The idea of stress contributing to poor health is an old one, but often patients are simply told to "relax"--and it's even rarer that researchers take the time to carefully study how relaxation can improve physical conditions. Tackling both these issues, Dr. Richard Surwit combines specific relaxation techniques with a solid research background in an effort to help control blood sugar levels. The first few chapters are rather technical but are explained in an approachable manner. He identifies several chemicals such as cortisol and growth hormone that are related to blood sugar management and discusses how depression, hostility, and anxiety can affect these chemicals. He refers to specific research, both with mice and with humans, and includes simple tests to help you analyze these problems and develop a combination of techniques to combat them. Later chapters explain these techniques in detail, particularly progressive relaxation therapy (similar to biofeedback, but without the machine) and cognitive behavior therapy. Each routine is broken down into simple daily steps, and pages can be used as workbook sheets --much of the daily effort involved is simply tracking your progress. While nowhere does Dr. Surwit suggest these as a total replacement for diet control and insulin treatments, the specific steps aren't difficult to add to your daily routine and may make just the difference you've been hoping for. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

Diabetes is quickly becoming one of the world’s most serious health epidemics, and researchers are continually searching for new ways to manage the condition beyond the traditional realms of diet, exercise, and medication. Now, Dr. Richard S. Surwit, a leader in the field of the psychology of diabetes, adds the vital fourth component to treating diabetes: a revolutionary mind-body program that lowers blood sugar levels and dramatically reduces diabetes’ serious and damaging side effects.

In The Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution, Dr. Surwit reveals how stress, depression, and anger affect blood sugar levels and offers a step-by-step six-week program—based on twenty years of study—to help the millions of people with diabetes effectively manage their condition. He clearly explains how our moods and emotions can translate into chronic anger, anxiety, and depression—all of which increase blood sugar levels. He provides compelling case studies and a powerfully effective six-week program designed to teach patients how to manage emotions and stress, as well as self-tests and reflective quizzes to help patients determine the best and easiest psychological techniques to help keep blood sugar levels down. By bringing the powers of mind and body together, this is a powerful—and unprecedented—tool for effective diabetes control.

After reading this book, I got a small book to keep track of my moods and my blood sugar, then started developing ways to avoid stress and strong emotions (the bad ones, that is). It is a cure-all, but it does help, which is all I can ask of any program. It has also put me in a much better mood. You don't have to be a diabetic to appreciate this book.

    Book Description

"I believe that this book will come to be regarded as a historical landmark in the way in which we think about and deal with 'stress'. While the analysis presented here is perhaps preliminary and one can argue with some of the conclusions, this book makes a unique contribution by challenging the complacent orthodoxy which characterizes so much of the stress literature. This challenge is not just part of an academic debate, but also has profound implications for what organizations and individuals do about 'stress'. I feel therefore that this book will be of genuine value to practitioners and researchers." --The Occupational Psychologist "At long last, we have a book which examines stress from this perspective and which aims to "present a critical understanding of the experience of stress and distress in employment" and to "use this analysis to explore broader debates relating to discourse, agency and subjectivity". I believe that this book will come to be regarded as a landmark in the way in which we think about and deal with "stress"." --The Occupational Psychology "The book under review makes a concerted effort to explain the genesis and growth of interest in stress and also to provide direction in managing new sources of stress.... Lucidly presenting and critically reviewing several models of stress, the book suggests clearly that most contemporary theories emphasise individual efforts and coping strategies in dealing with stress. The authors highlight the role of collectivity, particularly in organisational settings, in managing stress.... Evaluating current approaches to stress management and providing alternatives, this book is an excellent addition to existing literature. It attempts to excite researchers and academics in the fields of organisational psychology to re-examine the existing theories and practices.... Undoubtedly, the book is a welcome addition to the shelves of students and academics in the field." --Management Review Providing a thought-provoking and timely alternative to the current approaches to stress at work, Managing Stress addresses stress within the wider debates about emotion, subjectivity, and power in organizations--as an emotional product of the social and political features of work and organizational life. The authors first analyze the historical developments of the dominant "stress discourse" in modern psychology and elsewhere. Alternative possibilities for understanding stress at work are then presented, drawing on a range of perspectives from labor process theory to the work of Foucault. Next, they outline a powerful critique of the typical stress management intervention: Employees increase their effectiveness by becoming "stress-fit" for dealing with their work pressures. Finally, the authors explore various ways of "rewriting" stress at work, including recognition that stressful work experiences can be collectively produced and reproduced. Managing Stress will be essential reading for all those interested in this important topic within occupational and organizational psychology, social work, organizational behavior, and, more generally, within management and organization studies.

