A lot of the "Repair Your Own Credit" books out there are not very helpful. Some of them tell you nothing you didn't already know... Not this one! This is one of the more useful Credit Advice books available on the market. It gives the background of several fraudulant "Credit Repair" firms, info on how to spot a scam, inside look on how the credit bureaus work, and things you can do to correct and "polish" your credit. I would recommend this book to anyone before paying a credit repair/credit counseling company.

Good - tells you how to show for credit by being professional, researching and asking the right questions and starting at the local level.

Bad - Incorrect material. 1- The FTC can represent an individual consumer in litigation. 2- Credit bureaus are not obligated to honor a consumer's request to be removed from pre-approved lists. 3 - credit bureaus score credit files. 4 - Removal of a tax lien cannot be reinserted. 5 - Bounced checks do not appear on credit reports. All of this is wrong and the list goes on. Too many errors to list here.

Ugly - the book accuses credit repair companies of taking advantage of consumers ignorance but this book is also advancing at the expense of consumers lack of understanding or knowledge by providing erroneous information to the masses.

More time should have been spent researching the facts.

This is the third book by Arnold S. Goldstein I have purchased. This book is labeled EZ for a reason, the content is very easy to understand. I would recommend his older book The Guarenteed Credit guide also as it has a little more indepth content.

I was skeptical when i purchased this book because i have the worse credit. But after i followed the easy step guides to repairing my credit it worked. Only bad thing is its a big 3 to six month process depending on all the dings on your credit report. Now i have A1 perfect credit and get approved for credit cards with out any problems. I think those companies on the internet that offer credit repair for a FEE are using the same book. basically. Because this book has all the forms and letters you need.

I read the book from cover to cover and found some useful information that actually worked, but the overall context of the book would be hard even for a lawyer to understand. Most of the procedures that are explained are outdated and don't work.

I'm puzzled about this material and the author. Hammond has written severeal books about how to get bad things off of credit reports and fix credit, often times citing illegal tactics. However, in this book he attempts to educate readers about credit repair scams; some of the scams and illegal practices he was previously an advocate of. Ok about the book. It will give readers and idea of how the credit reporting system works and relates to consumers. There is a lot of talk about Experian and not enough about the other two agencies. Apparently the author was involved in litigation with Experian. The material is often repetitive making it redudant. The chapters are too short and leave the reader wanting more thorough explanations of the topics (for example: credit scoring, identity theft and credit repair) Also, his interpretation of how creditors interpret credit inquiries and other data is incorrect. The book suggest that too many inquiries = bad risk. This isn't true b/c inquiries have the least impact on FICO scores.He also notes that a person's spouse's name appears on his credit report along with his number of dependents and marrital status - All of which are not true. Summary - More emphasis should have been placed on the accuracy of the data outlined in this book but it's a pretty good start for beginners. I'd recommend The Insider's Guide to Credit Repair by K E Varner for the most up-to-date and accurate information about credit repair, id theft, and scoring.

An good choice for a basic understanding to fix your credit........2005-01-02

I read the book and have used some of the principles it presented. For the most part I thought the book brought together a fair amount of information for a novice to use in repairing ones credit.

It by all means is not the total repair guide but it really is designed for easy to understand reading and that is just what it presents and does an good job.

If I were the professional that was looking for a more comprehensive look into advanced tactics, then this book is not for you.

If you want to improve your score or fix some nagging but easier credit issues then this book works.

Disappointing! I have seen better........2001-05-28

As a person who knows the credit repair industry traits & practices, I am sorry to inform you this book falls short of helping any reader wanting to repair their own credit. I usally like to read 2 books a year on credit repair. I do this so I can check out the advice and knowledge of others in the credit industry. If you're looking for a book to assist you in repairing your credit,LOOK ELSEWHERE! This book gives the reader very basic information, this is information the reader probably already knows or that could be obtained from the federal trades commission or any of the 3 credit reporting agencies for FREE. I really got a good laugh when I saw chapter 5 "The Importance of Good Credit". I said to myself, "Why waste a chapter on this subject?" Anyone buying this book, or for that matter any book on the subject credit repair, is well aware of the importance of good credit!

Let's move to chapter 7 titled "Repairing Your Credit Step-by-Step". This chapter only has 12 pages.The first 7 pages are how to repair your credit and the next 5 pages are sample dispute letters. I'm sorry but this chapter should be the meat and potatoes of the book not "THE STRING BEAN". Another disappointment was chapter 9 titled "Lending Scams". This chapter has 11 pages on this subject: "WHO CARES"! This book is suppose to be about "CREDIT REPAIR". I think this book had good intentions, but just couldn't put it together. It had alot of usless information scattered throughout the book.

I feel anyone looking to repair their credit will not gain the knowledge or confidence to complete their goals with this book. The only positive thing about this book is that it is easy to read. My advice to anyone looking to repair their credit is LOOK ELSEWHERE!

I would just like to add, I just completed reading a book by BILL KELLY,JR."THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO CREDIT REPAIR". Now this was a great book! I will be writing a review on this great book soon. STAY TUNED!

