5 out of 5 stars The Best Banjo Book Ever!.......2007-10-07

If you really want to learn to play the banjo, this is far and away the best book out there. Patrick Costello is a superb instructor -- entertaining and thorough in his teaching. It doesn't get better than this! You will learn to play the banjo!

5 out of 5 stars The best way to start playing the banjo.......2007-09-21

I first found out about this book from Patrick Costello's YouTube video instructions, which match up well with this book. When I got the book in my hands, I was very excited. It matched exactly what I wanted to learn, and how. It starts you with the basic frailing strum (bum-ditty), and quickly has you playing a song to get the feel for the rhythm of this style of playing. There are plenty of songs to keep you busy for quite awhile, and Patrick's storys in the "Tao" portion of the book will have you smiling.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-02-25

I am a fledgling (at best) banjo player. I have read and researched many books, articles, and websites pertaining to banjos. This is an excellent book. I wish I had found this one first. I may not have purchased some of the others(?).

5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2006-02-01

Being a beginner myself, I have found this book very helpful in trying to understand some of the basics of banjo playing.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to learn to be a banjoist & a musician.......2004-12-28

Pat's How and the Tao of Old Time banjo is one of the best basic instruction books of any kind that I have ever seen. I don't just mean banjo, but any kind of music, and I am sure people writing other instruction books can learn from this too.

Too many banjo books center on the author showing off his own virtuosity and presenting a course that really isn't helpful to a beginner. This book IS oriented at getting a beginner going playing the banjo, learning how to do everything practically. You will be playing tunes quickly, but more importantly you will be learning basics about the banjo that will take you further places.

All along, Pat has very good and basic tips about banjo playing that often are not in banjo books that can save a beginner who cannot afford a teacher much trouble.

What impresses me is that this book teaches basic concepts of music to the new player without going into things an old time banjoist doesn't need to know. Pat's concept of a player is someone who is really getting to learn more broadly about music itself than what a particular instrument can do. This is a good approach, but I have never seen it done as practically as in this book.

My only quibble is Pat's obession with doing everything in the G tuning. One is taught to play in other keys by making chords and positions from the G tuning, something that I've never heard of before in an instruction book, although I confess I have done this playing in bands when my knowledge of the banjo was scant and inaccurate.

Old time banjo is played in a multiplicty of tunings. Indeed, the adjustment of the tuning is really key to this approach to music unlike the tenor banjo, plectrum banjo, bluegrass banjo, or guitar. Even a beginner who hopes to play old time music should learn the double c tuning, the D tuning, and the sawmill tuning.

Despite this one drawback, this is a great instruction book. The thinking is clear and easy to understand. The book addresses practical problems a beginner will face in clear and easy and instructive language, there is a good selection of real old time songs here that are worth the price of the book.

This is a good book to use, but once you get picking look around for information about other tunings

American Management Association official E. Thomas Behr is both a long-time business consultant and admirer of the timeless Tao Te Ching. In The Tao of Sales: The Easy Way to Sell in Tough Times, he combines the two and demonstrates how the classic Chinese philosophy can be used to build effective contemporary business relationships. His exercises and activities aren't for everyone, but neither were Lao-Tzu's 81 simple ideas when first introduced some 14 centuries ago.

another variation on the same old theme, has this man ever spoken to a customer?

5 out of 5 stars "Lets the customers speak". Easy!.......1999-09-28

Last April 99 my wife and me were walking down the "Paseo de Gracia" in Barcelona (Spain), in a very important fair of books "Sant Jordi". When we stopped in one of the small shops on the street, we watched the titles and I were attracted by one of them "The TAO of Sales". I bought it, and when I started to read I couldn't stop. During days I were speaking about the book with my colleges in the office and my close family. I started to use some techniques with our customers. "Lets the customers speak". Easy! but difficult to do it. I found on this book a new way of relationship with our custumeres. Thank you very much at Mr. Behr, for this incredible work.

5 out of 5 stars How to make money in sales and keep your integrity........1999-01-13

A friend of mine called me to say I must read this book. He had been selling cosmetic products and not doing well. This book showed him how to stop pushing products/services or manipulating customers and how to start meeting people's needs with integrity and authenticity. The book aligns itself with the old wisdom of Taoism in a light, easy to understand way, but it is completely modern by a man who has trained many salespeople. I recommend it to anyone who has to sell their products or services to customers (or to their manager and others within a company)... specially if you want to sell better while enjoying your work in sales and get to know your customers as people, not "targets" or "market segments".

5 out of 5 stars Tao of Sales transforms the context and behavior of sales.......1998-03-13

The Tao of Sales makes the compelling point that new sales behavior, based upon Taoist principles, creates a dramatic change in the sales person and his or her customer relationships. Taoist principles applied to sales, transform the way the sales person thinks about the sales process and the way they are behaving in the sales process.

