The authors use Alvin Toeffler's term, "the third wave" to describe the change currently taking place in the economy which some have called the Digital Revolution and others the Information Age. The first two waves were the Agricultural and the Industrial, both of which radically changed the way we worked and lived. In the Information Age most products have become little more than packaged knowledge and technology plays a pivotal role by storing and distributing knowledge to the employees who need it. The change to the Information Age has raised significant issues for management. Jeremy and Tony Hope have addressed the ten most vital issues facing managers in the third wave.

1. Strategy: Adopt strategic planning, a continuous process of planning carried out at all levels of the corporation. Focus on the core competencies of your company.
2. Customer Value: Match your core competencies to the right customers. Build your operating model around which customers you can best serve.
3. Knowledge Management: Harness knowledge contained at all levels of the organization and find ways to make it move through the organization quickly.
4. Business Organization: Organize the business around networks and processes, not hierarchies of power. Disperse authority to those who can make things happen.
5. Market Focus: Focus on the most profitable customers, and try hard to keep them.
6. Management Accounting: Use accounting techniques like activity-based costing or target costing that allow you to identify opportunities for improvement.
7. Measurement and Control: Keep managers moving toward strategic goals, not strict budgetary targets.
8. Shareholder Value: Find ways to measure the value of the company's intellectual assets, not just its book value.
9. Productivity: Increasing productivity depends on increasing the quality of your work force. Use training and incentives to increase quality.
10. Transformation: Encourage changes in culture, management style and employee attitudes to totally reengineer your business model.

5 out of 5 stars A Book With Real Management Substance.......2000-01-29

One of the better books with thoughts on strategies and management concepts sustainable in the age of technological innovation and globalization. Certainly more substance than some of the .com and other e-commerce/customer-centric titles, with application across industries.

5 out of 5 stars A book one returns to.......1999-01-18

This book focus on one issue, how to stay alive and prosper in the new network based competitive environment. The authors look at this issue from ten different perspectives, and contrary to many other "overwiev" books, they come to a coherent conclusion from all standpoints.

This book doesn't have all the answers (nobody does), but it does a very good jobb of explaining why some old truths ain't true anymore and it does point out the general directions where you should look for the new truths for the new era.

Highly recommended for individuals that wish to be current on management principles of the information age. Very readable, and informative.

4 out of 5 stars Examine the top ten issues facing 'third wave' companies ..........1998-11-20

The two authors examine the top ten issues facing 'third wave' companies i.e. organisations of the information age and knowledge economy. In 'second wave' organisations (industrial economy), competitive advantage is built around efficient use of factors of production - land, labour, and capital. Third wave companies, on the other hand, compete firmly on the basis of knowledge deployment and the imaginative use of technology. According to the authors, 'second wave' managers and 'second wave' organisations (Editors note: and those teaching 'second wave' management principles and strategy) are at the crossroads. One road will lead to slow decline; the other to the prospect of long-term success. Achieving this success will require total organisational transformation in the areas of strategy; customer value; knowledge management; business organisation; market focus; management accounting; measurement and control; shareholder value; productivity and reward systems.

A good example of the main argument developed is in the area of customer value. 'Third wave' organisations are those who use information technology to understand the needs of customers and to match highly focused customer segments with their own core competencies thereby building long-term relationships. This emphasis on one-to-one relationships contrasts with the approach of 'second wave' companies who have an unbending faith in increasing scale and market share, despite a wealth of evidence showing that market share and net profits are not strongly correlated. While building market share has been the one of the primary driving forces of 'second wave' companies, 'third wave' managers will be more concerned with attracting the right customers; customers that represent a close strategic fit with the company or who have the potential to grow and therefore to be highly profitable. This has major implications for assessing company value. Traditional accounting statements show only results, but seldom tell how these results were achieved or how performance compares with competitors, and are a very poor guide to future performance because they give few clues to the changes in key processes and capabilities that determine business strength.

