Book Description

Recent research in business strategy suggests that corporate reputations are a valuable strategic asset for every company. Good reputations have been shown to help firms attain and sustain superior financial performance in their industry. This book outlines how high-status companies become corporate super brands, and it present managers with a framework to proactively enhance their corporation's desired reputation. While many books concentrate on advertising or corporate identity as the primary tools for reputation enhancement, this book provides a more expansive and realistic picture of what it takes to build a corporate super brand. One of its key contributions is that it emphasizes the roles of customer value and organizational culture in the reputation-building process and exposes the limitations of corporate advertising, sponsorships, and minor corporate identity change. Drawing on more than fifteen years of academic research, executive seminars, and consulting experience, Grahame Dowling suggests ways to improve the corporate reputations that different groups of stakeholders hold of your company. He also describes how to avoid many of the traps that catch unwary managers who try to improve their company's desired reputation.

The objective is to introduce some consistency to the often contradictory views about e-commerce, bringing together different academic and management theories and frameworks into a coherent whole. It is written with a European perspective with examples that are drawn from around the globe, consistent with the nature of e-commerce.

This textbook gives an overview of e-commerce, relevant issues and frameworks.

It looks at the foundations on which e-commerce is built - the technology. Managers and students of management must have an understanding of the infrastructure and inextricable linkages between processes and technology in a 21st century business. It is no longer acceptable or good business practice for technology to be the sole responsibility of IT departments.

The book then goes on to examine businesses that have been built on these technology foundations. It explains the concept of the business model, the `dot com' phenomenon and frameworks that have emerged as a result. It also outlines the legal and ethical implications for an e-business.

It outlines the academic debate about the impact of e-commerce on economics and management thinking. It concludes with a glance to the future, exploring the potential new wave of technology.

This textbook will be essential for undergraduate and post graduate students. It is a user-friendly text with case studies, and learning objectives to guide the student and lecturers. A companion website will accompany the text including cases, student activities, PowerPoint slides, notes and articles in support of the book. It will also give lecturers direct access to the author.

It will provide students with the skills to be able to converse knowledgeably with IT managers and be able to ask the right questions in order to make a decision about IT.

This is no casual eBay user's guide: it's a serious business survey which uses examples from around the world to link e-commerce with both business and technological frameworks, examining how business models have changed due to the 'dot com' revolution, how new ways of doing business have emerged, and the new legal and ethical challenges an e-business faces. Quite scholarly and analytical, Applying E-Commerce In Business is highly recommended for the college-level business student analyzing e-commerce history and structure.

      Book Description

The Internet presents businesses with the most potent collection of tactics and new business opportunities they've ever experienced. But the Web is certainly no magic bullet, and setting your business apart requires that you understand exactly how the Internet fits in with all the other elements of your company's growth strategy. Inside, two experts reveal their knowledge of how to deepen and profit from brands in the era of the Internet. Using examples of established companies both large and small, Marc Braunstein and Edward H. Levine trace the steps every successful business must take to develop a strategy that not only surmounts the challenges of e-commerce but, just as important, reinforces customer loyalty. In Deep Branding on the Internet, You'll also discover:

How a deep brand can be the ultimate search engine for your business
Why you should ignore online users and focus instead on customers
How smart, multi-channel brandholders should win on the Internet every time
Why the Internet has a low barrier to entry but a high barrier to profit
How the Web can give you more control over channels and markets that are becoming increasingly fragmented
      And much more!

Insightful, easy to read, and packed with practical information, Deep Branding on the Internet is a must-have tool that everyone from a Fortune 500 manager to an aspiring small-business owner will want to read, share, and act upon.

4 out of 5 stars Marc Braunstein is the Nostradamus for the DOT COM BUST.......2002-10-15

I love this book. Braunstein predicts the collapse of the Dot-Com boom almost to the exact day! His writing style reminds me of Thomas Marlowe or even James Joyce. A literary masterpiece and a delightfully humorous book.

