Imagine a wedding-planning book written by a guy--a '90s guy, a funny guy, a guy who's been through it all himself. Michael Perry points out (repeatedly) that what you need to be married is each other and a few bucks for a marriage license; the rest is gravy, even though to some it's pretty important gravy. From families to jewelry to making decisions together, Perry manages to dispense both wicked wit and good advice for those who, in spite of everything, really want to take that plunge. Perry on budget cutting: "Suddenly, the $8-a-bottle champagne looks just as good as the $80-a-bottle champagne. And do we really need a lion tamer and Yo-Yo Ma at the reception?" As a bonus, it's illustrated hilariously with stock photos from a previous era. For couples with a sense of humor, there's no better engagement gift than The Couple's Wedding Survival Manual.

Book Description

Saying "yes" was the easy part -- now comes the first big challenge for every engaged couple (no, not who's in charge of the remote control). Planning your wedding together can be as much fun as the big day -- if you know how to negotiate your wishes and keep your sense of humor. Michael Perry, a happily married former groom, offers hip, helpful advice for navigating the land of weird wedding stuff you never knew existed, and gives you the best gift of all: the attitude to enjoy yourself and each other in the premarital months ahead -- and for a lifetime afterward!

Do you want a royal wedding or a backyard barbecue? A stay-at-home honeymoon or a Hawaiian getaway? Only the bride-and-groom-to-be can decide; The Couple's Wedding Survival Manual shows you how to:

  • Discuss guest lists and seating charts without breaking up
  • Deal with her mother, his Uncle Fred, and anyone with a two-bit opinion

5 out of 5 stars Keeps things in perspective.......2001-10-18

I will be married in six months, and I was getting tired of looking at all of the wedding books available that dealt with the nitty gritty of planning, picking out flowers, sites, photographers, etc. This book is wonderfully refreshing to read, as it reminds the reader not to become too bogged down with the 'show' of a wedding and remember why a couple should get married in the first place. The delightfully sarcastic humor is just what a harried bride and groom need.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended - Funny and Helpful.......2000-11-04

I really liked this book. In fact, I read it twice because it was so fun to read. And most wedding books are not particularly fun, either. The Wedding Survival Guide was great for keeping perspective and a sense of humor at a time when things are getting a bit overwhelming and it has a lot of extremely helpful information - which I actually read and retained because the book was so engaging. The photos and their captions are especially amusing, too.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have book for all Engaged Couples!.......1999-02-17

This book tells everything you need to know in an easy to read, hilarious format. Unlike other wedding books that tend to take themselves too seriously, this book gets the pertinent information across in a manner that makes you WANT to read it.

My fiance particularly liked the section on ring buying.

Perry keeps the focus on WHY you are getting married, to be together forever. He downplays the keeping up with the Jones which is so prevelant in marriages these days. However, if you want to go all out, he'll tell you who, traditionally, pays for what!

    A must have book!

      Book Description

Corporations spend millions of dollars to protect themselves from sex discrimination lawsuits. Now here's the book that will protect you!

In 1993, CNN correspondent Patti Paniccia was one of 30 million American women who suffered sex discrimination on the job. After the birth of her second child, Paniccia was told by her male bureau chief, "You're not fired, you're just being replaced." Her replacement? A man whose childless state would allow him to work any time, any day--including holidays. (Never mind that Paniccia had worked most weekends and holidays for four years, and was prepared to continue doing so.) Paniccia, a lawyer, sued CNN for sex discrimination. Her case, which made national headlines, was settled after more than two years of court hearings, appeals, and depositions.

When Paniccia was fired, she could find no comprehensive guide that outlined her rights and options in the face of sex discrimination. This indispensable resource is the result of her extensive research--an authoritative, clearly written book for employees, supervisors, or anyone wishing to understand what constitutes sex discrimination and the legal steps to take when the offense has been committed. Inside you'll discover vital information, including

      - Your job search: what questions you cannot be asked, and what words and phrases to watch out for on a job application.
      - How what you say during your performance reviews can be used against you.
      - How to avoid the four biggest mistakes women make in discrimination battles.
      - Getting fired--invaluable facts about exit interviews, separation agreements, and future job references.
      - How and where to lodge a discrimination complaint.
      - Basic rules to follow during a dispute.
      - What to expect if you sue.
      - How to interview an attorney: ten questions you should ask.