    Book Description

The complete guide for anyone who faces sudden change at work, in technology, and in the world around them

In Changing Directions Without Losing Your Way, the authors who helped pioneer the "working from home" revolution identify the six stages of change in business and in life. For each of these stages, Paul and Sarah Edwards demonstrate how to understand and assess change for what it is, and then recast career aspects to adapt to new realities.

From facing a new reality, releasing the past, and finding an inner compass, to embracing the future, developing a strategy, to putting the show on the road, the six stages of change are clearly explained.

About 30 years ago I read Alvin Toffler's FUTURE SHOCK wherein he described the rapidity of change and impact it would have on society and the individual in the coming decades. I have since observed in my personal and professional lives much of that dispossessing "shock" where the future meets the present. I could well have remained immobilized in the wake of recent life path switcheroos but for the wholly manageable techniques laid out in Paul and Sarah Edwards CHANGING DIRECTIONS. Clearly they have done their homework and have fashioned a plan of action that anyone can commence and complete, regardless of how stranded one may feel or uncertain the road may look. The book's life lessons allow individuals to reset the compass, fuel the engine, align the steering, inflate the tires and provide some fresh views of roads taken or not taken. Last year's WHO MOVED MY CHEESE provided a nice little fable and easy read for time-strapped rat-racers. But it might leave many feeling a bit undernourished in the how-to department. Paul and Sarah Edwards have set the table nicely with a six-course feast ("to go") of work and life-changing wisdom. Just desserts await those who faithfully follow their recommended menus.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the read..........2001-05-19

I found the book to be extremely helpful in identifying what it is you wish to change in your life, eliminating the fear and psychological blocks which stand in the way, and manifesting the dreams you've always had...yet often forgot were still locked inside, waiting to be fulfilled. The authors have written in a way which is immediately accessible, entertaining, and easily digested. There is a gentle urging which draws you closer to those "fantasies" many of us let go of, only to replace with a half-life of others' belief systems that ultimately have not led to our fulfillment. "Changing Directions" gets you in touch with what you may have forgotten or forever released as "inappropriate" or "irresponsible choices"...and challenges you to once again embrace them as perhaps the only appropriate, responsible choice you can make if you are ever to achieve happiness.

From the author: This study conceptualizes emotional labor (namely, the display of emotions during service interactions) in terms of frequency, duration, and emotional dissonance. To identify important antecedents and consequences of emotional labor, data were collected via survey questionnaires (N = 562). Results indicate that task routineness, power of role recipients, and job autonomy are the most significant antecedents of emotional labor, while emotional dissonance is the component of emotional labor which accounts for the most variance in the consequences of emotional labor. Implications for future research on emotional labor and the management of emotions within organizations are discussed as well.

          Book Description

In the 1980s and early 1990s, a substantial number of U.S. companies announced major restructuring and downsizing. But we don't know exactly what changes in the U.S. and global economy triggered this phenomenon. Little research has been done on the underlying causes of downsizing. Did companies actually reduce the size of their workforces, or did they simply change the composition of their workforces by firing some kinds of workers and hiring others? Downsizing in America, one of the most comprehensive analyses of the subject to date, confronts all these questions, exploring three main issues: the extent to which firms actually downsized, the factors that triggered changes in firm size, and the consequences of downsizing.

The authors show that much of the conventional wisdom regarding the spate of downsizing in the 1980s and 1990s is inaccurate. Nearly half of the large firms that announced major layoffs subsequently increased their workforce by more than 10 percent within 2 or 3 years. The only arena in which downsizing predominated appears to be the manufacturing sector—less than 20 percent of the U.S. workforce.

Downsizing in America offers a range of compelling hypotheses to account for the adoption of downsizing as an accepted business practice. In the short run, many companies experiencing difficulties due to decreased sales, cash flow problems, or declining securities prices reduced their workforces temporarily, expanding them again when business conditions improved. The most significant trigger leading to long-term downsizing was the rapid change in technology. Companies rid themselves of their least skilled workers and subsequently hired employees who were better prepared to work with new technology, which in some sectors reduced the size of firm at which production is most efficient.

Baumol, Blinder, and Wolff also reveal what they call the dirty little secret of downsizing: it is profitable in part because it holds down wages. Downsizing in America shows that reducing employee rolls increased profits, since downsizing firms spent less money on wages relative to output, but it did not increase productivity. Nor did unions impede downsizing. The authors show that unionized industries were actually more likely to downsize in order to eliminate expensive union labor. In sum, downsizing transferred income from labor to capital—from workers to owners.

