Entertaining & Useful but, in some parts, slow........2003-08-28
This book is an excellent tool for any person interested in corporate communications. It lines out the basics and even gives entertaining examples of everything the authors (Argenti and Forman) explain.
This book is also very useful for any person whose job has something to do with corporate communications because of the many examples given; For example, in chapter 3, it explains the communication strategy used by Jack Welch during the years he spent as CEO of GE.
Chapter 2 was a little boring because it gives a general overview of the history of PR emphasizing on the professional lives of Ivy Ledbetter Lee and Edward L. Bernays whom some say were the fathers of PR.
On the other hand, chapter 10 (Managing Communications in a Crisis) is most entertaining because it mentions what a communication crisis is, how to create and implement a strategy; Along with this general explanation it also mentions certain examples like the Johnson & Johnson Tylenol Recall, Merril Lynch, etc.
Either for those in the business or in the business, this book is a reliable tool to learning the basics of corporate communication.

Informative Fast Read For Busy Professionals.......2003-01-07
Let's face it, the people who most need the information in this book are probably too busy putting out communications fires to sit down with most of the tomes that are available on the subject. Argenti and Forman have written an informative, accessible and most importantly, action oriented text that covers the entire communications function. In particular, the Crisis Communication section is strong and details what steps to take when an organization needs to communicate quickly. If you are a busy professional struggling with communications -- this is the book for you.

Check Point NG aims to teach its readers how to install and set up VPN-1/FireWall-1 Next Generation, the latest version of the highly respected firewall software from Check Point. Its authors--all with significant network and security certifications--accomplish their objective: it seems likely that this book will travel with a lot of Check Point consultants and stand ready on the shelves of many organizations' network security specialists. The book has plenty of unadorned how-to procedures that get straight to the point, and enough background information to help you make good designs and troubleshoot problems. The Syngress style, which incorporates a carefully considered list of questions and answers at the end of each chapter, suits this subject well. It's easy to locate sections of interest or to scan straight through and accumulate knowledge.
Your security requirements are unique, of course, but the authors do a good job of explaining how to satisfy common requirements and implement variations upon them. For example, they show how to configure Network Address Translation (NAT) in a general way, then--in a Q&A section--show how to combine sequentially numbered networks into a single network object for easy administration of rules. it is obsolete. i wasted $150.00 on the CCSA, this book doesn't cover smart defense and is too basic for a firewall admin.

I'm in charge of several firewall-1 (NG). Because of this I got 5 books on this matter. Well, believe me, is like as I only had just one. This one !
In fact all the needed information is not only thoughtfully covered but besides it is well and coherently explained and correlated with the surrounding issues.
If you add up the information scattered in the other books, you'll find the same information contained in this book, only in a lot more hard to handle, diffuse and even contradictory. Firewall-1?. . . with the only help of this book you are done.

This book is a wealth of information. I bought it specifically for the chapter on installing Check Point VPN-1/FireWall-1 on Solaris. It was excellent. In addition, the chapters on the graphical interface and the security policy are comprehensive and very well written. Great coverage of NAT, OPSEC, and SAM. If you are using CheckPoint, pick it up.
Great resource, good review for exam.......2003-04-07
My boss bought a copy for our department and I can't tell you how many times its been referred to for information in the last month or two. There is great coverage of everything: VPN-1/FireWall-1 installation on Windows, Solaris, and Nokia. Also coverage of SecureUpdate, security polcies, NAT, authentication, content filtering, VPNs. The advanced configuration chapter could have been beefier, but that's my only criticism of the book.

Great book- excellent book on Next Generation. I have a couple of Check Point books on my shelf- this one is the one I find myself referring to time and time again... If you're looking for good books on this same sort of stuff, pick up the Nokia book by the same publisher- I just got my copy yesterday and so far it's excellent. These two books are a must have for any person working with Check Point products...

The content seems to be OK. But for a software book that is touted to be a visual presentation I was very disappointed with the lack of color in the book. The most color I saw was on the front cover. Very dull. If I had a choice to do it over I would pick a different publication and author.

