      Book Description

Drawing on one-to-one guided conversations with disabled children and follow-up interviews with their parents and siblings, the author takes an in-depth look at the effects of disability on disabled children. Approaching this neglected subject through the disabled child's perspective, she considers children's understanding of disability and ways of negotiating the experience of disability in their everyday lives. She also examines perceptions of their relationships with professionals and their knowledge and views of service provision; aspirations for the future and their views on the type of support that might help achieve them; and siblings' perceptions of the effects on them of having a disabled brother or sister.

Informed by the social model of disability, Kirsten Stalker identifies and draws out the implications of her findings for social work and health services. Illustrating effective ways of communicating directly with disabled children, this will prove an invaluable resource for academics, policy makers and practitioners working with disabled children in health and social care settings.

        Book Description

Think that if you work hard, you will automatically be rewarded for your efforts and get everything you want from your job? Think there's no politics at your workplace? Think again.

From mega corporations to small, family-run businesses, from private sector to government employers, from highly profitable companies to non-profit organizations, and from executive suites to administrative cubicles, every workplace environment brings together groups of individuals who are forced to interact with each other on a regular basis.

And whenever there's interaction between people in an organization, there's politics.

In this new, insightful guide by employment expert Bruce Grossman, you'll discover just how to navigate the politics of your particular working environment, with the goal of making your workplace experience more positive, productive and pleasant - the 3P Approach.

        From Strategies to Solutions

The 3P Approach aims to help you improve your work experience by gaining control over it. Based on his 20+ years as an employment lawyer who has seen multitudes of negative workplace-politics scenarios, the author teaches you how to develop the strategies you need to face (and hopefully resolve) your specific workplace challenges.

You'll learn how to understand, motivate and deal with the most difficult workplace personalities (whom we've all worked with or for), including the Bully, the Screamer, the Charming Backstabber, the Ruthless individual, the Control Freak and the Nitpicker - and how to turn your interactions with them into more positive and productive encounters.

Ever wonder how you are perceived at your workplace - and how much impact that perception has on how you're treated? The author will take you through the steps you need to maximize your positive image and to allow others to see you as a valuable and productive part of the workforce.

Want to better understand your manager and develop a smoother working relationship? Wish you could get through to your employees? This volume will help non-managers understand how their supervisors think, and guide managers to motivate their employees, making the workplace less stressful and more positive for everyone.

Ever think about what you really want from your job and why you never seem to get it? Perhaps the answers lie in developing political strategies specifically targeted at your personal workplace goals. This book teaches you how to set realistic work-related goals and offers suggestions for how to achieve those goals, including creating positive "buzz" in your workplace about you and the work you do, doing your job effectively, and seeking and receiving positive reinforcement for your work.

Workplace Politics is essential for a variety of audiences:

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lucid directions on how to rule.......2006-07-24

This book offers the middle-aged middle manager a strategy for surging ahead instead of sinking in an ocean of uncontrollable organizational forces. Author Peter Block provides strategies for countering the negative effects of being enmeshed in hierarchy and bureaucracy. Reactions to that experience, especially fear, lead to bureaucratic management styles that leave everyone in the company - sometimes even the CEO - feeling trapped and frustrated. The book wanders around and bogs down here and there, but we find that its advice - which strongly pushes self-awareness, vision and autonomy in the service of others - could muster middle management's entrepreneurial spirit.

        1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-06-21

Unfortunately, Block lives in a "what if" fantasy. Politics is a "real world" subject.

5 out of 5 stars The Fundamental Text on Empowerment.......2000-07-21

Fourteen years have passed since the original publication of this book, and we are now in what is called the post-empowerment era. Nevertheless Block's text remains its fundamental status, and its relevance and value have in no way diminished.

"The Empowered Manager" would be on any short list of the most important management books ever written if only on account of its classical exposition of one of perhaps the most significant idea in late twentieth century management practice. In addition, every page contains sage practical advice of benefit to anyone who wants to be more than a slave or a drone at work.

