    Book Description

Growth in the services sector has far outpaced the knowledge available to global managers and government officials. Forced to constantly redefine their roles in the face of massive technological changes and a myriad of regional and worldwide trade agreements, these leaders require up-to-date research and analysis in order to make effective decisions and to remain competitive.

This book examines the globalization of the service industry and the radical alteration that this has caused to the role of government. It will be helpful to managers in service industries who wish to learn more about changes in the environment in which they operate, and it also is essential reading for government officials who deal with the services sector.

Written by some of the most knowledgeable experts in the field, the book surveys the structure and evolution of several industries and evaluates the different governmental roles that each has necessitated. Contributors include: Jonathan Aronson, William Ascher, Jack Behrman, Peter Daniels, Karin Fladmoe-Lindquist, Shane Greenstein, Wolfram Gruhler, Helge Hveem, Frances Katrishen, Lilach Nachum, Aurelio Parisotto, Ravi Ramamurti, Nicos Scordis, Knud Erik Skouby, and Yair Aharoni.

      Book Description

Trust is an elusive concept, meaning different things to different people, and so needs to be clearly defined. By focusing on relations within and between firms, Bart Nooteboom undertakes to produce a clearer definition of trust and its role in the economy.

Trust, now available in paperback, deals with a range of questions such as: what are the roles of trust? What can we trust in? Can trust serve as an instrument for the governance of relations? Is trust a substitute, a precondition or an outcome of contracts? The author then goes on to analyze what trust is based on, what its limits are, how it grows and how it can also break down. The role of intermediaries is also discussed.

Bart Nooteboom argues that trust goes beyond calculative self-interest and that blind, unconditional trust is unwise. He then examines the paradox of how trust can be non-calculative and yet not blind. The book also reveals ways to measure and model trust, its antecedents and its consequences.

        Book Description

`In the past, the economic analysis of the firm has focused too exclusively on pecuniary considerations. While costs and revenues are vital, it is equally important not to ignore other essential elements, such as trust, that cannot be so readily traded or given a monetary value. Bart Nooteboom's work is an important corrective to mainstream opinion. He is one of the pioneers of the analysis of trust in organizations and this present volume is a wonderful and elegant addition to this literature.'

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the time.......2007-02-11

I read this book thoroughly and listened to Gary Coxe's cd's. It basically instructs you to be fake and doesn't really deal with the inner deep aspects that contribute to life's problems. It didn't help me at all and I could not recommend this book to a friend.

          1 out of 5 stars Stupidity Perfected............2006-07-06

I don't read these "self-help" books but after all the great reviews for this book on Amazon, I thought, what the heck, I'll give it a try. According to the book's cover, "Gary Coxe is a personal growth expert and life strategist". Yeah HIS OWN personal growth by having published this stupidity! This book is uninformative, useless and worthless. I gave up on it after reading half the book. You'd think that by the time you read half way through a book it would give you something useful you can use. Not this one! It's full of the author's "personal experiences". Who Cares about the author's personal experiences and how he started writing the book!!! It was cute at the beginning of the book but it keeps on and on and on about his experiences. ENOUGH ALREADY! This book is Worthless, Useless, a total Waste of Money and the author is clueless. In fact Gary Coxe perfected stupidity. You gotta love these "self-taught, clueless experts"!

          1 out of 5 stars ho hum..........2006-04-09

If you suffer from insommnia, I would recommend this book by Gary Coxe. About all it did for me was put me to sleep.
What interested me in this book was that I wanted to see what the author had to say about positive thinking. I was hoping to read something enlightening but I didn't find anything new or even motivating here AT ALL. Mr. Coxe puts down other self-help authors, "self-styled experts" as he calls them by claiming that they merely have a magnetic personality and have "mastered the media". Their words only give us a quick fix and don't help us in the longrun. While I agree that this can be true for SOME, I have read many a self-help, success book that has helped me and changed my life tremendously in many different ways.
I don't think he believes that we, as self-help seekers, realize that positive thinking is merely the foundation upon which all else is built. It is obviously not an end in itself. He goes to great and I mean GREAT lengths, to point this out.
All in all I found this book to be a rambling, confusing, condescending disappointment!! Save your money on this one.

5 out of 5 stars I Rented Some Space to Coxe!.......2006-03-30

Einstein once said, "Things should be made as simple as possible. But not simpler." Gary Coxe nails it! I have read so much stuff over the years that left me feeling frustrated because it was full of half truths from those who clearly didn't graduate from the school of hard knocks. Simply put, Gary just didn't attend that school, he graduated and it shows. He has truly worked out some things with honesty, compassion and directness. This might not be the first book to give to someone in a pit but I think it should be in the first few you recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Just We All Need.......2006-03-19

Gary's simplistic yet very realistic coverage of this the subject of not letting others rent space in you head is just what I needed. So much in our society today is a need for people to take responsibility for their own actions and Gary's book encourages that. Gary's real life lessons really help him to write in terms that we all can readily understand. I appreciate that touch. One more thing, Gary's thoughts on taking negative ideas and turning them into a positive purpose really gave me food for thought. I will now be more conscious of removing any negative emotion from my negative thoughts.
Thank you, Gary, I will recommend your book to my mastermind group.

