It's a very intuitive book that don't explore very much on mathematics but gives a very good idea about how are things in portfolio management. I recommend it for undergraduates and for portfolio management first approach students.

5 out of 5 stars One to add to your reading list.......2007-06-30

I know many have this book and have never read it. Others read this book but never really understand it. However, if you can read it and understand it, it can offer a powerful tool for how to allocate capital. It actually is the basis for most indexing and quantitative methodologies. When applied to fundemental approaches to investment it can be quite powerful.

Sadly, though not enough money managers embrace what this book is trying to say with regards to risk and return.

5 out of 5 stars Practical approach and mathematically rigorous at the same time.......2006-02-01

Excellent book for whom is looking for a practical approach that at the same time is presented through a rigorous mathematical methodology. The book is absolutely superior over the academic textbooks that usually limit themselves to CAPM and efficient market theory. Grinold and Kahn go much forward and at the same time had managed to clearly and meticulously show the CAPM model, its limitations and the more sophisticated tools developed from it. Beside of showing the active way of managing a portfolio, the serious mathematical presentations through which the different theories such as CAPM are described are very convincing of how difficult it could be to beat the market.

1 out of 5 stars Theoretical framework with no practical examples........2005-01-20

There is important information in this book but most of us need to see numerical examples to reinforce theoretical concepts. This book really comes up short in this area. It provides some discussion with the formulas/equations it presents but is very incomplete in terms of worked out examples. Yes, including worked out examples might might mean a book three times as long, but the book would then be many, many times more useful to practitioners.

As it currently stands the book can only benefit the super-genius-theoretical types who do not need to see examples to understand OR someone who ALREADY really understands the concepts.

The book rather frequently presents variables or constants without explicitly defining them for the reader (it assumes we know what they mean from the accompanying discussion).

The book gives exercises, but without answers what good are these?

The one thing the book does is make you realize there is a lot you do not know. You can find ideas in portfolio management that exist by reading this book but if you are at all like me you are going to have to look elsewhere for the answers. I have had better luck with Google searches for stuff like Style Analysis.

The book shows how smart the authors are: they know stuff that must of us do not. Unfortunately this is the feeling I get as I read sections of their book. They intend to keep it this way. Bottom line: the book fails to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

5 out of 5 stars This is the seminal text for Quantitative Finance.......2004-11-11

If you work for one of the top alpha quant shops (Barclays, Goldman, etc.), this text is a the proverbial must read. These are the guys that essentially invented quantitative finance in its modern form, building upon the [only somewhat applicable] concepts of Sharpe and Rosenberg and demonstrating how they can be harnassed to drive alpha. Anybody who has given this text a poor review obviously doesn't work in quantitative finance (chances are they're merely stock-pickers). If you want to understand how to drive alpha and beat the market, this text goes a lot further than explaining the simple concepts of information ratio and tracking error; instead, this book touches on the beauty of multi-factor models and covariance risk management.

2 out of 5 stars Very boring and dry.......2004-10-05

This book is a funny phenomenon in itself: it seems that every portfolio manager keeps a copy on her desk, but nobody I've talked to likes the book, or has even really read it. I read it and had to struggle hard to go from one page to the next. It's one of the WORST books I've ever read in any field. The book attempts to give the reader a comprehensive overview of the portfolio management discipline. Unfortunately, it's extremely dry, to the point of boring the reader to death. A lot of pages are also wasted on topics of dubious value, while important subjects like global management is treated lightly. I highly recommend against this book. It's a waste of money.

            Book Description

This book helps managers and investment analysts understand the value of analyzing the long-run growth processes of corporations. The authors develop an approach for analyzing and modeling the productivity growth of individual corporations and show the importance of corporate culture in determining firm performance in the long-run. The model is explained in clear and non-technical terms, and is backed up by full mathematical proofs in an appendix. The authors use their diversity of experience from the business, academic and policy sectors to demonstrate a range of applications for their model. By applying the ideas of complexity and self-organization to the modern corporation, this book provides an alternative to the standard economic approach to corporate growth.

