Very funning book, insightful.......2006-07-27
I read this book in the summer of 1977 while working as a flight instuctor in Batavia, Ohio (Cinncinnati). I was very abused by my father and at that time in my life I was still very meek. This book opened up the possibilities (as) to how a person can act with confidence (even if it is contrived) and how people will react to the bravado you show. I actually fell out of bed because I laughed so hard while reading this book. It is one of my top 10 books of all time. If you are a shy person you should read this book. Is this guy realated to Frank (Catch Me If You Can) Abagnale?
The best business book that tells it like it really is!.......2005-01-30
I love reading success books. I have read alot of them in my time, and I have a pile of the very current success books on my night table, ready for me to start reading them as soon as I get to them. Yes, I love reading these books, but I have learned to take the advice these books give with a grain of salt. Most of these books are filled with the "serve the customer" and "give the other guy what he wants and he'll give you everything you want" philosophy. This philosophy sounds good in theory. However, out in the real-world business jungle I have found that by the time the other guy gets what he wants he has forgotton your name!
Then along comes Robert Ringer with this classic book. Unlike all the other success books I have ever read, this book tells it like it is. Ringer points out in this book that whether you and I like it or not, the world of business is not played on a nursery school playground. It is played in a brutal jungle where the name of the game is to finish with the most chips(money) in your lap. You either accept this reality and play the game to win,or get out of the business game altogether.
Ringer also takes on the two cornerstones of most success books--"postitive thinking" and "working hard". Ringer's philosophy demolishes these two traditional theories.
If you're used to positive thinking, new-age, give and give to the other person and hope you're going to be paid in the end kind of book, then Winning Through Intimidation isn't for you. However, if you're tired of losing, buy this book and read it ten times.

Full confession - I never meant to take Robert J. Ringer's "Winning Through Intimidation" seriously. On a recent visit to my parents house I found a tattered, 30-year-old hardcover edition of this book on a dusty bookshelf in the storage room. The corny title caught my eye, so I grabbed it, thinking it might be fun to read for a laugh.
It wasn't just the age of the book that I figured would make it ripe for comedy (though I do wonder if Ringer's message to women that they too could use his philosophies and strategies - to "sell" themselves as wife material to a man - has been edited out of more recent editions). It is the fact that I find most sales technique books to be hilariously bad. I almost always find myself questioning whether the authors have ever worked a day in sales in their lives, since most such books offer advice that would only work if A) every client you ever dealt with was a complete and total moron and/or B) your clients just happen to follow the hypothetical "scripts" included in most of these books word for word.
Imagine my surprise to find that "Winning Through Intimidation" (which is a misnomer, "Winning Through Not Letting Yourself GET Intimidated" is a more appropriate, if less colorful, title) is filled with great fundamental, common sense advice for anyone in the field of sales. It is obvious that Ringer has spent a great deal of time in the trenches - he accurately points out many common mistakes made by salespeople (spending WAY too much time on a particular account because it makes you feel busy, as opposed to because the account will realistically ever actually buy anything, not realizing the importance of having all agreements with clients in writing and keeping a paper trail of your communications, believing that your client is ever going to have YOUR best interest at heart, thinking that "closing the deal" is the end-all-be-all goal of sales, when actually *getting paid* is far more important). This would be a great book to give to a person new to the field of sales to insure that he or she only develops good habits. I question how "useful" this book is to the more experienced salesperson, only because if a salesperson hasn't already realized through experience that the philosophies and techniques from this book are valid, then they are probably beyond help.
Perspective.......2003-09-05
In all the self-help books read, I believe this is by far the best. It's a practical guide to how to get through this thing called life and profit from it. All it takes it perspective, patience and a watchful eye of one's enviornment, socio-economically. It's an old one, cheap and still it's lessons are current and useful.
Buy this book and don't neglect to read Looking out for Number 1. That's the book I'm on now.

Ringer is great. He gives you lots of very real information on how to get things done, but he does it in an entertaining way versus the real preachy way many authors do. Not to mention that a lot of his stuff is more pragmatic than other authors as well, much less theoretical. His stories about his own misadventures are great too!

this book left a very strong impression on me...I have read maybe 350 books on trading in the last 12 years ...and this is without a doubt one of the best...especially where they talk about trading in different time frames ...just a really good, thought provoking piece of work...I loved it.
Market Evaluation and Analysis for RealTick Trading.......2005-01-14
I know nothing about trading. By that I mean that all my skill or lack thereof has been through experience. This was the first book I purchased and read on the subject in order to refine what little I understood about the stock market.
The first half of the book seemed great. I was very encouraged by both authors' obvious knowledge in the field of trends and their sections on market psychology (which in retrospect seemed a bit simple-minded, but OK).
However, the last few chapters on MACD, stochastics and other phenomenon proved to be poorly written and unorganized. Throughout the volume I was bombarded with advertisements for RealTick, the authors' favorite trading platform that would "do everything" for me.
By the end I was skipping ten pages at a time. For the novice or uneducated this might be a good read. Definitely buy it online if you must have it. The book store sticker price cost me $55, which according to the authors' wisdom would have been better spent buying some QQQQ.

