Book Description
Improving the way that technology is transferred from laboratory to marketplace is central to improving American productivity and competitiveness in a global economy. In this provocative analysis, Stephen Doheny-Farina shows that the technical and commercial processes of turning technologies into products are, in significant ways, communication processes. He explores the key role that technical communicators must play in the movement of technology from expert designers and developers to users. Several lengthy case studies illustrate the rhetorical issues involved in technology transfers as well as the rhetorical barriers to their success.
Doheny-Farina argues that processes typically called information transfer and technology transfer are not transfers at all but instead are series of personal constructions and reconstructions of knowledge, expertise, and technologies by the participants attempting to adapt technological innovations for social uses.
Underscoring the rhetorical nature of any technology transfer, the case studies describe the powerful effect that a startup company's business plan can have on its future (including the many factors that surround the writing of a business plan), the rhetorical barriers to the transfer of an experimental artificial heart from a university research hospital to a biomedical products manufacturer, and two compelling situations that call for the inclusion of technical writers in new product development from its inception.
A final chapter focuses on the important elements in the education of technical communicators and an appendix discusses classroom applications and includes a fictional case incorporating issues of intraorganizational barriers to collaboration in the new product development process.
Stephen Doheny-Farina is Assistant Professor in the Technical Communications Department at Clarkson University. His previous book, Effective Documentation received the 1989 Award for the Best Collection of Essays, the National Council of Teachers of English Awards for Scientific and Technical Communication.

Technical Communication by Mike Markel.......2007-10-10
I think the book is good , specially for the beginners , but certainly the price is more.
text book.......2007-08-05
won't know till it's used in class, is a hard and expensive text to find
Best Technical Writing Textbook I Have Seen.......2007-07-26
Being very nervous about my first semester as a technical writing instructor, I pored over about half-a-dozen different books to get ideas and to see which textbook would be best to teach in the future. In spite of its shocking price, this book won hands-down.
This book (even more than the 7th edition) does an excellent job of taking students through the process of creating documents, helping students to understand the parts of the document and what each part does, and also gives some helpful sample documents. Unlike many technical writing texts which I have seen, both ethical and rhetorical issues are treated effectively and simply, while a good balance is struck between nuts-and-bolts grammar and formatting advice and discussions of audience awareness, credibility, and tone.
This book also has a number of helpful "Guidelines" boxes, wherein specific, concrete advice for particular writing tasks is given in a straightforward bulleted list. There is also some useful material on the companion website.
Overall, aside from the high price and the sometimes too-intense use of color and formatting features to draw attention to every little thing, this book is extremely useful for aspiring technical communicators.
An excellenct book to technical writting.......2007-02-07
I used this book for a junior composition class I took. I am terrible at writting and this book made it a lot easier the examples are well laid out and the material is as well. A good technical book. It helped me write a resume that worked.

Book Description
When the Soviet Union’s communist empire collapsed in 1989, a mood of euphoria took hold in the West and in Eastern Europe. The West had won the ultimate victory--it had driven a silver stake through the heart of Communism. Its next planned step was to help the nations of Eastern Europe to reconstruct themselves as democratic, free-market states, and full partners in the First World Order. But that, as Janine Wedel reveals in this gripping volume, was before Western governments set their poorly conceived programs in motion. Collision and Collusion tells the bizarre and sometimes scandalous story of Western governments’ attempts to aid the former Soviet block. He shows how by mid-decade, Western aid policies had often backfired, effectively discouraging market reforms and exasperating electorates who, remarkably, had voted back in the previously despised Communists. Collision and Collusion is the first book to explain where the Western dollars intended to aid Eastern Europe went, and why they did so little to help. Taking a hard look at the bureaucrats, politicians, and consultants who worked to set up Western economic and political systems in Eastern Europe, the book details the extraordinary costs of institutional ignorance, cultural misunderstanding, and unrealistic expectations.

