An excellent introduction to Stochastic Integration.......2002-02-27
The arguments are presented carefuly, for example all of the necesary conditions being checked explicitly in places where important theorems are to be applied, and there are none of the annoying statements which plague books on Stochastic Calculus along the lines "the reader can readily check", or "see problem 21.2.43" in the middle of proofs. Additionally very few lines are "skipped" in the proofs; while this does mean that they are lacking in brevity, it is strongly to be encouraged when a complex subject is presented to the novice. When the concepts are understood sufficiently well the reader can easily compile "brief" proofs on his own (as a form of revision), but working the other way round frequently, in my experience of supervising a similar course, leads to misapprehensions about the conditions for applying essential theorems.

Introduction to Stochastic Integration (Universitext)

Book Description
The theory of stochastic integration, also called the Ito calculus, has a large spectrum of applications in virtually every scientific area involving random functions, but it can be a very difficult subject for people without much mathematical background. The Ito calculus was originally motivated by the construction of Markov diffusion processes from infinitesimal generators. Previously, the construction of such processes required several steps, whereas Ito constructed these diffusion processes directly in a single step as the solutions of stochastic integral equations associated with the infinitesimal generators. Moreover, the properties of these diffusion processes can be derived from the stochastic integral equations and the Ito formula. This introductory textbook on stochastic integration provides a concise introduction to the Ito calculus, and covers the following topics:
* Constructions of Brownian motion;
* Stochastic integrals for Brownian motion and martingales;
* The Ito formula;
* Multiple Wiener-Ito integrals;
* Stochastic differential equations;
* Applications to finance, filtering theory, and electric circuits.
The reader should have a background in advanced calculus and elementary probability theory, as well as a basic knowledge of measure theory and Hilbert spaces. Each chapter ends with a variety of exercises designed to help the reader further understand the material.
Hui-Hsiung Kuo is the Nicholson Professor of Mathematics at Louisiana State University. He has delivered lectures on stochastic integration at Louisiana State University, Cheng Kung University, Meijo University, and University of Rome "Tor Vergata," among others. He is also the author of Gaussian Measures in Banach Spaces (Springer 1975), and White Noise Distribution Theory (CRC Press 1996), and a memoir of his childhood growing up in Taiwan, An Arrow Shot into the Sun (Abridge Books 2004).

Battlebabble: The Selling of War in America
Thomas Lee Manufacturer: Common Courage Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1567512879 |
Book Description
Euphemisms sell war. From Operation Desert Storm to Operation Iraqi Free-dom, and throughout the intervening years of deadly sanctions, a dense fog of rhetoric rose to hide the government's imperialistic ambitions and our brutality. Blunt realities of war have been smothered under layers of language. This book will play a role in the evolution of an increased sensitivity towards the deceptive words of war.
Thomas Lee, Ph.D., biologist and pacifist, is also the author of books on the promises and perils of modern genetics, including The Human Genome Project: Cracking the Genetic Code of Life and Conquering Rheumatoid Arthritis: The Latest Breakthroughs and Treatments.

Dryland Agriculture, Second Edition
G. A. Peterson Manufacturer: American Society of Agronomy-Crop Science Society of America-Soil Science Society of America ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0891181601 |
Product Description
Dryland agriculture is of more consequence now than ever because the worlds dependence on food produced in dryland areas is even greater. In recognition of this, and the fact that global food supply is increasingly interconnected, this volume takes a world view of dryland production continent by continent. The initial chapters of the monograph address the principles that underlie all dryland farming, and are the basis for the following chapters that address dryland farming issues around the world.

A very good introduction to this topic.......2000-08-12
The book begins with a discussion of the geology of the aquifer, and then moves into the history of irrigation efforts on the Plains since the 19th century, and finally to a discussion of the various irrigation technologies currently used to exploit the aquifer. There is ample discussion along the way about how these technologies have changed over the years as environmental consciousness and the problems of declining aquifer levels have become more prevalent.
This book is not only a very informative look at the Ogallala Aquifer but is pleasantly readable as well. And now that it is (finally) available in a more affordable paperback edition, I'm going to go buy a copy for myself.