                    Product Description

A Jewish lawyer is bound to --sometimes torn between -- two disparate systems of law and ethics. What do you do when your religion conflicts with your obligations as a lawyer? For that matter, how do you know what your religious obligations are? Michael J. Broyde, Professor of Law at Emory University, founding rabbi of the Young Israel in Atlanta and a member dayan of the Beth Din of America, takes a fearless inside look at the ethical and halakhic issues facing the Jewish lawyer and anyone caught up in the American legal system. This book systematically examines the ethical and halakhic issues raised by the many different facets of law practice, as well as other issues encountered by the Jewish lawyer or others significantly involved in the American legal system. Major topics examined from the perspective of Jewish law include: litigating in secular courts; the problems posed by professional confidentiality; the issues involved in aiding a client in a violation of either Jewish or American law; the ethics of cross examination and the obligations of a lawyer to pursue truth; the problems raised by working as a prosecutor or a defense attorney; practicing bankruptcy law; and the permissibility or obligation of informing on others for violating American law. The book also includes a full discussion of issues posed by family law (including an appendix addressing the 1992 New York Get Law); as well as a complete unit addressing the problems of business law, from usurious transactions to the ethics of negotiation and arbitration. Many other topics are included as well. This book was originally published by Yeshiva University Press in 1996 and has undergone significant revisions and additions for the current edition.

5 out of 5 stars can you be an observant Jew and an ethical lawyer? .......2007-10-07

Yes, says Rabbi Broyde, who concludes that even the most observant Jew can "engage in a religiously proper, economically, intellectually, and socially rewarding practice of law". Broyde explains that even where a client wishes to violate Jewish law, most authorities in halacha (Jewish law) allow a lawyer to assist the client in situations where the client can find another attorney and/or is unlikely to listen to a lawyer's admonitions about such issues. Thus, halacha imposes few restrictions on lawyers other than those imposed by professional ethics rules.

However, there are a few exceptions to this principle:

*Even though a Jewish lawyer may assist someone who will violate halacha no matter what the lawyer does, a lawyer should not actively encourage such violations. For example, a Jewish lawyer should not advise a client to stay married to someone whom Jewish law prohibits one from marrying (i.e. an adherent to another religion or a close relative). Similarly, a lawyer advising a Jewish couple should advise the couple to make the divorce proper under Jewish law.

*Jewish law has traditionally required Jews to litigate commercial disputes with other Jews in a Jewish court (beit din) applying Jewish law. Thus, "Jewish law prohibits a Jew from initiating litigation in secular court against a fellow Jew who might consent to having this matter heard in a beit din." However, where the other party is unlikely to consent, this rule does not apply, because a Jewish litigant should not be punished for his opponent's refusal to go to the beit din.

*Because the Torah requires Jews to avoid pointless falsehood, a lawyer "may not cooperate with the client's desire to present a defense which falsely exonerates the client in a civil matter." So if your client owes money on a loan, you cannot help the client deny the loan ever occurred. Although a Jewish lawyer may represent a guilty criminal defendant, he or she similarly may not create a false defense by allowing his client to commit perjury. (However, halachists are divided as to whether a lawyer may present technical defenses in support of a client who is undoubtedly guilty; Broyde supports a lenient position, arguing that "Since the secular government actually requires that a criminal be represented by a competent lawyer . . . a lawyer' participation as a defense attorney simply insures that society fulfills its obligation to remove evil from its midst- but only in the manner that society has designated as just").

Broyde also points that contrary to popular myth, it is not absolutely necessary for male lawyers or witnesses to wear a yarmulke in court, since such head coverings are a widely accepted pious custom, rather than an actual requirement. In fact, in the 19th century the general custom among Orthodox German Jews (even in schools run by Samson Raphael Hirsch, the most widely remembered champion of German Orthodoxy) was not to wear a head covering while engaged in non-Jewish activities.
