The study that saw it all first........2005-07-11
How ironic it is to go back to this book written in 1997 and see the entire dynamic of outsourcing and globalization analyzed before it became evident to the rest of us. Even today, however, it is not obsolete because they not only predicted the events but also demonstrated why globalization would have this consequence. They also provide a critical analysis of reengineering which demonstrated the technique as little more that an excuse for downsizing jobs and wages. Even now this book is a must read on globalization.
Excellent. Even More Relevant in 2004.......2004-10-06
I've read just about everything there is to read in main stream economics. Although I've poured over the works of Hayek, Keynes, Marx, Smith, Ricardo, etc... this book touched me like no other.
The plain language of the mechanics of the devaluation of labor was sobering. Althought written in 1997, its message is even more relevant today. People working harder for less, buying into the free market myth, but living the reality.
The fact is capital moves much faster than most people can adapt. Forcing people to periodically start over again as jobs are lost. Such negative competition is assisting the small minority of anonymous large investors, but in the process also hollowing out the middle class. Forcing people to work several jobs, or incur debt simply to maintain their economic status. At some point the middle class will reach its limit and its decline will effect both the market and politics.
I highly recommend this book. It's insightful, well written, and thought provoking.
A powerful shift.......2004-05-08
I agree with the main statement of the authors that today those who earn their living from work are coming out losers: shrinking wage growth, problematic pension and healthcare insurance coverage, decline in health and safety protection.
Keynes' ultimate nightmare has arrived: industrial capitalism has been replaced by financial capitalism.
This is reflected in corporate as well as governmental policies.
To hide actual tendencies corporate America has invented newspeak: displacement for firing or re-engineering for big lay-offs.
The workers are not only laid off, but even their Social Security System is privatized, offering huge management fees to financial institutions.
The policies of the Fed are purely financial, because bankers as creditors don't want te be paid back by inflated notes. It secures also an environment of high real intrest rates. But when the financial sector gets in trouble, it asks the government (all the tax payers) to step in, e.g. the bailout of the savings and loan industry.
The authors castigate rightly supply-side economics as a policy of lowering tax rates for the rich and at the same time as a money-raising vehicle for the GOP.
They show clearly that small businesses are not the cornerstone of job creation.
The position of the US work force is also beleaguered by powerful trends in world capitalism with the rise of India and China and their cheap labour force.
The authors prescribe sensible measures to reverse the trend: public investment (infrastructure), improved education and research and development.
But I don't believe that these measures can stop the immensely powerful shift that is taken place from the US/European markets to Asia. Ultimately, the economic world centre will be replaced by a new one, probably China.
A very revealing and necessary book. Not to be missed.
Missing the point.......2000-04-11
The authors have got their premise correct, but in my opinion miss the point in their conclusion. Many of the chapters (especially the one on Bangalore) do not really come to grips with the point of the argument. The title is about the triumph of "Capital" and the betrayal of "Work", a tantalizing title and a true statement in this age. They failed to expand their argument and prove their point.
Very involving and with sound logic to support conclusions.......1999-02-23
This book takes economics out of abstract textbook equations and applies it to government, culture, etc. The book makes good use of statistics, for things like concentration of wealth among different income levels and the average wage increases through the years of all kinds of education levels. It is explained why cultural differences can make one country more competitive in one area than another, and other ways in which culture impacts economics and vice versa. For example, Indians are credited with drawing corporations with their close family ties:there's usually someone to watch over the kids while Mommy or Daddy takes another shift, and there's no day-care expenses or parents taking time off to be with a sick child. Finally,it's not too technical and it's a whole lot more interesting than some economic material I've digested.

Where a professional kitchen succeesds or fails..........2006-03-13
Remove the mystery from restaurant operations and understand how a professional kitchen succeeds and where it fails with THE FOOD SERVICE MANAGER'S GUIDE TO CREATIVE COST CUTTING, a guide to simple ways to save a food service operation from bleeding money. Thousands of practical insider techniques and tips come from successful professional operations around the world and cover all the basics. It's a tiny percentage which makes the difference between a profitable establishment and one out of business: it's good to have a practical step-by-step guide to reducing costs in food, beverage, operations and labor alike. A 'must' for any serious professional restaurant or cookbook collection.
Big Book with a ton of tips..........2006-01-27
I am not an accountant. Just thinking about the bookkeeping associated with profit planning and cost cutting intimidates me. The Food Service Manager's Guide To Cost directed me to accounting software and tools such as Tasty Profits and the National Restaurant Association's Chart of Accounts to keep my books in order. I thought Point of Sale systems were items of convenience and style. The book showed me that POS systems monitor inventory, staff performance and schedules, and even reports possible theft. Tricks of the Trade, testimonials from established restaurateurs, give a wealth of insight. The book reveals thousands of cost cutting secrets such as using a celebrated chef to design your menu, but not actually cook it. There are also must-see tips for decreasing profit-loss of theft and an inefficient staff. The book is humongous and every page of it is filled with applicable tips to improve your bottom line without sacrificing quality.