Dry Farming
John A. Widtsoe Manufacturer: Kessinger Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1419116991 |
Book Description
The water that falls on the land is disposed of in three ways: First, under ordinary conditions, a large portion runs off without entering the soil; secondly, a portion enters the soil, but remains near the surface, and is rapidly evaporated back into the air; and, thirdly, a portion enters the lower soil layers, from which it is removed at later periods by several distinct processes. The run-off is usually large and is a serious loss, especially in dry-farming regions, where the absence of luxuriant vegetation, the somewhat hard, sun-baked soils, and the numerous drainage channels, formed by successive torrents, combine to furnish the rains with an easy escape into the torrential rivers. Persons familiar with arid conditions know how quickly the narrow box canyons, which often drain thousands of square miles, are filled with roaring water after a comparatively light rainfall.Download Description

Dry Grain Farming Families: Hausalund (Nigeria) and Karnataka (India) Compared
Polly Hill Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521271029 |
Book Description
Anthropologists and economists have made persistent efforts to identify economic features of rural tropical economies in the simplest possible terms, in order to enhance their universality. This work has resulted in the creation of a body of doctrine on such matters as the causes of rural economic inequality and abysmal poverty which has hardened the arteries of our thought. The doctrine is far too generalised to have any practical utility; it is ahistorical; and it usually involves the dangerous and false belief that all cultivators in any particular community are apt to have similar economic responses. So firm is this orthodoxy (which has a wide political spectrum), so great the fear of the chaos which would result from emphasising the significance of the heterogeneity of socio-economic structures, that under-development studies have become deadlocked - to the point that our ignorance is constantly on the increase. The book represents a radical assault on prevailing orthodoxy: it is an attempt to break the deadlock by insisting on the prior need for the proper categorisation of the main types of agrarian system in the tropical world, which are not necessarily at all numerous. It is, moreover, a thoroughly practical demonstration of the possibilities of identifying one of these important categories and of drawing useful generalised conclusions about it, on the basis of detailed fieldwork in parts of northern Nigeria and south India.

Dry Farming in the Northern Great Plains: Years of Readjustment, 1920-1990
Mary W. M. Hargreaves Manufacturer: University Press of Kansas ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0700605533 |
Book Description
Grandiose plans for land retirement and expanded irrigation have been frequently proposed for the northern Great Plains, but they have not significantly affected agricultural practices in the region.Those major readjustments to farming methods that did occur in the region evolved out of local initiative in response to drought and depression during the 1920s. With some refinements but few amendments, procedures remain basically the same today.
In Dry Farming in the Northern Great Plains, Mary Hargreaves reviews the changes in agricultural technology and farm management through the 1920s, the introduction of federal programs as drought and depression recurred in the 1930s, and the realignment of concerns from drought to marketing instability during the recovery years that followed.
Drought remains a perennial problem in the region, which in this study includes the eastern two-thirds of Montana and the western half of the Dakotas. But instability of marketing has been a greater concern, according to Hargreaves, and marketing, not environmental factors, occasioned the land retirement programs of the 1950s and 1980s.
Despite the economy and practicability of dry farming, the national agricultural policy of acreage restrictions since the 1930s has promoted the use of costly inputs and enabled higher-cost producers to continue competitive operation.
"Misconceptions and myths have too frequently entered into national land-use planning," Hargreaves writes. "There are still those who see the Plains as a 'Great American Desert'; still those who look to irrigation as the only basis for successful agriculture there; and still those who cherish the small diversified homestead operation as the agrarian dream, regardless of the environment."
Dry farming has proved successful in the northern Great Plains, Hargreaves contends. That success is measured not only by production but also by limited erosion. On its record, dry-land agriculture should not now fall prey to "hyperbole, myth, or politics."
This book is part of the Development of Western Resources series.