Easy to follow guide to get started with OS X Tiger. Many screen shots and easy to follow steps will maker Tiger easy to pick up, even if you haven't used a Mac before. Easy enough even for your mother to learn a new OS.

Drew lost millions when finally ruined by being a short seller. Vanderbilt, the great bull of his day, and Drew's financial rival, worked on building companies and stocks and died a wealthy man. This is a good book, originally published in 1910, for new and old Wall Streeters who want to read about the stock market game when there were no regulatory authorities and anything could be accomplished.

Crazy Life Story.......2006-07-31
This was a very interesting book right from the begining. Going through the life of Daniel Drew from a youth all the way to his 82nd year. He was an uneducated man who made it big. His life as a cattle drover and how he "watered the stock" are all in here. Numerous funny stories that will have the reader laughing out loud. From cattle to steamships to railroads his life was very diverse. It includes some details of his religous life which I would call his views questionable considering all the stories of how he lied to everyone about his business transactions even fellow church members. But it was not surprising considering he told how he had made a promise to donate $250,000 to start Drew Theological Seminary and then never could part with all of the money. Interesting enough is that the seminary is still around and very active.
He did business with some of the biggest names of the time, Astor, Gould, Fisk, Vanderbilt. He details how Gould and Fisk became his partners as stock traders. There are stories of revenge and the ups and downs of his wall street career. Also some insightful wisdom of how the market works from an insiders perspective. It was a funny story and sad at the same time but one that I believe most will enjoy.

Here is the colorful story, told largely in his own salty language, of his early life as a cattle drover - his discovery of the profit to be gained from "watered" cattle which he later used in watering the stock in the famed Erie Railroad operation - his building of a fortune in Wall Street - his epic struggles with Commodore Vanderbilt and his unholy alliances with Gould, Fisk and Tweed.
The BOOK OF DANIEL DREW has been out of print and virtually unobtainable for many years. It is a real classic of the stock market - a fascinating view of an era in American history and a period when anything went in the stock market - and, above all, an irresistible story of a country boy who grew up with this country and became one of its legendary figures.
A good book. Almost as good as Lefevre's work........1998-11-22
This is where the expression "watered stock" comes from. The book is written from Drew's point of view - looking back over his life from age 80. Unlike Edwin Lefevre's characters, this guy is an unscrupulous arrogant !@#$%&. However, he is a !@#$%& with religion! A couple of annoying things: he writes the way uneducated people talk, rather than in correct English (eg "speckilation"); he uses quite objectional words to refer to dark skinned people (as was perhaps the custom in the 1850's or 1860's). Goes hand-in-hand with the work of Edwin Lefevre (Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, Wall Street Stories, The Golden Flood, The Plunderers, Sampson Rock of Wall Street) if you want a picture of the of the financial world of 100 years ago.
An amusing "autobiography" of a Wall Street schemer.......1997-08-16
"The Book of Daniel Drew" is an amusing portrait of "Uncle Dan" Drew, founder of Drew University and well-known nineteenth-century Wall Street schemer.Written from Drew's point of view, the book describes his progress from a circus hand and cattle drover to his rivalry with Commodore Cornelieus Vanderbilt and alliance with Jim Fiskand Jay Gould - a partership made infamous by the attempt to corner the gold market in the mid-1800s.
The book contains interesting tidbits of life in New York City when people still celebrated Evacuation Day, John Jacob Astor's brother worked as a butcher and Madison Square was covered by a pond! The book also explains the bovine origin of "watered stock."
Drew's various schemes, plots and religious inclinations are treated with an ironic humor that quickly reveals him as a sly hypocrite.
Bouck White claimed his book was based on a secret diary discovered after Drew's death. This claim has nver been verified and Drew's family threatened to sue for libel!
Bouck White was a character in his own right. He was a Harvard-educated minster turned political agitator in pre-WWI New York. In later life, he built a "home-made" castle near Albany, New York. He made pottery and talked philosophy with curious vistors. He died in 1951.