Lacks useful information........1999-07-26

I recieved more useful information from a pamplet my bank sent to me than from this book. This book rambles on about how good credit affects you and why it's important to have good credit. The useful information is simply repeating what most people already know - That you can write your credit agency, and for a fee get a copy of your report, and you can write them a letter disputing what's in your report. It does not give any real depth to help you straiten out your credit.

Easy to read, eye opening for the uninitiated, not a how to........1999-04-28

This book is very good for people that do not work in the fields of credit/accounting/banking, etc. Much of what it had to say I already knew, but I guess I can therefore say I agree with it. It tells you why YOU should repair your own credit and not pay someone else to do it. It tells you WHY you should do it. It gives a good bibliography.... but it does NOT tell you HOW to do it. That's really what I was looking for. I liked it well enough to buy his other book, Life After Debt, which is advertised as a how-to. I'll get back to you.

Amazing.......2004-07-24

Evangeline's books are must-haves for African Americans. The law school admissions process is a daunting task, but especially for African Americans since there is so much mystery surrounding what Blacks REALLY need to get into law school, how we stack up against White candidates, etc. Accordingly, Evangeline never mentions specific GPA's or LSAT scores--which can be good or bad since no one ever says exactly what Blacks need to score on the LSAT--but just encourages us all to get the best GPA we can in college and do whatever we can to ace the LSAT. Admittedly, it does bother me that none of her books actually reveal what Black students at top law schools made on the LSAT, but I understand and still believe that this is the most helpful book for African Americans on the market because it is the only one that addresses us specifically and doesn't talk to ALL applicants as if everything applies to them the exact same way. It also bothers me that she somewhat seems to assume we all attended HBCU's, are disadvantaged or lower socioeconomic--none of which I feel applies to me--but, again, her information is still helpful just the same. Evangeline Mitchell, in her book The African American Pre- Law School Advice Guide, attempts to aid the African American future law student through the hoops of preparing for law school. In this four hundred page comprehensive guide, she covers information from a student's motivation to enter into law school to different truths about law school.

Beginning with her personal experience, Ms. Mitchell gives testimony to the difficulty of law school and the necessity of this guide especially for African Americans. Brick by brick she constructs the detailed steps from the question "Do you really want to Go to Law School?, to an appendix that includes other references, Black Law school profiles, needed checklists, and more.

As a person who considered law after receiving my degree, I picked this text up with anticipated interest. Initially intimidated by its many pages and small font I was impressed with the enormous amount of information. Ms. Mitchell wonderfully anticipated that reaction and created a "straight out" outline designed for easier reading. This outline lays out the main points of each chapter so that the reader can utilize this guide as a reference guide

Ms. Mitchell's organization of this book is probably the most impressive thing about the book. As stated before the outline is a definite plus and the appendix was full of such great information that realistically it could have been a book unto itself. Although there are testaments of its success included in the book, Ms. Mitchell does include a disclaimer that everyone's experience will be varied and this book was designed simply as an aide. However I cannot imagine how a guide this well put together could be anything but helpful.

Varied essays; Some good, some dull and PC.......2004-05-08

Some chapters are better than others. Several are good but many are written like the required reading for one of those required "diversity" courses in college. Those essays (about half the book) don't get into any practical information about law school, but instead focus on things like feminism, race, sexual orientation and how that relates to law, learning, or the typical student experience. Other chapters have interesting information and have good insight about subjects taught (Torts, Civil Procedure, etc.).

A big-picture view of law school.......2004-02-14

In preparing for law school, any student should try to get a little extra information to help him or her make the transition to law school and succeed. Many books offer tips and tricks for taking notes, making outlines, and networking. This book, however, offers a bit more background on the course of study.

The book contains individual essays from different teachers explain not what you should do, but why should do it. For instance, one essay discusses gays and lesbians going to law school. The essay mentions joining a society or group to help deal with the stress. Being in law school already has its intense stress, so joining a club will allow some relaxation with others who share your background.

The essay went on to discuss whether mentioning sexual preference is necessary or recommended. Even for a non-gay or non-lesbian, this essay was really interesting. The author has opened up my ideas to the kinds of issues any fellow students may be going through.

If you only get one book, this probably won't be the one to get. However, I have to recommend this book highly. I feel that I have a bigger overall picture what I would be getting into.

As a future law student, this book was an invaluable resource. I feel much more prepared for entering law school, and know what to expect from my classes. Also, it has great info on financing and issues facing women, minorities, etc. The authors of the chapters seem to be very knowlegeable and qualified. I recommend it to everyone planning to go to law school.

The Penguin Guide to American Law Schools.......2001-04-22

This book contains a very short synopsis of each school, but no real sustance. I did not receive any additional info that I could not have gotten off each school's website. There are other books that are better. For example, the Official Guide to U.S. Law Schools 2001 by Bonnie Gordon(Editor). I already had my schools picked out, so if you have just started looking and are open to any school, then this may be the book that is perfect for you. If you are down to your 8-10 schools, look elsewhere.
