    Book Description

    Finalist for the George Terry Award sponsored by the Academy of Management "This lovely and important book is the clearest, most complete, and interesting statement of sensemaking in organizations available. . . . It will have an impact on both new and experienced scholars." --Bob Sutton, Stanford University "Weick is artful. He masterfully constructs the sensemaking theoretical framework so that it can be better understood by the general scholar and in the process provides the reader with the sensemaking experience." --Kathleen Sutcliffe, University of Minnesota The teaching of organization theory and the conduct of organizational research have been dominated by a focus on decision making and the conception of strategic rationality. The rational model, however, ignores the inherent complexity and ambiguity of real-world organizations and their environments. Karl E. Weick's new landmark volume, Sensemaking in Organizations, highlights how the "sensemaking" process--the creation of reality as an ongoing accomplishment that takes form when people make retrospective sense of the situations in which they find themselves--shapes organizational structure and behavior. Some of the topics Weick thoroughly covers are the concept, uniqueness, historical roots, varieties and occasions, general properties, and the future of sensemaking research and practice. Expertly written, Sensemaking in Organizations is the volume that students, scholars, and professors of organization and management studies must have.

    3 out of 5 stars Sensemaking fails to translate theory into practice.......2001-06-25

    Weick's book is thoroughly researched, drawing its insights from psychological and organisational studies.

    It offers new views on how organisations operate, and how they generate meaning. It points out that reality is not something outside the organisation, but something that is constructed by people within the organisation - an empowering insight. Weick also extensively discusses where and how this 'making of sense' happens.

    But the book fails largely in linking this theory to practice. After making sense of 'Sensemaking', (which requires some mental acrobatics!), I still don't know how a leader can influence the sensemaking process to the benefit of the organisation. I'm still left with the basic question: So what?

    5 out of 5 stars Powerful insight into how people work together.......1997-08-20

    This book has a very academic tone but it has some powerful implications for anyone in business. The book makes a number of points that are not intuitive but that are very powerful. For example, he talks about the advantages of speed, confidence, and plausibility in problem solving and why they may be more important than accuracy

    Book Description

    This edited volume brings together a select group of leading organizational scholars for the purpose of developing a foundation-setting book on positive relationships at work. Positive Relationships at Work (PRW) is a rich new interdisciplinary domain of inquiry that focuses on the generative processes, relational mechanisms and outcomes associated with positive relationships between people at work. This volume builds a solid foundation for this promising new area of scholarly inquiry and offers a multidisciplinary exploration of how relationships at work become a source of growth, vitality, learning and generative states of human and collective flourishing. The Commentator Chapters, written by preeminent scholars, uncover and discuss integrative themes that emerge within sections.

    The editors approach the topic from multiple levels, each level providing critical, valuable insights into the dynamic process underlying positive relationships at work. These levels are arranged in five parts:
    * an introduction to positive relationships at work;
    * Individuals and Dyads;
    * Groups and Communities;
    * Organizations & Organizing; and
    * a conclusion that offers an engaging invitation and multi-level map for guiding future research.

    This volume will appeal to academics and practitioners, as well as scholars and graduate students in organizational psychology, management, human resources, and inter-personal communications.

    Dutton and Ragin's edited book brings together top scholars to explore the positive side of relationships at work. All the chapters involve and prod the reader to new areas of studying relationships. It also gives a glimpse into the rich personal relationship literature. Organizational scholars will reap much if they integrate the personal relationship literature in their work.

      Book Description

      "Buzzanell's edited book has a poststructural sensibility in its emphasis on dialogue, absent voices, and the open-ended, constructed nature of knowledge. . . . In summary, I would recommend this book highly. . . Buzzanell's reader would be a corrective for traditional texts used in communications, Master of Public Administration, and Master of Business Administration programs."

