NLP for Business.......2000-05-27
This book is primarily a course in solving business problems with Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). It is geared toward showing you how to create and evoke your own internal resourceful states of mind, which will then allow you to create positive solutions for your business needs. Interesting but more of an NLP beginner level book. Some practical guidelines.
Product Description
In this audio seminar you will be introduced to a wealth of resources found within...your unconscious mind.
"Generative Hypnosis: The Fundamentals of the Ericksonian Approach" presents methods you can personally apply toward resolving difficulties within yourself, while creating generative solution-oriented change throughout your life.
Sharing personal anecdotes from the time he spent studying directly with Dr. Milton H. Erickson, Stephen Gilligan presents a simple series of exercises for both your conscious and unconscious mind, all of which are richly based in the principles of Ericksonian Hypnosis. (Please note, you can practice these exercises alone or with another person.)
The program includes 3CDs and a booklet that outlines each of the exercises presented during this live seminar; each is designed to assist with developing greater rapport with your unconscious mind, so you can have greater access to the wealth of resources you have within.
Customer Reviews:
Five stars for content, three stars for production quality.......2007-10-03
Ericksonian method has long been shrouded in a well cultivated mystique. Milton Erickson would probably be amazed and flabergasted with the things done and said in his name, much as one imagines Sigmund Freud would feel about the legions of Freudians who assume that they are on familiar terms with a man they never knew, from times they never lived in, dealing with issues that seem infintely distant from present concerns.
How refreshing and vital that Stephen Gilligan has managed to distill some aspects of the essence of Erickson in this beautifully delivered, deeply humane lecture on the Ericksonian method.
Gilligan has taken it upon himself to make Erickson's profound, and sometimes nearly ineffable insights into the workings of the unconscious mind, into an entertaining, engaging, and substantially educative 3 hour introductory course.
As he began apprenticeship with Erickson when he was 19 years old, Gilligan has so absorbed certain flavors or inner musics of Erickson that there are moments when he seems to be channeling the man.
Suffice it to say, there is far more to Erickson than this very nutritive morsel, and as Gilligan will also say, Erickson, as Freud, was a deeply sober man, who was characterized by his shamanic optimism on one hand and his essential sobriety on the other. In other words, Erickson was no gooey New Age uplifting spiritualist, he fully appreciated the human capacity for Evil, and well saw through the many disguises, subterfuges, and sugar coatings of corrupt motives passed off as good intentions.
However, he had a balanced realism that knew as well the human capacity for goodness and restoration of the soul, amplified by an effective method for getting there. It is this second force, the will to good and wholeness that Gilligan masterfully expands on in this CD set.
If one could voice any minor quibble, it is that Gilligan has been working the therapy circuit for so long, with such remarkable commitment, that he has become somewhat paradigm bound. There is a mild claustrophibia one feels listening to his deliveries, a slight mugginess or hot house enclosure of a man who has recycled his thoughts one year too many. In this aspect, one wishes for Gilligan and the legacy of Erickson that he would take a sabbatical, get out of his head and out of his familiar narratives, throw open the windows and let in some cold blasts of fresh air. Milton would greatly appove.
That said, this is an essential learning tool for anyone working with the deep selves of others, therapists, couselors, rabbis, ministers, and surprisingly, those working with prison populations and police work should avail themselves of this excellent recording.

Introducing Npl: Neuro-Linguistic Programming
ASIN: 185788227X |
Book Description
Following up on the stunning success of her previous bestseller, NLP at Work , internationally acclaimed trainer, speaker, and consultant Sue Knight fills a major gap for a practical, real-world guide to making NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) work in business today. In her characteristically clear, jargon-free, and reader-friendly style, Knight has written the most comprehensive fieldbook to what is truly the heart of NLP: how any organization can achieve excellence by modeling companies and individuals who have achieved success by being true to who they are.
