          Book Description

This book is an introduction to financial mathematics for mathematicians. It is intended both for graduate students with a certain background in probability theory as well as for professional mathematicians in industry and academia. In contrast to many textbooks on mathematical finance, only discrete-time stochastic models are considered. This setting has the advantage that the text can concentrate from the beginning on typical problems which are suggested by financial applications. Moreover, certain principles, such as the general incompleteness of realistic market models, become thus more transparent and visible. On the other hand, all models are based on general probability spaces, and so the text captures the interplay between probability theory and functional analysis which is typical for modern mathematical finance.

The first part of the book contains a study of financial investments in a static one-period market model. Here, an investor faces intrinsic risk and uncertainty, which cannot be hedged away. The tools presented to deal with this situation range from the classical theory of expected utility until the more recent development of measures of risk.

In the second part of the book, the idea of dynamic hedging and arbitrage-free pricing of contingent claims is developed in a multi-period framework. Such market models are typically incomplete, and particular focus is given to

methods combining the dynamic hedging of a risky position with the tools of assessing risk and uncertainty as presented in part.

Contents: Mathematical finance in one period: Arbitrage theory. Expected utility. Optimal investments. Measures of risk Dynamic Arbitrage Theory: Dynamic hedging of contingent claims. American contingent claims. Optional decomposition and super-hedging. Efficient hedging in incomplete markets. Minimizing the hedging error. Hedging under constraints References. Index

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on mathematical finance.......2004-04-20

It is well-known that the mathematical study of finance has, over the last two decades, led to a number of discoveries in stochastic analysis whose import extends beyond the boundaries of finance to other areas of mathematics. There are, currently, many good text-books which treat the mathematics of financial markets (e.g. Pliska, Bingham&Kiesel, Elliott&Kopp, Musiela&Rutkowski, Karatzas&Shreve, roughly in increasing order of difficulty. Pliska's text works only in the discrete-time framework, whereas the others move quickly to continuous-time). The text by Follmer and Schied deals only with the discrete-time case, but covers a large amount of material which you won't find in any of the other books: A thorough introduction to utility theory, excellent coverage of coherent and convex risk measures, and various approaches to hedging in incomplete markets. Each chapter quickly brings the reader close to the frontiers of research. Future research in these areas also promises to overflow the boundaries, providing new applications to other branches of functional analysis.

A word of caution: Though the text restricts itself to the "simpler" discrete-time case, thus avoiding stochastic integration, it nevertheless demands a solid background in analysis, including graduate level probability theory and functional analysis. Though not technically a requirement, some background in mathematical finance is necessary in order to understand what this book is about.

In conclusion, therefore, don't make this your first book on mathematical finance -- get Bingham&Kiesel instead. But if you have the mathematical background, and are analytically inclined, do buy it. This book is a phenomenal achievement.

              Book Description

Adriaan Lanni draws on contemporary legal thinking to present a new model of the legal system of classical Athens. She analyzes the Athenians' preference in most cases for ad hoc, discretionary decision-making, as opposed to what moderns would call the rule of law. Lanni argues that the Athenians consciously employed different approaches to legal decision-making in different types of courts. The varied approaches to legal process stems from a deep tension in Athenian practice and thinking, between the demand for flexibility of legal interpretation consistent with the exercise of democratic power by ordinary Athenian jurors; and the demand for consistency and predictability in legal interpretation expected by litigants and necessary to permit citizens to conform their conduct to the law. Lanni presents classical Athens as a case study of a successful legal system that, by modern standards, had an extraordinarily individualized and discretionary approach to justice.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest of All Greek Historians.......2007-06-26

The greatest of all Greek historians was the Athenian general Thucydides (455-400 B.C.E.). Thucydides' classic work, "History Of The Peloponnesian War", provides us with the historical framework for 5th century Greece, a golden age of intellectual achievement and creativity rarely equaled in human history. This history is by far the best account of the bitter war between Athens and Sparta as well as the only surviving contemporary record of the rise of the Athenian empire. Thucydides as a master storyteller does not just cover the battle scenes; he records the great political speeches of Pericles, leader of Athens, and Lysander leader of Sparta with great acumen. He is recognized as the first historian to actually go and get eyewitness accounts, visit battlefieilds and research documents and records. This work took him over 20 years and it shows!

The lessons he teaches about imperial over reaching and unreasonable peace settlements are prescient today as they were during his times. President Woodrow Wilson, read this book on his voyage across the Atlantic to the Versailles Peace Conference and vociferously fought the other Allies in making unreasonable demands of the Germans. Wilson learned the dangers that the world would be placed in by backing the Germans into a corner politically and economically from Thucydides book.

I never before recommended reading an abridged work of history; however, Paul Woodruff does the best job of abridging Thucydides that I have ever come across in historical texts. He gives you the basic narrative and makes sure to include all of the important orations and debates from the original work.

