Customer Reviews:
A Solid Effort!.......2001-02-17
This cheerful and snappy little book offers a host of helpful suggestions for using your time and talents. You will appreciate Alan Axelrod and Jim Holtje's humor, practicality, and common sense. Their advice - which applies to people at all organizational levels - ranges from planning timely and productive meetings to using the telephone wisely. They also discuss voice-mail etiquette, the best way to start your day, travel tips, and how to improve your reading speed and skills. You will benefit from the suggestions for managing your personal time, too. Supervisors can use this book to help their employees manage time more skillfully. The book is short and to the point, and happily devoid of verbosity. We at getAbstract.com recommend it as a text that will help you save time, calm frustrations, increase efficiency, multiply successes, impress others, and please yourself.
How to Extend your day.......2000-04-25
This book is a good source of information to making more time in your day. I t does not touch on somethings i would have expected in a time management guide. It does not show your how to plan ahead for the next day or the next week. I feel that planning a head is a great deal of what time managemnt is about. I feel that this book could work for those people who do not plan far in advance but it has not done much in my planning part of time management.

Another Useful Perspective.......2005-03-24
Neely, Adams & Kennerley caught my attention.
They note that the various performance measurement / management systems, such as Balance Scorecard to name one of many examples cited, despite their usefulness, are only partial or point solutions to the whole performance measurement / management problem. The Performance Prims attempts to remedy this by providing an integrative framework which is more comprehensive and more comprehensible (in how its component part fit together) based on Stakeholder Satisfaction, Stakeholder Contribution, Strategies, Processes and Capabilities - all neatly tied together in a visually appealing configuration which they call the Performance Prism. I suspect the PP is also a partial solution, but it does indeed build upon its predecessors and goes much further. While we might consider the Balanced Scorecard as a K Generation approach. PP is definitely a K+1 Generation approach. I suspect, unfortunately, it is a little too ahead of its time, but, in due course, will receive the attention it deserves.
I can't help but comment on one particular part of the book which resonates with me because of the myriad of strategic and operational planning texts I have read none of which have come to grips with what I see as THE fundamental thread of insight into producing something truly useful and practical: the difference between means and ends; the way such means and ends can be built into systems which have components operating at different levels (organisations and their subunits); and, most importantly, the relationship between the two. Many have tried, some have almost succeeded, but not quite. The clue is often "Where to Start".
At page 164 - 166 (2002 edition), the authors talk about "where to start" and, in doing so, note that "One of the great myths (and fallacies) of measurement design is that performance measures should be derived from strategy. ... Strategy, however, is not about destination. Instead, it is about the route you choose to take -how to reach the desired destination". They then go on to focus their first steps on ends / objectives based on identifying stakeholders and what constitutes stakeholder satisfaction.
Such bold statements about strategy deserve attention. I think they are right - despite the fact that strategy has a myriad of intepretations (which the authors themselves concede) which may distract you from the boldness and the intent of the statement. I think this is the clue I have been looking for in driving ever closer to a performance measurement / management text which, perhaps building on the Performance Prism, will be the seminal work for many years to come. The understanding of what ends are and how they are stated both implicitly and explicitly is the clue.
The Performance Prism is a marvellous book with a wealth of information. It is an extremely useful source book of performance related insights. I suspect and I hope it will get greater and greater attention in the future as others develop it. Generation K+2 is built on Generation K+1, not Generation K. I look forward to more books from these authors which focus on the PP. I hope that they expand on their case study chapter which saw the use of PP by DHL UK. Not quite at the level of sophistication as some of the Balanced Scorecard case studies, but, the BSC is grounded in an extraction of insight from innumerable cases over a ten year period. I think, in due course, PP, if it can move from measurement to measurement and management will be even better.

Ultrastress.......2006-02-25
Scientists have statistics for how much food plants grow in what environment over time. They have experimental results for what and how much plants grow in what environment. So we know it used to be growing population went along with growing more garden and field crops, by clearing more land. Since the mid-20th century it goes along with making each plant grow more. In the 21st century it goes along with making lots of breeding decisions. For plants face warmer, unhealthy environments of too much carbon dioxide and ozone in the air and salt in the soil.
More carbon dioxide and ozone in the air; saltier soil; and warmer temperatures aren't the only stresses making our world unhealthy. These four are well studied. The problem is experiments and research look at stresses one by one. But in the real world stresses work together to strain our world. So we need paper trails on what happens when stresses gang up together.
Plants have ways of dealing with worldwide stresses. Some are choosing to put more growth into some parts over others; letting all parts grow, but in changed ways such as changed numbers of leaves; and using stress-busters such as antioxidants and polyamines against ozone and salt damage, and heat shock proteins and membranes against high temperatures. One problem is they generally handle more carbon dioxide better than they do greater ozone, saltiness and warmth. The other is plants strong on stress-busters tend to be small, slow-growers that put out less and smaller fruits and tubers.
Scientists also have ways of dealing with stressed plant environments. Some are breeding, developing cultivars, and genetic engineering. They're using these ways to get faster, greater harvests from garden and field crops. They're also trying to grow garden vegetables and field crops in more climates and places. The problem is breeders favor fast-growing big harvesters over stress-busters. That might change. For drought, as one of many stresses, is a real concern in the face of worldwide fresh water shortages. Also, growers grow particular garden and field crops, to make money and support families. So there's a place for irrigation, which salts soils, and for chemicals such as fertilizers and herbicides/pesticides. That's what happens when growers don't match soils with crops, when they change soils to fit crops.
The book begins with a helpful preface and set of abbreviations. It ends with an appendix list of plants; an appendix comment on main field and vegetable crops of the United States; a complete, up-to-date set of references; and a good index. In between, Seth G Pritchard and Jeffrey S Amthor organize the ten chapters well, with convincing examples, facts and figures. It's fortunate for readers CROPS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE is so well organized. For the writing is clear, but technical throughout.

Book Description
This book summarizes recent research on the physiology of yield of all the world's major field crops. The authors focus on the development of crop yield, the physiology underlying this process and the interactions between this physiology and the environment in which the crops develop. The need for the integration of the knowledge available for each of these crops has never been greater. In view of the increasing demand for food supplies of the world's growing population, the development and improvement of crop yield will play a crucial role in the future.