The graphical presentations and practical explanations are very helpful to valuation practitioners. I was so impressed I purchased the related software that is promoted in and modeled after the book. It never functioned correctly, and after a week of trying to reach technical support I finally reached them and they didn't really try to resolve the software's Visual Basic malfunction. Book is great, but ignore it's promotion of the software.

Having read his sixth edition, I was impressed enough with the 10th edition that I use it for the college class I teach. Unlike most books in this area, Dr. Helfert's book is easy to read and VERY practitioner oriented. I truly believe that if you have an interest in financial analysis, either as an investor or from the perspective of running your own organization, this is the single most valuable resource you could own. If I didn't believe that was true, I'd have my students using a different book.

This study draws on statistical, historical, and ethnographic data to provide a clear and comprehensive picture of the remarkable changes which have occurred in this region since the 1950s. Age at marriage for females has risen sharply, age differences between spouses have narrowed, and
divorce rates have fallen drastically in relation to rates in Western countries. Gavin Jones sets these trends within the context of the pre-Islamic situation in the region, and the more recent political, social, religious, economic, and legal changes which have influenced family and marriage
patterns. This is a fascinating account of changes in marriage and divorce patterns in a region experiencing rapid economic and social development.

                  Book Description

Long before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, awakened the United States and the Western world to the heightened level of the terrorist threat, Southeast Asia had been dealing with this threat. The bombing in Bali that killed 202 people, many of them Australian tourists, was by no means the region's first experience with Islamic extremism, which can be traced back to the 1940s, and the Darul Islam struggle. The most recent group to emerge is Al-Jama'ah Al-Islamiyah (AJAI), the most potent Islamic terrorist organization to date in the region and the group behind the Bali bombing. Prior to 9/11, the terrorist challenge was essentially national in character, with groups attempting either to secede from the central government to form a new state or to force the central government to adopt policies that would support the raison d'etre of these extremist groups. Essentially, this involved the establishment of a political system that was more Islamic in character, either nationally or within a specific territory of a national state. This book analyzes the increasing Talibanization of Southeast Asia, a relatively new phenomenon that involves the adoption of Islamist doctrines, ideologies, and values that are largely militant in character, and that for some groups includes the adoption of violence to achieve their goals. Understanding this process of Talibanization in Southeast Asia, which was once an oasis of moderate Islam in the modern world, is the key to unraveling the mystery of the increased radicalization in the region. The AJAI represents the birth of the first regional terrorist organization in Southeast Asia. It is a transnational terrorist organization along the lines of al-Qaeda. It aims to establish a regional Islamic state covering most of southern Southeast Asia that would ultimately form a new Islamic epicenter in the Asia-Pacific region. Additionally, what has made the AJAI a potent force has been its ability to synergize with various existing religious extremist groups in the region and beyond, including al-Qaeda and other like-minded groups based in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This has succeeded in posing one of the most serious security challenges to the region since the end of the Cold War. Jihadists are operating in small and localized cells even though the broad goals remain the same, namely, to spread sharia, establish an Islamic state, and bring down secular regimes. As most governments do not have the credibility or the expertise to diminish the threat posed by Islamist extremism, Wahhabism, and Salafism, Southeast Asia is in danger of being Talibanized in the near future.

From the supplier: The American Frozen Foods Institute (AFFI) is calling on the Depts. of Health and Human Services and Agriculture to include frozen fruits and vegetables in their new 'Dietary Guidelines for Americans.' The AFFI says that the new guidelines overlook the nutritional benefits that can be gained from frozen foods by promoting only the consumption of raw fruits and vegetables. The association is also seeking congressional support for its proposal to include frozen food in the guidelines.

From the supplier: The American Frozen Food Institute has confirmed its opposition to proposals made by the U.S. Customs Service regarding 'front panel' regulations on the placement of signs indicating the country of origin of imported frozen produce. AFFI argued that the rules impose undue financial burden upon frozen produce importers and may create precedents for imported products in other industries. In addition, produce exporters may retaliate against the US.