Check out Bergmann et al's "Everyone a Leader" and Hirschhorn's "Reworking Authority" for some more recent developments in this area. But do not fail to read this book: its wisdom is inspirational, and Block's fine style makes it a treat to read.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for any person in a leadership position.......1999-09-01

Block gets to the bottom of what leadership is all about -- Love and Trust. Love for one another, the love to serve, the love to help others rise. The courage to do what would cause traditional, stoic managers to turn their noses up and jeer. His words, however taboo by traditional management standards, are priceless. I always felt this way, but was so glad to see Block put it in print. I realized I was not crazy after all! My ideas were not so weird or unconventional :-) There is so much more. READ THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars This is a "must-have" for anyone in a leadership role........1998-06-20

The Empowered Manager is a "classic" in the full sense of the word. It belongs in the book collection of anyone who hopes to lead effectively in an organizational setting.

Personally, reading this book was a transforming experience in my career. It helped me to understand the nuances of effective leadership -- that the work environment we create through our words and behavior is something we have the power to change in very positive and profound ways.

        A great book!

                    Book Description

First and foremost, HIV disease presents a profound medical problem affecting a person’s health and longevity. Yet health and health care cannot be viewed outside of the social context. We cannot, William B. Rubenstein, Ruth Eisenberg, and Lawrence O. Gostin insist, lose sight of the fact that the questions involved in living with HIV disease are often human rights issues that are negotiated through the legal system. Can a hospital refuse to treat me because I’m infected? Can my insurance company terminate my coverage? Will the government deport me? Who has a right to know of my health status?

The health policies, practices, and programs generated by the HIV epidemic also give rise to legal questions: Can doctors be forcibly tested and removed from practice if they are infected with HIV? Can hospital patients be required to have HIV tests? What are the responsibilities of a pregnant woman with HIV infection? Do school children have a right to information about HIV disease?

In fact, legal questions affecting HIV-positive people have grown tremendously complex, cutting across multiple areas of life as well as of law. Using the question-and-answer format common to all ACLU handbooks, this book makes clear how to take advantage of the laws designed to secure the rights of people who are HIV positive.

The authors have divided the book into four sections. The first five chapters provide background information about HIV disease and about the public health response to the epidemic. The second five chapters deal with day-to-day issues: health care decisions, private and public insurance, available public benefits, planning in consideration of future incapacity and death, and issues of HIV within families. The third section considers discrimination against people with HIV in accessing health care, in places of public accommodation, in the workplace, and in the housing market. The book concludes with a look at HIV in schools and prisons and among immigrants and drug users.

2 out of 5 stars Basic Web Information.......2004-06-07

The "Grantwriter's Internet Companion" is a short compendium of online sources for grant money. The book is targeted mostly toward primary educators, and (despite the title) others will probably find it of limited use. I'm in psychology higher education, although I did find a few useful tips. Primarily, however, the book serves as a basic primer for seeking internet information. The first chapter talks about websites and search engines (oddly, it does not include google). Subsequent chapters discuss in more detail some education-specific sites. In reading this book, I was hoping to find some new and "secret" information imparted; instead, it directs the user to fairly well-known sites.

If you haven't used the web much, then this book will probably be somewhat useful (I'd bump it up a star for these users). However, persons who are already web-savvy will likely find little new information here.

                    Book Description

In At Peace in the Light, Dannion Brinkley continues his unique spiritual exploration that began in his phenomenal national bestseller, Saved by the Light, where he revealed the two near-death experiences that left him with an extraordinary sense of perception. Here Brinkley describes, with absolute candor, his struggle to become accustomed to his disorienting psychic ability, and his decision to offer comfort to those dying in hospices.

In his poignant and personal style, Dannion shares heartwarming stories of his ability to give comfort where it is needed, and demonstrates that the dying often have enhanced psychic ability and a clarity of vision that can make death more graceful for everyone involved. He also shares lessons in achieving what he calls the panoramic life review, and instructs readers on awakening and enhancing their own skills of perception, while providing the language to deal with their own and their loved ones' mortality.

