3 out of 5 stars Worthwhile reading.......2006-01-30

This was a very interesting approach to simplifying one's life. There were a few concepts I'll be able to incorporate into my own life, but I found most of it to be good in theory and not very adaptable to my personal situation and lifestyle.

3 out of 5 stars Useful tool in time management; not technology management.......2005-05-27

Winston's plan helps people deal with a growing list of priorities and an inflexible time frame. She does not address the glut of technology- related information that overwhelms people today or fundamental issues regarding directions and use of office and household technology.

5 out of 5 stars Useful book that will help you restructure your life.......2002-03-25

Heard the abridged version of GETTING OUT FROM UNDER by
best-selling organizational guru Stephanie Winston . . . it was so
good that I now want to go back and get the book so I can read
all her practical ideas . . . I've enjoyed Winston before (her GETTING
ORGANIZED is considered a classic in the field) . . . this latest
effort switches her from writing about "things" to helping you
restructure your life to meet the conflicting demands on both
your time and energy.

I appreciated the fact that she reminded me about the constant
need to TRAF; i.e., when you have paper, you can only toss it,
refer it to somebody else, , act on it or file it . . . this, of course,
is often easier said than done . . . but I shall try to do so! . . . in
addition, i appreciated being introduced to her BOAT acronym
for breaking very big life goals into a system of organized
tasks . . . all you need to do is brainstorm what needs to
be done, organize a strategy for getting it done, add tasks to
your daily list to get it done, and then time spread these tasks.

4 out of 5 stars Another winner from the Organization Queen Stephanie Winston.......2001-02-01

I must have every book Winston has written, and I've definitely profited by them.

This book is a little harder to grasp because (1) you are not moving THINGS but ordering your TIME and (2) you don't always have control over other people as you would your filing cabinet and closets. Winston does deal with time robbers and emergencies--which are some of those uncontrollable things, and give good hints for organizing your day.

I think it is a bit ambitious to include job changing in such a book , but since this is a task that you must make time for and that many people find hard to schedule because of inertia or unwillingness or the unpleasantness of getting going on a job search, I suppose it is just as well that this topic is covered. But for job hunting, you'd probably need a more specific book.

4 out of 5 stars An Original Approach to Defining Priorities.......2000-04-19

Winston dealt with the external clutter in our lives in her first few books. In this book she effectively tackles the internal clutter which leaves us feeling scattered and unfulfilled. She does this by performing "time triage" in the three main sections of the book. First, she deals with emergency situations in people's schedules, citing examples from her clients and offering suggestions and strategies on how to add time to your day immediately. Then she moves on to "Examine Your Personal Universe" and guides you through creating a solar system technique to help clarify what's really important in your life. Finally, she reveals methods for acting on what you learned about yourself in the solar system exercise. The book is clear and well-written. So why just 4 stars? Perhaps too much ground is covered too quickly, from cooperative housing to changing jobs, but her ideas are a good launching pad for effecting life changes. I needed more help with basic time robbers and did not get enough help there, but the exercises in values clarification were quite helpful. The book does live up to its subtitle: "Redefining Your Priorities in an Overwhelming World."

          Book Description

Josef and Karel Capek were the best known literary figures of liberated Czechoslovakia after 1918. Josef won a considerable reputation as a painter of the Cubist school, later developing his own playful primitive style. He collaborated with his brother in composing sketches, stories, and plays, as well as writing two short novels of his own and critical essays in which he defended the art of the unconscious, of children, and of savages. Following Hitler's invasion of 1939, Josef Capek was sent to a German concentration camp. He died at Belsen in April 1945. Karel Capek became a journalist and for a time stage manager of the theatre in Vinohrady. Though a writer of novels, visionary romances, travel books, stories , and essays, Karel is best known for his plays. His last plays, written just before the entry of Hitler into Czechoslovakia, deal with the rise of dictatorship and the terrible consequences of war. Karel Capek died on Christmas day, 1938. After the success of R.U.R. (Rossums' Universal Robots, 1920) seen in London in 1923, the brothers collaborated in their best-known work, The Insect Play (1921). Both plays are satires depicting the horrors of a regimented technical world and the terrible end of the populace if they fail to rise against their oppressors. They reflect the world in which the Capeks lived and give a commentary on its grosser follies.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful Plays That Have Aged Well.......2004-06-30

Anyone who grew up immersed in science fiction (as I did) has likely heard of the play R.U.R. This play, written by a pair of Czech brothers, gave us the word and the concept of "robot." (R.U.R. stands for Rossum's Universal Robots.) It is unfortunate, however, that more people haven't read this play because it is very good.