This story takes you through the development and career of a test pilot and what is needed to achieve that end. Described are the challenges, education, pilot experience that precede the final entry into this highly specialized profession. Most pilots are at least in their mid thirties when they get in. The challenges of working in government agencies, and the politics, when you are charged with aviation safety, especially in the FAA Washington Headquarters, are included. The Supersonic Transport program and its unique problems and challenges, working with other government agencies, the foreign aviation authorities and manufacturers are described as well. Actual incidents are described for close calls and some accidents and their causes and situation. The transition from very tired WWII Corsairs in the Korean War to brand new twin jet night interceptors with new model problems is a unique experience.

            5 out of 5 stars More than a thriller.......2003-02-07

Moon's work on the Tu-144 stands to this date as the only book solely dedicated to the world's first supersonic passenger airliner. Although it suffers in places from being dated, particularly in reference to the advanced D model, the history and technical aspects of the program are well worth the read.

Moon was also one of the first to disclose the French government's role in the crash of Tu-144 #77102 at the 1973 Paris Airshow, through a very nice piece of detective work which is worth grabbing a copy by itself.

All in all, a valuable addition to a Russian or civil aviation buff's library.

5 out of 5 stars The first SST and one of the most ill designed airplanes.......2001-06-24

The race for the SST was a cold war challenge that pitted the US, Europe and the Soviet Union in a tight race to be the first to offer a supersonic airliner. This book focuses on the Soviet struggle to beat the west at all costs.

Many of the challenges faced by the Anglo/Franco team in developing the Concorde were also faced by the Soviet design firm Tupolev. The early soviet jet program relied on German technology and much of their work in developing supersonic fighters was based on the work of their gifted designers. Yet SST specs were a whole new science and much of their work was based on hit and miss using models, wind tunnels and small mock-ups. While the Europeans shared the expense of development the Soviets spent huge sums for an airplane that had to succede at all costs. This would lead to dangerous short cuts that would lead to the TU-144's doom.

The book is a great resource for any airplane buff and fan of the Concorde, it goes into great depth into the whole Soviet design philosophy and the way the government had to meddle with an aircraft that need many more years of work yet could have been among the worlds great airliners.

4 out of 5 stars Before the Concorde disaster.......2000-08-19

"Soviet SST" tells the more than the story of the ill-fated Tu-144, the Russian designed supersonic transport. Rather, it surveys the development of civil air travel in Russia as well as the intellectual hearts and minds behind Ruusian aerospace technology.

The Tu-144 was the product of an international race begun in the early 1960's to make mach-2 flight safe and practical enough for civilian aviation. By the end of the decade, however, the race petered out, with Russia being the only single country still harboring faster-than-sound dreams. America had backed out completely, while the Anglo-French effort (crossing international borders) seemed to take the jingoistic fun out of it. But the Russians pressed on. Their first prototype was impressive (on the outside, anyway) and it flew by the end of the decade. A full scale development, bigger and less elegant, seemed to expose the crudity of the Russian design For instance, Concorde's designers attacked the problem of overheating with a cryogenic system using the plane's fuel to keep the fuselage cool; The Russian answer seems less refined: large air conditioners - spaced thruought the fuselage - kept the plane cool. They also added unneccessary weight, and filled the plane with noise. What really cllinched it was the Tu-144's demonstration at the Paris, in which its slim hull split in flight like a toothpick or a pretzel stick. The disaster killed everybody on board, and a few parisians below. A few attempts at normal service also end in tragedy, and the plane was only resurrected recently, and only as a testbed.

The book "Tu-144" could have gone wrong for so many different reasons - whether gloating over Soviet boasts of techno-supremacy, or as apologia for it, or as a dry, neutral retelling of the Tu-144 story. And as the story of any airplane is intertwined with the stories of others, setting out the stucture of the Russian SST itself is no small challenege.

Happily, Howard Moon's writing - whether accurate or not - is cogent and compelling. It's not dry (especially when recounting the real Comrade Tupolev's efforts to design airplanes while a prisoner in the Gulag), nor does it rush to judgement about the plane's fate (the crack-up was caused by stress in turn resulting from an abrupt maneuver to escape collision with a French Mirage fighter). Neither does the author toss out technical jargon as if he were writing for the Discovery Channel. Mr. Moon knows his readers aren't savy aerodynamicists, but he doesn't condescend to them either.

This book should get some attention now with the anticipated demise of the Concorde, a plane that earns its owners less money than prestige. The Tu-144 also sought prestige and found no profit either.

