5 out of 5 stars Valuable Handbook for Reaching Employees.......2003-10-12

Today's employees want to be informed, included, and even consulted regarding corporate decisions, directions, activities, and issues. If they are not connected with their employer, people will leave the organization to seek employment opportunities where they can be more engaged. Anything and everything a company can do to relate more closely with the people who matter will make a difference.

An experienced corporate communicator, Holtz emphasizes that internal communication in a company is much more than just publishing a newsletter or magazine for employees. The behaviors communicators influence are "the ones that would support the company bottom-line business efforts." There's more to this process than reporting birthdays, babies, brides, and bowling scores. Employees must be reached with compelling, understandable, and credible messages that are easy to access, grasp, and absorb.

This easy-to-read handbook explores a number of facets of employee communications. Readers will learn about the types of communications, planning, and traditional communication tools. More modern approaches of online communication are discussed, along with insights into the sustainability of the communication process. Holtz devotes chapters to special situations such as communicating bad news, and change. Chapters on organizing and budgeting, as well as measuring the value of communication, provide some professional tools that will be useful to the reader.

The value of the book is enhanced by appendices on messaging policies and resources, as well as a good index. The text, written in a relatively conversational style, is seasoned with case studies from two fictitious companies-one that does communication right, and one that misses the mark. The book is current and is designed with enough white space to make it comfortable to read and benefit from.

While I might have organized the chapters a bit differently, that's an easy task for a wise reader to accomplish. The content is here-valuable for the newcomer to the field, the seasoned professional who could benefit from a refresher, and the manager or executive who just needs to learn and appreciate a little more about how to communicate more effectively with a workforce that's hungry for information and interaction.

3 out of 5 stars Primer on Internal Communication.......2006-01-16

With sections on e-mail etiquette, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, communication theory, paginating a publication and running meetings, authors Lyn Smith and Pamela Mounter attempt to cover a lot of territory in the field of internal communication. Unfortunately, they end up being overly general and diffuse. In addition, they are oriented toward the United Kingdom, and their language and some of their corporate examples assume that the reader is familiar with events there. So, this book may not be terribly useful for American readers or for those who already have experience in internal corporate communication. We recommend it to anyone who needs a primer on why internal communication is increasingly important in the corporate world.

              Book Description

"Fun, fast, and full of stories, this is an excellent book for anyone who feels that their ministry - evangelistic or otherwise - starts the moment they leave work and stops the moment they re-enter its doors.

Mark Greene provides a theology of work that is sadly lacking in many churches, pointing out that most people work with non-Christians and yet never see them as potential Christians. He also challenges the pressure put on those who are already over-worked to spend vast amounts of time outside work hours evangelizing when their real witness has to be with those with whom they spend so much time.

Using anecdotes, Scriptural references, questions and problems to mull over, this book is for anyone who wants to bring Jesus to their "warmest contacts" - the people with whom they work."

              Book Description

Identity theft will cost U.S. consumers and their banks or credit card companies more than $1.4 billion in 2004.

A typical victim spends an average of $800 and 175 hours over almost two years cleaning up after an ID theft incident.

In an information-based economy, your personal information means as much to you as money in the bank meant to your grandparents.

This book explains, in plain English, how to make sure your credit history, financial data, account information and other essentials remain safe. It combines interviews with law enforcement and security experts with case studies and examples to give readers the knowledge they need to avoid ID theft. And it includes practical advice about what to do when someone gets your information and starts using it illegally.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Full of information.......2005-12-29

Identity theft is the fastest growing consumer threat in America. The explosion of computer and graphics technology has made it a much easier crime to perpetrate than in the past. It is the sort of crime that can happen to anyone, and be perpetrated by anyone.

The most practical documents to obtain for an identity thief are a Social Security Card or a driver's license (usually stolen and altered). With those, anything is possible, from getting new credit cards to cleaning out bank accounts. Administration of these systems is chaotic, and faking is easy.

The lead federal agency dealing with identity theft is the Federal Trade Commission. A problem with any federal investigation of a specific case is that the amounts are usually small, perhaps a few thousand dollars, and the victim and perpetrator usually live in different states (cost efficiency and jurisdiction). Therefore, the first responder will most likely be the local police department.

Preventing identity theft starts with the consumer. It is not possible to fill in all ID "holes," but things can be done, like safeguarding personal information, to make a thief go elsewhere. The consumer is responsible for notifying the authorities of illegal activity; the bank or credit card won't do it. Clean out your wallet or purse. Keep a photocopy of your license, credit cards, etc. in a safe place, in case it is stolen. Get things like bank account numbers, PIN numbers, passports and birth certificates out of there, and into a fireproof box at home. When ID theft is discovered, document all letters and phone calls, no matter what.