Customer Reviews:
Lacking Direction.......2002-04-29
It is not that I didn't like this book, as I always find tidbits of information in most books I read. As far as NLP books go, this one swims through some fresh ideas though never reaching shore. It is suppose to cover how to model what works in business, though I doubt I could model one after reading this book with out getting lots of additional information elsewhere
Are you ready to go to the heart of NLP....?.......2001-04-10
Are you ready to go beyond the basic skills to the heart of NLP and learn how to model? In reading NLP Solutions Sue Knight guides you on a journey of discovery. Sue brings to life the fascinating experience of how you too can become aware of the difference that makes the difference in successful businesses today. NLP Solutions is accessible, well written and jargon free. Sue offers real insights into how successful organisations have translated the concepts that many of us have learnt in our training and applied them to the real needs facing many businesses today e.g. High-performance Coaching, Personal Selling Skills and Managing and Improving the Relationships. Sue shares her discoveries of patterns of experience and behaviours in ways that are easily understood, encouraging you to think about your own patterns and choices. By reading NLP Solutions you will quickly grasp what already works in other businesses today. Prepare to have your own learning accelerated and your confidence raised in knowing how you can expand on the models presented to create exceptional performance in your own life and the business in which you work.
Intellectually sloppy, lacking in substance.......2001-03-14
No citations, no references, few concrete recommendations or techniques...just one big warm and fuzzy "sell job" on NLP. A weak, weak book.
A marvellous book for business leaders........2000-07-10
Most business leaders are acutely aware that the quality of their leadership is increasingly crucial, not just in strategic terms but as role models of excellence for every member of their team. Leading edge organisations of the future will be those so called 'Learning Organisations' where every member is organically adding increasing value to the business daily. And if you really want to know how to get there, this book captures it beautifully. Sue explains how NLP is currently being applied in organisations in many different ways and contexts and with exceptional results. She does this with amazing ease and pragmatism despite the fact that she is describing a revolution in the development of our organisations. If you want to know how to make giant leaps in the development of your leadership, your people and your business, this is a must.
Neither fish nor flesh ..........2000-06-14
Ought to make it clear that I bought this book in order to help me advance my business career, and I have a technical background. People with different backgrounds will probably form different impressions...
There are a lot of good ideas held in this book, and modelling can certainly help you be successful in a lot of areas but...if you are looking for an outsiders or layperson's guide to the subject, this ain't it. On the one hand, it didn't have the level of intellectual rigour to make you sit back and think "ah - what a good idea, I can see that" - on the other hand it didn't seem to give you practical tips of the kind that make you more effective at work straight-away. For the tecnically minded trying to make it in business - try "How to Win friends and Influence People" and "Influence - the Psychology of Persuasion" and leave this on the shelf. If it's NLP that interests you, there are a lot of better books than this.

Work Less and Play More.......2005-09-27
If you want to retire early or take more time off work, this is the book for you.
This book is a quick read. There are very few boring spots. The author is funny.
I understand now why the retire early home page gave this book five stars - this book delivers.
This book doesn't talk much about investments. But it does talk a lot about basic personal finance, simple living, and how to build a personal treasury.
This book was written in the 1990's, so its a bit dated. But Work Less and Play More is a great read anyway.
The title says it all.......2004-07-27
"Work Less & Play More" presents a viable alternative to the "Work till you're 65, then go home and die" tradition. Contained within this book are many techniques and strategies that can allow someone to reduce their spending and increase their savings, facilitating an early retirement or a semi-retirement.
The chapter entitled "Avoiding Consequence Costs" is excellent. The author makes a convincing argument that you need to examine the total cost of a purchase, not just the initial price. The example he uses is of a dog that has an initial purchase price of $50. But then after the initial purchase there are license fees, shots, food, and vet bills for years afterward. In addition, there is the inconvenience factor to consider: bathing, walking, cleaning up after the dog, etc.
The chapter entitled "The Law of Possessions" is equally well done. He effectively illustrates how every possession has a cost in money and time associated with it.