              Description:
The Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR) series of instruments provides the means to obtain accurate measurements of sea surface temperature (SST), with a target total uncertainty of +/-0.3 K, 1@s. In this paper, we present validation results from 1 year of comparisons between 1 km resolution SSTs derived from the third instrument in the series, the Advanced ATSR (AATSR), and in situ measurements obtained during 2003 from the Marine-Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (M-AERI) over the Caribbean. Our dataset consists of 99 cloud-free matchups, 25 of which are two-channel SST retrievals (daytime) and 74 three-channel SST retrievals (nighttime). Validation results for both dual- and nadir-view SSTs for these matchups are presented. We demonstrate that the dual-nadir SST measurement difference (D-N) can be used to classify matchups and attribute the likely cause of a particularly high D-N to outbreaks of Saharan dust. Under conditions of 'normal' D-N, the bias and standard deviation of the two- and three-channel dual-view retrievals is -0.05 K and 0.26 K, and 0.02 K and 0.25 K, respectively. Dual-view SSTs obtained when the D-N is high over the Caribbean exhibit significant warm biases of 0.60 K and 0.32 K for two- and three-channel retrievals, respectively. Cool biases, with respect to the bias for 'normal' D-N, are observed in the nadir three-channel (N3) SSTs; for matchups with high D-N, the bias and standard deviation are -0.16 K and 0.31 K, compared with 0.14 K and 0.24 K for 'normal' D-N. The distribution of the nadir two-channel retrievals is non-Gaussian and the apparent accuracy is comparatively poor, demonstrating clearly the advantages of using a sensor with dual-viewing capabilities to obtain a superior atmospheric correction, particularly when data from an additional short-wave infrared channel (e.g. at 3.7 @mm) is not available. le.

                  Description:
Long-term monitoring of physical and biological parameters is essential for understanding the effects of El Nino on bird populations, particularly for small or declining populations. We examined the biological effects of El Nino activity from 1965 to 2004 using instrumental sea-surface temperatures from the Galapagos Islands and 20 years of census counts of the Galapagos penguin. Between 1965 and 2004, nine El Nino events were recorded of which two were strong and seven were weak. The two strong El Nino events of 1982-1983 and 1997-1998 were followed by crashes of 77% and 65% of the penguin population, respectively. The evidence suggests that the increased frequency of weak El Nino events limits population recovery. The 2004 penguin population is estimated to be at less than 50% of that prior to the strong 1982-1983 El Nino event. We discuss the biological effects of increased El Nino intensity and frequency within the context of a 6000-year record of El Nino influence and in the light of increasing anthropogenic threats operating after 1535, when the Archipelago was discovered by Europeans.

                    Description:
From 1998-2005, we collected 851 geo-referenced records of leatherback turtles, Dermochelys coriacea, from a volunteer network of commercial fishers and tour boat operators in Atlantic Canada. These data provide new insight into the spatial and temporal distribution of leatherbacks in temperate northwest Atlantic waters. Patterns in sightings data were consistent with the results of concurrent satellite telemetry studies, revealing a broad distribution of leatherbacks on the Scotian Shelf throughout the foraging season, and regular occurrence in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence in late summer and fall. Our results suggest inter-annual variation in leatherback abundance in Canadian waters, with reported sightings across all years peaking on August 5 (95% CI: July 25-August 15). Weekly mean area sea surface temperature (SST) had a significant effect on the number of leatherback sightings reported, independent of day of year, with each 1^oC rise in temperature increasing reported sightings by 12.5% (95% CI: 2.1-23.8%). Most turtles were reported inshore from the continental shelf break and mean SST associated with sightings was 16.6^oC (sd=2.3^oC). Our findings suggest that Canadian waters support one of the highest summer and fall densities of leatherbacks in the North Atlantic, and should be considered critical foraging habitat for this endangered species. Conservation efforts must be broadened to address threats to leatherbacks in this area.

                      Description:
Large-scale surface atmospheric convergence and divergence patterns in the Indian Ocean are mapped using high-spatial resolution, merged scatterometer wind vectors during 1991-2000. The convergence zone evolves to north of 15^oS as a result of convection promoted by warm (>28 ^oC) equatorial sea surface temperature (SST), and it exhibits strong intensity during boreal summer and winter. A divergence zone evolves to the south of 15^oS as a result of subdued convection caused by colder SST ( <24 ^oC) that reduces outgoing long-wave radiation; it exhibits enhanced intensity in the eastern Indian Ocean during boreal winter. The interannual variability shows that the divergence in the eastern Indian Ocean lags its western counterpart by 5-7 months. The convergence in the eastern Indian Ocean is stronger than its western counterpart during boreal summer. Relationship between Southern Oscillation Index and spatially averaged convergence time series indicate that the latter weakened during strong El Nino years 1994 and 1997. Spatially averaged divergence time series show a near-contemporaneous relationship with all-India rainfall, with a temporal lag of 1~2 months.

From the supplier: Chrysler Corp.'s transmission factory in Kokomo, IN, successfully boosted cast-aluminum transmission case output from its transfer lines following the installation of the Smith Super Taper (SST) quick-change stub-drilling system from TM Smith International Corp. The SST allowed the company to maintain the critical hole-pattern location at a steady 1.33 CpK and eliminated production interruptions caused by the need for tool-alignment or heat-galling.
