Book Description
A new Cold War has developed between competing blocs of countries over the role of financial markets versus the state in the provision of pensions and the financing of the economy generally. An Anglo-American bloc, which has spread into South America, Australia, Canada and Japan, favors private pension investment on stock markets. Proponents of this approach argue that it will be much more efficient and provide capital for corporate growth. A European bloc, not including the UK, favors state provision and a much smaller role for unstable stock markets in the provision of pensions. This model is under threat from the World Bank, financial markets, and many senior academics in the US and Britain. Richard Minns, in a timely and articulate intervention, demonstrates that many of the arguments used in support of the Anglo-American approach are based not on an improvement in pensions and economic growth, but rather on promotion of stock markets themselves, a decidedly different matter.

Book Description
The rise of the information economy is dramatically transforming work and employment conditions around the globe. Who does the work, how it is done, and the results it produces for individuals and their families, for organizations and for society, is undergoing fundamental change. This book contributes to our understanding of the transformation of work in the information economy, through a detailed examination of labor markets in Silicon Valley. It provides an original and insightful analysis of flexible labor including growing volatility in work demands and increasingly tenuous employment relations. In shaping this context of rapid change, it examines the increasingly important role of labor market intermediaries. These new labor dynamics, shaped by flexibility and intermediation, create difficult and contradictory conditions for workers. Some workers clearly thrive in this vibrant context, but many face high levels of insecurity amidst growing inequality.
Customer Reviews:
Clears away the hype on the new economy.......2002-10-03
This book provides the clearest analysis of work in the new economy of anything I've read, using Silicon Valley as the prototypical region of the future of work. It cuts through all the hype, and analyzes both the region's dynamism, but also the reasons behind the volatility, insecurity, and rise in contract/temporary employment. It provides innovative and useful suggestions for ways of increasing security for workers in the region's labor market, while maintaining the region's dynamism. Should be read by every elected official and policy maker in the country, and anyone else concerned about the changing nature of work in the new economy.

Book Description
One of the central challenges in the international community today is how to make globalization work for the benefit of all. This volume examines Denmark-one of the few countries to successfully integrate the global economy on the basis of balanced social and economic policies.
Sustaining competitiveness at a global level while maintaining high standards of labour and social protection is often a challenge, but this study reveals how Denmark has pioneered mechanisms to achieve this crucial balance and promote decent work for all. In fact, this volume shows how such standards are not only a consequence of economic growth, but also an essential basis for growth and competitiveness. It demonstrates how the integration of social and economic policies and the role of social dialogue are instrumental in this regard. Likewise, other dynamic Danish policies are highlighted, such as systems of vocational education and training, active labour market policy, combination of labour market flexibility and income security, social protection and welfare reform and other programs for reconciling work and family life.
With a view to drawing useful lessons, this book presents Denmark's policies as an excellent starting point for other countries looking to create greater economic strength and social cohesion in this ear of globalization.
Book Description
More than 40,000 children die daily in the developing world from avoidable sickness and disease. Tens of millions of children labor in factories, mines, mills and sweatshops, or scavenge for a living on city streets and dumps. In the so-called developed world, children's lives are similarly blighted by drugs, alcohol, sexual abuse and violence. Children of the rich are unhealthily obsessed with consumerist desires while children of the poor suffer from lack of opportunity. The global market is responsible for both of these ills.
In "Children of Other Worlds" Jeremy Seabrook examines the international exploitation of children and exposes the hypocrisy, piety and moral blindness that have informed so much of the debate in the West on the rights of the child. Seabrook insists that the whole question of protecting children's rights, North and South, must take into consideration the structural abuses of humanity that are inherent in globalization. He addresses the key question of whether the West can turn its 'benevolent' attention to the evils of child labor in the rest of the world without first understanding that gross forms of poverty anywhere are part of the same global problem.
Customer Reviews:
Cure the Source.......2004-07-17
This ethnography served to not only shed light on the horror that is child labor, but it also served as a reality check. Child labor is terrible but the alternatives are worse. The revelation afforded by this ethnography is that laws against child labor do not solve the problem. Children will only find a new way to secure money. The new alternatives are worse and include begging, stealing, and/or prostitution. In fact, child labor is often their only way of survival.
thoughtful and disturbing.......2004-05-08
this book is thoughtful and disturbing; it has research that may seem dry at times, but when you consider the human cost behind the numbers, it is horrifying. the author opens discussions about child labor and abuse within the context of social mores that are fascinating; then leaves the reader to decide for herself. well worth the read although i found myself unable even more convinced that child labor is a crime against humanity that must be stopped.

