Book Description
This text is a treatment planner and theory guide for therapists working from systemic and postmodern approaches. Unlike existing resources, this treatment planner provides a means to directly integrate family therapy theory and practice. By providing treatment planning strategies along with complete overviews of specific theories, the book provides a remedy for the common "missing link" between theory and practice. The purpose of this book is to fill the ever-widening gap between formal training in theory and actual practice in managed-care dominated workplaces. The text covers 11 of the most widely used family therapies providing a summary for each theory and then specific strategies for developing a treatment plan.
Customer Reviews:
A good text book for overview of the major approaches.......2007-09-21
This textbook was recommended by my professor, and I find it a good tool for therapists who are looking for very basic theoretical information on the various therapies for families out there. Good examples and vignettes make its application simpler.
Good for beginners.
Great Book. High Price.......2007-04-05
This book is tailored for California MFTs. It covers the major theories that are presently in use. It gives clear vignettes and has excellent treatment goals for each stage of therapy. It is a necessity to have this book when studying for the Standard Written and Written Clinical Vignette exams.

Balanced, informative and empowering.......2007-10-25
I bought this book at the onset of my first pregnancy, and now the second time round, this is the only book I ever look through. I'm constantly enlightened and impressed how informative and approachable the whole tone of the book is. As the title suggests, it integrates conventional and alternative appproaches to pregnancy. However, this doesn't mean that it presents just one intermingled outlook. Instead when presenting each facet and symptom of pregnancy, it will give a highly informative but readable overview, and impartially present various solutions - from traditional medicine, to common sense health tips to alternative therapy (herbal teas, acupuncture, etc). Also included are meditations or relaxation exercises, as well as short anecdotes of women's personal experiences - but all these are clearly distinct from the text itself. So you feel as a reader that you are enjoying a tapestry of approaches rather than one dogmatic theory. And all this is written in an empathetic and empowering way to the pregnant reader.
Aside for the usual overview of pregnancy - which it covers thoroughly, the book contains an excellent section on nutrition, a chapter on yoga (which isn't my speed anyway!) as well as a useful appendix with links for further reading or resources. Most certainly a worthwhile choice for any woman who likes having a broad knowledge of what's out there during this important time in her life.
High Quality Choice if interested in Alt Med AND mainstream ways.......2007-09-30
I got this book a year ago -- I was lucky to be in a pretty progressive bookstore at the time that we decided to start 'trying', and the staff there said they'd heard good things about it. Without that rec, I doubt I would have bought it because it doesn't have that name-recognition or reputation. I'm so glad I did. All the basics of pregnancy are here, in the same depth as a book like Dr.Sears's, etc, but in addition you get really thorough explanation of alternative medicine applications. It's a perfect resource if you really try to straddle both worlds. So don't be put off just because you may not have heard of this book! It's excellent! It was my only pregnancy book all thruout and I never felt that I needed to look at anything else.
Excellent !.......2007-04-04
I love this book. The author combines conventional medicine with alternative therapy and the result is fantastic. I asked my traditional ob/gyn many questions and he had no knowledge of alternative views and I found it very frustrasting. This book proves thoughtful insight to pregnancy that is often over looked by traditional ob/gyn.
THE pregnancy book.......2007-01-04
We've collected a shelf full of books during my wife's (first) pregnancy. While all serve a purpose, the Whole Pregnancy Handbook has become our go to book for just about everything. It's great information written in an easy to digest style that makes sense from a holistic and conventional medical point of view.
Great reference for my second time around.......2006-10-30
I checked this book out of the local library to look a up a couple of things before my first OB appointment. I had loaned out most of my own pregnancy library and just needed a little information. Any old pregnancy book would do, so my selection was kind of random. I ended up reading it almost cover to cover. Now that I have to return the library's copy I need to purchase my own.
I thought, in contradiction to the earlier reviewer's statements, that the book was highly detailed and very informative. What it lacked was the hysteria making format of other popular books on the subject. It was certainly organized differently so that might have thrown her off.
The information was well balanced and fairly comprehensive. I really enjoyed the section on nutrition and the chapter on prenatal yoga has certainly motivated me to find a class. What I liked most though was the reassurance that even at my advanced age (over 35) that I had a really good chance of having another healthy, uneventful pregnancy. Wonderful book!

Book Description
Despite calls for a renewal of family values and the proliferation of corporate work-family programs, the goal of achieving a healthy balance between the demands of work and a satisfying family life remains elusive. Dr. Parasuraman, Dr. Greenhaus, and the contributors to this well-balanced and thoughtful volume examine this increasingly prevalent social dilemma from a "stakeholder perspective." They see work-family tensions as a multifaceted social issue, and they examine the nature and consequences of these tensions from the viewpoints of individuals, employers, consultants, counseling professionals, and other service providers. Their inclusion of legal, cultural, international, and research perspectives and recognition of the unique concerns of vulnerable groups, such as nonexempt employees and ethnic minorities, add to the breadth of coverage. Academics in the social and behavioral sciences, executive decision-makers in government and business, human resource professionals, and employed men and women interested in achieving work-life balance will find this volume insightful, stimulating, and useful. The editors have arranged their book into five parts and 21 chapters. Part I provides a broad overview of the environmental factors impacting work and family. It then identifies the critical issues and challenges facing individuals, families, and employees in managing the complex interdependencies between work and family roles. In Part II they provide a view of the issues from the vantage point of specific stakeholders. Part III concentrates on the role of culture in shaping ideology, policies, and practices concerning work and family and the relationships among them. Part IV examines the impact of career development programs on employees and their families. It also discusses the effectiveness of alternative career tracks, various usages of work-family benefits by women and men, and the roles employers and employees can play in legitimizing alternative career paths. Part V concludes the book by examining the cultural barriers to achieving more effective integration of work and family, and by analyzing the appropriate role of key stakeholders in addressing work-family problems.