5 out of 5 stars Braunstein and Loveen predicted the calm.down revolution.......2001-12-04

As a senior executive for a well known .com, I found this book well read and full of useful examples of past mistakes made along the way by Internet companies being run by headstrong MBA types with little if any real world business experience. Marc Braunstein obviously wrote the lionshare of the book as his wit and candor are what makes this book not only pleasurable, bit also a very valuable and timely expose on the economic environment surrounding the Internet generation. Firebrand is lucky to have such a talented man working for them. Bravo to Firebrand.

5 out of 5 stars Do Not Even Think About E-Commerce Before Reading This Book.......2001-04-25

Anyone who thinks that the internet is less demanding of the brand, product manager or smaller product company is doomed to failure. I have read this book a couple of times and it really nails down the needed disciplines for making your brand rock in this new channel. Clear and easy to read. Make sure you don't leave on your next plane ride without it.

5 out of 5 stars You won't be cheated by this book!!!.......2001-03-13

Like a good solid marriage, this book is based on truths and honesty. Don't cheat your .com company...buy a few copies and share them with your employees or give them to the people that once worked for .coms and are looking for new jobs. A great read.

                Book Description

The legal essays by Michael Bayles in this collection display his commitment to utilitarianism both as a moral theory and an analytical device. A utilitarian must choose between the best of all possible alternatives and so must lay out the alternatives and thus their consequences carefully and completely. As it happens, there is no better way of understanding why something is as it is in the law, and no better way to lay the foundations for criticism and improvement, than to lay out what the alternatives are, carefully distinguishing them, their justifications, and their implications for changing other areas of the law and for changing our relation to the law. Bayles was a master at such work, and each essay thus repays careful study for anyone concerned about the law. The essays cover a wide variety of topics, from contract law to the criminal law, from torts to theory, and form a natural set. Laying out the alternatives in one area makes it much clearer how and why alternatives in other areas are acceptable or required. Interconnections within the legal system as a whole not readily visible when studying one area of the law become obvious when several are laid out side-by-side using the analytical skill required by a good utilitarian.

                  Book Description

Food insecurity is a central concern and a fundamental challenge for human welfare and economic growth in Africa. Low agricultural production, results in low incomes, poor nutrition, vulnerability to risks and lack of empowerment. Land degradation and soil fertility depletion are considered the major threats to food security and natural resource conservation in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Investments in technology, policy and institutional reforms are needed to increase agricultural productivity to ensure food security and sustained national economies. Past research has generated numerous soil fertility management technologies which if adopted could propel the African continent out of the poverty trap. However, these technologies have had little, if any, impact due to low adoption by the smallholder farmers. Africa needs to break the cycle between poverty and land degradation by employing strategies that empower farmers economically and promoting sustainable agricultural intensification using efficient, effective and affordable agricultural technologies. In addition, farmers and local entrepreneurs need to be linked to markets to increase their capacities to invest in sustainable land management. All these requirements need to be achieved through an integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) approach that is holistic and dynamic in order to foster both technical and institutional change.

                      Book Description

Soil degradation and nutrient depletion have become serious threats to agricultural productivity in Africa. Soils cannot supply the quantities of nutrients required and yield levels decline rapidly once cropping commences. This book addresses these issues and includes papers from an
international symposium held at Cotonou, Benin, October 9-12, 2000, organized by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, Nigeria and the Department of Land Management of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. In five main parts it marks the end of a first phase of
collaborative research on "Balanced Nutrient Management Systems for the Moist Savanna and Humid Forest Zones of Africa" and concludes with recommendations, providing essential reading for crop and soil scientists.

                          Description:
The global farming systems (GFS) approach is extended by adding a soil fertility and nutrient management dimension for Africa's forest-based, maize mixed, cereal-root crop mixed, and agro-pastoral millet/sorghum farming systems. Use is made of sustainable livelihood concepts, translated into farmer capitals (natural, physical, financial, human, social), and the indicator-based DPSIR (driving force-pressure-state-impact-response) framework for environmental reporting. State and impact indicators show, for each GFS, levels of nutrient stocks and flows, respectively. In case of nutrient depletion, soils may (i) initially still be fertile enough to provide reasonable and stable yields, (ii) support declining yields, or (iii) support low yields at low fertility level. In the latter case, food security is generally at stake. Response indicators include the level of uptake of improved integrated nutrient management strategies at land user level, and the enforcement of new and enabling pro-agriculture and pro-environment policies. Although the extended GFS have no direct relevance for farm-level interventions, the approach can be used to frame soil fertility research priorities and policies at a regional level.