As a graduate student in philosophy and history, I heartily recommend this timeless classic to anyone who is interested in political philosophy, and history. I also recommend you read it with David Cartwright's "A Historical Commentary On Thucydides."

5 out of 5 stars Philosophy; Tragic History; and Greek Geopolitics.......2004-06-26

I agree with the first reviewer: this book is a great condensation of Thucydides' work. The book is editted to retain all of Thucydides' great insights into human nature, power, and politics, but summarized in a way where all of the essential details of the story are left in place.

With its sweeping description of events in various areas of the Greece, and its dramatic portrayal of historic figures: the book works as a great description of the nature of politics, democracy and war, and at the same time an engaging study of leadership, and the men who were perported to be great during these times.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Distillation of Thucydides' Genius.......2003-10-05

I can't think of another abridgment of a classic more after my own heart. I am a passionate believer in reading all of Thucydides, but this book is still the ideal way to get to know what is great about the historian. (And, as our democracy is at war & struggles with imperial entanglements, Thuc. is more relevant than ever.)

Basically, Woodruff has an unerring instinct for where Thucydides (not a mere fact-compiler, but one of antiquity's great thinkers) is at his sizzling & profound best. The introduction is a marvelous piece of criticism and analysis: in merely 24 pp. it acquaints the reader with Thucydides' important ideas. The idea of this book is to give you 185 pp. to read cover-to-cover (if not in a single sitting!--what are you waiting for?--do it, and blow your mind). Woodruff's connecting summaries & brief introductory comments to each excerpt make sure that readers will experience the whole coherently.

My one quibble is that I'd like to have the defeat of the Sicilian Expedition & its aftermath in all its gruesome detail, but this would have almost doubled the size of the book and defeated the purposes I've praised above. For a complete translation, try Lattimore (also pub. by Hackett)--or, if 17th c. English doesn't bother you, Hobbes' translation is a real treat to savor.

This book examines the legal regulation of violence and the role of litigation in Athenian society. Using comparative anthropological and historical perspectives, David Cohen challenges traditional evolutionary and functionalist accounts of the development of legal process. Examining Athenian theories of social conflict and the rule of law, as well as actual litigation involving the regulation of violence, the book emphasizes the way in which the judicial process operates in an agonistic society.

                  Book Description

Do we believe the law good because it is just, or is it just because we think it is good? This collection of essays addresses the relationship of justice to law through the works of Homer, Herodotus, Plato, Aristotle, Sophocles and the Islamic thinker al Farabi. The issues explored include the foundations of our understanding of justice; the foundation of authority of law; the relative merits of the rule of law versus the authority of a wise and just king; the uneasy relationship between particular laws and the general notion of justice (equity); various aspects of justice (reciprocity, proportionality) and their application in law; and the necessity of the rule of law to the goodness and success of a political order. The distinguished contributors often make explicit comparisons to modern situations and contemporary debates. This book will be valuable for those interested in classical political theory, political philosophy, and law.

This volume explores Plato's and Aristotle's theories about good things, goodness, and the best life for human beings, and draws comparisons between ancient and modern theories of good and justice.Goodness and Justice argues that goodness was the most fundamental normative concept in the ethics of Plato and Aristotle, and illustrates how they used their functional and formal theories of good to build their theories of virtue, justice, and happiness. It also shows that they fought subjective theories of good as desire satisfaction and good as pleasure, in favor of what they thought was a more objective concept of good found in form and function. The comparisons with the moderns illuminate the merits and limits of ancient and modern ethical theories and place them within a broad philosophical and historical context.

I thought this book gave a thorough and accessible overview of Socratic, Platonic, and Aristotelian political philosophy and ethics. The analysis was well structured offering a credibly argued interpretive position on each.

However, one expects the book to concentrate more heavily on the structural comparisons with contemporary normative theory regarding justice/goodness. Whilst the opening chapter promises such, this emphasis is quite absent through the majority of the work. There is argument concerning the anti-subjectivism of the ancient moral conceptions, though this seems rather in the peripheral of the author's vision, than at the central focus of the text.

This book is worth buying for the way in which it summarises recent literature within Ancient Greek moral theory. This is highest calibre exegesis and analysis. In my opinion, it would have been more intellectually interesting (and more aligned to the book title) if the ancient/modern comparison had been explored with more vigour.

I gained much from this book, which was an enjoyable and worthwhile read (despite the numerous typographical errors - which should be corrected in further re-prints).

This book focuses on the lysimeter concept, an instrument for measuring materials dissolved by water. Developed in Europe and gaining popularity in the United States, the lysimeter is particularly useful for measuring herbicide and pesticide contamination. This volume presents work from many of the leading experts and discusses the full range of techniques.