Book Description
In this comprehensive synthesis of the history, theory, and practice of services integration, Sharon Lynn Kagan, with Peter R. Neville, explores why past efforts to reform the human services system have had only isolated triumphs and marginal impact in improving the quality of life for children and families. Tracing the history of human services in America from the colonial period to the present, Kagan analyzes the underlying assumptions, barriers, and strategies that have characterized the services integration movement and offers new directions for future social service reform.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent work/life reference guide with exercises.......2000-04-08
This collection of articles and exercises provides "cutting edge" resources in the work/family and work/life areas. The articles cover everything from flextime to recognition of the work and family issues faced by expatriates. This information is becoming more and more important in organizations throughout the world. A glance at the annual Fortune or other magazines that focus on the best companies to work for indicate the attention being focused on these issues. Interestingly new graduates are now asking these questions about the companies they are considering working for--and companies that ignore this may find themselves less able to hire the professionals they need (and the market for these folks continues to get tighter). The guide is expensive, but collecting up the work captured within it would be incredibly time-consuming and the coverage might not be as thorough. Although it is probably intended more for a human resources professional or teacher conducting training or informing employees and managers about work/life issues it could be a useful guide to assess your own ways of balancing and integrating you work and nonwork life. There could be application for a parent or church group to use the guide as well. If you hired a consultant to inform you on these issues and/or a trainer to conduct this training it would cost a lot more and you would have to bring them back again and again. One thing that was not addressed in the guide was what I will call "family friendly backlash" found in books like The Baby Boon, but I think this guide moves beyond this controversy by focusing on work AND life, not just work AND family. It is important to recognize that these are not just issues for people with small children, but issues that impact all working people.
Book Description
Praise for Commodity Fundamentals
"Commodity Fundamentals is THE book for investors looking to enter the commodity markets. This informative guide is a welcome addition on the subject and is a must-read for commodity investors."
-Jim Atkinson, President, Guinness Atkinson Funds
"Ronald Spurga's Commodity Fundamentals is an illuminating and very useful guide for the subject. A welcome addition to any business library."
-Robert F. Himmelberg, PhD, Dean, Fordham's Graduate School of Business Administration
"A straightforward introduction crafted for the individual on the mechanics of commodity trading. The author efficiently negotiates the often confusing yet very topical commodity trading world for the individual."
-Terence A. Mullervy, Finance Director, Glencore UK Ltd.
Commodity Fundamentals provides you with the in-depth insights needed to make commodities trading a profitable, integral component of your overall trading activities. Written by Ronald Spurga, a Vice President of ABN AMRO Bank and longtime veteran of the investment banking wars, this straightforward guide arms you with the information you need to succeed in the highly profitable commodity marketplace-whether you are a trading veteran, a relative newcomer, or anywhere in between.
Customer Reviews:
just an introduction.......2007-04-27
Granted, the title does say Fundamentals. And the book contains one chapter on technical analysis. But it is only one out of 25 chapters. Strictly, to a purist who wants fundamental analysis, technical stuff is voodoo. I concur. But such is the subversive allure of the technical approach to many, who might covertly glance at the recent price history of a commodity. Even while pursuing a fundamental approach. So perhaps Spurga felt pragmatically compelled to give it a brief mention.
Overall, the book is indeed about looking at the fundamental factors that drive the supply and demand of numerous key commodities. From cattle to silver to oil etc. You get 24 chapters that are a synopsis of these factors. Actually, if you have been generally interested in financial matters, and not necessarily focused on commodities, there will be little new. Much of the text is enough to get you started in understanding the field. But don't regard it as enough to begin trading in a fundamental fashion. Start peering at more indepth texts.
Look elsewhere.......2006-11-10
Far too introductory and brief. There is very little new material or actionable strategy here.
Not That Good.......2006-09-07
I do not normally like to post a poor review for a book, but after getting my copy of "Commodity Fundamentals" yesterday, I wanted to express my opinion.
My first complaint is that the title is misleading. To me, the word "fundamental" is a term of art in commodity trading meaning "attempting to buy and sell according to supply & demand factors." Although there is a crude overview of fundamentals, there is also a chapter on technical analysis (albeit one about five pages long).
The book is divided into sections based upon commodity type (metals, energy, grain and tropicals), and each section is divided into chapters. I was chagrined that wheat, corn, and soybeans were lumped into one chapter on grains. Those are much more important commodities (both in terms of monetary investment and open interest) than, say, cotton or orange juice (both of which had their own chapter).
The only reason that the book got any stars at all is because it was well-written and the little information that was there is accurate. If you know ANYTHING about trading commodities, you will find nothing new here. If you do not, there are better introductions out there.
