Book Description
Sun Microsystems was founded in 1982. Since then it has risen from an unknown workstation supplier to arguably the new economy's biggest brand. As we move to a networked world, Sun is there with the products and services driving the change.
But the Sun story is about more than software and hardware. It is about the tenacity and drive which helped Sun take on the big guns of Silicon valley and win. It is about the inspired and gutsy leadership of Scott McNealy. Unorthodox, radical, cool, even downright arrogant, Sun is the model start up success.
Now Business the Sun Way brings these lessons to any business or entrepreneur. From fantastic customer service to constant innovation, and from speaking your mind to betting on the future, these are the secrets for the next generation of winners.

Book Description
Financial market volatility plays a crucial role in financial decision making, as volatility forecasts are important input parameters in areas such as option pricing, hedging strategies, portfolio allocation and Value-at-Risk calculations. The fact that financial innovations arrive at an ever-increasing rate has motivated both academic researchers and practitioners and advances in this field have been considerable. The use of Stochastic Volatility (SV) models is one of the latest developments in this area.
Empirical Studies on Volatility in International Stock Markets describes the existing techniques for the measurement and estimation of volatility in international stock markets with emphasis on the SV model and its empirical application. Eugenie Hol develops various extensions of the SV model, which allow for additional variables in both the mean and the variance equation. In addition, the forecasting performance of SV models is compared not only to that of the well-established GARCH model but also to implied volatility and so-called realised volatility models which are based on intraday volatility measures.
The intended readers are financial professionals who seek to obtain more accurate volatility forecasts and wish to gain insight about state-of-the-art volatility modelling techniques and their empirical value, and academic researchers and students who are interested in financial market volatility and want to obtain an updated overview of the various methods available in this area.

Book Description
Can an overworked teacher possibly turn an unruly incident with students into an "opportunity for learning, growth, and community-building"? If restorative justice has been able to salvage lives within the world of criminal behavior, why shouldn't its principles be applied in school classrooms and cafeterias? And if our children learn restorative practices early and daily, won't we be building a healthier, more just society? Two educators answer yes, yes, and yes in this new addition to The Little Books of Justice and Peacebuilding series. They urge a focus on consequences rather than punishment. They insist that relationships-far more than rules-are central to building community, and that community fosters caring and belonging. They put up with no hypocrisy: teachers and administrators must live restorative practices, too. So how does it all work? Stutzman and Amstutz offer applications and models. Among them are class meetings for 5th graders; reintegration of 7th- and 8th- graders who were suspended; circle processes, which offer space for all voices to be heard, and also quiet tensions that are building; and community conferencing when trouble shapes up between students and neighbors. "Discipline that restores is a process to make things as right as possible." This Little Book shows how to get there.

Handbook of Moral Development
ASIN: 052101297X |
Book Description
Contemporary theories have generally focused on either the behavioral, cognitive or emotional dimensions of prosocial moral development. This volume provides the first comprehensive account of prosocial moral development in children. The book's focus is empathy's contribution to altruism and compassion for others in physical, psychological, or economic distress; feelings of guilt over harming someone; feelings of anger at others who do harm; feelings of injustice when others do not receive their due. Also highlighted are the psychological processes involved in empathy's interaction with certain parental behaviors that foster moral internalization in children and the psychological processes involved in empathy's relation to abstract moral principles.

Book Description
"Starkly essentialist reasoning sounds almost quaint by today's standards of gender equality. So it is with some surprise that general readers will encounter an intense and carefully reasoned defense of essentialism from the pen of one of America's best-known feminist legal theorists."
Women's Review of Books
"By critiquing traditional ideas about 'justice,' including economic theories about value, this provocative feminist jurisprudential scholar advances what she calls an 'ethic of care' and argues that 'if adjudication is to be just, then the goal of good judging must be both justice and care.'"
Georgia Bar Journal
Over the past decade, mainstream feminist theory has repeatedly and urgently cautioned against arguments which assert the existence of fundamentalor essentialdifferences between men and women. Any biological or natural differences between the sexes are often flatly denied, on the grounds that such an acknowledgment will impede women's claims to equal treatment.
In Caring for Justice, Robin West turns her sensitive, measured eye to the consequences of this widespread refusal to consider how women's lived experiences and perspectives may differ from those of men. Her work calls attention to two critical areas in which an inadequate recognition of women's distinctive experiences has failed jurisprudence. We are in desperate need, she contends, both of a theory of justice which incorporates women's distinctive moral voice on the meaning of justice into our discourse, and of a theory of harm which better acknowledges, compensates, and seeks to prevent the various harms which women, disproportionately and distinctively, suffer.
Providing a fresh feminist perspective on traditional jurisprudence, West examines such issues as the nature of justice, the concept of harm, economic theories of value, and the utility of constitutional discourse. She illuminates the adverse repercussions of the anti-essentialist position for jurisprudence, and offers strategies for correcting them. Far from espousing a return to essentialism, West argues an anti- anti-essentialism, which greatly refines our understanding of the similarities and differences between women and men.

A Clear Account of Care and Justice Issues.......2005-06-13
This book was greatly helpful to me as someone very interested in ethics of caring. The author had insightful discussions of views of others. She also offered well reasoned responses to important questions which continue to come up in seeking to integrate care and justice approaches. The bibilography of materials written up into the early 1990's is superb. I plan to give this book a central place in any '"Ethics of Caring" courses I teach.

Katz, Noddings and Strike.......2004-08-10
This is a unique book that is indispensible in a graduate course in educational (administrative, teaching) ethics. It is dominated by Noddings whose orientation is based on the notion of caring first put forth by Carol Gilligan. Though the book is still in print, it wants updating, as it is more than 5 years old (hence the loss of a star in the rating).

Book Description
Women's unpaid work at home has not concerned theorists of social justice, despite the fact that it renders women vulnerable to exploitation and hence to social injustice. Based on a critical analysis of three conceptions of work and women's work in the materialist tradition of thought - Marx, the domestic labour debate, and Delphy and Leonard - the author develops her own theory of women's work as care. By focusing on the material, psychological and gendered aspects of care, the theory elucidates how and why care is exploitative as long as it remains women's work, and what problems it poses for conceptions of social justice. It also enables the author to develop a striking new interpretation of the much discussed ethic of care: how it relates to considerations of justice and the place it has in moral and political philosophy.

Book Description
From all sides we hear that Americans are becoming increasingly
self-absorbed and disconnected, and that our interest in social and
civic responsibility is on the decline. A more encouraging profile
emerges in this study of Americans at work, at home with their
families, and in their communities. The book is based on a national,
representative survey of more than 3,000 Americans aged 25 to
74—plus in-depth interviews with adults drawn from the survey—to
find out what Americans mean by social responsibility.
The book explores the extent to which adults contribute time to
caregiving, social support, and financial assistance to family
members; the time given to volunteer work and financial contributions
to various causes, charities, and organizations; and how these
contributions are affected by job obligations. A major focus is on
age and gender differences, which shows midlife to be a transitional
time when civic activities increase as family obligations decline.
All told, the study adds a hopeful new voice to the overwhelmingly
negative debate about the current state of our civic and social lives.
