4 out of 5 stars a great resource.......1999-07-30

i read the previous edition (1997) to the jobbank guide to computer and high-tech companies, and i must say that it was well-written. i'd recommend it for anyone looking to get an overview of who's who in an exploding industry. i'd also recommend a look at the VaultReports Guide to the High-Tech Industry, which was extremely insightful and a bit more of a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Reading once isn't enough................2005-11-12

Must be read at least twice, for the effects of this book to take effect, maybe even thrice.

Outstanding way for one learn to get the upper hand, not only in investing, but in other areas of life as well. I've stopped panicking my way into foolish trades; let the other guys make the mistakes from now on.

Worth the $$$$$ I paid for it; $5.00, used, at Strand Books in Greenwich Village; Ha! However, the chart on page #2 alone is worth TEN TIMES the cover price! Compare your trading & emotions, & see if you don't recognize yourself at least five steps anong the way. For page #2 alone, I'd say BUY the book at ANY price.......

I also subscribed to Dines' Newletter, after seeing him at the NY Gold show; How about them broads?

I just recently purchased Dines' new book, "Secrets of High States" for $100.00. Big mistake! It's basically a coffee table book, with page after page of photographs, taken by Dines himself; nice, but that's not what I spent 100 beans for. He has about eighty different pictures of animals, nature, and about twenty different broads, and only ONE is naked, can you believe it? In between, are pearls of wisdom which remind me of the advice you get in fortune cookies. Ouch!

On the other hand, if you DO want a coffee table book, and if you do appreciate photography, and if you do want snippets of wisdom here and there, and if you are amused by pictures of trees, deserts, water, leaves, etc, and if you have $100.00 you can't seem to otherwise get rid of, then this book's for you; but let's see, one, two, three, four, five, that sure is a lot of "ifs", isn't it?

3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2001-09-06

Although this book is full of cool stuff about mass psychology, with lots of examples to prove the points, it got a little dry and repetitive after awhile. Also, the price makes me want to puke. The cartoons added all over the place helped put a bit of life into the reading though.

5 out of 5 stars The Power to Change Your Life.......2000-12-01

This book is not really about investing. Although it's teachings about human herd mentally can help you in the stock market this book is about much more. It is more a philosphical journey. The chapters on Paradox and Low and High states can allow you to look at the own occurances in your life to see why you maybe or may not be struggling.

In addition, the Dines Girls are total babes.

1 out of 5 stars How investors can MAKE MONEY using...MASS PSYCHOLOGY.......2000-05-04

I found Mr. Dines book to be big on price and small on continuity and meaning. The text moves in and out of ideas so quickly that it is difficult to decipher any point to his many colorful stories. His personal philosophies don't really teach you much in the end. I would not recommend the book to anyone hoping to learn more about investing.

1 out of 5 stars Opaque and Turgid; Self Congratulatory w/out Saying anything.......1998-12-17

Mr. Dines, while probably an excellent investor, uses his pulpit to extoll political views, and trumpet the wisdom of his investment suggestions from 35 years ago, some of which have yet to be realized. The gap between Theoria and Praxis in this book is yawning, and Mr. Dines does not seem to get the rubber to hit the pavement. If you are looking for an abstruse discussion of the subject of mass psychology in markets, this is a great book, and very unique. If you are looking for a way of trying to understand how markets react, and individuals respond to markets and their money, and MAKE MONEY FROM THIS, read another book. I am still unclear as to how Mr. Dines employs his strategies on a practical level, and what his notions of risk/reward are, etc.

4 out of 5 stars The Deeper Question.......2005-11-15

I studied this book in law school. I think the central question of this book is a little deeper than the way the previous reviewer phrased it. The book explores the conflict that occurs when a judge perceives that the law applying to a case before him is not a just one and will result in injustice if applied in the current case. Does the judge simply apply the law, or find some way around it to allow for a just result? This is an interesting question today, given the debate between "strict construction" of the Constitution and Holmes' popular notion that the Constitution is a "living document" whose interpretation must evolve with the times. The chief example used in this book is the infamous Dred Scott decision, in which a slave who had lived for many years on free soil, sued for his freedom, but was turned down by the Supreme Court on Constitutional grounds -- although presumably the judges knew that this was not a just result.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite book.......2000-07-12

Justice Accused addresses why antebellum judges who opposed slavery nonetheless felt powerless to do any thing but enforce it.

      Book Description

The Human Right to Water traces the issue of the right to water through a number of international legal instruments, particularly General Comment No. 15 which recognizes such a right. It analyzes the international legal regime for human rights, and argues that the nexus between development, water and human rights is well established therein. Although the central theme of the Study is General Comment No. 15 issued by the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in 2002 which explicitly recognizes a human right to water, the Study argues that the Comment supports the idea that there is an incipient right to water emerging in international law today. This right is buttressed by a large number of soft law instruments, emerging customary international law, as well as an increasing number of domestic law instruments.

