5 out of 5 stars Much Better Than The 9th Edition.......2003-02-07

I have been a fan of Lawrence J. Gitman's writing style for years. His approach to finance is simple to understand & this is very beneficial for both students & teachers. The 10th Edition of "Principles of Managerial Finance" (Hardcover) has the following improvements:

            a. Calculation of "n" in the chapter of "Time Value of Money"
            b. Adding the "Free Cash Flow Valuation Model" in the chapter of "Stock Valuation"
            c. Adding "Strategic Net Present Value (NPV)" in the chapter of "Risk & Refinements in Capital Budgeting"
            d. Having two (2) "Time Value of Money Tables":
d.1. more detailed tables (in terms of more "i"; note: "i" was formerly "k" in the 9th Edition) located at the back of the book
d.2. tables, printed on thick paper, located at the front of the book that is perforated (can be pulled out)
            e. Up to date real world examples
            f. Better presentation of the topics, notably the topics on Bond & Stock Valuation
            g. The Hardcover Edition includes an Excel-based student software on the book's Companion Web Site valid for six (6) months upon activation.

The book comes with a CD-ROM. The exercises have topics listed before them. This is beneficial both for students & teachers (students can EASILY practice what they've learned while teachers can give assignments by simply browsing the topics).

This is an outstanding basic finance book & I haven't found another one that's better. However, outstanding as this book is, there is still room for improvement. My suggestions are:

            a. Explain "deferred annuities" (both for ordinary annuity & annuity due)
            b. Present the computation of "i" & "n" using algebra (in addition to using the methods presented in the book)
            c. Include the process of interpolation in the book proper
            d. Fully discuss the "Average Rate of Return"(ARR), "Discounted Payback Period" (DPP), & "Modified Internal Rate of Return" (MIRR) in the chapter of "Capital Budgeting Techniques"
            e. Better explain the "Earnings Before Interest & Taxes (EBIT)-Earnings Per Share (EPS) Approach" in the chapter of "Capital Stucture"
            f. Correct the error (I believe this to be an editing error) on the formula for standard deviation (Equation 5.3a, page 222, footnote section)
            g. Include a "Challenging Exercises Section" for every chapter where the problems are more complex & the topics are NOT stated before them
            h. Increase the six (6) month student subscription to the book's Companion Web Site to one (1) year.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn basic finance. This book is well worth buying & KEEPING.

4 out of 5 stars Great Finance Book But Could Still Be Improved.......2001-01-07

This book, "Principles of Managerial Finance" (9th Edition), is an excellent finance book. It explains financial concepts in an easy-to-understand manner. Gitman gives you a step-by-step guide to understanding finance. Gone are the days when one dreads reading a finance book because of complexity. You'll actually look forward to reading this book. However, there are some items that need to be added/fully explained in the book itself (like how to interpolate, finding the number of periods in the time value of money, calculating free cash flows in valuation, etc.) & there are things that need to be clarified in the cost of capital & capital budgeting techniques sections. Nevertheless, it is still a great book well worth buying.

            3 out of 5 stars College Text.......2000-06-30

Having struggled through many finance courses this text truely brought the area of finance into a much clearer perspective for me. It provides a lot of general knowledge about the field and as a stand alone text is very useful. However, the assignments that accompanied the text definitley lacked substance and did not prove to be worthwhile.

The Demo Docs System of instruction replicates the classroom experience by providing more “I get it” moments outside of class. We’ve talked to tons of POA instructors and our editors have even taken the accounting course (numerous times!) to figure out the following issue in this course that is consistent: Students understand (or “get it”) right after you do a problem in class, but as soon as they leave class, with each passing hour, their ability to do the problems again and complete their homework diminishes to the point of them either having to come to office hours to get help, or they just quit and get behind in the course. On top of this, you can end up getting behind in the course as well, in order to keep everyone on track. The Demo Docs system helps to recreate the “I get it” moments outside of class-- keeping both you and the students on track.

I feel the authors have covered the topic well. As a read, I thought the text was written as good as an accounting can be.

The problem I shared with my classmates is that there was difficulty completing the exercises at the ends of the chapters. We feel maybe two reasons for this: first, the problems often could not be solved without looking forward to the chapters not yet covered; and second, specific details needed to solve problems were either not there or organized in an unfamiliar way. This required asking many questions with the instructor and classmates to try to complete the exercises.

Overall, though, I suppose this is on par with other texts on the topic. The book we liked the best was "Accounting: what the numbers mean" as it was written & organized very well; and the exercises were very effective.

