Book Description

Most companies know that long-term success does not hinge on any single product but on a continuous stream of value-rich products that target growth markets. Yet many firms inexplicably develop one product at a time, and by doing so fail to embrace commonality, compatibility, standardization, or modularization among different products and product lines. At last, in this timely book, Marc H. Meyer and Alvin P. Lehnerd provide a formula for turning products into profits, enabling companies to design technologically superior products more easily. Their solution is, in two words, PRODUCT PLATFORMS. They argue that firms must focus their energies on developing families of products simultaneously which share common components and technology.

The authors describe how the champions of product development separate themselves from less sophisticated companies by building entire families of strong products from a single "platform" of common product structures, technologies, and automated product processes. These successful companies recognize and respond to new market opportunities by integrating core skills and technology in the form of new products. In this easy-to-read and practical book, the authors masterfully elucidate this dynamic and forward-thinking strategy which enables companies to develop innovative products faster, more cheaply, and with less effort.

Drawing on in-depth case studies and personal experience with successful companies such as Hewlett-Packard, EMC, Black & Decker, and Boeing, Meyer and Lehnerd show managers how to create extraordinary products and thereby set the standard for combined value and cost leadership in their products. They argue that when a company's products are robust—highly functional, elegant in their design, reasonably priced, and a pleasure to use—the corporation will be equally robust. More importantly, The Power of Product Platforms reveals the methodology and organizational approach for designing, developing, and revitalizing strong products that enable the firm to make the transition from one generation of technology to the next. The authors also explain how well-designed product platforms can generate streams of derivative products through a continuous systematic process of renewal.

Meyer and Lehnerd apply this methodology to a broad range of industries; manufacturing in both consumer and industrial markets, software firms, and Internet information services providers.

This clear prescription for transforming the bottom line by aggressively managing product development and innovation will become required reading for large and small corporations alike, including entrepreneurs, all of whom depend on the excellence of their new products for growth.

4 out of 5 stars must read for product architect.......2004-07-13

If you are senior RD, then it's the book for you, especially in hardware system industry. I personally appreciate the section of composite design and the concept of product platform. It provide general guide to learn from competitor and way to surpass them.
Software portion is not recommended since the example it provide is not solid enough to work out the argument to apply the same concept to software. However, you may workout your ideas from original platform concept in software planning. Maybe. It remain as a question to me until now.

5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2002-09-23

This book changed how I approach product design. It focuses on designs that will succeed in the market place. It's not a book specifically on designing for a market, but how a set of systems built on a common platform will allow you to compete in multiple markets at the same time. Meyer and Lehnerd combine marketing, manufacturing, design and strategy. It's loaded with great examples from companies like Black and Decker and EMC. Also impressive is that the authors show how apply platform principles in software and service markets as well as traditional manufacturing

5 out of 5 stars Position a product line for sustained success........2002-03-06

This terrific book explains how to plan and execute a product platform which leads to a series of continuously improved products. We have used the system at our company to plan and evolve both software products and services. We have been able to spin out many different services that seem very different, but were really variations on the basic platform we had previously built. We can provide tailored solutions for clients with less than 10% of the effort that went into the initial platform development.

5 out of 5 stars A new follow up to the Power of Product Platforms coming...........2000-03-16

As the co-author of this book, using this text in teaching at 3 universities, Northeastern, Boston Univ. and U. Of Penn. in their graduate programs, I have come to realize the power of this book's teachings, its rules and tools for robust product platforms and derivative products, goods and services as well as software platforms.

We are now in the 4th edition and have published it in Spanish with a Barcelona publisher.

Companies that Marc Meyer and I consult with have found it extremely informative and useful.

Our follow up book will be an extension of this book, filled with rich examples of applications to goods, services, software and processes.

Included will be workshop materials for easy application to the users' unique products and business services.

Keep looking.......

Al Lehnerd

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, easy to read, to the point, insightful.......1999-02-11

After taking a course at Northeastern University taught by Marc Meyers I decided to read his books. He is very forward thinking and offers ideas coupled with real-world experiences. This book is a must read, right up there with The Goal. As a supply-chain consultant, I give this book to my clients to read.

    Book Description

This is a reproduction of the U.S. Department of Energy Biomass Program Multi-Year Technical Plan issued in late 2004 by the DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), encompassing the biofuels and biopower program. The introduction states:

