mother of a child who is, by all accounts, bright and well-behaved, I still found the advice in this book highly informative and useful. If I were a teacher trying to help many children, I would make this book my bible.

Study after study has shown that there are cycles of abuse and neglect that get passed on for generations. "Understanding the Drug-Exposed Child" shows us how to break this cycle. When teachers, psychiatrists, social workers and parents take the time to listen to and translate a child's anti-social behavior, the authors tell us, in almost all cases the message boils down to, "Help me, I'm overwhelmed, and I don`t know how to cope." But this is even more true of drug-exposed children.

"Drug-exposed children," the authors explain, "are...more vulnerable to the toll of emotional stressors because they have difficulty with the increased tension such stressors create. They quickly get disorganized but do not understand their loss of control and are confused and frightened by it. Such children are frequently identified as `willfully disobedient' or `behavior problems' by the teacher who, by misunderstanding the nature of the child's problem, causes increased anxiety and stress in the child. It is not uncommon for drug-exposed children to develop emotional problems as a result of being misunderstood by their teachers or parents."

The authors advocate that teachers not punish children, but show them how to control their environment. A child easily distracted from work may benefit from study carrels, teacher monitoring and intervention, listening to white noise, such as the soothing sounds of the ocean, or soft music on headphones - to block out distractions - or a quiet corner, away from busy windows or hallways.

Written primarily for teachers, this book offers concrete ways to help the child overcome the challenges presented by environment, whether he or she is living with overworked, professional parents on the verge of divorce or a poor, drug-addicted single mom, or attending a chaotic, noisy school.

As the grown-ups, it's imperative that we answer a child's cries for help, not with anger or resentment but with compassion and by offering the child real tools for successfully coping with the world. Chasnoff et al provide such tools.