Protect yourself and your job by knowing your rights.

4 out of 5 stars I badly needed this book!.......2002-03-28

Paniccia did a great service for any woman that may be thinking of filing a sexual discrimination suit. Especially, if they already have filed suit and have a lawyer who is not forthcoming about what to expect.

There were some areas of interest that I personally have that Paniccia did not cover, but overall this is a worthy read if you're contemplating a lawsuit. It will prepare you in many ways and this type of preparation is necessary in order to survive a lawsuit of this nature. No one but a woman who has endured sexual discrimination or retaliation could understand.

Whereas Paniccia's case was outright and obvious with her "mommydom" memo, there are many women, I believe, who are constantly enduring discrimination only in more oblique/obtuse ways that can easily be covered over or explained away. This is especially true in today's society where I do not think the court system is favorable to the individual. Finding a lawyer who is truly dedicated to your cause and remembers that it's your case and you lived it is very important to succeeding. These types of lawyers are few and far betweeen. What with case loads so high, and the push by firms to take clients that can make big settlements, these cases often don't get the attention they deserve.

Maybe if they made the settlements higher, more lawyers would be inclined to take the cases and then maybe there would be less tolerance in the workplace for this type of behavior. Right now, it's still a good 'ol boy system and as long as it is, they'll make and break the rules as they please!

      5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource.......2000-09-28

I read a review of Work Smarts for Women while I was living through a nightmare sexual harassment situation. I anxiously awaited the book release. I bought it as soon as it was available. If I had access to this book prior to reporting the situation according to organizational policy I would have known that following organizational policy is contrary to my best interest.

Everyone has to decide what course of action is best for themselves. Read this book before you try to work with organizational management. It will help you decide what course of action is best for you and how to go about achieving your goals.

      5 out of 5 stars Be Prepared!.......2000-03-28

My wife and I purchased "Work Smarts" because she was the victim of the subtle discriminatory practices in place at her job.

We found the book to be a well written and informative guide. Especially useful to us were the sections on collecting proper documentation, and lodging a formal complaint.

Recommended to any woman who wants to be proactive and protect herself from sexual discrimination before things get out of hand.

5 out of 5 stars Paniccia Sets Precedence.......2000-03-16

As women worldwide continue to struggle with double-standards and undesirable work conditions, Patti Paniccia's insightful book offers a way out. The most (only?)comprehensive guide to redefining what is fair, Paniccia's book deals with the myriad of issues surrounding hers, and other cases with an elegance normally lacking in the "How-To" genre and should not be pigeon-holed as such.

Why should women ipso facto put up with inferior gender biasing? Paniccia's personal account with sex discrimination infuses the book with fire and solution.

Passing on a baton of freedom from injustice is Paniccia's true gift. Her children will reap the benefits of her undisputable strength.

      5 out of 5 stars great resource!.......2000-03-16

work smarts for women is a great resource for employers and all working women in the united states. it is well written and simple to read. it offers a complete explanation of our complicated discrimination laws and the process developed by those laws. real life stories of women who suffered discrimination are used to show how the laws and processes work. paniccia's hard work should be appreciated by both employees and human resource departments.

The Reuters Financial Series allow almost every person with a simple knowledge of economy and mathematics to understand the stock market. It contains a lot of informaton and practical examples and the graphical look allow us an easy understanding of the topics. The only problem is the exercises and the examples are based on the "Reuters Markets" program, so if you dont't have it the book becomes a little useless.

              Description:
This paper proposes and tests a new hypothesis concerning the price impact of option introductions on the underlying asset. We argue that the leverage properties of options induce a higher level of informed trading in the aggregate market (underlying plus derivative), resulting in excess listing-day price movements in the newly optioned equity. Using an alternative dataset, our results suggest that this may be an explanation for the observed positive than negative excess listing-day returns of US optioned stocks over the past thirty years.

