Book Description

Sex. Slang. Slumber parties. The preoccupations of adolescents with Asperger Syndrome are no different than those of other teens, but they can be much more confusing. The lack of social skills and ability to grasp conversational nuances that characterize AS make adolescence the most difficult life stage.

`Why can I swear in front of my friends, but not in front of the teacher?'
`Why do I have to pay attention when I'm not interested in what my friend is saying?'
`What does it mean to `go out' with somebody?'

Asperger Syndrome is characterized by a reliance on clear guidelines, and in adolescence the social guidelines become murky and confusing. In Asperger Syndrome and Adolescence, child psychologist Teresa Bolick presents strategies for helping the ten to eighteen-year-old achieve happiness and success by maximizing the benefits of AS and minimizing the drawbacks.

You'll Learn:
-How to work with the school to help the AS child learn and succeed.
-Strategies for turning common AS traits like preoccupations and routines into positive strengths.
-How to help the AS teen learn to manage unforeseen glitches with grace.
-The best ways to talk to your teen about friendship, love, romance, and sex.

Along the way, you'll be inspired by success stories of dozens of AS teens. With the help of this book, you'll learn that it is possible for an adolescent with Asperger Syndrome to achieve unimaginable success.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful Resource!.......2007-05-07

I haven't finished reading this book, but so far what I've read completely fits. My AS teen needs all the help he can get with organization, social skills, etc. This book gives real life examples and excerps from real parents and adolescents with AS. This book is helping me to better understand my child and to help him develop strategies and coping mechanisms so he can have a successful life. Definitely a good addition to my AS library!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - Must Have !.......2007-04-10

More and more books are addressing the problems ASD kids encounter in their latter years . Teresa Bolick has written a well thought out and structured book that answers many of the concerns that parents and teachers have. Would you need another book dealing with this area ? I would say...yes. It is such an important time in these kids lives that a comprehensive knowledge is needed by all those that care for these yound adults.

I have a son with Aspergers. This book is a great help!

4 out of 5 stars Asgerger Syndrome And Adolescence.......2007-01-10

It is a very good book that will help you understand how your AS. kids head works as well as gives good advice to help with their education. anyone with an AS. kid knows that educaters tell you that they deal with this all the time, and that is true only they really dont know what it is they are dealing with. Which makes it a great reading assignment for their teachers. You can't be afraid to call them on the carpet for what they dont know. Another good reading assignment is Freaks Geeks And Asberger Syndrome

5 out of 5 stars Great Hands-On Help for Parents, etc........2007-01-04

I found this book to be excellent in helping parents, teachers, and other interested individuals to help with the issues facing us as we raise kids who are on the high-functioning Autism or Asperger Syndrome spectrum. The ideas are easy to impliment and suggest things that would be useful for any parent or teacher of ALL children!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Worksheets are not activities........2007-08-05

I was disappointed in this book because I expected at least some activities. This is merely a collection of worksheets. Nothing about this book describes a hands-on approach or "real-world applications" for algebra. If you're looking for better worksheets then this is the book for you. However, it is misleading to call this an "activities kit".

5 out of 5 stars Ready to use worksheets.......2007-04-01

I've used this book A LOT in the math classes I teach: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, SAT prep. Many of the worksheets are designed for quick grading. (Typically the students are to decode a message as they world through the problems.) -- A great supplemental resource for helping students learn or review algebraic topics.

3 out of 5 stars Better than anything else I've seen.......2006-11-05

The worksheets are ok... And they are organized in different ways so that the students get several different ways of seeing the problems. I'm not so sure about "Real World Applications". Some of the riddles are fun, but they are fairly uninteresting and irrelevant to an urban high schooler.

5 out of 5 stars First Year Teacher.......2006-09-22

I am a first year Algebra teacher and I am so happy with this book. It has activities that are enjoyable and real world. It saves me time, which is so important

5 out of 5 stars A Real Lifesaver.......2005-05-06

I am a first year math teacher and I bought this book during my first semester. I wouldn't call this an Activity book with Real-World Applications. It's really a book of 150 very good worksheets. I give my students a worksheet from this book when I want them to review concepts I have already taught or for extra credit. It is a lot better than a boring practice worksheet. I recommend this book for every algebra teacher who wants to give their students a fun worksheet review to back up their lessons. It has really come in handy!

Book Description

Are your children becoming adults, or just adult-aged children? Jim Hancock takes a straight-forward look at the mindset of today's generations and their different life perspectives. He challenges assumptions and creates common ground to allow parents to train their children to accept responsibility and gain an adult perspective on life. RAISING ADULTS includes a thirty day guarantee that parents can change their relationship with their child by doing "nothing"--in other words, by not practicing certain toxic behaviors over thirty days. Jim also addresses ten distinctives he believes ring true for youth in today's culture including a sense of isolation, anger, and hopelessness. As a former youth worker, Hancock writes on a down-to-earth, relational level.

This book is really helpful, and a must have for anyone that works with the young people.

2 out of 5 stars this book is supposed to be for parents, but the writing is for teens.......2006-08-22

i found this book annoying. you can tell that mr. hancock is more comfortable speaking to youth because he can't seem to write decently for adults. i found the style so distracting and, at times, condescending, i finally had to quit after chapter 3.4 (numbering the chapters with decimals doesn't make your book cool, by the way). too bad, because it seemed like he had some valid points.

