4 out of 5 stars Encouraging news for the future.......1999-04-13

I agree with Lee, this book is definitely a must read for anyone looking to the future and asking "what do I do now?" I like the way that the Tarlows have presented a variety of examples so that depending on how an individual learns (visual, metaphor, example, excercises), they will be able to "get it". I have been teaching in IT (Info Tech) for years and often had to bridge the gap between techies and non-techies. The Tarlows have made a great effort to reach a diverse group of readers who have different backgrounds yet all have the single desire to learn how to look differently at the world around us. Bravo!

Creativity and intuition is not easy to teach or encourage, they did a great job. For hard core techies... this is not a manual, you need to look inward, creatively and openly. Some of the material was not new to me either, but I'm enthusiastic to look differently at old problems. Overall I think there are many of us who will greatly benefit from this workbook.

2 out of 5 stars Maybe you'll get it?.......1998-12-31

Maybe I just not with it. But as a participant in the computer industry for 30 years I've had to rethink, relearn, every couple of years or so. This book just seems to be a rehash and thorough mix of cliches: speed of change, chaos theory, mind/body etc.

Where is the precision of thinking? Where is the clarity of concept? Where is the skillful use of language to communicate?

Take this example (bolded by the authors, presumably for importance and impact): "If we took someone from the middle ages and magically transported them to our time...the chemistry of modern culture would probably blow their nervous systems."

There's some good stuff in there, but well hidden by nonsense such as the above.

5 out of 5 stars Holds the keys to THRIVING in today's fast-paced culture!.......1998-11-07

It is incredibly rare for me to find a book which so perfectly addresses the challenges of thriving in today's fast-paced culture. The one constant we all share is change, and the pace is faster than ever. This accelerated tempo challenges our abilities to cope with the increasingly complex course of modern life.

Not only do the Tarlows provide background to help explain our perceptual predicaments, but they have provided a toolbox of well-crafted skills & perspectives we all must have to transcend these problems. But the Tarlows provide much more than that in the process. They infuse optimism for the future -- ne, a PASSION for building our own individual and collective futures.

My company, Lifescope, offers hundreds of books & tapes to help people improve their lives -- but Navigating the Future teaches ways to better use all those other books, in this unique period of human evolution. You may believe as I do, that our world's technological advances have exceeded our psychological maturity. Metaphorically, we have put chainsaws in the hands of babes. It is vital to our survival that we gain skills for catching up. This book provides a construct for learning those skills. I urge you, for all our sakes, to buy and read this book!

Billy Beane, general manager of MLB's Oakland A's and protagonist of Michael Lewis's Moneyball, had a problem: how to win in the Major Leagues with a budget that's smaller than that of nearly every other team. Conventional wisdom long held that big name, highly athletic hitters and young pitchers with rocket arms were the ticket to success. But Beane and his staff, buoyed by massive amounts of carefully interpreted statistical data, believed that wins could be had by more affordable methods such as hitters with high on-base percentage and pitchers who get lots of ground outs. Given this information and a tight budget, Beane defied tradition and his own scouting department to build winning teams of young affordable players and inexpensive castoff veterans.

Lewis was in the room with the A's top management as they spent the summer of 2002 adding and subtracting players and he provides outstanding play-by-play. In the June player draft, Beane acquired nearly every prospect he coveted (few of whom were coveted by other teams) and at the July trading deadline he engaged in a tense battle of nerves to acquire a lefty reliever. Besides being one of the most insider accounts ever written about baseball, Moneyball is populated with fascinating characters. We meet Jeremy Brown, an overweight college catcher who most teams project to be a 15th round draft pick (Beane takes him in the first). Sidearm pitcher Chad Bradford is plucked from the White Sox triple-A club to be a key set-up man and catcher Scott Hatteberg is rebuilt as a first baseman. But the most interesting character is Beane himself. A speedy athletic can't-miss prospect who somehow missed, Beane reinvents himself as a front-office guru, relying on players completely unlike, say, Billy Beane. Lewis, one of the top nonfiction writers of his era (Liar's Poker, The New New Thing), offers highly accessible explanations of baseball stats and his roadmap of Beane's economic approach makes Moneyball an appealing reading experience for business people and sports fans alike. --John Moe

Book Description

"One of the best baseball—and management—books out....Deserves a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame."—Forbes

Moneyball is a quest for the secret of success in baseball. Following the low-budget Oakland Athletics, their larger-than-life general manger, Billy Beane, and the strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts, Michael Lewis has written not only "the single most influential baseball book ever" (Rob Neyer, Slate) but also what "may be the best book ever written on business" (Weekly Standard).

I wrote this book because I fell in love with a story. The story concerned a small group of undervalued professional baseball players and executives, many of whom had been rejected as unfit for the big leagues, who had turned themselves into one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. But the idea for the book came well before I had good reason to write it—before I had a story to fall in love with. It began, really, with an innocent question: how did one of the poorest teams in baseball, the Oakland Athletics, win so many games?

With these words Michael Lewis launches us into the funniest, smartest, and most contrarian book since, well, since Liar's Poker. Moneyball is a quest for something as elusive as the Holy Grail, something that money apparently can't buy: the secret of success in baseball. The logical places to look would be the front offices of major league teams, and the dugouts, perhaps even in the minds of the players themselves. Lewis mines all these possibilities—his intimate and original portraits of big league ballplayers are alone worth the price of admission—but the real jackpot is a cache of numbers—numbers!—collected over the years by a strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts: software engineers, statisticians, Wall Street analysts, lawyers and physics professors.