                      Book Description

Newspapers as a record of the day's events and conduit for public business have been part of life in the United States for several hundred years. While some newspapers claim the "newspaper of record" characteristics for themselves, others are so designated to serve specific community functions, such as the town chronicler or public notice distributor. The expression "newspaper of record" is most often found among works by lawyers, historians, and librarians. Yet many newspapers are now developing online news products that do not correspond directly to the newsprint version. Many are asking whether online newspapers will replace traditional newsprint products and whether the online version can or should be treated as equal to the newsprint version. State and municipal governments are exploring electronic distribution of public notices, challenging newspapers' exclusive claim to legal notice advertising revenue. Martin and Hansen focus on some of the traditional uses of newspapers by groups who use the "newspaper of record" concept, and they compare traditional newspapers to online newspapers as "records." After a historical review, they examine legal and archival uses for newspapers, report on several case studies of online newspaper production, and conclude with suggestions for future scholarly, legal, and industry focus on the "newspaper of record" concept. This valuable analysis serves professionals in journalism and law as well as scholars and researchers in journalism and archive management.

From the supplier: The 'Record,' a small newspaper located in Hackensack, NJ, had a long history of journalistic integrity when Malcom Borg took over as publisher from his father and grandfather. Borg launched a significant expansion during the 1980s, and the newspaper's profits and reputation continued to improve. However, the recession that followed the 1980s has financially burdened Borg's expanding media empire. Furthermore, editorial changes in the late 1980s drastically changed the style of the paper from a hard investigative piece to a light, graphic oriented tabloid.

                            Book Description

In the time since the second edition of The ACS Style Guide was published, the rapid growth of electronic communication has dramatically changed the scientific, technical, and medical (STM) publication world. This dynamic mode of dissemination is enabling scientists, engineers, and medical practitioners all over the world to obtain and transmit information quickly and easily. An essential constant in this changing environment is the requirement that information remain accurate, clear, unambiguous, and ethically sound. This extensive revision of The ACS Style Guide thoroughly examines electronic tools now available to assist STM writers in preparing manuscripts and communicating with publishers. Valuable updates include discussions of markup languages, citation of electronic sources, online submission of manuscripts, and preparation of figures, tables, and structures. In keeping current with the changing environment, this edition also contains references to many resources on the internet. With this wealth of new information, The ACS Style Guide's Third Edition continues its long tradition of providing invaluable insight on ethics in scientific communication, the editorial process, copyright, conventions in chemistry, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and writing style for any STM author, reviewer, or editor. The Third Edition is the definitive source for all information needed to write, review, submit, and edit scholarly and scientific manuscripts.

                            5 out of 5 stars don't know what I'd do without it!.......2007-03-08

I'm a science copyeditor, and I truly don't know how I'd manage without this book. If it has to do with chemistry, it's here (thank heaven!). And there's a wealth of clear information about how to format math, a wonderful list of unit abbreviations, and even a fair amount about physics- and biology-related terminology. It has the most lucid and concise explanations I've seen about when to apply italics or roman. And it's reasonably priced. Of course, if you specifically need to follow ACS style, this book is de rigeur, but even if you don't, you'll find it invaluable for science copyediting.

With so many software products to its credit, Microsoft can't help but have an opinion on computer terms and usage. Many topnotch technical companies, writers, and editors consider the Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications to be a standard in the industry. Technical writers and editors often refer to it when they can't find an answer in The Chicago Manual of Style or when researching appropriate style issues to include in their company's in-house style manual.

While this manual of style can't possibly list everything that is created by Microsoft, it does advise how to use and spell both general and computer-related terms and takes a stand on sticky style, technical writing, and design and interface issues. This second edition has been updated to include significant changes in Internet terminology and usage. Alphabetically tabbed pages make it easy to locate topics of interest. A useful appendix defines acronyms and abbreviations and shares any special style rules associated with them. Another appendix lists keyboard characters and the correct names that should be used to describe each one. The enclosed CD-ROM contains an electronic version of the book along with a copy of the Microsoft Press Computer Dictionary. --Cristina Vaamonde

Like most of Microsoft products, it's not great, but it's ok. Some of their standards are pretty out of date.