Customer Reviews:
Insightful.......2006-08-06
In the current highly competitive operating environment, companies are often required to cut costs whilst maintaining an acceptable level of service and quality. This calls for smart ways to cut costs. This book provides some guidance to achieve this.
With the various economic shocks that the world is subjected to, one typical target for cost cutting is reducing the workforce. This short-sighted approach to cost cutting not only causes a lot of human suffering but seldom achieves the intended objective of reducing costs in the long-run. David Young proposes a creative approach that focuses on uncovering hidden costs and reducing or eliminating them. The techniques to overcome the 21 common cost-reduction prohibitors appear to be workable and can be overcome. David Young gives some practical examples that enhance understanding of the cost cutting concepts that the author is proposing.
I found the book to be terrific and it helped me in my on-going cost-cutting efforts making them more creative and innovative. It enabled me uncover areas that costs were hidden, helping me to realise substantial cost savings.
The book is required reading for all managers tasked with the responsibility to cut costs and build profits in any department.
Run a lean mean operation.......2006-05-08
Anyone who is well-versed in running a business will know what his or her costs are and where those costs can be reduced if need be. This is a wonderful book that lists 181 ways to reduce operating costs. People who are planning to start a business might not know where wasteful costs can be cut, and they will greatly benefit from reading this book.
I have a feeling this book was written for owners and managers of existing businesses with costs already in place that need to be cut. I read this book as an entrepreneur about ready to start a business and what I learned from it was ways to strategize operations so spending is NEVER wasteful.
Great book, and a must read for any entrepreneur who wants to build a great company.
This is going mean not lean..........2004-02-03
Unfortunately not what I was expecting from the book - These are acceptable ideas, not really new, just packaged all together - You won't get on a lean journey and revamp your business with this book...probably good for a smaller enterprise...Still, since the price is low, it doesn't hurt flipping the pages and give a 3 stars...
YGBK Defined.......2003-10-08
Young obviously was teasing us with the YGBK acronym -- daring us to read on and figure it out. Later in the book, in one of his YGBK descriptions, he ends it with the statement "you gotta be kidding."
YGBK... What is that?.......2003-09-13
The book is eduactional in the sense that the ideas mentioned are all valid points and easily comprehensible. The one fault this book has starts in the first chapter when it states "Make sure you avoid these YGBK's". My question to you is what is that. I have thoroughly looked for the meaning of this acronym and have come up empty. If anyone could provide some light please do.

Book Description
Comparativism is no longer a purely academic exercise but has increasingly become an urgent necessity for industrial relations and legal practitioners due to the globalisation of the economy, the massive introduction of new information technology, the growth of multinational enterprises and the impact of international and regional organizations aspiring to harmonize rules. The growing need for comprehensive, up-to-date and readily available information on labour law and industrial relations in different countries led to the publication of the International Encyclopaedia for Labour Law and Industrial Relations, in which almost 70 international and national monographs have been published thus far. This book, Comparative Labour Law and Industrial Relations in Industrialized Market Economies, goes a step further than the Encyclopaedia inasmuch as most of the chapters provide comparative and integrated thematic treatment. Our aim is to describe the salient characteristics and trends in labour law and industrial relations in the contemporary world. Encouraged by the warm reception of the first six editions, we hope that also the seventh edition will serve as a textbook and reference work to facilitate the task of teachers and students of comparative labour law and industrial relations. We hope, too, that the book will provide labour lawyers, HRM and industrial relations specialists with the necessary insights to cope with a world which is increasingly international.

ABC of Poultry Raising.......2005-08-05
I am very happy with the service I have received. It was shipped to me in Australia and arrived in excellent condition.
Very Informative.......2004-08-05
I am animal control officer and needed a good book about poultry as a reference. The ABC of Poultry Raising is excellent. It covered all the basic husbandry aspects but, was not too detailed.
Great for novice or old timers.......2002-12-15
We have raised laying hens since the early 80's and have read and owned many a book on chickens, and this one is one of the best. It deals with everything from how to get started, equipment needs, controlling disease and managing ones flock. From egg stage and broody hens (those who sit on the nest and hatch eggs) to feed and water issues and housing and breeds. It is an all around fact book that I think any beginner chicken person should read. And I even learned some new things from the book as well.
ABC of Poultry Raising.......2001-10-09
The book is good for the beginers and also for reviewed by the amature poultry keepers.
Great Reference Material.......2001-08-27
A great book to use as a reference for the new poultry fancier. This book is a little outdated, but the basic principles are accurately discussed and presented in an easy to read formate. It is a good read and should be in any poultry fanciers library.

A+ for Usborne.......2001-12-26
My husband and I love the books by Stephen Cartwright. The Alphabet book uses alliteration of each letter and each letter gets it's own page. Example- for letter A - "All the animals are asleep on the Apple Tree Farm. Can you find two apples?" - Besides the hidden apples to look for, there are a number of different farm animals in beautiful color for recognization skills and counting. Each page also has a hidden duck which runs through many of the Stephen Cartwright books. Great book, perfect gift for toddlers just learning animals, or older children learning their ABCs.
Great Cute book.......2000-05-22
This book really draws a child into the world of learning letters! The illustrations are fun and amusing.

One of the BEST .......2005-10-11
My son still throws lines at me from this book from time to time! He is now 12 and remembers it well. We read it daily (sometimes more than once) for about 2 years between his ages of 3 and 5 and now, when we do the annual bookshelf cleaning, he still insists on leaving that one on the shelf! No, he doesn't pick it up to read anymore (boo hoo...they all have to grow up), but boy, on that bookshelf-clean-out-day, he likes to remember! Also, when someone brings a child to our home, its one of the first he chooses to read to him/her! This book is beautifully illustrated, reminds us of our hometown (Lancaster PA) and has a GREAT alphabet learning rhythym with this prose! I reccomend this book to parents with toddlers and to early readers!
An understnading of the Dutch with use of the alphabet........1999-09-12
I used the book with my students and they really enjoyed it. They learned about the Pennsylvania Dutch and their life style along with the alphabet. A new word, "row", was introduced and lead to a wonderful dictionary lesson.
A pleasant alphabetical trip through farm country........1999-07-16
Better than the usual A-Z teaching tool in that it's a well-written piece of prose--how surprising. Lovely illustrations with an Amish theme. Will please adults as well as the young.
