Book Description
Mary Ann Glendon offers a comparative and historical analysis of rapid and profound changes in the legal system beginning in the 1960s in England, France, West Germany, Sweden, and the United States, while bringing new and insightful interpretation and critical thought to bear on the explosion of legislation in the last decade.
"Glendon is generally acknowledged to be the premier comparative law scholar in the area of family law. This volume, which offers an analytical survey of the changes in family law over the past twenty-five years, will burnish that reputation. Essential reading for anyone interested in evaluating the major changes that occurred in the law of the family. . . . [And] of serious interest to those in the social sciences as well."—James B. Boskey, Law Books in Review
"Poses important questions and supplies rich detail."—Barbara Bennett Woodhouse, Texas Law Review
"An impressive scholarly documentation of the legal changes that comprise the development of a conjugally-centered family system."—Debra Friedman, Contemporary Sociology

Book Description
Decomposition of organic matter is a major ecosystem process involving an array of different organisms, including bacteria, fungi and invertebrates. The main objective of this book is to provide students and laboratory instructors at universities and professional ecologists with a broad range of established methods to study plant litter decomposition. Detailed protocols for direct use in the field or laboratory are presented in an easy to follow step-by-step format. A short introduction to each protocol reviews the ecological significance and principles of the technique and points to key references. Although most methods are described for freshwater ecosystems, many will work equally well in the presented or slightly modified form for studies in marine and terrestrial environments.

SAS for Linear Models
ASIN: 1584881119 |
Book Description
Despite its many origins in agronomic problems, statistics today is often unrecognizable in this context. Numerous recent methodological approaches and advances originated in other subject-matter areas and agronomists frequently find it difficult to see their immediate relation to questions that their disciplines raise. On the other hand, statisticians often fail to recognize the riches of challenging data analytical problems contemporary plant and soil science provides. The first book to integrate modern statistics with crop, plant and soil science, Contemporary Statistical Models for the Plant and Soil Sciences bridges this gap. The breadth and depth of topics covered is unusual. Each of the main chapters could be a textbook in its own right on a particular class of data structures or models. The cogent presentation in one text allows research workers to apply modern statistical methods that otherwise are scattered across several specialized texts. The combination of theory and application orientation conveys ìwhyî a particular method works and ìhowî it is put in to practice. About the CD-ROM The accompanying CD-ROM is a key component of the book. For each of the main chapters additional sections of text are available that cover mathematical derivations, special topics, and supplementary applications. It supplies the data sets and SAS code for all applications and examples in the text, macros that the author developed, and SAS tutorials ranging from basic data manipulation to advanced programming techniques and publication quality graphics. Contemporary statistical models can not be appreciated to their full potential without a good understanding of theory. They also can not be applied to their full potential without the aid of statistical software. Contemporary Statistical Models for the Plant and Soil Science provides the essential mix of theory and applications of statistical methods pertinent to research in life sciences.

Binding: Spiral-bound
ASIN: 1423582780 |
Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A097923. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Advanced anatomy instruction is required in nurse anesthesia programs by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA). This study provides a descriptive analysis on how anatomy is taught in nurse anesthesia programs in the United States with special emphasis on regional anesthesia. A survey consisting of 18 questions regarding anatomy course curriculum and regional anesthesia training was mailed to the nurse anesthesia programs (n=87) accredited by the COA. Supporting evidence for content validity and reliability was obtained. A total of 78 programs (90%) responded to the survey. The majority of programs 49 (63%) teach a specific course in human anatomy with 14 (18%) of those programs teaching a combined anatomy and physiology course. The mean hours spent in lecture was 5 hours per week. More variability in the lab hours existed with a range of 0-20 hours, a mode of 0 hours, and a mean of 2 hours per week. Twenty-two (28%) of the programs use human specimens with 10 (13%) using prosected specimens, 2 (3%) using dissection only, and 10 (13%) using a combination of both. Of the programs using human specimens, 17 (22%) have instructors demonstrate regional anesthetic techniques in situ, and 3 (4%) of the programs afford the students the opportunity to practice regional anesthetic techniques on the specimens. Computer assisted instruction (CAI) is used by 14 (18%) of the programs with many more planning to incorporate this new technique in the near future.

Book Description
Reliable methods for monitoring and assessing soil quality are a prerequisite for successful soil bioremediation projects. The fifth volume of Soil Biology presents detailed descriptions of selected methods for evaluating, monitoring and assessing bioremediation treatments of soils contaminated with organic pollutants or heavy metals. Traditional soil investigation techniques, including chemical, physical and microbiological methods, are complemented by the most suitable modern methods, such as the use of bioreporter technology, immunological, ecotoxicological or molecular assays. Feasibility studies for bioremediation treatments complete the manual. Easy-to-follow protocols with step-by-step procedures, lists of the required equipment and reagents as well as notes on the evaluation and quality control allow immediate application. Short introductions to the principles and objectives help to assess the field of application of each procedure.

Book Description
Our lack of knowledge of the organisms dwelling in soils and sediments and of their roles in ecological processes constitutes a major barrier to understanding how ecosystems operate. This topic has both academic and applied relevance. Thus, in order to forecast the implications of perturbations in a site on both the species present and the ecosystem functioning, whether direct (e.g. pollution or physical disturbance) or indirect (e.g. climate change), methods need to be available that can be used to ascertain what organisms are present in a sample. This book provides an authoritative manual of the techniques now used for different organisms. It has been developed as part of a project initiated by the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS), supported by UNESCO. It covers both soil organisms and those inhabiting freshwater and marine sediments, from microbes (bacteria, algae, fungi, etc.) to macrofauna (earthworms, nematodes, molluscs, etc.). The chapters are arranged by organismal groups and have been written by recognized specialists from the USA and Europe. The book makes a major contribution to the literature and is indispensable for soil and aquatic biologists and ecologists, as well as those with a broader interest in biodiversity and environmental sciences.

Book Description
With growing concern about the protection of soil quality and biodiversity many countries have established regional and national programmes to monitor soil quality. This book reviews the theory and practice of a range of the various microbiological methods used within these programmes. The
first section gives an overview of approaches to monitoring, evaluating and managing soil quality. The second section provides a practical handbook with detailed descriptions of the methods. The methods are described in chapters on soil microbial biomass and numbers, soil microbial activity, soil
microbial diversity and community composition, and plant-microbe interactions and soil quality. Finally, a census is given of the main methods used in over 30 European microbiological laboratories.