For example, most traditional methods for handling objections actually increase customer resistance, because they are aggressive and customers become threatened. The Tao of Sales, on the other hand, describes specific techniques which enable the sales person to listen deeply and most importantly, to observe without judgment. These techniques are not found in traditional sales instruction, and yet, the behaviors are fundamental to building sustainable relationships of all types, customer, personal and professional. They remove the struggle from the interpersonal process.

The Tao of Sales successfully translates the wisdom of a philosophy of living into a series of hands-on techniques ready to apply immediately in the customer relationship! The information is chunked so that the reader is not overwhelmed and can practice a manageable number of techniques at one time. The book mirrors what the Tao says, The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing it all together.......1998-01-25

As a student of Zen and Taoism for many years (in my earlier days), it was refreshing to come back and view the principles put forth on Dr. Behr's book; especially through the lens of selling. As an entrepreneur, I must express the high value his words carry for me, from both a management and selling standpoint. The truths spoken here are universal truths: which provide great clarity and enable the selling and management process to move forward; with purpose, direction and without fear. Kudos for a very fine book! I shall refer to it often as my company grows!

      Book Description

David Herbert Lawrence was born in Eastwood, England, in 1885. In 1914, he married Frieda Von Richtofen, a German national and distant cousin of the German war ace, "The Red Baron" von Richthofen. While living on the Coast of Cornwall in 1917, they were harassed and accused of being spies for Germany.

By 1921, the Lawrences were living in Italy and D. H. had won international acclaim for his writings. Mabel Dodge Sterne invited the pair to her home in Taos, New Mexico. Traveling by way of Ceylon, Australia, Tahiti, and, finally, San Francisco, the Lawrences set foot in New Mexico for the first time in 1922. Although he traveled all over the world, Lawrence was never as happy anywhere as he was in Taos.

Arthur Bachrach has lived in Taos for over twenty years, and he has come to know people who freely recalled the Lawrences. They shared information about the circle of artists and friends who surrounded the Lawrences and their lifestyles. Bachrach provides information on Lawrence's writings and the influence living in the mountains of New Mexico had upon him.

      D. H. Lawrence died of tuberculosis while visiting France in 1930, and five years later, his ashes were placed in a memorial on his beloved Kiowa Ranch near Taos. Given to the University of New Mexico in the 1950s by D. H.'s widow, the ranch is known today as the D. H. Lawrence Ranch.

Recollections of Lawrence's life and friends in 1920s Taos.

4 out of 5 stars A good book about Taoism and Chinese ART!!.......1999-10-07

The title of this book is misleading; it is not a philosophy book but rather primarily an art book. However, it is a nice book for someone interested in how Taoist thought influenced Chinese art. There is a short, thirty page, introduction which is actually quite good and informative. It's brief account of Taoist inner alchemy (yoga) was well-done. There are many nice color pictures of Chinese art with commentary to show and explain how Taoist thought was expressed and took form in Chinese art. I would highly recommend this book for someone who is familiar with Taoist thought and wishes to explore it from another angle.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong . . . but time and chance happenethto them all. Ecclesiastes 9:11With these words, the epitaph Padre Martnez chose for himself, the reader is drawn into a stirring and provocative biography recounted by a master storyteller.Fray Angelico Chavez, articulate and well-versed in New Mexicana, vividly records the life of the controversial Padre of Taos so that the reader gains full measure of his surroundings and o the times.Martnez was continually at the forefront of the public and political forums . . . a master of jurisprudence and canon law . . . a champion of the underdog. With the advent of Bishop Lamy, public attention became focused on these two dynamic personalities. Their philosophic differences ultimately led to Martnez suspension and excommunication.Chavez was a curious and indefatigable researcher and he used these talents well while delving into the facts and legends surrounding Padre Martinez most poignant and colorful life-drama . . . a personality to be reckoned with, whether as hero or villain, or both.Readers will, at once, share with Chavez his absorption in this man and, also wonder . . . how such a phenomenon could have sprouted and bloomed under the most adverse circumstances of time and place.

              Description:
Statistical moments have been widely used for detection and diagnosis of rolling element bearing damage. Among them, Kurtosis and Honarvar third moment S"r are the major parameters. In this paper a new statistical moment, from the viewpoint of Renyi entropy, is derived, which is shown to be as effective as kurtosis and S"r. Comprehensive comparisons of kurtosis, S"r and this moment are performed, and the results from simulations and experiments show the new moment has a better overall performance than kurtosis and S"r. On the one hand, this moment behaves much like kurtosis but is less susceptible to spurious vibrations, which is considered to be one of the main shortcomings of higher statistical moments including kurtosis. On the other hand, from the viewpoint of sensitivity to incipient faults, which is the major drawback of lower statistical moments including S"r, the new moment is superior to S"r. Moreover, the sensitivity of this new moment to changes of bearing speed and load is also less than kurtosis and is close to that of S"r.

