Writing Training Materials That Work: How to Train Anyone to Do Anything
ASIN: 0970145403 |
Book Description
The eight-step strategy presented in this book takes the mystery out of writing effective training courses. Practical templates, checklists, assessments, and examples streamline your effort and eliminate writer's block. You'll discover how to make the most of limited time, money, and human resources to:
Develop training lessons that make a difference.
Customize off-the-shelf training to meet the needs of your target audience.
Repurpose existing documentation.
Globalize your training for culturally diverse learners or tailor lessons to meet specific needs of a limited audience.
Recognize dead-end paths that can undermine the success of your project.
Incorporate ready-to-use CGI, Java, and HTML scripts into lessons. Learn when to use them, where to find download sites, and how to tailor them to your training objectives and learners.
This systematic approach has helped thousands of writers like you create training programs that deliver what they promise. In just hours, you can learn techniques and time-savers that others have learned only through hard-won experience and costly mistakes.
Keep this book handy. You'll reach for it often for real-world advice about every phase of your project from initial planning to troubleshooting. Better than a mentor, it's a must-have for every successful training or user-education professional.
Customer Reviews:
Good for content planning, not for content writing.......2006-11-21
This is one of the best books of those that help you determine what should be included in your training course - to plan objectives and then break it down into the detail. It also covers how to test the effectiveness of the course. However, it does not give any information at all about what a course module should contain or how to write it.
My goal was to write a training course for a software program. So, for the most part I knew what the outline of the course should be. I needed to know how to introduce the subject, how much to include in the single module, what exactly to do and say. For this, the book would get a zero.
Very good for it's purpose but I felt a review was needed to point out what that was.
Terrific for Planning from the Ground Up!.......2004-04-22
I just can't say enough about this book. I am developing a training program for the first time and it has added outstanding depth to my process. It is simple to use. If you go step by step everything just seems to fall in to place.
It is a life saver!
Very applicable.......2002-04-04
I read this book in 5 hours. After that, I had all the tools I needed to start developing a training course for a subject matter I still knew little about. Great book for someone who has a short time to develop a training course. Great reference for anyone who needs new approaches to their training development.

Book Description
With a fresh approach to business and technical writing, Miverva Neiditz covers topics normally dealt with separately, such as: style; structure; logical thinking; persuasion; creative thinking; international and intercultural communication.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent but needs updating.......2006-12-01
I taught business writing in the late 1990s and used this as a textbook in my classes. I hope Irwin (or someone) publishes an updated version. The 1994 edition treats email as if it is a new thing, uses some outdated terminology, etc. But the general principles taught by the book remain as relevant as ever. The before/after examples are particularly helpful. Neiditz reduces business writing (indeed, clear communication in general) to its essentials. The book teaches in 200 pages what other books teach in twice that. I hope this excellent volume is updated and not forgotten.

Book Description
T8784-5, 0-205-28784-0, Sammons, Martha C. (Wright State University), THE INTERNET WRITER'S HANDBOOK, 5.5 x 8.5, paperbound, 224 pp., $22.00 K, HA02 * /
The Internet Writer's Handbook is an easily accessible, vital reference tool in the age of electronic communication: it teaches how to write well on-line. Too often, writers attempt to create Web pages by simply using the same techniques they use for print documents; The Internet Writer's Handbook offers those writers specific advice on writing and designing on-line hypertext documents. In addition to entries on HTML elements, researching on the Internet, e-mail style, and other such contemporary topics, the Handbook places unique emphasis on online writing techniques.
KEY FEATURES: The book includes up-to-the-minute research on online help, hypertext, Web page design, concise writing techniques, usability testing, interface design, and Web sites. Reflecting the author's extensive experience as a consultant in business and technical writing, this handbook will appeal to anyone who needs help in creating a Web page.
This book is useful for any technical, business, or professional writing for the Internet.
Customer Reviews:
outdated and redundant information.......2004-01-01
The: Web Page Design, Web Page Elements and Navigation sections are *outdated*. This book was created in 1999 and there has been many advancements and corrections in this field.
The: Web Page Style, Editing and Web Page Writing Techniques sections could be great for beginner writers but for those who thought they would get a whole bunch of nuggets about writing for the web, will be sadly disappointed. At minimum, half a handful of nuggets can be gotten while sifting through the outdated and redundant information.
The: Types of Web Writing section was probably *most useful* to me and I wasn't really wanting information about that in the first place.
The book is also hard-to-read, even though it attempts at making it easy-to-read. Everything is sort of "clumped" together with too many icons, too much in the legend and not enough "white space" to follow the information coherently.
In 1999, I could see this book being a major hit... combining web page design and writing skills but the heavy price tag of the book today isn't merited.
If you get it, skip the stuff about web design. Better yet, pick up a copy at your local library to see what I'm talking about and then make your decision from there.
In my opinion, this isn't a book to keep in your private library collection!
A Somewhat Useful Book for Beginning Writers.......2001-04-22
The Internet Writer's Handbook is just that--a handbook. As such, it's not something you'll be reading or spending much time with. But that's a good thing, because this rather expensive book is very cheaply made and violates every rule of page layout its author attempts to teach. Pages are so busy and painful to look at that I'm rarely tempted to pick it up. The information is sound but basic. Much of it is typical freshman comp handbook stuff in Web-style disguise. The high price of this book makes even its good points sting a little. Bottom line: If I could have seen The Internet Writer's Handbook before I bought it, I wouldn't have considered it--especially at [the price] plus shipping.
No sifting required: Chock full of gold nuggets of knowledge.......2000-04-15
This is an AWESOME book! Very well organized. It can be read word-for-word cover-to-cover OR reviewed quickly for the major points! The information is very accessible because of the presentation: lots of bulleted lists, short paragraphs, and special tips. Also, excellent examples (of both stellar and regretable writing) are given throughout the book. This book is a success due to the excellent oranization and presentation, AND the broad scope of information offered (e.g., three chapters on different aspects of writing for the Web, a chapter on editing Web sites, chapters on Web page design and navigation, and more)!
As a novice in the subject of writing for the Web, I've found this an excellent "How to" book. I'm an editor of trade books and other publications, but am learning about writing for the Web. So far, this has been the most helpful book because of the accessibility of the information (not buried in long, narrative chapters).
Another recommendation: I recommend "Writing for New Media" (1998). In "Writing for New Media," authors Bonime and Pohlmann discuss writing for interactive media, which includes interactive thinking, interactive writing (instead of linear writing), and aspects of interactive storytelling.
Great combination of web style guidelines and writing style.......2000-02-20
I've read many books regarding web design and writing for online media. This book combines some knowledge you'd get from The Chicago Manual of Style, with some of the web info you'd get from The Yale Web Style Guide. Great mix of both subjects, in a a format that makes for easy reading. You need this book if you're web mastering and writing the content for your site.