Customer Reviews:
A true gem.......2006-09-05
A simple and straight to the point book. My husband and I read this book and practised every step outlined in it and went from roughly -$3400 to $20000 in the bank in 6 months NO LIE. If you are not lazy and practice what is written in this book you will truely be with No More Debt. I love Pastor Dollar's teaching because he does it with clarity only laziness can keep you in debt after reading this book.
This book works!.......2006-05-28
I did pay all my debt and now I'm debt free. Thanks to Creflo Dollar and this book. You will have to put principles to work. Not just read the book. Do what he says to you and you will be amazed with results.
BIG Inspiration .......2005-12-16
Dr. Creflo Dollar has been a true inpiration in my life since i was 17 years old, anything i review from him will recieve 5 stars, he really inspires me to do better in life, and the battle between good and evil in my life, the word is what keeps me going another day, if i didnt have the word that Dr. Dollar preached to me the first time i heard him i probably would be in jail, or dead.
Supernatural Debt cancellation.......2003-10-30
This will help us attain a supernatural debt cancellation
Take Your Time.......2003-10-09
This book is awesome and amazing. I read this book twice. The first time I cheated myself and I read the book like a novel. You can read a novel quick (2 or 3 days), but you shouldn't read teaching books that fast. When I read it the second time, I took my time, highlighted, underlined, took notes, and most importantly I put the principles into action. When I did it this way, I received so much revelation that I didn't receive the first time.
There are only two systems that exist in this life. God's system and the devil's system. There are no in-betweens. Of course, we know that the world's system is under the devil's system. You can handle your finances according to God's system or the world's system. 'No More Debt' is a prosperity course (simplicity level) on how to get out of debt God's way. Don't just read this book quickly just to say that you read it. Take your time with it and apply it to your life. As a result of reading this book, I've seen a change in my finances and am on my way to debt-free living.
Book Description
Incisive commentary on recent Supreme Court decisions from America's foremost constitutional scholars
For nearly all his tenure as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, William Rehnquist has enjoyed the support of a slim but usually solid majority of his fellow justices. With it he has been able to effect a dramatic shift to the right in many vital areas of constitutional law. Displaying a judicial activism not seen since the 1930s, Rehnquist and his allies, in a series of 5-4 decisions, have undermined civil rights and weakened the federal government's ability to respond to pressing social needs.
As the Rehnquist court concludes its fifteenth term, the well-known constitutional authority Herman Schwartz has assembled seventeen distinguished legal scholars to evaluate its record on the many controversial issues that have come before it. Among them are Stephen Bright on capital punishment, Charles Ogletree on criminal procedure, Norman Redlich on religion, Allan Morrison and David Vladeck on regulation, and John Mackenzie on Bush v. Gore. The book concludes with an overall reflection on Rehnquist's legacy by Tom Wicker.
Customer Reviews:
Analysis of a Conservative court.......2005-03-11
`The Rehnquist Court' is a compilation of articles by different writers critical of Supreme Court decisions made during the last couple of decades. One of the main issues is concerned with the rollback of civil rights gains made in the 1960's. These include prisoner and defendant rights, affirmative action and access for the handicapped. The writers are quick to point out that the Rehnquist years are anything but a complete liberal disaster. In many cases the Supreme Court has upheld freedom of speech as well as generally maintaining the separation of church and state. Make no mistake, many civil rights have been maintained despite the objections of the Conservative trifecta of Justices Scalia, Thomas and Chief Justice Rehnquist.
Taken together the articles paint a particular ideological trend. The Rehnquist court tends to favor states rights over federal rights except in the case of business where the federal government suddenly gets the last say. In one case a state law restricted tobacco companies from putting up billboards in sight of school buildings. The Rehnquist court abandoned federalism and declared the law illegal because it went above and beyond federal restrictions. The Rehnquist court has also been pro-business in making it more difficult for individuals to sue companies particularly in the case of environmental damage. There seems to have been an ideological influence on the Rehnquist court from the Chicago School of economics which teaches undying faith in the market and its ability to self regulate. The Rehnquist court has shown an indifference towards anti-trust laws and a sometimes counterintuitive and bewildering approach towards insider trading. The effect has been a considerable consolidation of wealth in a small minority within the last several decades.
In the case of states rights superceding federal authority the writers astutely point out that in many cases this renders the Bill of Rights useless or as Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez might say "quaint". When tobacco companies are restricted from posting billboards targeting children the Rehnquist court is ready to sweep in with federal authority but when clear and undeniable bias is shown in the execution of blacks the Supreme Court defers to the wisdom of the states. The general trend of reducing individual rights has had the effect of dramatically increasing the percentage of incarcerated Americans in the last two decades as well as increasing prison sentences. Incarceration has become the number one tool of social control and prisons have continued to focus on punishment over rehabilitation. On the Executive end Attorney General John Ashcroft sought to have all prosecuting attorneys seek the maximum sentence in all cases which would end plea bargaining.
It looks as if the Rehnquist years are just about officially over which leaves "The Rehnquist Court" essentially a historical compilation of specific rulings however the writers make it clear that the legacy is far from over. There have been a tremendous amount of 5-4 decisions and if the court saw a couple of more uber-Conservatives like Scalia or Thomas things could change dramatically.