"The Biomass Program is a comprehensive federally funded research, development, and deployment effort. It focuses on science and technology that will establish biomass as a significant source of sustainable fuels, heat, power, chemicals, and materials. Biomass is unique among all the options for renewable resources because it is the only single resource that by itself can serve as a sustainable supply of all of the following: food, fiber, heat, power, and carbon-based fuels and chemicals. The Biomass Program is managed by the Office of the Biomass Program (OBP), within the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). OBP is one of eleven offices responsible for the development of a portfolio of sustainable energy technologies. The overarching goals of the Biomass Program are to dramatically reduce or even end our dependence on foreign oil and to create a bioenergy industry in the United States. This multi-year technical plan (MYTP) documents the Biomass Program's detailed strategies, plans, and activities over the next 5 years and beyond to achieve OBP's goals. This MYTP is the first such multi-year planning document covering the entire Biomass Program. The true value of the MYTP is in the process used to develop the plan. Much of the information in the MYTP originated from a 3-day planning session in May 2003 and attended by representatives of OBP, five DOE National Laboratories, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and DOE's Golden Field Office. The disciplined thinking that went into the MYTP helped OBP identify the strengths and weaknesses of the strategies being used. The Biomass Program represents a consolidation of several previously distinct and separately managed programs. What is now known as the Biomass Program includes what had been: The Biofuels Program (BFP); The Biopower Program (BPP); Biomass-related elements from research previously sponsored by the Office of Industrial Technologies (OIT). The BFP focused on research to produce liquid transportation fuels from biomass and was dominated by research on bioethanol (ethanol made from lignocellulosic biomass) with a modest amount of work on biodiesel (fatty acid esters, a renewable fuel substitute for petroleum diesel made from natural oils.) The BPP was focused on development of biomass gasification and combustion processes, including co-firing with coal, to produce heat and power. Research sponsored by OIT focused on development of value-added chemicals and materials from biomass. Biomass feedstock development activities, including research on production, harvesting, and assessment of biomass resources for energy use, were co-funded by BFP and BBD.

The Biomass Program has five areas that fall into two categories: 1) core research and development (R&D) that emphasizes enabling technology for biorefineries and 2) integrated biorefinery development activities that pull together all the pieces of core technology for a specific commercial biorefinery scenario. As research moves from core R&D to integrated validation and demonstration of biorefinery technology, the lead in the work shifts from the public sector to the private sector. This organization of the work allows the Program to allocate its federal funding resources toward pre-commercial enabling technology development that can lay the groundwork for future commercialization without competing with or duplicating work in the private sector. The precommercial "core program R&D" falls into four main categories: Feedstock Interface core R&D; Sugar Platform core R&D; Thermochemical Platform core R&D; Products core R&D. The fifth area of work is Integrated Biorefineries, which consists of industry-led p

From the supplier: The RISC System/6000 products, POWERstations or POWERservers, from IBM are suitable for a variety of applications, from instructing undergraduates to advanced scientific research. These machines have the POWER (Performance Optimization With Enhanced RISC) architecture. There are nine models; six of these models can be tailored as technical workstations, multi-user systems, or file servers. The models are versatile, expandable, very fast, and compatible with workstations from other vendors when on a network. The models do not have a long learning curve; there is special help in every model. IBM installs the systems, and software may be preloaded. The 550 model is the top of the line in the POWERstation line; it exceeds the performance of some supercomputers. The POWERserver 930 and 950 are designed to serve an academic department or research lab.

There are pages to record insurance information. We each have a daily routine but does anyone else know our routine? There is a place to record you routine.

Part two contains legal and financial information. There are certain pages that should be kept confidential. Those pages should be removed from the book or copied before filling them out and copies kept in a secure location.

"This is an all-in-one-source of personal, medical, religious, legal and financial information that can save you time and money and maybe your life."

"The Senior Organizer" by Debby S. Bitticks, Lynn Benson, and Dorothy K. Breininger is a must for everyone, not just seniors. I think filling out this is the most important thing you can do for a loved one. I was impressed that the authors even included a section for the names, address and phone numbers of friends. I intend to use this book and to purchase at least three more - one for my husband and one for each of my parents. I highly recommend this book to everyone; you never know when the need for this information may arise.

As our population ages it has created a whole new market for items related to care of the elderly. The Senior Organizer was written for just this target audience- the elderly and the family members who care for them.

At first glance The Senior Organizer seems too basic for publication. It appears to be a book of fill in the blank forms. And, on closer examination, that is what the book really contains. But the beauty of the book, and what makes it a great investment, is its absolute comprehensiveness.. The authors have thought of every possible aspect of life that need tobe tracked, organized and maintained. The sections are personal,/medical and legal/financial. They include everything from forms to fill out on all medicines, eye glasses and doctors to where in a house the emergency shut off items are. It is impossible to think any information that is not covered. If a family takes the time to thouroughly fill out each form, they will be ready for any situation. Ideally, every family should have a copy of this book and its forms completed in case of an emergency. While it was created for the elderly it is a great organizational tool for every adult, regardless of age.

The Senior Organizer can be ordered as a bound paperback or as a set of 3 binders. but, by using the access code listed in the book, readers can download and reproduce as many copies of the forms as needed. That is definately a huge bonus for this publication. The download requires personal information but site assures it will not misuse the data given.

                  Book Description

This book marks the retirement of Donald Harris as Director of the Socio-Legal Studies Institute, Oxford University. Dr Harris was at the forefront of the move in legal scholarship from traditional black-letter approaches to one supplemented by a socio-legal perspective, making use of the insights of the social sciences. His success can be seen in this unique volume of original essays by some of the most distinguished scholars in this field, all of whom have connections with the Centre. The essays range from an economic analysis of the law, the behaviour of lawyers in the business world, the property and financial consequences of divorce, to current tensions between judges and politicians. All are fused by their achievement in providing a succinct summary of the current state of research while making a considered assessment of future directions.
