2 out of 5 stars no substance, a very quick read.......2007-03-29

i borrowed this book from a local library and is very disappointed after reading it. this book is mostly big words and no substance. there is no detailed real life or even theoretical solution to any of the problems he proposed. for example, section 7.4 is captial allocation at Deutsche Bank, sounds very intriguing, but when I actaully went to page 160, author only used less them half page to sum up Deutsche's strategy as Captial and Liquidy, no substance or detail whatsoever.

I finished this book in less than 3 hours and learned nothing except a few buzz words, and that is about it.

The previous commenter gave this book 5 star. take that 5 star with a huge grain of salt.

5 out of 5 stars Read it before all the other Basel ii books.......2006-01-11

I found this to be an excellent read. It was extremely eye opening.

Chorafas focuses his attention on the processes, decisions, and actions which are needed to execute an appropriate compliance strategy effectively. His observations and recommendations are based on real-world data.

The material is carefully organized within sixteen chapters whose subjects range from "Economic Capital Defined" to "Software which can help in IRB implementations"

This text had the potential to be completely dry. Yet this book reads easily. It is well-written, understandable, and generally clear to professionals without a background in finance or economics.

Therefore, I highly recommend this book to all decision-makers and professionals responsible for compliance in all banks.

I also recommend this book to professionals who are looking to heal risk and compliance wounds from the past and present.

    Well-done!

5 out of 5 stars Easy, clear and fun.......2001-12-17

Not only is the book easy to read and understand, but the author has a sense of humor and history. There are facts salted into the usually amusing examples that, at least to me, seem to relate to past events. For example, when he explains partnerships, the sample of an agreement is for a partnership called Leaks Anonymous. It is a plumbing business and the partners are Glenda Liddy, Eduardo Hunt and, ____ McCord... I think from the Watergate burglary.
Anyway, the book gave common sense advice and was really useful. I recommend it highly.

      Book Description

Arusha National Park in northern Tanzania, known for its scenic beauty, is also a battleground. Roderick Neumann's illuminating analysis shows how this park embodies all the political-ecological dilemmas facing protected areas throughout Africa. The roots of the ongoing struggle between the park on Mount Meru and the neighboring Meru peasant communities go much deeper, in Neumann's view, than the issues of poverty, population growth, and ignorance usually cited. These conflicts reflect differences that go back to the beginning of colonial rule. By imposing a European ideal of pristine wilderness, Neumann says, the establishment of national parks and protected areas displaced African meanings as well as material access to the land. He focuses on the symbolic importance of natural landscapes among various social groups in this setting and how it relates to conflicts between peasant communities and the state.

This book does a nice job providing an overview of competition between wildlife and humans in 3 east African countries. Using 3 case studies, Ofcansky provides a context for the colonial decisions that shaped game preservation. The book is a fast read and provides a stimulant for future exploration into the topic.

        Book Description

Political scientists have long been concerned about the tension between institutional fragmentation and policy coordination in the United States bureaucracy. The literature is rife with examples of agencies competing with each other or asserting their independence, while cooperation is relatively rare. This is of particular importance in policy areas such as biodiversity, where species, habitats, and ecosystems cross various agency jurisdictions.

Bureaucratic Landscapes explores the reasons for the success and failure of interagency cooperation, focusing on several case studies of efforts to preserve biodiversity in California. The book examines why public officials tried to cooperate and the obstacles they faced, providing indirect evidence of policy impacts as well. Among other topics, it examines the role of courts in prompting agency action, the role of scientific knowledge in organizational learning, and the emergence of new institutions to resolve collective-action problems. Notable findings include the crucial role of environmental lawsuits in prompting agency action and the surprisingly active role of the Bureau of Land Management in resource preservation.

Your purchase of this book will help provide the means for us to spread the 'good news' about archery and bowhunting and ensure that, long after you've left the woods, others will experience the adrenaline rush and genuine satisfaction shared by all who've hunted with stick and string. Thanks.'

          Book Description

Do cattle destroy a wilderness? Do Hollywood films and fund- raisers support valid wildlife rehabilitation projects? Does a wilderness need to be devoid of people in order to be "saved"? In this hard-hitting book, Dan Brockington argues that the dominant approach to wildlife conservation in Africa has more to do with Western views of the environment than about what is appropriate for African people and herds.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Saving an African Wilderness.......2003-01-20

The book makes a useful contribution to the conservation and development debate by tracing the history and the implications of the gazetting (closing off) of the Mkomazi grasslands of Tanzania. But rather than just tracing out this history and its sorry implications, the author goes further to make the normative claim, buttressed by evidence, that the gazetting of Mkomazi was inappropriate, indeed wrong since the existing populations were adversely affected by the loss of land and associated colonial and post colonial extortions. Maasai herders should not, therefore, have been excluded from the Reserve. An impressive body of evidence is brought to bear on the central question of effects of exclusionary conservation on local populations in this part of East Africa. Extensive fieldwork and archival investigation has been carried out, including survey-based human ecology measurement of pastoral welfare and livelihoods. The author has a sparse, clear and whimsical writing style. The book stands up well as an empirical study, although the broader literature and `debates' on African livelihood systems and resource access could be addressed more.

Legitimacy in International Society addresses collective legitimization of emergent norms at international meetings and its effect on state behavior. Drawing mainly on constructivist approaches in International Relations and social psychology, Isao Miyaoka discusses the international and domestic sources of legitimacy and the basic conditions under which collective legitimization matters for norm adoption. Three case studies examine Japan's responses to wildlife preservationist norms against high seas driftnet fishing, scientific whaling and international trade in African elephant ivory.

                    Book Description

David Shepherd, internationally known artist and deeply committed conservationist, first learnt about Africa from books about the big game hunters of the 1930's. Returning to England he took up painting, initially specializing in aviation art. David Shepherd: 'Then, in 1960, the Royal Air Force commissioned me to do two paintings in Kenya. When I arrived they said to me, "We don't want paintings of aircraft - do you do local subjects such as elephants?" - and that's how it started.'

Not long after this, in the Serengeti National park in Tanzania, he came across the corpses of 225 poisoned zebras, the macabre handiwork of a poaching gang. On this traumatic day in 1960 David became an active conservationist. Over the years, the two strands of David's life were to unite ever more strongly. As his popularity as a wildlife painter grew, he became increasingly aware of the fragility of these animals' existence. In 1985, this led to the formation of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, which allows him to repay some of the pleasure and success he owes to the creatures he paints.

A stunning collection of the best of David's wildlife art, this book is a testimony both to his unique talents as an artist and to the beauty and majesty of the animals he portrays. There are fascinating descriptions of trips he made to shoot game - not with a gun, but with a camera. The paintings which follow are as full of life and light as the landscapes he paints. Complemented by color sketches, and handwritten notes by the artist himself, they are a celebration of his subjects and his work.