Beyond Ideology.......2000-02-04
In the literature on the subject, Janine R. Wedel's researcj stands as a fine example of scientific honesty. It gives one hope that social science is possible beyond ideology, capitalistic or otherwise.
Better than a therapist for those working in the field!.......1999-08-03
Hello Janine:
I have been living in Belarus for the past five years, working with NGOs, and assisting with the development of the Third Sector.
I was home in December and through the fog of my jet lag heard a TV commentator talk about your book 'Collision and Collusion.' Almost literally, I rushed out to buy it. I was told it was a new book and not in the bookstore yet. I urged them to order it for me quickly as I was returning to Belarus in January. They were successful, and I left for Minsk with your book in my carry-on luggage.
There aren't words to describe how your book affected me. Until I read it, I thought I was going crazy. The book confirmed that the inconsistencies in foreign assistance that I had been observing for five years were real and someone had actually documented them. Knowing that others had made this observation relieved much of the frustration I was feeling. Since then, I have been recommending Collision and Collusion to anyone I know who is working in Eastern Europe and the NIS. It is better than a therapist.
I am pleased that you have brought this situation to the world's attention. It saddens me to know that many of our foreign assistance dollars are being lost---first, for the American taxpayer and second, for the needy recipient. Perhaps, your efforts will encourage decision-makers to rectify this situation.
Warmest Regards, C.M. Wilde
Nothing Of Use.......1999-04-15
As a doctoral candidate deeply fascinated by the problems of foreign aid outlined in this book, I chanced across it and my interest was piqued. Upon reading it I found litle of value that hadn't been hashed out in the news before and already reported on extensively. In short, save yourself the money and the time.
American wonks are a global menace........1999-04-06
Chapter four in this astonishingly important book describes incompetence and corruption which devasted Russia when Washington gave Harvard University virtually dictatorial powers to "reform" Russia's post-communist economic system. Not only was our ivory-tower privatization a fiasco but we left a shameful legacy of hatred and distrust. Harvard made Stalin look good. As a US citizen I wish devoutly there were a way for us to undo the insult and harm. As a nation we chose to forget what we inflicted on the Russian people in 1918 - by brutal efforts to destroy "socialism" which only pushed that reform into remorseless paranoia and terror. Russians and "socialists" will never forget it. In the 1990's we blundered again. The rest of this book is anthropology, which - as an economist - I found distinctly less interesting. Maybe that's a fault in me. But for all our sakes I hope it will not discourage people from getting the truth in chapter four.
will something be done?.......1999-03-22
It seems this book is a progress report. It's great value is diminshed by two factors. 1) shouldn't there be a Congrressional investigation at least? Are the Harvard sophomores going to get away with their mischief? and 2) Wedel needs a collaborator who knows the difference between trade and liquidity . Anthropologists, perhaps, cannot see the big picture; wordiness spoils the effect of this serious and important study. Needs work, but deserves a prize.

Workplace writers talk about what they learn.......2006-11-14
This book is easy to read. It is full of direct quotes: young writers talk about what it takes to write well in a nonprofit environment, where success depends on tact, grace, and knowing the audience. Executive Director Mei talks about the genres and techniques that young writers must learn. There are before-and-after examples. As a professional teacher of business writing, I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what writing is really like after you graduate from college and get that first job in a service or nonprofit business.
A very tough read.......2005-11-14
Unless you are a writing student or someone researching writing, then you should avoid this book. It's very slow and very analytical, purely for hard-core research addicts. This book was read as a college text because there was not a more readily-available text book. This text does not teach one how to write better, it simply presents a research project done regarding the progress of writing styles of four women working in a non-profit organization.

I recommend this short reference book to all my MBA students--a desk reference they can keep.

Finally - A real view of organizations.......2000-05-22
Finally a book that tells how companies and the government really operate. I always wondered why people, who can be really nice individuals, will do the nastiest things when they become presidents of corporations. This book finally explained why.
After reading this book, I will never listen to another announcement from any official organization the same way. Like the book says, people don't count and nobody is in charge.
I highly reccommend this book to anyone who thinks for themselves.

Material is dated with emphasis on HP way of doing business.......1999-05-20
Though the book was titled, "Manage Globally, think Locally,", the material often did not discuss global issues. Clearly, this was written with a local HP mentality, with little, if any, fresh ideas.