For the hundreds of thousands who found comfort and understanding in Saved by the Light, here is Dannion Brinkley's new message of inspiration, guidance, and the unlimited opportunity for spiritual growth and renewal.

5 out of 5 stars Great Follow-up to his First Book! .......2006-09-22

Brinkley takes us a little further along on his life journey with more messages for life. His stories and insights are both entertaining as well as inspirational.

I suggest that you read his first book before this one so you have a better understanding of where he has come from and what happened to change his life.

1 out of 5 stars Not very good.......2005-10-09

Repetitive and largely pointless. Not well written. Apparently the author's spell-checker malfunctioned too.

                    4 out of 5 stars Dannion's Excellent Sequel, but Caution: Non-Biblical themes.......2004-10-10

"When thirteen Beings of Light tell you to do something, it is hard to say no." (Page 157, "At Peace in the Light," in which Brinkley answers his critics regarding his plans to build stress reduction "The Centers." Also a very funny quote!)

Dannion Brinkley writes an excellent follow-up on his hit best seller regarding his two NDE's (near death experiences). This is the fellow who was struck by lightening , clinically dead for 28 minutes before being revived, met by a "Spirit Being" both times he died, and received subsequent visions from these "Beings of Light" regarding the creation of his stress reduction "centers."

Click on the link to "see all my reviews" for my take on his *first* book. Interestingly, he appeared to use very few direct quotes from the original book, choosing instead to rephrase descriptions previously written about. For example, Brinkley quotes Dr. Raymond Moody on both page 183 of "Saved by the Light" and also on page 168 of "At Peace in the Light" as follows: "You don't have to die," he said. "Stay for me. I need your help." Very original!

He masterfully uses a brief, well-written forward by James Redfield, another expert in the field. Brinkley co-wrote his riveting sequel with talented author, Paul Perry (who also co-wrote with him on his first book). Also interesting: He only waited about a year after completion of his first book to finish his second.

Brinkley, now himself a talented author, again discusses the boxes of knowledge, leaving some future predictions for your review. Working with both average citizens and those dying in a hospice setting, he brings home the themes of:

                    * Control of our lives to make a positive change for the future;
                    * A spiritual evolution, in which we understand that what we do to others affects us deeply (Christians will recognize this as the "law of sowing and reaping");
                    * His desire to dispel all fear of death is a key motive in his writing of these book; and, lastly,
                    * Brinkley shares my views on alternative medicine, particularity testifying to the healing powers of chiropractic (which has also proved useful for me).

He adds an account of how he felt useless and used, merely using his talent to help gambling friends win at the horse races or on bets on sports events! (Masterful and compelling.) A family friend, whose father had been a slave, was dying and came to see him. This was touching and a contrast to his other "so called" friends.

Let me repeat a few key points you may have missed up until this review:

I view Brinkley as a credible and believable psychic: My research was unable to uncover any independent testimony to discredit or call into question his sweeping claims that he was able to see into the private lives of people by merely touching them.

This true ability is not unlike that of the late Rev. Roland buck, whose claims that he got messages from Angels of God about peoples' private lives has NOT been refuted or discounted, even roughly twenty-five (25) years after publication of "Angels on Assignment," the classic book, in which Charles and Frances Hunter took down the testimony of Pastor Buck, an aging pastor who wasn't trying to write any book or turn a dollar. (I highly recommend "Angels on Assignment.")

Brinkley again mentions religion. However, as in the first book, red flags go up, which should be of interest to the Judeo-Christian reader:

                    * In his sequel, here, Brinkley continues to omit any mention of Jesus' role in all of this, supporting previous claims that there are many paths to righteousness, on page 202 of his first book.
                    * Again, he doesn't even touch on the topic of Hell, which is certainly mentioned in both the Old and New Testament Bible.
                    * He repeats his themes of leaving the body, assuring a visiting Japanese journalist that it is "quite normal." (Page 176; She gets the shock of her life!)
                    * Use of "necromanteums" (page 172), where people make contact with the dead.