Downsizing in America combines an investigation of the underlying realities and causes of workforce reduction with an insightful analysis of the consequent shift in the balance of power between management and labor, to provide us with a deeper understanding of one of the major economic shifts of recent times—one with far-reaching implications for all American workers.

5 out of 5 stars Corporate downsizing: public perception versus reality.......2004-02-22

Headlines in the last decade of the twentieth century contained a steady drumbeat of corporate downsizing announcements. Now three professors of economics have used money from the Russell Sage Foundation to examine the record to see what actually happened to American firms during those stressful years. They wanted to know whether public perceptions matched reality.

The limited funds placed significant constraints on the resources available to the researchers. The value of their work depends heavily on their skill and judgement in using publicly available statistics and discrete private data bases to reveal more than at first sight evident. The result is a model of econometric technique.

The first conclusion is that newspaper media tended to favor the dramatic figures from large, well-known manufacturers. Manufacturing in America has been in long-term decline since 1967 and manufacturers have steadily shed jobs. So far, perception matches reality. However, agriculture and manufacturing only provide employment for 15% of the population, so this segment is not a good proxy for the entire economy.

What happened in the Service Sector that employed the other 85% of the population? Unfortunately, we can only see gross trends, because the government doesn't collect steady, detailed statistics on this segment. The researchers were forced to use some indirect techniques to tease out meaning from what was available.

"Downsizing", it turns out, is corporate-speak for upsizing. Firms laid off one set of workers - disproportionately less-educated, older, female or parents of young children - and hired on another set, by implication younger, male and single. Was the resulting workforce more productive? No, there was no change in employee productivity. Moreover, non-managerial employees bore the brunt of the layoffs, so that claims to be ridding the company of "fat" actually increased the management-to-staff ratio.

Did investors reward companies for their action? Perception says that downsizing is followed by an increase in the stock price. The reality is that stock prices remain steady or decline after downsizing announcements.

So what were the benefits of downsizing? The authors come to a surprising, but authoritative conclusion. Downsizing announcements force down staff wages so that the firm retains more profit. Simple really, isn't it?

"Downsizing in America" contains numerous graphs, tables, and economic formulae. Professors Baumol, Blinder and Wolff have spent the Sage Foundation funds wisely to "foster the development and dissemination of knowledge about the economy's political, social, and economic problems."

                Book Description

Few people have had a greater impact on the lives of Canadians than the late Supreme Court judge Justice Emmett Hall. At the forefront of several important judgements in the 1960s and 70s - such as Truscott and Calder - Hall is perhaps best known for his role in the adoption of universal health care at the federal level in 1968. Based on extensive interviews with Hall and people who knew him, Frederick Vaughan's Aggressive in Pursuit tells Hall's remarkable story.

Born in Quebec in 1898 and raised in Saskatchewan, Hall had a long and distinguished career as a lawyer. In 1957, former law school classmate Prime Minister John Diefenbaker appointed Hall to the Saskatchewan Court of Queen's Bench, and four years later to the office of Chief Justice of Saskatchewan. In 1963, Diefenbaker elevated Hall to the Supreme Court of Canada, where he took up the task of universal health care and showed himself to be an aggressive defender of native causes.

Aggressive in Pursuit traces Hall's career from his earliest days of private practice in Saskatchewan to the end of his career, and death, in 1994. It shows how one prairie lawyer made a difference in the life of Canada.

5 out of 5 stars The TRUE Story of Early Farming on the Plains.......2000-05-24

This is probably one of the most enlightening books about farming on the Plains that I have read. Farmer DeLoach kept a daily diary of his thoughts about the weather, crop prices, World War I and it's affect on life on the Plains, and other "routine" occurances. Editor Neugebauer has enhanced the content by explaining and documenting the historical events that DeLoach wrote about. For example, when farmers were shipping grain overseas during WWI, he feared starvation for people in the U.S. if the Germans kept sinking the grain shipments, yet DeLoach said no one could talk about it because of the sedition acts that had been passed. Editor Neugebauer explains the sedition acts and farmer DeLoach's fears. In another example, DeLoach mentioned that the President of the U.S. had appealed to cotton gins to shut down in an attempt to drive the price of cotton up. The attempt failed because too much of the bumper crop had already been harvested, Neugebauer explained. I found the editor's notes to be very helpful and the pen and ink illustrations to be outstanding. This book *shows* the kind of effort and persistence early farming on the Plains required.
