Excellent book for teaching business English to ESL students.......1998-11-16

With over 5 years of teaching experience to ESL students in Japan, this is the best business English teaching book I've found. Volume 1 starts off very basic, and implements excellent culture tips and role play. Volume 2 incorporates these features into an intermediate to advanced level.

I've read this book, and if you are someone who uses coupons, it will be a great book. I, however, live in an area with no stores that double coupons nor do I have access to newsstands selling various city newspapers to buy several Sunday papers for coupons. There's nothing wrong with having a local coupon swap box, but I nor my friends are interested in clipping EVERY coupon and swapping.
So. If you want a book that saves grocery money with coupons, go for it.
If not, I recommend Miserly Mom by Joni McCoy. She dismisses coupons in general as they are usually coupons for stuff you wouldn't buy anyway.

Here's the only money saving tip you need - stop buying books that tell you how to save money! There is nothing here that isn't already out there in various places for free on the internet or your local public library (the public library is the greatest money saving resource you have - use it!). And if you really want to make money, start writing your own book of the incredibly obvious tips and get someone to publish it.

I will be odd-man-out and admit that I am extremely disappointed with this book. I was hoping to find interesting and unique ways to save money while still practicing generosity. The information in this book, however, is nothing I can't find for free on the internet.

To make matters worse, Ms. Kay's style of writing is obnoxious and self-serving. She claims the name of Christ but, from reading her vignettes that start each chapter, she seems to be more worldly than anything. She often speaks ill of her husband and in some stories seems hell-bent on her refusal to be submissive and supportive of him. She shows no meekness of spirit or heart.

I would recommend a book like Charity and Its Fruit by Jonathan Edwards. At least until something better comes along.

A valuable read.......2004-03-26

I loved the Tightwad books, and this updated edition of Shop, Save, and Share by Ellie Kay is equally good, but written in an even more fun-to-read and witty style. I've found the book to offer great savings tips that are realistic and practical without a great deal of extra effort, because if it's going to take a lot of time to do--(at least for me)--it's not going to get done!

I recently enjoyed hearing Ellie (in a very warm and charming manner) give good advice on the Money Matters radio program, so I also got and would recommend her latest book, A Women's Guide to Family Finances.

As a mom to 2 teenage boys (and a husband who counts in the teenager category most of the time)my grocery bill is astronomical! Ellie's book is jam packed with practical, easy to implement ideas that saved me money the first week after reading it. Last night I shopped the Walgreen circular (something I would have never done before taking Ellie's advice) for toilet paper, paper towels, laundry soap, softner, toothpaste, peanuts, and my favorite lipstick that was buy one/get one free - yahoo! I saved $37 on $80's worth of items. I wish I had read her book 10 years ago. My grocery bill is down and my ability to share with others is up. It doesn't get much better than that. Thanks, Ellie for sharing with us!

Fabulous, easy read with great ideas.......2004-03-09

When you're facing financial difficulty, the last thing you should be doing is buying consumer products like books, right? Except maybe this one and one by Mary Hunt on managing money. I remember my mom cutting coupons but I never exactly studied the science of it. Ellie Kay breaks it all down for you. you get taught about ways to save money I had no idea existed. It's a quick, easy read that you can gain skills from and immediately apply. It is the kind of lesson where you can use the tools you gain slowly then apply on a larger scale after you master some steps. It is definitely worth owning, reviewing, and referring to. I actually was directed to this book by another of Ellie's books I received upon becoming engaged--The New Bride Guide. That was a surprisingly refreshing, honest, and useful book--and believe me I read dozens of them! That one was not cliche either. Anyways, definitely pick up Shop,Save,and Share. It is worth your money and time--I promise whether you plan on cutting brand buying out of your habits or not. The beauty of learning the actual science is that you can apply it to your lifestyle at a level of stringency that is comfortable for you and your family.

