For those who value correct grammar, Anne Stilman has written the definitive guide. She holds you to her high grammatical standards, and clearly explains how to follow the rules. There are chapters on "Spelling," "Punctuation," "Grammar," and "Style," and Stilman patiently elucidates the rules of colons, brackets, and plural formations, while gracefully tackling the common misuses of "lie" versus "lay." Her illustrative examples bring the stickiest lessons home. Quoting from Woody Allen, Vikram Seth, Mark Twain, and other likable authors, issues of pronoun choice, parallelism, and ellipses come clear. Although Stilman cuts no slack on errors, she concedes that grammar evolves. While she suggests that you avoid splitting infinitives, she also believes you shouldn't introduce excessive awkwardness merely to conform to a rule that was dogmatically decreed years ago for no particular reasons of clarity or merit.

works well in tight spots.

5 out of 5 stars This book mostly delivers what it promises........2007-03-28

I bought this book because I was looking for a guide to grammar and some of its trickier aspects. This book is direct and fairly thorough. It addresses many of the problems that people have with spelling, pronoun-antecedent agreement, punctuation use, etc. The instruction is concise and nearly always contains both incorrect examples and corrected examples of the particular topics. Some topics even include exercises to test the reader's knowledge.

I would have liked to have seen more exercises, but the book would serve its intended purpose just as well if it had no exercises at all.

This is a great book for brushing up on some of the finer points of grammar.

I work as an editor-in-chief for a website. When I was first hired, I bought this book as a reference for creating and defining editorial standards for the website.

The book is informative, and also incredibly interesting! I'm a huge lover of words and writing, and for me, the background of certain rules were a great added touch.

The book is thorough; detailed; well-thought out and presented. I use it weekly; sometimes daily.

Extremely focused and accessible. Succinct and true to its title ("essentials"); does not try cover too much and thereby lose potency.

Exercises are well designed: consecutive sentences build on one another and form a narrative (vs. unrelated, unconnected sentences). Within exercises correct sentences are interspersed with incorrect, keeping students on their toes. Many exercise sentences are taken from authentic sources.

Lessons are illustrated clearly with target and non-target forms side by side for easy comparison. Good sentence level and paragraph level variation.

It is ESSENTIAL reference material for anyone who wants to write CORRECTLY and USE the English language correctly. Your writing will improve, and a great side effect is that everyone will think you are incredibly smart! Get and USE this book! Those of us who cringe at the continuous abuse of the English language will thank you!

I am a technical writer with a Bachelors degree in English. I picked up this book in college, and I still use it to this day. Many grammars are lengthy and exhaustive, but this book's light weight and logical break-down of grammar make it the ultimate reference. Whether you are a struggling student, or a professional writer, you need this reference on your bookshelf.

A workbook is also available, which follows this reference to the letter.

5 out of 5 stars The Spelling Dilemma.......2000-07-28

Wilde's book is an excellent resource for teachers that are looking for a whole language approach for spelling and phonics. Being a teacher, we are constantly looking for new and inventive approaches in our classroom. Similarily, we all have issues with district curriculum, principals, colleagues, etc... that force us to adhere to "what everyone else is doing." Well, who says that everyone else is right or is knowledgable with the resources that are available? From this book, the reader is able to absorb opposing methods of giving the dreaded spelling test on Fridays. Wilde discusses different approaches in preparing our students for spelling and phonics. There are alternatives to those workbook pages. We want to remember that our students are our best resource and we need to fulfill the needs that they have. Wilde is able to give definitive ways to approach spelling. For example, we can allow students to choose their own spelling words based on their individual needs. We all know that spelling words in the workbooks are not based on individual needs. This is an issue that is addressed by Wilde. Spelling and punctuation, along with phonics, need to be taught within our classroom and across the curriculum, not in an isolated fashion. Students learn by actually doing the reading and writing--not by studying spelling words that they will probably never encounter again. Wilde suggests that approaches that are beneficial allow students to grow as readers and writers. Another professional book that is helpful is Bolton and Snowball's Teaching Spelling: A Practical Resource. Also, Lucy Calkins discusses spelling and techniques for teaching spelling in the book The Art of Teaching Writing.

2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money! .......2005-03-17

This book was a disappointment! It doesn't tell you much that you don't already know, assuming you have a job and are out of your parents' house. I would have learned from it when I was 16, but having already been on my own for 7 years it was a complete waste of time and money. The unfortunate part is that there are a lot of references to drinking and a few about divorce, so it's not even suitable for teenagers. I didn't expect expert advice, but I was expecting some tips and strategies. The best advice I learned from the book...save your money and don't buy it!

                  Book Description

Access to credit is an important means of providing people with the opportunity to make a better life for themselves. Loans are essential for most people who want to purchase a home, start a business, pay for college, or weather a spell of unemployment. Yet many people in poor and minority communities—regardless of their creditworthiness—find credit hard to come by, making the climb out of poverty extremely difficult. How dire are the lending markets in these communities and what can be done to improve access to credit for disadvantaged groups? In "Credit Markets for the Poor," editors Patrick Bolton and Howard Rosenthal and an expert team of economists, political scientists, and legal and business scholars tackle these questions with shrewd analysis and a wealth of empirical data.

"Credit Markets for the Poor" opens by examining what credit options are available to poor households. Economist John Caskey profiles how weak credit options force many working families into a disastrous cycle of short-term, high interest loans in order to sustain themselves between paychecks. Löic Sadoulet explores the reasons that community lending organizations, which have been so successful in developing countries, have failed in more advanced economies. He argues the obstacles that have inhibited community lending groups in industrialized countries—such as a lack of institutional credibility and the high cost of establishing lending networks—can be overcome if banks facilitate the community lending process and establish a system of repayment insurance. "Credit Markets for the Poor" also examines how legal institutions affect the ability of the poor to borrow. Daniela Fabbri and Mario Padula argue that well-meaning provisions making it more difficult for lenders to collect on defaulted loans are actually doing a disservice to the poor in credit markets. They find that in areas with lax legal enforcement of debt agreements, credit markets for the poor are underdeveloped because lenders are unwilling to take risks on issuing credit or will do so only at exorbitant interest rates. Timothy Bates looks at programs that facilitate small-business development and finds that they have done little to reduce poverty. He argues that subsidized business creation programs may lure inexperienced households into entrepreneurship in areas where little profitable investment is possible, hence setting them up for failure.

With clarity and insightful analysis, "Credit Markets for the Poor" demonstrates how weak credit markets are impeding the social and economic mobility of the needy. By detailing the many disadvantages that impoverished people face when seeking to borrow, this important new volume highlights a significant national problem and offers solutions for the future.

As a debt counselor, most of my day is spent relating with and trying to assist those in debt. This book has been invaluable to my own education and the education of my clients. I am indebted to Feinberg for such a well written "insider's view" of the credit industry.

In my quest for the Holy Grail of books about personal debt and financial mastery, this book is a real treasure!
With a sharp sense of humour and a willingness to explore not just the practical but psychological aspects of the debt culture and "perma-debt" -- his term for those of us who get into endless credit card slavery -- this book reads almost as well as the mystery thriller I devoured last weekend.
And no, I'm not being cut into the profits in exchange for this gushing review.
