Book Description

Environmental degradation in Latin America has become one of the most pressing issues on the international agenda. The volume began to crescendo when space shuttle astronauts photographed five thousand fires on a single night in the Brazilian Amazon state of Rondonia in 1985, and grew shrill when rubbertapper Chico Mendes was shot in 1988 trying to stop ranchers from clearing rainforests near his home in Acre.
Since the early 80s, we've heard pleas from rock star, environmental groups, and scientists, asking us to focus our attention on environmental destruction in Latin America-oil spills, lax NAFTA driven ecological standards, endangered indigenous cultures, and the destruction of the rainforests. This volume presents an overview of the pressing nature of these issues and the scope of the problems and seeks to focus our attention on environmental destruction in Latin America by examining several types of environmental crises in Latin American countries. With discussions of the World Bank, urban pollution, NAFTA, toxic pollution in maquiladoras, headline grabbing environmental disasters, drug trafficking, and the 1992 Rio Earth Conference, this book will be a must read for anyone interested in the future of Latin America or world ecology.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive, enlightening and beautifully written.......2004-09-20

I've been in business, been involved with ecology and cultural survival and I've traveled in and among the countries and cultures of Latin America for over 25 years. I read this book on a recent trip to Costa Rica and I am so impressed with it that I am purchasing 25 copies and sending them to all of the managers of my mutual funds. How this action fits in with a review on a book concerning the plant's ecology may not be clear to you, but if you read some of the other descriptions of "Trouble in Paradise", then you may understand. For people concerned with the future and with the environment this book provides tremendous relief.

(From Planeta Journal) -- A must read for anyone interested in environmental issues and must read for anyone interested in Latin America, Trouble in Paradise: Globalization and Environmental Crises in Latin America (Routledge, 2003) combines academic research with a regional travelogue.

Written by J. Timmons Roberts and Nikki Demetria Thanos, this book reviews the critical issues run the gamut from green to gray.

Chapters review pollution havens on the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, the hazards of an urban sprawl and the rise of protests particularly via the Internet. This is no surprise as co-author J. Timmons Roberts is a co-founder of the Environment and Latin America Network (ELAN).

Excerpts from Trouble in Paradise

To become sustainable, Latin America needs real democracy to create the leverage for its citizens to demand a cleaner environment and the services they need to survive. (p. 4)

Contact informs strategic advocacy work on one or both sides of the North-South divide. Lives can be changed. The same can be said of academic programs in the region and of linkages between universities and other schools ... Rather than merely observing these issues from afar and wringing our hands, we need to be engaged. Institutions can be changed. (pp. 205-206)

Study and travel in Latin America and connections between communities and universities across the North-South divide can create lasting bonds and new directions of change. And we need to call for a drastic rethinking of priorities in international aid and finance. Aid needs to support solutions which address social and environmental problems at the same time. (pp. 210-211)

5 out of 5 stars Readable, comprehensive, and thought-provoking analysis.......2003-09-16

This is the book we have all been waiting for: a definitive analysis on the state of the environment in Latin America, how it got that way, and --- best of all-- what is and can be done to remedy the crises. Trouble in Paradise offers the coherence, comprehensiveness, and depth sorely lacking in environmental studies about Latin America. Informed by long-term academic as well as political engagement with these issues, Roberts and Thanos make a varied set of long-term environmetal crises and struggles surrounding them come to life for both students and specialists. They trace how common political, economic and social features structure these case studies and thus bring Latin America's environment to the forefront of discussions about globalization.

Its readability, price, length (200 pages of reading) and content make this volume excellent for both undergraduate and graduate classrooms. It will get students excited about both Latin America as well as environmental struggles and the inequalities that surround them. The case studies they cover are great jumping off points for imporant related issues such as free trade, inequality, ethnicity, social movements, urbanization and local politics. I will be using it at my desk and in the classroom for years to come!

      Book Description

Introducing Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) -- a quantitative approach to assess the performance of hedge funds, funds of hedge funds, and commmodity trading advisors.  Steep yourself in this approach with this important new book by Greg Gregoriou and Joe Zhu.

"This book steps beyond the traditional trade-off between single variables for risk and return in the determination of investment portfolios. For the first time, a comprehensive procedure is presented to compose portfolios using multiple measures of risk and return simultaneously. This approach represents a watershed in portfolio construction techniques and is especially useful for hedge fund and CTA offerings."

I am always on the lookout for new quantitative methods to complement my portfolio optimizers. I found this approach pretty novel. It seems to do a good job at identifying efficient funds from the non-efficient ones. Great stuff, thanks guys.

5 out of 5 stars MADE A FORTUNE IN CONSULTING USING THIS SOFTWARE .......2006-06-08

The minute I got the book I went directly to the CD to do all my consulting work. Thanks to the CD I made over $125,000 US in one week consulting using this software and providing DEA scores of every hedge fund in my hedge fund database for a well-known fund of hedge funds. It paid off my mortgage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very basic book.......2006-03-28

The book applies an operations management method - data envelopment analysis - to evaluate the performance of hedge funds and CTAs. DEA is a multi-variate non-parametric linear optimization method that quantifies the relationship between multiple inputs and outputs. The method has been widely used in operations management, but in finance, investment management and portfolio selection, its use is nascent.