Written in the intellectual ferment between the world wars, R.U.R. tells the story of a world where mechanical robots (the Czech word for "worker") are taking the place of human workers. Though the human manufacturers of the robots all seem to have noble intentions (apart from the desire to get rich), things get out of hand when the robots revolt against their human masters and destroy the human race. The play ends with the hope for reinvention of the human race through the robots.

Though first produced in the 1920's, it is amazing how little this play has become dated. There is an obvious formalism in the dialogue which places it in its period but the social themes and commentary remain pertinent for a modern audience. The vision Capek had which is so predictive of our modern relationship with science and invention is truly amazing. This is a play I would love to see produced.

Allegorical and satirical, The Insect Play has also aged well though its lack of conflict makes it a lesser experience than R.U.R.; however, with its flighty "butterflies," miserly "beetles" and war-like "ants," The Insect Play is another bit of clever social commentary.

4 out of 5 stars Historically brilliant, literarily flawed.......1999-07-08

R.U.R. is an immensely important book for its contributions to our language and our perception. Equally, it is excellent commentary on the mechanization of work, and the quest to turn people into simple, perfect machines.

Nonetheless, this translation falls short as literature. Devoid of irony and wit, and possessing only a simple, transparent plot, R.U.R. does not equal the standard set by Capek himself with "War with the Newts."

          5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......1998-12-22

In the play RUR, the brothers Capek coined the word Robot as meaning mechanical man for the first time. The play probes the ethical issues of humaniod robots and what constitutes humanity, life and the human soul and spirit. Written just before WWII the Insect Play is a wonderful fantasy full of political allegory and social commentary. It is important to keep in mind when reading the Insect Play that Josef Capek died in a Nazi concentration camp.

                            Book Description

This multi-disciplinary book provides insight in how to establish consumer trust in electronic commerce. It first goes into detail on a broad variety of consumer trust criteria with regard to the security and reliability of electronic consumer transactions, what information must be provided to consumers, how to create a legally binding contract online, confidence in electronic payments, the resolution of disputes, what law applies to the electronic consumer contract, which body is entitled to settle the dispute and personal data protection. By means of these criteria it is assessed into what extent consumer trust is ensured by the application of a public-key infrastructure, which supports cryptographic services such as electronic signatures and encryption. An assessment is also made on the European Union cryptography policy and the European Union policy on consumer protection in electronic commerce. In addition, a wide range of co-regulation and self-regulation initiatives within the European Union and Northern America are assessed. Finally, this book provides a consumer trust framework which learns that various ingredients at different levels are required to build consumer trust in electronic commerce. As such, it clarifies the roles and responsibilities of government, industry and consumer organisations, businesses, as well as consumers themselves.

                              Book Description

A lack of trust in online-transactions has been described as one of the most important obstacles for the development of e-business. Despite numerous activities in the fields of law and security, users have not yet gained the trust necessary for conducting e-business. This requires a new approach which is able to explain the importance and function of trust in the digital world. This book presents a new model of digital trust that is complemented by articles on law, security, business models and trust building signals. The book is published in a mixed German/English edition and is the first international reader covering trust and e-business from a multi-disciplinary approach.

                                Book Description

The rise of the internet as a global trading platform has focused increased attention on trust in business relations. Ebay is just one example of the thousands of online auctions and exchanges that facilitate transactions among parties who may not be able to directly communicate. In these exchanges, trust is facilitated through the use of rating systems. Research indicates that trust is positively related to consumer willingness to pay higher prices and disclose information. This pioneering study shows that in addition to trust, a value congruence strategy can be employed to charge higher prices and increase disclosure of personal information. Value congruence reflects shared beliefs between the firm and the consumer. In fact, the author finds that value congruence is more powerful than trust in fostering these desired outcomes. Value Congruence and Trust Online is must reading for any business scholar or executive concerned with pricing, privacy issues, and marketing strategy online. Marketing academics will also find great value in the rigorous and detailed method and model employed. The results are a significant advance in our understanding of how to effectively market online.

The aim of the authors of this paper was to identify areas that would aid in developing a better understanding of the dynamics of a customer's decision to shop online. To accomplish this, a review of the empirical studies on the antecedents of online shopping was performed. From an extensive literature search, a total of 45 relevant articles were identified. The factors that have been investigated in these studies were classified according to their similarity and patterns of their findings were identified and analyzed.