This invaluable new resource shows you how to plan for—and meet—the financial challenges of parenting. Included are helpful tips and advice, as well as useful worksheets and practical strategies.

"How Can I Ever Afford Children? is a must read for every parent. This is the most comprehensive guide to financial planning for raising children I have seen. Barbara Hetzer has created an invaluable, practical guide to planning for children from conception through college graduation." —Ellen Rogin, CPA, CFP President, Strategic Financial Designs Inc.

"Barbara has put together an excellent summary of the financial costs a parent needs to know (and are probably too afraid to ask about). I hope to make it required reading for all of my clients with children." —Douglas Mollin, CFP President, ProPlan Financial Services.

1 out of 5 stars little writer on the prairie.......2001-02-18

Bruce Bair's characters rise no higher off the page than the print. Everyone he writes about, including himself, is less than 1/2 dimensional. Bair only manages a rare page or two of interesting writing as he describes some of the more grueling farm tasks, but these few pages are lost in the consistent undercurrent of rancor which evoked in the this reader a sad sense of embarrassment for the author and his unfortunate family.

Growing up on a working farm and being expected to work long hard hours at thankless and repetive tasks is typical of many family businesses, especially in that time and place. And the same can be said of growing up under a strap wielding dysfunctional parent in that time and place. But if Bair thinks he should stop what he is doing to write a book about such an untypical life I ask that he at least go a writerly step further by giving us one or two characters with whom we can identify or care for.

I had this book several years before I actually bothered to read it, and once I opened it up, I couldn't put it down. It was absolutely marvelous. I, too, am a farm boy who later became a journalist. While some of the choices he made were different than the ones I made, and many of the circumstances were different, I could really relate to this story. Actually, after reading this, it made me think that I ought to get off my buns and try to write a book.

                        5 out of 5 stars Kirkus Schmirkus!.......2000-07-05

First things first. You'll simply have to disregard the Kirkus review of this book, because it's wide of the mark by several country miles. "Good Land" is not a book listing the grievances of a son against against a domineering father or that son's miserable childhood. It's about a family making the best of what they have to work with and facing the daily reality that working together under trying circumstances doesn't often bring about blissful harmony. It's a well-told, familiar tale to those who have lived it, and it is these people who will appreciate the honest look at the art of wrestling with the land and weather to make a living. It's as if the Kirkus reviewer holds the belief that farm families live an idyllic existence far from the cares of the city. Well, that has never been so, and never will be. Speaking from experience, I know that the working relationships of farming fathers and sons can be volatile. I also know that there is no fiercer love on earth.

Though I've never met Bruce Bair, I know him in the way all Kansas farm people know each other, whether they've stayed on or strayed from the farm. This book speaks to me like nothing else I've read lately. Since my father watched the births of three daughters and a stillborn son before he got his farmer, my sisters and I were proudly pressed into service. So I, too, have witnessed the wrench-throwing, stomping-mad tempers of a man pressed to the wall by ripening wheat, milo waiting to be planted, broken-down machinery, and cattle needing to be tended to. I know the eerie hypnotism of hour after hour alone on a tractor in the middle of a vast expanse of land, with only dust devils for company. The longing for an afternoon at the "pee-filled paradise" of the nearest public swimming pool, as the author so aptly puts it. The unspoken hierarchy of farmers -- the hardest workers, the hardest drinkers, the shrewdest land-grabbers. This book is the reality of farming life; good and bad, and yes, downright nasty sometimes. But what the reader ultimately comes away with is awareness of the abiding tie between farmers and the land and each other.

                        5 out of 5 stars Kirkus Antithetical.......1999-12-18

Just to set the record straight, Bruce was not maligning either me or the way we met in any way in this book. Nor was he maligning his father, his family or anyone else. This is reality, folks. This is what it's like out here on the Great American Desert. This is what the term "hard life" means, not that it's a life without hope or love or beauty. This book is a tribute to the landscape of the plains and the way one farmer coped with that landscape and made it support him and three generations of his family. Bruce has heard from dozens of High Plains farmers who attest to the truth in his book. This is shared experience. I find it pathetic that the Kirkus reviewer has no respect for the audience this book appeals to. I'm sorry, you fancy-schmancy Back East high-falutin' prissy literary yahoos--but I'd give my eye-teeth to see you digging irrigation trenches in 112 degree heat sometime. Get real.