Another factor that makes this book worthwhile is that it's well written and enjoyable to read.
Highly recommended.

MY 2ND FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME..........2003-09-14
I love this book! It's easy to do and I did it. I haven't
worked in the past 2 years by choice, by following his advice
in this book. If I can do it on 25k a year anyone can. He
really challenges and gets you thinking about the American
Dream. Don't wait until you are 65 to retire, read this book.
It's easy reading and hard to put down. I've read it 5 times.
Don't Wait ! Buy This Book !.......2002-10-29
This is a great read ! Thought provoking, & well written. After reading this book, you'll find yourself saying "Jeez, maybe I could do it !" At the very least, you'll be thinking about the quality of your life now, and the way it could be. Don't hesitate - just buy the book......
Refreshing In Its Simplicity.......2001-08-09
I, for one, really liked this book! As someone who is more than ready to retire from the rat race and have shared similar thoughts, it was an affirmation of my own instincts. Catlin recommends that we evaluate the difference between needs and wants (and doesn't label "wants" as necessarily bad, asks only that we be conscious of the difference), think of the "consequence costs" of the things we buy and recommends that we simply... save our money! I've been reading plenty of books about investing and find that most of them are far too complex for those who simply don't have enough interest to learn all the details. Catlin is not recommending gambling... but conserving. His concept of a "personal treasury" worked well. His discussion of the minimalist lifestyle made a great deal of sense. All in all, well worth reading! For those who want to escape the mind-numbing conformity of corporate America and want more quality and leisure, the ideas presented in the book are right on! I would like to see more books by Steven Catlin, perhaps addressing some of the simpler investment options like low-cost mutual funds and I-Bonds.

How, exactly, does a dog work? The authors use the example of a dog who accompanies its human companion on a jog, chases a couple of squirrels, dives into a pond to cool off, then catches up with its master. Later it might roll in something like sewage or a cow pie, but despite the attendant stink, still maintains its charm and enthusiasm. And by the end of the job, the dog is right there with its favorite human. In other words, the dog has managed to get its "work" finished, while still indulging its curiosities, getting its adrenaline flowing, and even stirring up some trouble. Never mind that someone who actually worked that way would be diagnosed with ADD--the authors' point is that work works best when it's regularly infused with fun. That makes people look forward to work--the way the aforementioned dog looks forward to jogging with its human pal--rather than dreading it.
Among the 50 lessons are specific ideas about scheduling games at work, giving employees unexpected rewards, and treating employees better than customers. Even more useful, though, might be the general tips for stress reduction. For example, in chapter 35, "Learn the Wisdom of Water," you learn to react to problems as water reacts: it flows. If it gets blocked, it flows around the problem, but also gradually wears it down. If it is dammed, it eventually finds a way over, under, or through the problem. So when all else fails, the authors say, watch water flow. If you can't do that in the middle of your workday, open the company fridge and stare at a bottle of Evian. Because in absurdity often comes stress relief. --Lou Schuler
Book Description
Having more fun at work isn't a fantasy.
It's a smart and savvy strategy to becoming a more creative, productive, and dynamic employee.
Work Like Your Dog is an inspiring call to "come out and play" at work. Dogs seem to have endless energy and tackle tasks with enviable enthusiasm, and Matt Weinstein and Luke Barber believe that most people could take a course from their ca-nines. By learning to play more at their jobs, workers can "lick" difficult challenges, take pleasure from tasks previously dreaded, reduce their levels of stress, and recharge their creative side.
People spend more time working, thinking about work, and traveling to and from work than all other waking activities combined. Employees are asked to do more for less--making their work lives more exhausting and less satisfying. More hours are far from the answer; honing a sense of frolic and fun is. This book is a launching pad for fifty fun lessons about frolicking your way to success:
Don't be afraid of being the fool. Be prepared to take risks; your new experiences may well lead to new contacts or new accounts and, if nothing else, will make you feel wonderful.