This book is excellent. It's small, so it can easily fit in a pocket or purse, and it is packed with easy to understand information. For those who are concerned about, or are victims of, ID theft, this is very much worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Critical Info, Told in Context.......2005-10-19

This is the best book that I've found on this subject.
Lots of people are worried about ID theft. But the truth is not very many understand exactly what the crime is and how it works. This book explains both--in good detail, but also in plain English.
The book is full of case studies and preventive steps you can take for reducing your risk of having your ID stolen. But it also makes the important point that preventing ID theft is mostly a matter of changing your lifestyle. Being willing to be a little difficult or uncooperative when people ask for your credit card or--more importantly--your Social Security number in everyday business transactions.
Learning...and being willing...to say "No" is a key part of mindset you need to stay secure. This book does an excellent job of explaining that.

2 out of 5 stars Why pay? .......2005-04-25

Three key problems I found with this book:

              1. It is wordy and the key useful material doesn't stick out or appear all together.

              2. There isn't much useful material.

              3. You may be easily able to obtain equivalent or better info free.

I haven't read any other book on identity theft. And I haven't made any study of identity theft. But, after reading this book, I went thru and made a list of material that seemed useful. From the list, I crossed out precautions I was already aware of. I was left with 1 item, all the others may be good reminders but only the 1 item was something I wasn't aware of and am grateful to be. But even that one wasn't that big a deal.

The free brochure my state representative sent me had about as much useful material. And I quickly just found a government web site on identify theft that seems more useful than this book.

Mostly what I learned from this book was how easy identity theft can be for those who are willing to break the law, even if one tries to prevent it. So I appreciate that lesson from this book, but it appears that info of equivalent or greater value is readily obtainable free and seems to have been since this book appeared in 2004.

              5 out of 5 stars What?.......2005-04-07

If ones credit history is messed up by identity theft and several credit cards have been falsely issued in ones name - can someone frame you?

5 out of 5 stars A timely handbook vital to any consumer's fiscal health.......2005-02-09

Identity theft is one of the hardest thefts to control and is the one most damaging to consumers, so Identity Theft: How To Protect Your Name, Your Credit And Your Vital Information, And What To Do When Someone Hijacks Any Of These is a timely handbook vital to any consumer's fiscal health. Chapters explore common mechancis of ID theft, consider the various ways crooks choose victims and manufacture bogus identities from information, and tells how to reduce a risk of ID theft, and to respond effectively if someone steals an identity.

              Book Description

"Wrong Way is a story of corporate intrigue, backroom dealings, shareholder activism - and the spectacular fall from grace of newspaper tycoon Conrad Black. Tautly written and fast-paced, Wrong Way is a corporate thriller that chronicles the excesses of a larger-than-life entrepreneur whose autocratic temperament and management style would prove to be his undoing."

5 out of 5 stars Great book, within its self-described limits.......2007-04-07

The authors promise a critical examination of Conrad Black and Hollinger International, and that is what they deliver. With the exception of Richard Breeden, and perhaps Christopher Browne, none of the major characters in the book go uncriticized at some point in it. The narrative is not only engrossing, but also is sufficiently fact-driven to allow a reader to draw his or her own conclusions about the causes of the implosion of Hollinger. (It is vaguely worded in spots, but that would only be a drawback for those who would use it as a textbook or monograph.)

It also has a new relevance thanks to the current trial of Conrad Black, Peter Atkinson, Jack Boultbee and Mark Kipnis. In fact, a recent prosecution witness, Fred Creasey, could have used this book to refresh his memory before his testimony in the trial. (Near-bottom of p. 53.) One other nice feature of this book is that it quotes the E-mails that Conrad Black wrote, recently excerpted in the media, in more copious detail than those excerpts reveal. This level of detail will satisfy the curiosity of anyone who's already read those quotes.

I have only one quibble with the book, which does not relate to its self-imposed limitation of time scope. In the Epilogue, the authors portray Conrad Black as a relic of a bygone age, but their sense of history is somewhat inaccurate. Rather than being a holdover from the nineteenth century, Conrad Black, to the extent to which he is a relic as a CEO, is a holdover from the management culture of the 1980s. When a proper history of that period is written, it will be found that the grandfather of that era was Frederic Donner, chairman and CEO of General Motors from 1958 to 1967. The ever-growing scandals of shareholder abuse are distorted mirrors of Mr. Donner's image; the distortion comes from the relaxation of Donner's well-known probity.