5 out of 5 stars Purposeful Parenting.......2000-11-28

As a college chaplain, I have the opportunity to see highly functioning, effective adolescents and young adults. I also happen to see those who are nowhere near ready to deal with the real world. Often it is their family life which has made the difference. This book is one of the best at assisting parents in making their efforts purposeful while encouraging us to ease up on the constant anxiety about doing the "worst wrong thing." As both a parent and a facilitator of parenting workshops, I enthusiastically recommend this book as one of the best resources available.

5 out of 5 stars I heard the author on the radio..........1999-11-19

I heard the author of this book (Jim Hancock) interviewed on the radio. Much of what he said there is the same as in his book. As a professional educator (I teach high school), I can heartily endorse this book. I would say that it should, however, be read by parents of small children. By high school, it can be too late to implement some of his ideas, although parents of high school students can also benefit from reading this book, because other of his ideas can still be useful.

Book Description

This text responds to the need increasingly felt by colleges and universities to be more accountable for how well they prepare students to meet the challenges of life and the world of work after graduation. Deans realize their school will attract more students if they can make stronger claims about the preparation their school gives. The big issue until now has been the lack of an available model and teaching materials for programs which want to offer a more practical transition course. This text provides the model.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Grauate Tool.......2000-05-10

The book READY FOR THE REAL WORLD is an excellent preparation tool for college seniors. The book offers information in career planning, personal life, community responsibilities, financial planning, and alum activities.

Written in an easy-to-read style, READY FOR THE REAL WORLD covers most of the elements that college seniors must consider from the more practical aspect of the budgeting of finances to the often neglected consideration of psychological changes that take place as one goes from the rather protected status of a student to that as a job applicant and employee.

This book is an excellent one for college classes which are offered at the end of the senior year to help prepare students for life after college, but would also be helpful to individuals who are seriously thinking about the transition from college to the "real world."

The book includes checklists and activities that allow readers to assess their status financially, psychologically, and personally. I highly recommend this book.

      Book Description

Prominent industrialist Stephan Schmidheiny, coauthor of the influential book, Changing Course: A Global Business Perspective on Development and the Environment, joins Argentinean business leader Federico J. L. Zorraquín and the other 123 members of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development in taking a close look at whether the workings of financial markets (stocks, bonds, banks, and insurance companies) do, or should, support sustainable development.

Largely descriptive rather than prescriptive, Financing Change is the first study to examine questions that will become increasingly important as populations burgeon and the developing countries enter financial markets. It examines these issues in separate chapters covering the viewpoints of the financial market participants: company directors, investors and analysts, bankers, insurers, accountants, and raters.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very nice first study !.......2001-01-16

This work asks the question if the world's financial markets and those who work in and around them are a force for sustainable human progress, or if they are against it. Related to this question two more further, fundamental questions are asked : Do the financial markets encourage a short-termist,profits-only mentality that ignores much human and environmental reality ? Or are they simply tools that reflect human concerns, and so will eventually reflect disquiet over poverty and the degradation of nature by rewarding companies that treat people and the environment in a responsible manner ?

In an attempt to find answers, the authors examined both the working of financial markets (established and emerging) and the roles of different key players in the financial community.

The findings are mixed but overall encouraging. For each player the present situation is explained in detail, showing clearly the limitations, the potential risks and potentials each player has related to creating sustainable development.

Overall a difficult topic in which the authors did very well to give a detailed present situation. Highly recommended as a first but good introduction to this topic.

          Book Description

This textbook will teach students in criminal justice programs the essential skills needed for effective police administration and management. Although it is written in a manner that graduate students would find stimulating and thought- provoking, its target audience is juniors and seniors. The author uses a three-pronged approach. Each topic is explored from a traditional, modern, and futuristic perspective. This approach combines theory and practical application in a manner that helps the students grasp all the ramifications of the issues at hand. To assist in this, commentary solicited from police administrators (from middle-management to police chief) that reflects their experiences and thoughts on the various issues is offered. In addition to the commentary, realistic and pragmatic examples are provided to clarify the concept and to show its practical applications.

This text was written to bridge the gap between purely theoretical and strongly practical texts. The use of theory to establish the concept and realistic illustrations and practitioners' perspectives to demonstrate the link between theory and reality gives this text a dimension found in very few texts. Furthermore, by using a three-pronged approach (traditional, reform and community or yesterday, today and tomorrow), readers are offered the basis from which the concepts originate, their transformation and possibly future implications, in a well-rounded manner allowing for a full view of the ideas and concepts.

Combines a theoretical and practical approach

Explores a variety of police administration issues from three perspectives, political/traditional, reform/modern, and community/futuristic.

          Realistic illustrations and practitioner's perspectives

5 out of 5 stars An essential reference -- covers all but how to ride!.......2002-10-09

From the pages of Practical Horseman, this book gathers articles together that come to the point.

If you don't have anyone around to ask, this book can probably give you the answer. It contains at least 100 articles from the magazine. Everything is in it -- conformation analysis of the horse for various disciplines and what to look for in the optimum mount -- bitting theory -- pulling manes, tails, braiding tails -- leg wraps: types, why and how -- how to clip, various styles and why you use them -- feeding: pasture management, feeding vitamins & minerals and their benefits and consequences of excesses. A comprehensive spectrum of topics that will answer all your questions.

          This one's a treasure.