What these geek numbers show—no, prove—is that the traditional yardsticks of success for players and teams are fatally flawed. Even the box score misleads us by ignoring the crucial importance of the humble base-on-balls. This information has been around for years, and nobody inside Major League Baseball paid it any mind. And then came Billy Beane, General Manager of the Oakland Athletics.

Billy paid attention to those numbers —with the second lowest payroll in baseball at his disposal he had to—and this book records his astonishing experiment in finding and fielding a team that nobody else wanted. Moneyball is a roller coaster ride: before the 2002 season opens, Oakland must relinquish its three most prominent (and expensive) players, is written off by just about everyone, and then comes roaring back to challenge the American League record for consecutive wins.

In a narrative full of fabulous characters and brilliant excursions into the unexpected, Michael Lewis shows us how and why the new baseball knowledge works. He also sets up a sly and hilarious morality tale: Big Money, like Goliath, is always supposed to win...how can we not cheer for David?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Moneyball as antidote to stupidity.......2007-10-05

Read Michael Lewis' Moneyball before the playoffs get too far along. As Lewis quotes someone in the book "Up till I was 14 years old, everything I learned about baseball came from broadcasters. And it was all b------t!" So before Joe Morgan et al start waxing eloquently about "manufacturing runs, etc." (which means abandoning the game that got you to the playoffs), you better immunize yourself with this book. It's simply the best baseball book ever.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Insight.......2007-10-03

Provides intriguing insight into the real skills that are required by a major leaguer and those coaching decisions that do and don't make sense.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Baseball Fans.......2007-09-28

Anyone who considers themselves a die-hard baseball fan must read this book.... but you knew that already.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book for every level of baseball fan.......2007-09-27

First off, this is not a book by Billy Beane, or anyone in the Oakland Athletics organization. This is a look at the use of Sabermetrics in baseball, originally thought up by Bill James, and how it can be used to help evaluate talent, and give you an edge in an unfair game, as the title states.

Reading this book, whether you are a casual or avid baseball fan, gives you a whole new look at the game of baseball, the way it is played, and the way teams are run. It breaks away from the norm, and shows that it is not the size of the payroll you have on your team, but how you use the money you have. Also, it is set a few years back, and it mentions some of the players that were scouted and drafted by Beane and his staff. It is nice now to read it, and see how these players have panned out.

Again, great book, flows very well, and I would recommend that if you are even a little interested, you pick this book up in a second.

5 out of 5 stars Legendary.......2007-09-17

Moneyball changed the face of professional baseball and pro sports in general. It is a very compelling portrait of A's general manager Billy Beane and how he explits market inefficiencies to create a winning baseball team, despite having a small payroll. Highly recommended to all readers.

3 out of 5 stars Don't get me started on this boring topic!!!!.......2002-03-31

                        A) Why is there a whole law class on cashing checks? B) Why is the subject so convoluted and obnoxious??? This Gilberts was useful in that it gave diagrams and drawings to illustrate points. The first two chapters were helpful and (somewhat) easy to understand. The later chapters on bank deposits and electronic banking give light to the future of this subject (and future bar exam questions). However, the longest chapter, "Liability of the Parties" was the most confusing. It should have had more diagrams and would have been better as two chapters. But this Gilbert's help me understand this nefarious topic more than any other legal aid.

5 out of 5 stars Saved me on the exam.......2006-05-05

These tapes saved me in my Payments class, and they were basically all I needed to know to do well on the exam. Whaley also has a good sense of humor. The black letter law is still current on these tapes as of 2006 as far as I can tell.

2 out of 5 stars Too few tapes for such a long subject.......2002-05-23

The professor giving this lecture freely admits that if you don't study CP in a law class or for the bar, you will never get it in practice. Still, this tape series has only 3 tapes when your typical sum & substance subject has between 4 and 6. The professor crams cp rules into 3 tapes sides and article 4 payment rules in the last 3 sides. These tapes didn't become useful until I had read and made flash cards from his Gilberts law summary text. I can't believe the most difficult bar subject has so few study aids out there. This is very frustrating. I can't even say Whaley did a bad job here; it's just that these tapes alone won't do it.

                            Book Description

Whaley's High Court Case Summaries on Commercial Law, 8th contain well-prepared briefs for each major case in Whaley's casebook on Commercial Law. High Court briefs are written to present the essential facts, issue, decision and rationale for each case in a clear, concise manner. While prepared briefs can never substitute for the insight gained by actually reading a case, these briefs will help readers to identify, understand, and absorb the core, take away, knowledge from each case. Moreover, these briefs are followed by a useful legal analysis, which provides extra tips and contextual background about each case, connecting the case to the broader concepts being developed throughout the casebook. This book also supplies case vocabulary, which defines new or unusual legal words found throughout the cases. Finally, to enhance the reader's recall, there is a corresponding memory graphic for each brief that portrays an entertaining visual representation of the relevant facts or law of the case.

This video like many of the other sum and substances series gives you the basics of the law in this area(like a review. This can't help you if you have not understood the or read any of the cases. The man's voice on this is choppy, defintely not as smooth as some of the other speakers. However, he still gets his point across.