The authors are recognized experts in their fields. Salman M. A. Salman is Lead Counsel in the Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development and International Law Group (ESSD and International Law) of the World Bank Legal Vice Presidency. He is the Bank's focal person on water law, and has published extensively in this field. Siobhan McInerney-Lankford is counselor to ESSD and International Law Group. She specializes in human rights law, and has written widely in this area.

John Ladd has made extensive revisions to his original translation of this work, which now comprises the first part of Kant's Metaphysics of Morals in its entirety. In addition to numerous emendations occasioned by the publication in 1986 of a critical edition of the German text, this new edition reinstates those passages abridged in the previous edition: Kant's discussion of contracts, marriage and the family. In a supplementary Introduction written for this edition, Ladd comments on issues raised by the new material, such as the relevance of Kant's conception of marriage to his view of the status of women. An updated bibliography, glossary, and index are also provided.

              Book Description

As the longest-serving Justice in the history of the U.S. Supreme Court, William O. Douglas was known for writing a host of dissenting opinions. He was also a prolific writer off the bench, a man whose work was as much concerned with nature as with law. This collection brings together writings that represent the wide range of Douglan's interests. It includes selections from his autobiographical and political books, and opinions from landmark cases--all reflecting not only his love of justice but also his roots in the Northwest and his lifelong commitment to the environment. These writings demonstrate that Douglas never shied from controvery--whether over interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment or the choice between flies and bait for trout fishing--and offer abundant inspiration for both environmentalists and all who yearn for a more just society. Whether extolling the joys of the wild or defending the rights of citizens, Douglas shows in this work that he truly was Nature's Justice--and one of a kind.

5 out of 5 stars Champion of liberty and the environment .......2006-08-05

Few national leaders have shaped present-day America more positively than Justice William O. Douglas. The force of Douglas's ideas has had a profound influence on our world--from the individual liberties that we enjoy to his attitudes about protecting the natural world from human encroachment. At the core of it all is Douglas's idea of the human person. The advantages Americans enjoy over citizens of other nations, particularly totalitarian regimes " . . . are not in material things such as technology and standards of living. They relate to matters of the mind and the spirit . . . Man's moral and spiritual appetite, as well as his political ideals, demanded that he have freedom. Liberty was to be the way of life--inalienable and safe from the intrusions of government."

James O'Fallon's edited selections provide us with an excellent overview of Douglas's vast experience and the life that underlay his philosophy--from his boyhood days growing up in near poverty in the Yakima foothills, through his great Supreme Court decisions (establishing the right of privacy) and dissents. Here we also get a feel of the great men Douglas knew: Brandeis, President Franklin Roosevelt (with whom he played poker and drank martinis regularly), Hugo Black and many others.

In the tradition of John Muir and Aldo Leopold, Douglas is one of our great nature writers with his descriptions of the experiences and characters of the great wild places of our Pacific Northwest. He has a botanist's feel for the detail of a landscape and paints a vivid picture with all the sights, sounds and smells of the wilderness.

Douglas was the partner of presidents, but he also had a great understanding and sympathy for the poor, for persons such as prostitutes who lived in conditions where criminal conduct was prevalent, and hobos with whom he rode in boxcars in his early days. These are outstanding recollections and ideas--Douglas is one of the greatest thinkers of the last Century.

                Book Description

In the United States, few issues are more socially divisive than the location of hazardous waste facilities and other environmentally harmful enterprises. Do the negative impacts of such polluters fall disproportionately on African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Asian Americans? Environmental Injustices, Political Struggles discusses how political, economic, social, and cultural factors contribute to local government officials’ consistent location of hazardous and toxic waste facilities in low-income neighborhoods and how, as a result, low-income groups suffer disproportionately from the regressive impacts of environmental policy.
David E. Camacho’s collection of essays examines the value-laden choices behind the public policy that determines placement of commercial environmental hazards, points to the underrepresentation of people of color in the policymaking process, and discusses the lack of public advocates representing low-income neighborhoods and communities. This book combines empirical evidence and case studies—from the failure to provide basic services to the “colonias” in El Paso County, Texas, to the race for water in Nevada—and covers in great detail the environmental dangers posed to minority communities, including the largely unexamined communities of Native Americans. The contributors call for cooperation between national environmental interest groups and local grassroots activism, more effective incentives and disincentives for polluters, and the adoption by policymakers of an alternative, rather than privileged, perspective that is more sensitive to the causes and consequences of environmental inequities.
Environmental Injustices, Political Struggles is a unique collection for those interested in the environment, public policy, and civil rights as well as for students and scholars of political science, race and ethnicity, and urban and regional planning.

                  Book Description

Low-income communities frequently suffer from a lack of access to, or lack of control over, the natural resources that surround them. In many cases, their local environment has been degraded by years of resource extraction and pollution by distant corporations or government agencies. In such settings, initiatives that build natural assets in the hands of the poor can play an important role in poverty-fighting efforts.

Natural Assets explores a range of strategies for expanding the quantity and enhancing the quality of natural assets in the hands of low-income individuals and communities. The book:

Drawing on evidence from across the United States, the authors demonstrate that safeguarding the environment and improving the well-being of the poor can be mutually reinforcing goals.