I read many books and some of them are very interesting and some other are poor. I bought this book with a positive expectaction due to the well-known success of the authors, but I was disappointed.
From the first to the last page the entire book tries to sell the RealTick platform. It seems to me the only reason this book had been written.
The authors treat the reader like a dumb-stupid-idiot with statement like this: "why calculate rsi by hand if RealTick do the math for you?", or "fortunately the RealTick platform can calculate MACD". Every software package can do these things.
I suspect that the methods explained in the book, are poorly explained to leave the (ignorant) reader unsatisfied and with an urge to buy the RealTick platform...
If you are an idiot buy this book and the RealTick platform :-)

I rated the authors' previous book "Rule of the trade" with four stars and wrote the title of my review on Amazon as "Concise but covers +95% of rules I need to bear in mind". However, I had been very disappointed by this new one.
The authors are definitely gurus in trading and trading psychology. Nevertheless, their explanation of TA tools are extremely clumsy and disorganised, in particular the sections on Stochastics and MACD. That made me very frustrated because over half of the book was about TA from which I really could not get any significant benefit from reading it. Those regarding system trading, trading strategies etc are badly written as well. I just cannot recall and apply what I had read into my daily trading practice. There's not a holistic and organised picture about trading, and not to mention swing trading (a term you surprisingly scarce in a book with a title "for swing trading") at all.
In a word, a sub-standard trading book not to be recommended.

Beginning in the Americas, Warman depicts corn as colonizer. Disparaged by the conquistadors, this Native American staple was embraced by the destitute of the Old World. In time, corn spread across the globe as a prodigious food source for both humans and livestock. Warman also reveals corn's role in nourishing the African slave trade.
Through the history of one plant with enormous economic importance, Warman investigates large-scale social and economic processes, looking at the role of foodstuffs in the competition between nations and the perpetuation of inequalities between rich and poor states in the world market. A range of vulnerabilities are highlighted that are usually neglected. Assessments that focus on the horrifying potential of bioterrorism directly targeting people are commonplace. This book is exceptional because indirect impacts on human health and welfare through challenge to the security of food supplies are the focus. These urgently need to be recognised and made subjects of planned investment to counter the threat. Examples of past state-sponsored and independent actions are discussed. The evolution of biological (chemical defoliant) systems for controlling plant growth with unambiguously humanitarian aims is shown to have resulted in a range of counter terrorist uses. These experiences provide a background for discussion that draws upon experience in tropical and temperate regions and spans the potential for harm offered by naturally occurring plant pathogenic viruses targeting food plants or forestry. Management options are addressed and the need for protection is set against the risk of discouraging biotechnological advance.

Based at Aleppo, Syria, it is one of 18 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), which is an international group of representatives of donor agencies, eminent agricultural scientists, and institutional administrators from developed and developing countries who guide and support its work. The CGIAR seeks to enhance and sustain food production and, at the same time, improve the socioeconomic conditions of people through strengthening national research systems in developing countries. ICARDA focuses its research efforts on areas with a dry summer, where precipitation in winter ranges from 200 mm to 600 mm. The Center has a global responsibility for the improvement of barley, lentil and faba bean, and a regional responsibility — in West Asia and North Africa — for the improvement of wheat, chickpea and pasture and forage crops and the associated farming systems. Much of ICARDA's research is carried out on a 948-hectare farm at its headquarters at Tel Hadya, about 35 km south-west of Aleppo. ICARDA also manages other sites where it tests material under a variety of agroecological conditions in Syria and Lebanon. However, the full scope of ICARDA's activities can be appreciated only when account is taken of the cooperative research carried out with many countries in West Asia and North Africa. The results of research are transferred through ICARDA's cooperation with national and regional research institutions, universities and ministries of agriculture, and through the technical assistance and training that the Center provides. A range of training programmes is offered, extending from residential courses for groups to advanced research opportunities for individuals. These efforts are supported by seminars and publications and by specialised information services.