                              Description:
The processes of nutrient depletion and soil degradation that limit productivity of smallholder African farms are spatially heterogeneous. Causes of variability in soil fertility management at different scales of analysis are both biophysical and socio-economic. Such heterogeneity is categorised in this study, which quantifies its impact on nutrient flows and soil fertility status at region and farm scales, as a first step in identifying spatial and temporal niches for targeting of soil fertility management strategies and technologies. Transects for soil profile observation, participatory rural appraisal techniques and classical soil sampling and chemical analysis were sampled across 60 farms in three sub-locations (Emuhaia, Shinyalu, Aludeka), which together represent much of the variability found in the highlands of western Kenya. Five representative farm types were identified using socio-economic information and considering production activities, household objectives and the main constraints faced by farmers. Soil fertility management and nutrient resource flows were studied for each farm type and related to differences in soil fertility status at farm scale. Farm types 1 and 2 were the wealthiest; the former relied on off-farm income and farmed small pieces of land (0.6-1.1ha) while the latter farmed relatively large land areas (1.6-3.8ha) mainly with cash crops. The poorest farm type 5 also farmed small pieces of land (0.4-1.0ha) but relied on low wages derived from working for wealthier farmers. Both farm types 1 and 5 relied on off-farm earnings and sold the least amounts of farm produce to the market, though the magnitude of their cash, labour and nutrient flows was contrasting. Farms of types 3 and 4 were intermediate in size and wealth, and represented different crop production strategies for self-consumption and the market. Average grain yields fluctuated around 1tha^-^1 year^-^1 for all farm types and sub-locations. Grain production by farms of types 4 and 5 was much below annual family requirements, estimated at 170kgperson^-^1 year^-^1. Household wealth and production orientation affected the pattern of resource flow at farm scale. In the land-constrained farms of type 1, mineral fertilisers were often used more intensively (ca. 50kgha^-^1), though with varying application rates (14-92kgha^-^1). The use of animal manure in such small farms (e.g. 2.2t year^-^1) represented intensities of use of up to 8tha^-^1, and a net accumulation of C and macronutrients brought into the farm by livestock. In farms of type 5, intensities of use of mineral and organic fertilisers ranged between 0-12kgha^-^1 and 0-0.5tha^-^1, respectively. A consistent trend of decreasing input use from farm types 1-5 was generally observed, but nutrient resources and land management practices (e.g. fallow) differed enormously between sub-locations. Inputs of nutrients were almost nil in Aludeka farms. Both inherent soil properties and management explained the variability found in soil fertility status. Texture explained the variation observed in soil C and related total N between sub-locations, whereas P availability varied mainly between farm types as affected by input use.

                                  Description:
The aim of this paper is to demystify some of the popular myths related to tropical soil fertility management that have gained hold in the development community and are often being promulgated by NGO's and development agencies in the tropics. Negative nutrient balances at farm scale or at larger scales are very often presented as proof that soil fertility is at stake in SSA. However, nutrient balances at plot and farm section scale are not always negative. In areas with large nutrient stocks, short-term nutrient mining is fully acceptable. Fertilizer use continues to face considerable controversy in SSA. In this paper, we demonstrate that fertilizers rarely damage the soil; that fertilizers are being used in SSA, often with favourable value-to-cost ratios; and that fertilizers do not cause eutrophication in SSA. Rock phosphates are abundantly present in SSA but most are poorly soluble. Adding these phosphates to compost heaps does not enhance the short-term availability of their P. Although organic inputs are essential soil amendments besides fertilizer, organic inputs alone cannot sustain crop production due to limitations in their quality and availability. Organic resources can also potentially stimulate harmful pests and diseases. Legumes are often advocated as important sources of organic matter but not all legumes fix nitrogen, require inoculation, or are a source of free nitrogen, as even green manures require land and labour. Certain grain legumes with high N harvest indices do not improve soil fertility, but remove net amounts of N from the soil. These myths need correction if we are to harness the role of science in the overall goal of assisting farmers to address the acute problems of poor soil fertility for smallholder farmers in SSA.