We're using this one at work to help us write doc standards. It's invaluable! Thanks to Microsoft for recognizing that the term is "Web site" and that there is no such word as "website." Hooray!!

                            3 out of 5 stars Serves a Specific Purpose.......2006-12-17

Honestly...I have been a technical writer for over 20 years and only recently even looked at this book. Granted, I found that how I learned to write was right on target. However, I think following this book to the letter is not a good idea. This book should be nothing more than a high-level reference for any "wannabe" tech writer. Technical writing is far more than proper capitalization (internet vs. Internet) or how you refer to something (dialog vs. dialog box). It's about your target audience, the message you're trying to convey, and the benefit to the end user. This book does not cover that: that comes from real world experience, training, and mentoring. I've seen too many people use this as their "bible" for technical writing when it shouldn't be.

As long as you keep in mind that this book will not teach you to be technical writer - only help bring continuity to your work allowing it to fall in line with others - then buy it.

I was pleasantly surprised and pleased at how soon I received my book. I received it in 2 days from the time I placed my order. I have never received an item so fast from any other place that I have purchased anything from. Thank you so much for being so prompt as this is used in my place of business.

Rare is the style guide that a person--even a word person--would want to read cover to cover. But The Economist Style Guide, designed, as the book says, to promote good writing, is so witty and rigorous as to be irresistible. The book consists of three parts. The first is the Economist's style book, which acts as a position paper of sorts in favor of clear, concise, correct usage. The big no-noes listed in the book's introduction are: "Do not be stuffy.... Do not be hectoring or arrogant.... Do not be too pleased with yourself.... Do not be too chatty.... Do not be too didactic.... [And] do not be sloppy." Before even getting to the letter B, we are reminded that aggravate "means make worse, not irritate or annoy"; that an alibi "is the proven fact of being elsewhere, not a false explanation"; and that anarchy "means the complete absence of law or government. It may be harmonious or chaotic."

Part 2 of the book describes many of the spelling, grammar, and usage differences between British and American English. While many Briticisms are familiar to most Americans and vice versa, there are some words--such as homely, bomb, and table--that take on quite different meanings altogether when they cross the Atlantic. And part 3 offers a handy reference to such information as common business abbreviations, accountancy ratios, the Beaufort Scale, commodity-trade classifications, currencies, laws, measures, and stock-market indices. The U.S. reader should be aware (but not scared off by the fact) that some of the style issues addressed are specifically British. --Jane Steinberg

4 out of 5 stars The Economist Style Guide: 9th Edition.......2007-07-23

I thought there were a few inconsistencies in the manual, but I still highly recommend this concise reference book to anyone who does any writing, editing, or translating into English.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than this........2007-05-15

I speak English as a second language. This style guide has been incredibly useful and informative. I have improved my writing even in other languages thanks to this book. It even is pleasurable reading.

                            In the Guide's own style:

5 out of 5 stars Review of brazilian girl.......2007-02-06

Very useful handbook for writing. It is fashioned similarly to other journalism guides of Brazilian newspapers, but it is far more witty.
It brings a section about differences between American and British English - with clues I couldn't find anywhere else. Lots of vocabulary, as usual.

It could bring more examples of good and bad practices, though. But I guess those you can find at live on the pages of The Economist itself.

                            Enjoy your reading,

                            Ruli.

More than grammar. This book helps with style and it also has reference information on abbreviations, calendars, countries, currencies, science, geology, internet, latin, proofreading, stockmarket, world times, etc. It has many interesting sections.

5 out of 5 stars Style guidance at its best.......2003-07-15

Simple. Straightforward. Writing instruction as you would expect from perhaps the best magazine on the planet. Clear, concise, to the point. If you want to write well, then buy this book.