Christian readers should know that magical arts, which author espouses, are strictly forbidden: Exodus 22:18; Leviticus 19:26, as is "necromancy," that is, the speaking to the dead: Deuteronomy 18:11. Could the "Beings of Light" be fallen angels, demons masquerading as God's Holy Angels? "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works." (2nd Corinthians 11:14-15)

As with his first book, which I also reviewed, I can not in good conscience give it the top rating of five stars for these reasons, but I still consider it among the few books among the "required reading" category, not only because he probably really saw something, but, and let me emphasize, I feel that his heart is right and pure, and many of the things he says are true, and VERY beneficial (not to mention outright fascinating!).

However, for a more balanced approach to the dark side of the Spirit World, I also recommend "The Beautiful Side of Evil," in which Johanna Michaelsen writes in this reliable perennial, equally a classic, her experiences with leaving her body under the influence of evil spirits and the journey back home to rid herself of the occult and witchcraft. Also, read your Bible, separating truth from fiction, to keep from going astray and overextending yourself, in the same way drug users and thieves must later "pay the piper" for that initial, but forbidden, thrill.

I highly recommend Dannion Brinkley's book, and extend my good will towards him for his momentous effort and fervent concern for his fellow man.

5 out of 5 stars finally beleiving in something.......2004-05-25

as a beleiver in only myself to change my life and suffer all the consequenses of all my own actions, this book confirmed what i already thought about most things in life, or at least hoped. i knew this life here was a test, to see if we can struggle and overcome saddness and pain and still come out positive, not scorned, not miserable, but wiser and stonger. i knew it couldnt get worse than this, here on earth.i learned of the review of your life you have upon dying and have deceided you must see that first so you can see what and how you were at that moment, so you can feel truly sorry or humility or embarresed, or ashamed at your actions or words, you get to feel what pain or sadness you caused others although not realizing it at that particular moment, and feel deeply sorry.not untill then will you go to the next level. you actually judge yourself. thats why its so important to be a good loving person,to treat people as you want to be treated, you get what you give,to realize the only thing that really matters is leaving this earth with the feeling of being loved, its the only thing you can take with you. asnd every one you loved will be waiting on the other side happy healthy and ready for a new journey. infinity. i like dannion cant wait to get there.no more fear of the unknown, no more worrying about forcing myself to beleive in god or i wont go to heaven.i have faith in myself and my actions i make in this screwed up world, and hope they are right and learn from them if there not.keeping hatred and negativity far away.

5 out of 5 stars Perceptions on LIFE.......2003-11-24

Reading about near death experiences alters my life in that I have a deep sense of peace and I now know what is truly valuable in life. It also teaches me that every one has different opinions and are entitled to express them without ridicule. Knowledge is one aspect of life that is important. Therefore, I must add that reincarnation WAS in the Bible, but the church took it out because it did not have as much control over the people. There are still subtle references contained within as any extensive scholar of the Bible could attest to. If it was perceived as it was meant to be.

                              Description:
Verticillium wilt, caused by Verticillium dahliae, is widespread in intensive strawberry (Fragariaxananassa) growing areas. It is effectively controlled in site preparation by soil fumigation with methyl bromide but with the ban on ozone-depleting chemicals, which applies to methyl bromide, there has been an international effort to find alternatives, which will protect the crop from planting to fruit harvest and in runner production. These include chemical replacements and alternative disease control strategies. In this study, biological control, based on single and dual inoculation with a commercial arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculant containing Glomus spp. and a commercial plant growth promoting rhizobacterial inoculant containing a Bacillus sp., has been evaluated in the field. Control plants inoculated with V. dahliae had wilt symptoms, and marketable fruit yield was significantly reduced by approximately 60% whereas the yield of plants from runners inoculated with the AMF or PGPR inoculants did not differ significantly from that of the non-inoculated controls. Generally, marketable fruit size and plant and root fresh weight were not significantly different in the inoculated plants compared with the non-inoculated controls. There were no significant differences in the protection afforded by the AMF and PGPR inoculants and dual inoculation did not give greater protection than single inoculation.