I am so thankful to find such a Treaure! Ellie Kay has really done a work in educating the beginner to the novice shopper on saving and sharing!
My first jaw dropping moment was when I went to Wallie World and my total was $111.09 and after my coupons my total was $46.97! WOW.... I felt like doing the running man right there at the checkout! The cashier looked at me and said, "I want to go shopping w/you!" It was a really GREAT moment! I would've saved even more money if I had went to Meijer where they double coupons up to .50. But at the time Wal-Mart was my comfort zone. Even though Wal-Mart redeems your coupons at face value, Shop, Save, and Share teaches you to use your coupons in conjunction. For example, I had 3 coupons for Huggies: two $5 OFF coupons for diapers [got these by simply calling Kimberly-Clark and telling them what I thought of their product, Ellie teaches you this too] and 1 coupon for free wipes with the purchase of 2 packages. I never thought to do this.
Another thing I incorporated from this book was to call every manufacturing company and gave them feedback on their product, I received so many coupons, coupon booklets [all at higher price value and longer expiration dates - if any], put on their mailing list and received samples - just by calling! My shopping time has been cut in half, because she also teaches you to make your grocery/shopping list in aisle order of your store. My family has also incorporated giving to local charities, neighbors, and our local church on items that I receive free w/my coupons and items that only cost me a few pennies. For example Dog treats were on sale for $2, I had a coupon for $1 that doubled to me getting them FREE! I gave them to my neighbor and it blessed them and me too!
Although, I am a much better saver now, I still refer back to the book.
Thank you Ellie so much for all the help! You've helped me save money, spend more time w/my fam - instead of in the store and to simply bless others!

I must admit I was a bit sceptical when I first purchased this book. Couponing seemed an unlikely way to save any substantial amount of money. Boy was I wrong! This book has truly impacted our finances for the better. I am a new stay at home mother and this book really does work! I cannot believe how much money we save (or how much I wasted before). It does take time and effort to really make it work, but the savings are phenomenal. I now feel like I am contributing to our family's financial well being while staying home with our child as well. Who could ask for more! I strongly recommend this book!

Shopping now has a whole new meaning!!.......2003-10-10

I highly recommend this book to anyone who does the bulk of their grocery shopping. Using many of the principles in Ellie's book I was able to purchase $91.82 worth of groceries and toiletries for only $28.73!! Many of the items purchased were not necessarily things that my family uses but because I was able to get many of them free I felt good knowing that I would be able to help our local food pantry.
And not only does this book help you save money but the stories are inspiring, and Ellie's own personal stories are hilarious.

An Inspiration.......2003-08-10

This book is AWESOME. Since I read it I've been giving "coupon seminars" from my office. My coworkers are amazed by ability to cut my grocery bill by two-thirds.

I also found a distant cousin who is stationed at an air base in Germany and plan on sending my coupons to his family soon.

Ellie Kay has inspired me to save and serve.

Murders and Inquisitions.......2000-06-13

The book is actually a farce--one of the authors is currently employed by Columbia (at least that's what I gathered from the credits), the other seems to be your typical middle-management consultant. So much for unabiased analysis. NOWHERE does any one discuss the government case against Columbia/HCA. The FBI raids are mentioned but there is no discussion whatsoever about what precipitated them, what evidence was found, and what the governments case ultimately proved to be.

One great line does stand out: "If anything can cast a pall over a leadership retreat, it's an FBI raid."

The book does point out a glaring omision in analysis of health care policy. There needs to be an indepth analysis of what went on (and is going on) with Columbia/HCA. This book, however, is not it.

Excellent historical review and analysis........1998-12-18

Lutz did a fine job encapsulating the meteoric rise and subsequent fraud investigation of the monolithic Columbia/HCA. A well balanced, ammoral perspective on the Richard Scott and Tom Frist philosophy that gives the latter '90's health care administrator a thought provoking benchmark of where the "for profit" model took us, and how it will influence our decisions tomorrow. Enjoyable read, the chapters on Lessons Learned and Implications most worthwhile.

Mergers and acquisitions, acquisitions and mergers!.......1998-12-10

If you can get through all the pages of mergers and acquisitions, the book does a very through job of explaining Columbia/HCA's corporate philosophies and what happened that led to their downfall.

The historical analysis of the FP HC industry was indeed exhaustive...The presentation of Rick Scott was very balanced...Reading it made me question why Frisk and the board didn't act sooner...Obviously they believed...if it ain't broke ($$$)..don't fix it...Good Job