      -NATIONAL WOMEN'S STUDIES ASSOCIATION JOURNAL

      Rethinking Organizational Communication From Feminist Perspectives reconsiders organizational and managerial communication theories, research, and practice from multiple feminisms. Part I consists of theoretical analyses that reconceptualize and extend boundaries in our thinking about work and organizing processes. The chapters propose an alternative view of public-private discourse, stakeholder ethics, socialization processes, and negotiation by contrasting traditional approaches with feminist values. Part II presents women’s voices through interview excerpts, poems, diary entries, and stories and explores the ways in which these concrete details of ordinary lives represent missing facets and nuances of our organizational and managerial communication work. Part III contains chapters that rewrite organizational and managerial constructs. The authors not only offer alternative reconceptualizations, but also suggest specific tactics and long-term strategies devised from feminisms for revising organizational and managerial communication processes and practices. The final section of the book draws together the themes of the book and encourages a continuing dialogue on the issues.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Helpful with problem-solving.......2002-10-01

      Contrary to the other review, I find this book very helpful. I haven't gone yet to look at the reliability of the studies cited in the book, however there is a point to the "nude" chart on page 79. It is to point out that people respond consciously and unconsciously to differently to certain body types and whether people want to admit to it or not, it is true. I found the information they gave on how to problem-solve very helpful and ways in which to talk with others for effective group discussions or meetings. Although I am in the field of education, it is helpful for teachers in that we meet with parents, other educators, and other professionals all the time, making effective communication very important, especially with difficult parents.

      1 out of 5 stars Communicating in Business and Professional Settings.......2000-02-24

      This is a horrible book, and I encourage professors looking for serious organizational communication texts to look elsewhere. The book is dominated by unintentionally hilarious "studies", superfluous instruction on how to be politically correct, redundant space-wasting charts, and confusing self-contradiction. The authors, two Professors of Communications from the University of South Alabama, see fit to include such valuable learning tools as a drawing entitled, "several body shapes" (pg 79) which depicts 4 nude women from the back, each with a different degree of body fat, and Exhibit 4.7 (pg 86) which cites a "study" to show us that Native, Asian, African, and Hispanic Americans favor "Harmony with the nature and environment" while Whites favor "Mastery over nature and the environment" Ignoring the deep dubiousness of this point, I think that most of this book is a waste of time, unfit for any higher learning. In fact, I find this book intellectually offensive.

        From the supplier: Pres. Ronald Reagan's enactment of Public Law 100 to 107 has forced companies to take quality seriously. In a report for the General Accounting Office, the new attitude toward total quality management (TQM) can be characterized by a belief in total participation of company executives in the TQM effort. Also, companies consider clientele as the most significant factor in TQM. Corporate culture now reflect the new attitude and the trend is toward inclusiveness.

                5 out of 5 stars Meditate & Create.......2007-05-09

                I'm about 2 weeks into this 40 Day Prosperity Plan, using the CD version of the book. Initially, I loved to listen while I walked on the otherwise dull treadmill, or as I relaxed in the tub. That's how it all began. NOW, I am so immersed that I meditate each morning and evening, and I have fully begun to really understand the concepts. It will possibly take me the full 40 days, and that's okay, because I really am becoming addicted to the soothing sound of JRP's voice. It does, however, make good sense to buy the written version so that the meditations are easier memorized and meditated upon. The biblical references were something I needed to adjust to, considering myself non-denominational. However, that was easily rectified as I claim my own definition of God Source. I'll check back once my 40 days are up and let you know how the program is working for me. Thanks Price, for another priceless package. I thoroughly enjoyed the Super Beings years ago. And it looks as if this 40 Day Prosperity Plan is another winner! Blessings in the Mire

                5 out of 5 stars Hey, it works!.......2006-02-23

                John Randolph Price knows things that most people do not know. The best thing about the 40 Day Prosperity Plan is that one does not have to fully understand it for it to work. I keep mine playing in my car cd player all the time and my finances just keep getting better and better. Gradually, I am understanding more and more of the high concepts that he shares. Thank you, JRP!

                3 out of 5 stars I must be a little naive..........2005-12-10

                I was not familiar with John Randolf Price before buying this CD and if I had known what I was buying I would have passed. No where on the front cover or on his book "The Abundance Book" does it tell you that it is a scripture based program. I was taken a little by surprise with all of the bible references and call me naive but I was not expecting that. I listened to the CD a couple of times and there are some good ideas but with so much bible reference it was not really for me. None of the printed material pointed to the content being scripture based and personally I think it should have been presented in a more straightforward way on the packaging.