Book Description
The inspiring story of one woman's escape from years of indebtedness to achieve financial, emotional, and spiritual solvency.
In this practical and spiritual guide to managing debt by coming to grips with its underlying causes. Margaret St. John unravels the cord that keeps debtors shackled not only to their skyrocketing debt but also to their unaffordable illusions. She demonstrates that debting is not ultimately about money; rather its cause is misguided beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that foster a sense of restriction and lack that create a feeling of never having enough.
Customer Reviews:
Freed by this Book.......2001-03-02
To the extent that this gem of a book demonstrates how the way we handle money is a metaphor for much else that ails us, it helped me face and deal with an array of things that were dysfunctional in my life - not just my indebtedness. Written in a style that's both personal and universal, Margaret St. John's book has a formula that works.
Free At Last!.......2001-02-03
This gem is a do-it-yourself guide to the solvency we all desire. The practical exercises are fun to do, and they hold the key to opening those doors of awareness as to why we do the things we do.... More than just a "how to manage your money" treatise, this book delves much more deeply into the beliefs that keep us indebted monetarily and otherwise. Excellently written, with plenty of anecdotes and personal experiences, I found it insightful and empowering. This book comes from the heart - Ms St. John has suffered through and found solutions to problems more common than most would care to admit. Thanks so much for sharing.
Do Yourself a Favor............2000-08-05
....and read this book! Written with the understanding and compassion which comes only from experience and hard work, Margaret St. John will help those willing to gain insight into the reasons they suffer with debt. The reader will empathize with people who reacted to early childhood circumstances by becoming adult debtors, and underacheivers. I learned the reasons we undermine our foundations with needless debt, and how best to allocate what we earn. The method used is practical and has helped many who thought there was no hope. This book helps even those of us who have no debt, but who, by mismanagement have wasted money we may need in time. Buying this book is a wise investment.
Release from Debtor's Prison.......2000-05-17
This book takes a hard hitting approach to debt. While reading the book, I quickly discovered it wasn't about the money. Wow! What a revelation. This book has helped me to "peel away the layers of the onion" and discover the reasoning behind my debting. It even inspired me to go to my first Debtor's Anonymous meeting. Today, I'm much closer to becoming debt free. The future is much brighter now that I don't debt one day at a time. Thanks, Margaret!

Book Description
• Choice 1988 Outstanding Academic Book
• Named one of the Best Business Books of 1988 by USA Today
A veteran reporter of American labor analyzes the spectacular and tragic collapse of the steel industry in the 1980s. John Hoerr’s account of these events stretches from the industrywide barganing failures of 1982 to the crippling work stoppage at USX (U.S. Steel) in 1986-87. He interviewed scores of steelworkers, company managers at all levels, and union officials, and was present at many of the crucial events he describes. Using historical flashbacks to the origins of the steel industry, particularly in the Monongahela Valley of southwestern Pennsylvania, he shows how an obsolete and adversarial relationship between management and labor made it impossible for the industry to adapt to shattering changes in the global economy.
Customer Reviews:
Thank you!.......2005-08-05
My dad - who died a couple of years ago - published this book. He was very proud of it, and I think he would have been very pleased to see that Amazon customers are responding to it favorably.
Sad, true, and cautionary.......2001-08-14
I read this years ago, and I thought it was an excellent analysis of the collapse of the steel industry in Pittsburgh, filled with compelling tales of individual people.
The books feels like a Greek tragedy, in which the protagonists are doomed to a slow slide towards the edge of a cliff. Institutionalized conflict overcomes the efforts of people from both labor and maangement to halt, or at least slow the inevitable slide.
For people who think that the current dot.com crash is a serious downturn, this book offers a very good counter-perspective. When an area loses 100K jobs in 10 years, and whole towns essentially close, that's a *real* downturn.
On the other hand, there's always hope. Pittsburgh has bounced back, and has a much more diversified economy. The last time I visited, I could see the sky, which was more difficult in the steel days. To grasp those days, either see the early Tom Cruise movie "All The Right Moves", or for depth, read this book.
good book.......1999-07-21
This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn about what went wrong in this basic industry. Not only a study of the collapse of the steel industry in the Mon Valley, the book is also a study of the pain of postindustrialization that swept the country in the 1980's. Esentially, the author is writing about a national trend, but focuses on the Pittsburgh area, which is really a microcosm. It is also a good look at what happens when unions and management can't get their acts together.