Celebrate every success, not just your own but your coworker's new account, brilliant idea, or anniversary.
You'll help release tension, underscore positives, and keep people aware of challenges conquered.
Use humor to solve problems. Create a swearing room, where you and coworkers vent frustrations. Use a joke to diffuse verbal abuse from a customer. Humor can help you stay focused on the most important aspects of your job and prevent the worst aspects from getting the upper hand.
Why choose stress? Almost every situation can provoke either stress or laughter. If you choose the highway of humor, your job will be more enjoyable and you'll work more effectively.
And many more suggestions, stories, and ideas to unleash your playful professional and keep you from barking up the wrong tree.
Weinstein and Barber's advice comes from seminar attendees and hundreds of corporate clients, such as American Express, IBM, Federal Express, and AT&T. This book shares the wisdom from these employees and from twenty-plus years of helping people enjoy their way to success.

how-to guide for being a goofball at work.......2001-08-25
Work Like Your Dog contains some nuggets of wisdom, and lots of advice on how to play at your job, approaching it as if it were a game. I LIKE many of the ideas, such as treating your employees even better than your customers, but I can't imagine applying them in my own straight-laced, uptight work environment. Unless you're the president or the CEO (and perhaps, even if you are), implementing most of the ideas in this book would likely undermine your credibility. For example, the authors suggest things like decorating coworkers old shoes with glitter and plastic flowers, and wearing the "fun" shoes at work. One of the authors attached the metal runner statuettes from all of his running tropies to the roof of his car, creating a "race" car -- and suggests that similar activities create a fun environment. (Yes, but if someone drove such a car into the parking lot where I work, they'd be dubbed hopelessly crazy.) The authors also suggest that acting like a fool in the middle of a heated argument can be particularly effective -- In suggesting ways to turn fights into frolics, they suggest cracking a raw egg against your forehead in the middle of a domestic dispute. Some of the advice is funny -- One Shell trainer created a "swearing room" next to her office, a place where her coworkers could sound off. She then gave prizes for the most impressive swearing (which was "Gods' bees, and scrunties alight!) The book is a fun, creative, quick read. How applicable it is to you & your work environment depends, in large part, on you & your work environment. I'm not sure these techniques would get you very far in a large corporate environment, but they'd be great if you run your own business.
Take it from a student!.......2000-02-17
I've just returned from a reading of this book by my philosophy professor, Dr. Luke Barber. Although he only read from a couple chapters, it was easy to figure out that this book is definitely a must have for anyone who loves life (or would like to learn how). Containing good, useful (not to mention funny) stories, you will be able to relate to the text easily and effectively! I plan on purchasing this book and I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested (and even those that are not!).
Fabulously enteraining AND educational........1999-08-01
Do you want to improve YOUR working environment? Buy a copy of this for your CEO or manager. Have a singing messenger deliver it, and watch your place of business turn into a place you WANT to go to. These examples and stories are useful even outside the workplace...in your everyday life. In an period of low unemployment, where employee retention is difficult, these ideas can give your company an edge on your competition.
This is a worthwhile manual on making work fun........1999-04-23
If you ever get the chance to share an office with Matt Weinstein or Luke Barber, don't pass it up. These coauthors, respectively a management consultant and a philosophy professor, tell hilarious stories and exhibit both fiendish creativity and charming warmth in this worthwhile manual of making work fun. The anecdotes are superb. When Barber recounts spending a summer moonlighting from his job as a college professor by working as a yardman, it's as funny as a classic "I Love Lucy" episode. When a con artist scams one of the authors out of $110, you feel for him as deeply as if your own cash had been lost. The lessons live up to the packaging. They're simple, effective, and somehow surprising. Sure, work would be a blast if your company hired a masseuse to roam the cubicles giving out free neck and shoulder rubs. And if your boss gave you $100, took you to the mall, and told you not to report back to the office until you had spent it all, Monday would definitely look less black. Why has no one suggested this before? The authors provide far more than fifty ways to make work fun. They propose an entirely new mind-set about work, one that makes it less about earning a living and more about simply living.