                5 out of 5 stars A Plan for Miracles.......2004-07-03

                The 40-day Prosperity Plan has completely changed my life. I am now on my 4th round and I am constantly experiencing miraculous abundant changes and events in my life. When I started this program in February of 2004, I was skeptical. However, I persevered, and just before the first round 40-day period ended, I got a new job that is extremely creative and pays well. During the second round, I contracted to build a house, which, before I began this program, I'm sure would never have been possible. It was as if the pieces of the puzzle all fell into place....as if the universe was orchestrating everything to perfectly arrange for this to occur.During my third round, I got a refund for a used car that was a lemon-- one that I purchased from a dishonest car dealer 8 months ago. This was truly miraculous because, at first, the owner of the dealership lied and told me he would refund my money, only to deny that he had said that. I meditated on the Source within for several days and eventually I was effortlessly led to people who advocated on my behalf.Finally he relented, refunded me all of the money I put down on the car and all of the payments I had made over the past 8 months. Then I turned around and purchased a new car for less money down and a lower monthly payment. So,once again, the universe orchestrated all of the "details" effortlessly. The most important lesson that I have learned doing this plan, is perhaps that not only can I acquire material things, but that by constantly acknowledging the Power within to solve my problems, I can have true peace of mind. I highly recommend this plan for anyone who is disciplined and committed to changing his or her life and realizing a powerful relationship with God. It REALLY works.

                Book Description

                This lavishly illustrated book on the famous automobile manufacturer traces the Studebaker family from its arrival in America in 1736, to the beginnings of the wagon business under John M. Studebaker and his brothers in the nineteenth century, to the family’s entry into the automobile industry in 1902, to the last Studebaker automobile to roll off the assembly line in 1966.

                The book, however, is much more than the story of a family business; it is also, in microcosm, the story of the industrial development of America. The Studebakers had always been industrialists in the sense that they made their living by manufacturing things, albeit on a small scale. When the Industrial Revolution hit the country with full force, spurred on by the Civil War, it transformed America from a rural-agrarian society into an urban-industrial one. The fortunes of the Studebaker family were transformed with it.

                As the title suggests, the Studebaker story was mostly one of success. Studebaker wagons and carriages were long noted for their quality and popularity, and so, too, were Studebaker automobiles. The 1953 Starliner and the 1963 Avanti, designed under Raymond Loewy’s direction, are widely regarded as among the most innovative examples of American industrial design.

                The book deals in detail with the soaring prosperity of the company in the 1920s, the bankruptcy and miraculous recovery in the 1930s, the stupendous success of the early post-World War II period, and the eventual decline of the company’s fortunes in the mid-1950s. It describes the development of such famous models as the Lark, Avanti, and Gran Tourisimo Hawk, with special attention paid to the Avanti II, a surprisingly successful spinoff from the dying company that continued to be produced until 1991. The final chapter, on why Studebaker died, is tightly reasoned and more convincing than previous theories. Throughout, the author has used personal incident and characterization to bring to life the rich, tumultuous history of one of America’s longest enduring industrial empires.

                4 out of 5 stars Self-inflicted tragedy.......2002-06-29

                I was born in South Bend and my neighbors and relatives worked at Studebaker. This book is an excellent portrait of a company sliding inexorably downhill. Some of the factors that killed Studebaker were internal (labor relations, high unit costs, lack of due diligence about the company's condition in the Packard merger) and some were external (George Romney's refusal to form a fourth major out of American Motors). Discussed in detail are the beautiful cars Studebaker built and their skill in managing the difficult transition from wagonmakers to automakers. (Lincoln rode in a Studebaker carriage to Ford's theater) Bonsall doesn't hesitate to point out the flaws and missteps Studebaker made, though. This book is an affectionate portrait of an American company that was part of the landscape for a century and has now vanished without a trace. Recommended.

                4 out of 5 stars An interesting look...........2001-02-15

                "More Than They Promised" was an excellent read. It detailed the entire history of Studebaker from its beginnings as wagon makers to its entry into the manufacture of automobiles.

                Particularly interesting was the postwar era, especially after the disasterous merger with Packard. It SHOULD have worked, but in reality it was a total failure. The Sherwood Egbert era was very well detailed with his last-ditch efforts to save the automobile operations of what had by then become a conglomerate. At the time of their death, cars were but a small part of the empire.

                I am fascinated by the Studebaker story, although I was only 8 years old when the last Studebaker was produced. I have often wondered what would have happened had they survived. Would they have survived the increasingly oppressive government safety and emission requirements? Would they have survived the fuel crises of '73 and '79?

                I have had the pleasure of visiting the Studebaker National Museum in South Bend, IN. Having seen these beautiful cars, particularly the "Loewy coupes" of 1953-55, I couldn't help but draw the conclusion that Studebaker was too far ahead of their customers.

                Even if you are not a "car geek" as I am, you would likely enjoy reading "More Than They Promised".