The authors provide a rapid introduction to DEA. I found it shallow. For anyone needing a comprehensive, deeper, and more correct understanding the material, I would strongly recommend Zhu's "Quantitative Models for Performance Evaluation and Benchmarking", where the careful derivation of the various approaches offers a good understanding of the functional definitions of his approach. Chapters 6 to 9 provide the empirical analysis of performance using hedge fund and CTA data. The introductions are brief and most of the text is tables with results. I would prefer to have seen a deeper explanation of the methods and why particular methods are more appropriate for the selection of particular performance assessment. The multivariate approach is unique and potentially useful when optimizing a portfolio given certain sets of multi-collinear constraints. What this book lacks is a deeper analysis of this particular application.

The book comes with a CD that contains Zhu's DEA-Solver. This handy Excel add-in is useful in creating DEA analysis.

I have used this approach for portfolio performance evaluation and found Zhu's previously mentioned book more useful than this book. In my work, I wanted to find that combination of assets with the most efficient upper and lower partial moment distributions in a potential portfolio. It worked reasonably well, slightly better than a regression approach. For the novice DEA user, my recommendation is to use this book as an outline, but refer to Zhu when creating the analytical framework and applications.

        Book Description

This book will become the bible of regulatory reform. No broad, authoritative treatment of the subject has been available for many years except for Alfred Kahn's Economics of Regulation (197O). And Stephen Breyer's book is not merely a utilitarian analysis or a legal discussion of procedures; it employs the widest possible perspective to survey the full implications of government regulation--economic, legal, administrative, political--while addressing the complex problems of administering regulatory agencies. Only a scholar with Judge Breyer's practical experience as chief counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee could have accomplished this task. He develops an ingenious original system for classifying regulatory activities according to the kinds of problems that have called for, or have seemed to call for, regulation; he then examines how well or poorly various regulatory regimes remedy these market defects. This enables him to organize an enormous amount of material in a coherent way, and to make significant and useful generalizations about real-world problems.
Among the regulatory areas he considers are health and safety; environmental pollution, trucking, airlines, natural gas, public utilities, and telecommunications. He further gives attention to related topics such as cost-of-service ratemaking, safety standards, antitrust, and property rights. Clearly this is a book whose time is here--a veritable how-to-do-it book for administration deregulators, legislators, and the judiciary; and because it is comprehensive and superbly organized, with a wealth of highly detailed examples, it is practical for use in law schools and in courses on economics and political science.

          Book Description

The degree to which the traditional concept of property can be adjusted in order to accommodate basic constitutional concepts such as freedom and social duty, is analysed by the author. The focus is placed on recent reforms in the land law of Germany and South Africa. Remarkable similarities in the history, structure and interpretation of German and South African property law and constitutional law are indicated and a link between private law, constitutional law, land reform and legal comparison is established. This is of particular significance for the implementation of the constitutional objectives of land reform by the South African judiciary and legislature. It furthermore provides an overview of the intricate system of constitutional property protection that has been developed in German law.

4 out of 5 stars Basic text on Regulatory reform in Japan.......2001-12-28

The 1990s of Japan is labled as the lost decade. if one faces the impediment, he should try to overcome it. Jpanaese government has tried various measures from deficit budget, which amounts ro over 110% of GDP now, to regulatroy reform or deregulation. regulatory reform has been around the world since late 1970s. Japanese one seems not that different from others. But it's been implemented in peacemeal. this book is intended to explain the reason. there are numorous books on Japanese regulatory reform in the 1990s. but as far as I know this is one of two book available in English on the market. the other was also published by Brooking Institute. but they are different in the scope and targets. this book aimed at explaining regulatory reform process in Japan in somewhat broad political context, while 'Unlocking Bureacrats Kingdom' copncentrated on case by case approach. authors of this book counclude that the reform efforts has faced rigidity of existing political interest groups consisting of bureaucrats, zoku politicians, and clients of regulators. so the lagging performance of regulatory reform is notning suprising.
Though I agree with the conclusion, they neglect the reason why once capable bureacrats play evil role and the economic conditions since the 1970s which have drived the rigid political system to accept, at least in dis guise, the reform. and the focus of regulatory reform has laid in distribution, transport, and financial sector. but there is no detailed explanation of them. in this regard, if u are interested in regulatory reform in Japan, I recommend OECD Report on Regulatory Reform, Japan, and Money Rules (from Cornell).

          Book Description

In his 1982 State of the Union address, Ronald Reagan vowed to return power to the states. Rather than take the more traditional route, he chose to instill the "new federalism" through intergovernmental regulatory relief. This book assess the policy's success and the problems it has caused. The book is based on several cases studies from different policy areas. Intergovernmental relations, nuclear energy policy, and environmental policy are discussed in detail. The authors have drawn extensively on public documents as well as interviews with members of congress, executive department officials, and those involved with special interest groups.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice work.......2003-11-21

This is a great book if you are interested in the policies of the Reagan administration and the effects of the decision making made by Reagan. The interviews and documents are extremely useful in detailing the feeling of the era. If you are a student of either history or poly sci, this is a very good source for research on the government and the activities of the 1980's.