What a great book!.......1999-02-26
What a great book! Matt and Luke spotlight the inanities of life and how your life needs to have more of them. They provide a clear reminder not to take yourself, your circumstances, or your life too seriously. It's the next best thing to having your own personal therapist help you keep things in perspective -- and a lot cheaper as well!!" -- Bob Nelson, President Nelson Motivation, Inc. Well written book-A KEEPER for people who are becoming US Citizens.......2007-05-26
This book has a LOT of detail in it. It gives you an excellent idea of how our Federal government is organized, who runs what parts of the government, background on the organization of the Federal government.
The book has the full text of the US Constitution, along with the amendments, and explanations of same. There is also a list of all the US Presidents and Vice Presidents.
There are links to many websites, both public and private, that are of interest.
The book is well written and should be considered by anyone who will be taking a citizenship test.
For those of you who are buying this book because it is required for your class: If you actually read this book, you WILL learn some very interesting things.
Just a book.......2007-05-20
This is probably a classroom requirement, so it doesn't really matter what I think about it.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
A fine, if a bit shallow, study.......2000-03-28
As its modest dimensions would suggest, Witte's book is meant to be a quick overview of judicial attitudes towards religious freedom in the United States, instead of a comprehensive history. The author does a marvelous job of consolidating the varied factors that have gone into the current stare decisis in First Amendment religion jurisprudence. Witte has a very readable style, and this book would hold the interest of the casual reader while serving quite well as a text book for classes on the subject.

Book Description
This edited collection of readings from Antifederalist thought was first published in 1985. Here presented with a completely revised and updated interpretive essay from the editors and expanded to cover the period of the founding from 1776-91, this book is the most complete one-volume collection of its kind.
Customer Reviews:
Nice sampling of Antifederalist thought.......2007-06-03
As the book notes at the outset (page viii), "'The Antifederalists' is the name commonly used to designate those people who opposed the ratification of the Constitution." Most Americans are probably pretty much unaware of the key opponents of the Constitution as it was being debated--let alone understanding the arguments raised against the document. This edited volume helps to address this lack of awareness by presenting many key documents authored by those who opposed the Constitution. As such, it enriches our understanding of what was "at stake" during the Constitutional debate.
The book reminds us that the Antifederalists actually had demonstrable effects on the final version of the Constitution; for one thing, their argument about the need for a Bill of Rights led to a promise by Federalists (supporters of the proposed Constitution) to include such an item after the new government was formed and operational.
The Introduction notes two key issues animating the Antifederalists and dividing them from the Federalists--(page x): ". . .the people are the sovereigns of the government; and an express reservation of powers qualified the government by affirming the people's sovereignty." A central issue dividing the opposing camps, indeed, was the very nature of representation. Antifederalists wanted more representation (annual elections, rotation in office [now referred to as "term limits"], large numbers of representatives), whereas the Federalists, as indicated in the "Federalist Papers," wanted some distance between the people and their representatives.
The preceding lays out the nature of the volume. There are some nice features of the work, such as a timeline of events during ratification. What about the contents of the book? Chapter One focuses on the origin of Antifederalist thought (including writings by John Lansing, Luther Martin, and John Lansing, among others). Chapter Two looks at the Antifederalists' views of the Federalists, including speeches by Patrick Henry at the Virginia Ratifying Convention. Chapter Three explores the Antifederalist view of republicanism. Some of the major works on this subject that appeared in print are presented in the book. The final chapter examines Antifederalist support.
In sum, this is not a perfect volume (many important essays are left out, but one can only include so much, and the editors' selection is a reasonable set of works), but it does provide a representative compendium of works by the Antifederalists. As such, the book helps enhance understanding of the debates of that era and indicates key issues that were at stake during the debate.
