5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for EAs.......2007-09-12

I have been an Executive Assistant for 13 years and I found so much great advice in this book. I think this is a must have for anyone who has made a career out of being an assistant. I keep this book at work and refer to it all the time now. Money well spent!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on Organizing those Details Details Details, Interesting Personalities at Play.......2007-09-10

I'm not a organizational assistant, but I have to say this book has great techniques for everyone. Though, to be frank, this book got me more interested in the author's tellings of her interactions with a highly influential power broker (George Stephanopholous) than how to effectively organize time and resources.

4 out of 5 stars Covers It All.......2007-08-15

This is a great book for both those starting out in the assistant field as well as those looking to become more proficient in their current positions.

It covers all the topics with good, solid advice. Some of the topics covered are phone work, dealing with paper, types of communication, how to conduct yourself and many more. It even goes over when it's time to 'move on' and how to tell your boss you are leaving.

A very thorough book that I would recommend for anyone interested in this type of work.

5 out of 5 stars Be a Kickass Assistant: How to Get from a Grunt Job to a Great Career.......2007-01-09

Wow! Wow! Wow! This is the best book I've read about how an assistant can grow and not be just a ordinary assistant. I feel that it's a step by step handbook to becoming the greatest assistant anybody has had. I've learned LOTS from this book and sharing all this information with my colleagues. The way we should be well informed before communicating something to third parties, and also what we can and can't say. We are very sure that are school will have the best assistants around. Congratulations Heather Beckel

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Heather!.......2006-11-01

Before getting a job as an assistant at an International Organization, I had almost no idea what an assistant was supposed to do. I remember telling myself "I wish I had a guide for this!"
Well, Heather Beckel's book was the guide I needed! I am very indebted to her because her advice helped me during every step of the process, from my very first days at the desk to negotiating a raise.
This book helped me know what to expect, how to organize myself, what to be aware of, and how to read my boss.
For me, this was a very useful read and I recommend it for anyone who, like me, had little idea of what being a good assistant involved.

    Book Description

A decade of crises has reminded us of the fragility of the international financial system. Conventional wisdom holds that uncertainty is the basic problem of financial governance, and attempts to contain ambiguity have dominated recent financial reform efforts. Jacqueline Best, however, contends that ambiguity can play a valuable role in international political and economic stability. The stability of the postwar era depended, Best suggests, on a carefully maintained balance between coherence and ambiguity. In her view, the collapse of the Bretton Woods exchange-rate regime was caused in large part by the increasing rigidity of the system and its corresponding inability to accommodate ambiguity.

This is a novel argument in an area much discussed by economists and political scientists. Their debate has focused on uncertainty as a technical problem and transparency as the solution. Although such policies are presented as technical, Best demonstrates that they are also political, have cultural consequences, and may prove counterproductive. Rather than assume that transparency is the ultimate goal, Best argues, we must recognize that ambiguity is pervasive, substantive, and potentially constructive. To read this book is to comprehend more deeply the ways in which politics is fundamental to economic theory and practice and to understand why the economy requires political leadership in order to flourish.

            Book Description

In recent years, the development of biological pest control strategies has focused on the chemical profiles of insect-plant interactions. Plants exhibit an extensive range of defensive strategies, which include insect avoidance, deterrence and antibiosis. The need to overcome these vegetative defence responses has driven the evolution of an array of detoxifying mechanisms, which have become the hallmark of the phytophagous insects' chemical ecology. This volume presents the advances made on phytochemcial biopesticides, covering behavioural, chemical, biochemical and molecular levels of the field. The role of Phytochemicals in integrated pest management is also addressed, whilst discussing the problems and prospects of biopesticides for commercial exploitation. The volume provides a comprehensive overview for graduate students, research scientists and professionals in chemical ecology, insect-plant interactions, phytochemistry, chemistry and biochemistry of insects, and insect toxicology.

                    Book Description

This revolutionary book examines the biochemistry of endogenous ethylene biosynthesis and its role in the physiology of higher plants. Never before has such comprehensive attention been given to soil microbiota and their potential exogenous source of ethylene. This book provides chapters examining ethylene as a hormone, its role in plant physiology, sources and factors affecting microbial production of ethylene, and biochemistry of ethylene production by microorganisms. It also considers ethylene production in soil, the role of ethylene in symbiosis and pathogenesis, and its commercial application in agriculture. This book is extremely valuable in that it covers all aspects of ethylene sources, in-depth biochemistry and applications.

                        Book Description

The Handbook of Reference Methods for Plant Analysis is an outstanding resource of plant analysis procedures, outlined in easy-to-follow steps and laboratory-ready for implementation. Plant laboratory preparation methods such as dry ashing and acid and microwave digestion are discussed in detail. Extraction techniques for analysis of readily soluble elements (petiole analysis) and quick test kits for field testing are also presented. This handbook consolidates proven, time tested methods in one convenient source. Plant scientists in production agriculture, forestry, horticulture, environmental sciences, and other related disciplines will find the Handbook a standard laboratory reference. The Handbook was written for the Soil and Plant Analysis Council, Inc., of which the editor is a board member. The council aims to promote uniform soil test and plant analysis methods, use, interpretation, and terminology; and to stimulate research on the calibration and use of soil testing and plant analysis. This reference will help readers reach these important goals in their own research.

                          Book Description

Plants use large amounts of water in their growth, contributing to important consequences for agriculture and the distribution of plant communities. This book is a laboratory manual, and serves as a companion to the textbook, Water Relations of Plants and Soils, by Kramer and Boyer (1995). Much of our knowledge of plant and soil-water relations comes from thoughtful and careful measurements of the water status of the plant and its surroundings. This book emphasizes thermodynamic methods that can be reproduced at any time or place, indicating the energy used for water transport. The manual begins with a brief review of the relevant thermodynamics, followed by a description of principles and methods used in measuring chemical potential and its components, as well as the precautions necessary to insure success. The book also provides an explanation of the uses of the pressure chamber, thermocouple psychrometer, and pressure probes, as well as selected examples of experiments and references for further study.