Compelling curiosities, horrific brutality, and cases of routine corruption are to be found in the history of London's Central Criminal Court--better known as the Old Bailey. Theresa Murphy sets the flaws of the modern British criminal-justice system in the context of Old Bailey history through a fascinating collection of historical anecdotes and outlines of more recent cases. More descriptive than analytical, The Old Bailey attains a grisly, chamber-of-horrors sort of appeal in its coverage of gruesome events. It can also be highly entertaining in its lighter, less macabre passages. Murphy provides sparks of contention as her criticisms of the system's continued flaws occasionally pierce the historical narrative. The courts in which judges are nurtured, she states, are "narrow and hardening"; even now, they are places of "ludicrous ill-fitting wigs" and "archaic language peppered with hypocrisy." She illustrates how today, as in the past, a high degree of power rests in the hands of judges, ensuring that "anomalies in sentencing must be expected and accepted." Posing questions rather than providing answers, this book should appeal not only to those who relish the more unsavory elements of social history, but also to anyone interested in pondering the development and current state of Britain's judicial system. --Karen Tiley, Amazon.co.uk

                  Book Description

This is the history of the Old Bailey, an institution as flawed as all man-made attempts at justice are doomed to be. In the beginning there was barbarity and injustice. The court was thronged with a restless, muttering mob eager for the verdicts of "guilty" so they could enjoy public executions, hurling abuse and missiles at those with the noose around their neck. Today we fool ourselves that we have evolved beyond barbarism, but are made uneasy by the continuing exposure of miscarriages of justice. The Old Bailey has since seen its usual parade of misfits. With a mixture of racist murderers, road-rage killers, and lying and cheating top politicians, it is as difficult as ever to separate the good from the bad, but the ugly are easily recognisable. Ugliness is the theme here as we tour the courts of long ago, meeting the Dracula-garbed court chaplains, drunken, brutal judges, cold-blooded hangmen, through to the new breed of pseudo-respectable criminals of today.

4 out of 5 stars Injustice Marks Development of British Criminal System.......2000-09-09

Injustice has marked the Development of British Criminal System, but reviewers of history need to "get past" the role of capital punishment in contributing to that history.... Generally, as all areas of the law become more refined, improved procedures and simply more advanced ways of administering justice similarly advance. There are only two drawbacks in the book; the first is an initial pounding criticism of capital punishment, a biasing filter through which each part of the book is unfortunately set into conformance. The second is a desire, at least on my part, for a complete set of footnotes and case cites. Far from a grisly or chamber-of-horrors treatment, and once the death penalty bias is filtered out, I have found the book to be an insightful look at the development of the British criminal justice system from beginnings which included graft, corruption, and an expectedly depraved jail system. The book illustrates the early benchmarks from which the British criminal justice system has progressed on its way toward greater due process, increased fairness and more humane imprisonment. Some unusual injustices and odd circumstances illustrate examples of how unusual exceptions can easily arise even from a system on its way to improvement, but especially where it began from a starting point of imperfection. Of particular interest was a chapter on the effect on the criminal justice system during World War II. I highly recommend the book for medium to light reading material. curt@patentlawyer.com

With animals, the jackal is prepotent over the dog, as is stated by Flourens, who made many crosses between these animals; and this was likewise the case with a hybrid which I once saw between a jackal and a terrier. I cannot doubt, from the observations of Colin and others, that the ass is prepotent over the horse; the prepotency in this instance running more strongly through the male than through the female ass.

                        Book Description

The evolution of plants under domestication is unique in the general fields of plant evolution for many reasons: because it is a comparatively recent event, because the original plant material, i.e. the wild progenitors of many important crop plants still grow in their natural habitats and because man has played a major role in this process.
This important book covers the major aspects of this fascinating subject. Contents include coverage of the origin of agriculture, increasing and decreasing diversity and speciation under domestication, and the evolution of weeds and important selected crops. The final chapter of the book is devoted to sources of genetic diversity for future crop plant evolution and looks at how vitally important wild genetic resources can be effectively collected and preserved.
Plant Evolution under Domestication is an extremely valuable reference source for upper level students and professionals in the areas of plant sciences and agriculture, plant breeding, crop evolution, ethnobotany and related subjects. It should be on the shelves of all those researching and working in this area and in all libraries of plant science and agriculture departments and institutes throughout the world.

1885. Part One of Two. Darwin, the British naturalist who became famous for his theories of evolution and natural selection, writes in the introduction: The object of this work is not to describe all the many races of animals which have been domesticated by man, and of the plants which have been cultivated by him; even if I possessed the requisite knowledge, so gigantic an undertaking would be here superfluous. It is my intention to give under the head of each species only such facts as I have been able to collect or observe, showing the amount and nature of the changes which animals and plants have undergone whilst under man's dominion, or which bear on the general principles of variation. Contents: Domestic Dogs and Cats; Horses and Asses; Pigs-Cattle-Sheep-Goats; Domestic Rabbits; Domestic Pigeons; Fowls; Duck-Goose-Peacock-Turkey-Guinea Fowl-Canary Bird-Goldfish-Hive Bees-Silk Moths; Cultivated Plants: Cereal and Culinary Plants; Fruits-Ornamental Trees-Flowers; On Bud Variation and On Certain Anomalous Modes of Reproduction and Variation; and Inheritance. The publication of "On the Origin of Species" in 1859 ignited a public storm. Having offered offered his book as a contribution to science, Darwin discovered to his dismay that it was received as an affront by many scientists & as a sacrilege by the clergy. To answer the criticism of his theory, Darwin published 2 vol. in 1868 to demonstrate that evolution was obvious to any observer of nature. Darwin assembled a mass of proof -- & a hypothesis about species reversion. Here, in Vol. 2, Darwin turns to a richly detailed discussion of the roles of inheritance & crossing in the development of species. This fascinating, invaluable, & courageous undertaking eventually formed the foundation of our current understanding of evolution.
